Chocolate chip cookies: What's your favorite part of the drafting process?

Getting to the scenes that inspired the work to begin with!

I might have started "eating dessert first" and writing those scenes to start...gotta strike while the iron is hot, after all! It's also fun to see how they come together as I weave the connective tissue in, and how much they change or don't depending on the new context of the wider story around them.

Holy shit that post where you mentioned the Avalon book series!!! I read those books growing up!! I ADORED them!! I think I still have them actually. I have the second editions – I didn’t even know they weren’t the original editions till now. I can’t imagine them without the pretty covers and illustrations tbh. The art is part of why I loved the series so much! And I’d never thought about it as a Western magical girl series but you’re kinda right! That’s such a cool way of looking at it. Anyways, thanks for the blast from the past :3

Ace, I'm happy to hear from you, and I'm ecstatic to hear you also have and love the Avalon books!

The genealogy of the series has always struck me as sort of epic because of the way it was born from Jewel Riders (and indirectly, Pern, which I also love)! There are several aspects of Jewel Riders that made it into Avalon, but Avalon also really became its own thing and it's genuinely fantastic. Also surprisingly dark at times and very well-written.

The reason I know the newer editions aren't the OG is because I originally read this bind-up of the first three books at some point in early high school?

All the original first editions sport these kind of photoshopped semi-realistic images of the three same models, with varying degrees of Lisa Frank color vibrancy as their covers. Some are slightly better than others. This is one of the less better ones imo.

I found the later editions I think in my last year of high school. Those had the more anime magical girl-esque covers, with the included illustrations and the compendium entries of the magical animals. I also realized very quickly that some of the slang and language was updated to be more modern (the notable one that always sticks out in my mind was when Ozy goes crowd surfing, the OG editions have him saying a quick "WOOHOO!" whereas the newer editions have him yelling a drawn-out "W00t!" and that change always makes me laugh) but more importantly, the older editions use a lot of harmful and tone-deaf references and terms for Adrian that the newer ones removed. I believe there was also a change or two added to some of Kara's insults that she slings around in the first several books, so she could still be clearly interpreted as a jerk early on without seeming like an irredeemable little snobby bigot, but I may need someone else with copies of the older editions to fact-check me on that one.

But yeah I also MUCH prefer the newer editions, for the art, the illustrations and all the extras put into them! Even if I'm not the target demographic anymore, those books have a very special place in my heart, and they do really have excellent nostalgia value!

I saw your note on my MOA post, and I Just want to say that one (1) gen of inc*st does not a creepy child make, like 1 gen isn't going to do much.

And as a Mordred fan, (as, by the header of your blog you obviously also are), I do not enjoy the idea of Mordred being a child-by-rape.(The Lady of The Lake arranges this!) (in Avalon!)

Because that's all MOA is rape-apologia, incest-apologia and pedophilia-apologia.

If you could discuss some of the scenes that grossed you out, I would like that.

I'm posting general thoughts here and personal thoughts as Mordred below the cut!

I think MOA is one of those books that are literally impossible to seperate from the author. When I was originally reading the book series (back when I had no idea WHO the author was or any of her actions) I thought that it was just another case of someone making historical fiction unnecessarily dark and heavy and gross just for the shock value.

In my opinion, you can make an Arthuriana retelling as dark as you want, but I find the idea of both making it so gross yet forgiving of it is deeply disgusting. Even within the first few chapters, where Igraine is meeting Uther and having their whole conflict/romantic plot it's gross!! and extremely telling of the author's actions!!

It feels like the author is using The Lady of the Lake as a way to justify her actions- like all of the things she did was "destined" to occur or some weird shit

I hate how she wrote the series primarily to defend her own horrid actions and them marketed it as some sort of feminist retelling when it literally does the exact opposite. You can (and probably should!) write a retelling that has dark themes, I find Uther and Igraine's marriage in Le Morte extremely compelling and I think Lancelot being a victim of rape at the hands of Elaine (and by extension the grail-church) can lead to extremely thoughtful and compelling conversations. But you cannot just write a story that forgives and even encourages incest and pedophilia, call it a "feminist" retelling, and then call it a day

ITS SO GROSS AND BAD

i have gotten very accustomed to reading retellings because it interests me to see different perspectives of events and then compare them with my own memories, but i literally couldnt bring myself to finish the series.

i think the incest plot between morgaine and arthur is unnecessary in like every possible way. every single relationship with an age gap is weird and unnecessary. for being a "feminist" retelling that is SUPPOSED to give women a voice, it completely robs them of all of their agency. it feels insulting to give guinevere her welsh name but then making her so deeply christian. there was no reason to make lancelet morgaine's cousin and then make him a major love interest for her

i also just personally hate the way i was written in it, it feels lazy and it isnt compelling

i hate the way arthur was written, its incredibly lazy and robs him of everything cool about him. he ISNT supposed to be this perfect guy, hes a good person and an ok leader who makes bad decisions. hes a person and i feel like MOA doesnt give him that. his biggest flaw is being caring and in love with gwenhwyfer which is stupid!!

There is something about that dialogue that always struck me as true, as something that touches our very essence. Not passing judgment too hastly, but also that our life is full of opportunities and each day we are confronted with the question what to do with this day. Nothing is lost. It just hasn't happened yet. We can choose whether we want to succeed or fail, whether we want to be good or bad.

Naruto confronts Zabuza about Haku (Naruto)

That moment never fails to make me tear up. Until that moment I didn't even consider Zabuza to be capable of having emotions but Naruto tore his armor away and revealed the deep connection he shared with Haku. I felt sad watching them die and yet it taught me and Naruto a lot about the shinobi lifestyle.

The truth about Itachi is revealed (Naruto)

Yeah, that one was a shock. I always wanted to believe that there was more to Itachi's story other than that he killed his whole clan because he "wanted to test his strength". Especially because he always tried to avoid a fight with Konoha shinobis and definitely didn't seem keen on killing them. But that Itachi sacrificed everything except Sasuke for the village -- that was a punch.

Luffy fights Arlong for Nami (One Piece)

Everything came together in that moment. I knew from the moment Nami couldn't let Zoro drown that something was up and when Arlong showed her that he will never ever let her or her village go, her desperation and fragility accumulated into pure epicness: asking Luffy to help her, Luffy trusting her with his hat and the boys just ready to beat the shit out of Arlong and his crew.

Theoden's speech at the Pelennor Fields (Return of the King)

Goosebumps. Every single time. The words. The music. Everything that leads up to it was pure desperation and then the riders arrive and god damn it. They came. They showed up to fight against the evils of Mordor. I was 13 when I saw this scene for the first time and I wanted to ride with them into battle.

Mufasa's ghost (The Lion King)

Mufasa's death must be something that has been ingrained into every millenials DNA. Just thinking about this scene, the music, Mufasa's desperation to save his son, his face when Scar betrays him, Simba's fear and sadness when he discovers that his father is dead ... it's a tragedy that speaks to one of our deepest fears: the loss of a parent or a loved one. And then ... he comes back to guide Simba, to remind him of his responsibility. It hits home.

Jon Snow's resurrection (Game of Thrones)

Jon was easily one of my favourite characters of the show. When he was killed I didn't want to accept it. It just wasn't possible that this was the end. This was all it amounted to: dead, because he did the right thing. Just like Ned and Robb. So when he was brought back to life I felt alive, too. It gave me hope that after all this something good would come out of it ... but yeah, then season 7 and 8 happened.

Vader saves Luke from the Emperor (The Return of the Jedi)

Another moment that just touched something within me. Luke's love for his father made him turn back to the light side. I've known Star Wars since I can remember but it still makes me cheer. It restores hope.

Morgain brings Arthur to Avalon (The Mists of Avalon)

I always felt that Arthur and Morgain were meant to be, but destiny made them half siblings. And when after all their hardships and years of separation, even after Morgain tried to dethrone Arthur and after he killed Mordred, she still seeked him out, only to find him mortally wounded from the battle -- and Arthur accepted her, was glad to see her one last time and asked her to bring him to Avalon. I felt the tragedy and sadness of their story. I also always felt that Arthur truly loved Morgain but knew that it could never be. So her kidness at the end, promising him, that she wasn't going to leave again, was at least some closure for me.

Harry learns the real truth about Sirius (The Prisoner of Azkaban)

This twist, that Sirius wasn't the one who betrayed Liliy and James, was such a surprise. But what sold the moment for me was the relief Harry felt when after years of abuse and neglect by the Dursleys, he would be able to live with Sirius. I loved that moment. It was so easy to imagine how happy Harry must have felt in that moment.

A/N: Took me long enough to answer this one, lol, according to tumblr you sent it in 2021. But we're here now so here you go! Lol Also, I immediately thought of a lighter piece of this ages ago, but when writing it now a bit more of a somber yet peaceful note took it's place. So it's a bit unorthodox of the usual thought of "encouragement" is.

A/N: I also didn't tag anyone in this because I'm going to tag them when I reblog it from my PR tumblr account.

Avalon reached out and gently stroked her fingers across Billy’s cheek. Tender and affectionate. All the while she studied his relaxed face, relaxed after finally finally falling asleep. The worry had eased from between his eyebrows, the hashness of his jaw had lessened.

He breathed softly as he lay next to her, cheek pressed into the rolled back sleeve of his dress shirt. His tie had been discarded the moment he hit the front door after the service, immediately breaking away from his father’s grief to combat his own.

She’d simply followed Billy to his room, stretching out on the bed next to him, tucking her black dress around her knees. Briefly having the thought that it was strange to see herself and her brightly colored friends in the monochromatic dress code. As if Rita had finally found a way to pull the plug on their happiness and watch it swirl down the drain with glee.

Avalon tucked her body closer to Billy’s, watching as his eyelashes fluttered, eyes twitching beneath the lids. Something about REM sleep, Billy’d rattled off on a tangent about it once before, side-stepping their almost daily bickering of him drinking coffee as a breakfast and her staying up all night.

All at once, his eyes flew open and he sucked in a sharp breath, startling Avalon so badly in the moment that she nearly put her fist through his nose. Surprised to find her hand extended, Billy looked at her, working to take in deep, calming breaths.

Slowly, the blue ranger grasped her hand and pulled it forward, placing it against the fabric of his dress shirt, against his chest where his heart thudded; sprinting as fast as his wolf zord could pound the pavement.

Avalon looked at him expectantly, for once not having a smart thing to say to lighten the mood. Didn’t have a snarky remark that would make him roll his eyes and laugh. It wouldn’t have been the right time for it. Instead, she watched him, watched his dilated pupils shine with the tears that worked its way up as the seconds passed.

He pressed his larger hand over hers, holding it firmly against his chest.

She could feel him shaking.

He was scared, she realized.

The orange ranger moved closer to him, her breath over his face, his over hers. She leaned in. Her lips met his and his world was okay again, she could feel his heartbeat slow as his shoulders relaxed.

She pulled away and looked him in the eye, voice soothing and reassuring as she said, “I’m right here.”

I'M SO SORRY FOR HOW LONG IT TOOK ME TO ANSWER THIS!!

My other zanark HC is that he has OCD, I had this hc since my second watch of chrono stone but it was something that im too afraid to say before like all of my disability hcs. For everyone with OCD, you are highly encouraged to kick me in the jaw (criticize me) if you find my words offending or ignorant (please point it out if im being insensitive).

i initially based this strictly on the way he talks and his catchphrase that he say a lot. it felt like it's something that he needed to do. something that he cant stop doing even if he wants to. but he does really want say it most of the time.

i hope this does not sound like im romanticizing intrusive thoughts (as someone who have dangerous ones) but i also think that what made him capable of miximaxing with a super typhoon is because he wasn't able to find a coping strategy that was able to help him through this (because he was in a prison). his intrusive thoughts were harder for him to manage... and became what they called his chaos in the series (which also canonically made it difficult for him to use his powers). i hope this was not ableist of me to say (but tell me if it is!!).

another thing, a bit unrelated to the hc i had above... not to bring zanakurou again on another zanark hc; but i genuinely believe that given that zanark had parents to raise him and wasn't given to a shit organization that puts kids in time warping prisons, he would have been just like zanakurou. with the chaos within himself strictly (and painfully/still unhealthily) managed for the honor and pride of his (chosen) family. he just gives me the vibes.

Oh, this is an interesting ask! It honestly, honestly depends on the kind of dead dove content I end up enjoying.

I'm mostly a fluff enjoyer, actually! But when it comes to dead dove they tend to border from mild toxicity to absolute mad fuckery. I'm not exactly comfortable with airing out the kinds of dead dove tropes I enjoy though, and I'm sorry about that ;v; hope you understand! There's a ton of it that I enjoy though, I can tell you that much.

However. The disclaimer in my bio is there for a reason. While it's probably just thrice or four times in a blue moon, I might reblog a bunch of stuff with extremely sensitive content– and end up creating some myself. Diego and Bodhi

Diego tries his hardest to keep Bodhi off of his father's radar ── though it always seems like the patriarch knows what Diego is doing, and who he's doing it with. This means that Diego rarely has Bodhi over at his place ── meeting up (most of the time) at some place his father wouldn't go, or care about.

The first time Diego set his gaze on Bodhi, he was floored. He went to introduce himself, but only succeeded in speaking absolute jibberish. Diego made an embarrassed exit, only to be approached later by Bodhi.

Avalon and Santiago

While they were working on her custom motorcycle, Avalon kept coming up with more things to fix, just so she'd have an excuse to hang out with Santiago. Eventually, she ran out of excuses, and that was when she asked him out on a date.

When Avalon brought Santiago home for their first holiday together, she introduced Santi to her father, who immediately began grilling Santi about mechanics and other topics he thought might stump his daughter's boyfriend. It's safe to say that Santiago passed her father's test, earning his respect in the process.
