THIS
Also if you don't know what you like (and are able to), try a few things before comitting to a degree into it. I chose chemistry because people kept telling me to "work with what you like" and to "go to college". Except nothing I liked was monetizeable in a way that I'd still enjoy it, the closest thing was science, which is more of a passing interest than a passion. Engineering/mechatronics had too much math and I thought it would be hard getting a job in physics, so chemistry it was.
Now that I got my first job as a lab tech at a public school I realize that I don't want to work in this field, because a) i severely overestimated how much people cared about/could afford safety in the lab, which stresses me out, b) working around dangerous, often carcinogenic chemicals means i get stressed about not contaminating my personal stuff (snack breaks become a whole Ordeal(tm)) and c) i want something with more flexible hours where I can eventually increase the value of my work-hour and work less, because I doubt that there's a thing I'll super enjoy doing for 8h a day 5 days a week. Spending 9h at work (8 work+1 lunch) and like 2h20min - 3h on commute total is leaving me with no time to do what I actually like and decompress and it's burning me out
Anyway that was a whole tangent. TL;DR: If nothing calls to you, try things out and see what sticks.
When you're a kid/teenager everyone expects you to base your career around your passions and interests and that works for a lot of people but it's not the full story. I wish they would also teach students to consider the lifestyle that career would require.
Like... if I had to choose a passion and work a career around it, I would probably work at a zoo or aquarium. But those jobs require a lot of schooling with STEM classes (which I hate) and a lot of early mornings (which make me feel ill) and an obligation to work in person with no flexibility to move (which makes me depressed). So even if I'd enjoy caring for animals all day, it's not a good career path for me.
My current job is travel writing, which is not my passion. I like it, but it's not my passion. But I work a flexible schedule, I can live anywhere, I get a travel stipend, and my team is really chill. So it works for me.
Rather than solely focusing on "What topics do you like?" I think we should ask students "Of the careers that suit your preferred lifestyle, which are the most interesting?"
