Life Drawing Workshop 3rd February
For the first half of this session we drew a trio of similar poses on top of each over in different colours, broadly similar (in a pared down fashion) to how an animatic might be drawn for traditional, hand-drawn animation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My drawings are quite rough and sketchy, partly due to the very short space of time we had to draw each one, but I found this to be a useful and stimulating exercise.
Finally, as this is our last Life Drawing session this year, we were given a chance to draw the model in the method of our choosing that has been learned over the course of the year. I chose to do a kind of mix media, mixing charcoal shading on a mid-tone background with subtractive drawing and a clearly sketched outline
Tumblr media
I think it came out reasonably well, although some of the shading could be stronger and looks a little messy
Overall I think I will miss Life Drawing, I do think my drawing has improved over the course of the sessions since September, but mostly I think it was something I learned to relax and enjoy and even look forward to.
To next year!

Life Drawing Workshop 27th January 2020
In this session we worked with Painting for the first time. Will recommended we primarily use three different paints, building off the top of a midtone.
Tumblr media
We were given the entire session to put together our painting. Will recommended we focus on one part of the body rather than the whole. In my case I went for the head (of our male model). This was my painting at the halfway point
Tumblr media
And this was it at the end:
Tumblr media
Will recommended I reshape the top part of the head slightly, which you can see if you compare the two images. I think the end result is OK, but I feel I went with too dark a shade of red/brown which overwhelms the image and makes it a little hard to distinguish

Life Drawing Workshop 20th January
In this session we worked again on Silhouettes, this time using acrylic paints and with a focus on tones. Will advised us to try and use three shades for our paintings; one for the main shape, one for the light areas, and one for the darker shading areas.
The first half of the Workshop we worked on four different poses for 13 minutes at a time
Tumblr media
I found it quite hard to keep the proportions accurate and/or consistent, which I think is particularly evident from the drawing in the upper right hand side. I think this is partly because I am not used to painting from the outside in (as advised). However I think these are all quite striking as images, and I am reasonably happy with how they came out, in particular the bottom left hand image, which Will also noted to me as the strongest of the four.
In the second half we did a longer painting for around 40 minutes, at first painting down a mid-tone to utilise. The mid-tone also has the advantage of allowing the painter, to “paint over” their mistakes.
Tumblr media
I again struggled with proportions, and also perspective on this occasion, and while painting over the head and neck area with mid-tone was helpful in some ways, it also made the overall painting somewhat messy. However, I again quite like it as an image, though I am conscious that it may be very indistinct to anyone looking at it without having the frame of reference of the original pose.

Life Drawing Workshop 13th January
In this session we sketched a range of silhouette poses in ink
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think these came out generally OK, although there are some points where I obviously struggled; the bottom left of both pages in particular by odd coincidence! The proportions of the legs are also not consistent. Still there is a striking quality to some of the shapes.
In the second half we worked on a longer pose, by first using diluted ink, with darked ink for the shadows.
Tumblr media
Again I think this came out OK, although I acknowledge it might be a bit indistinct for those not familiar with the reference, and I still need to work on perspective, as it looks as if the model is leaning forward more than they were.

Life Drawing Workshop 8th January
In this session we drew a sequence of foreshortening poses
Tumblr media
Followed by a longer and larger single foreshortened pose.
Tumblr media
I was fairly happy with how these came out; the poses in the first drawing are very simple but that was what I decided to go for within the time frame. The longer pose I struggled to draw the right arm in a way that clearly conveyed that the model was leaning his elbow on the mat rather than lying his arm down flat, but it does look somewhat better to me now than it did in the session.

Life Drawing Castle Museum Visit 9th December
In this session we visited the animal displays at the Castle Museum to draw inspiration for our creature designs on the Stop Motion Unit I drew a range of sketches based on what I saw, including some attempts to combine characteristics into something (hopefully) unique

I also took some photos for future reference for particular displays that caught my eyes

The Aardvark and seal particularly caught me eye, as I find their rounded shapes quite appealing for character design

Life Drawing Workshop 4th December: Perspectives
Today we had a discussion on a range of perspectives and tried to apply this to a sequence of drawings where the model present posed with a box
Tumblr media
I found this quite difficult and the indistinct and faint pencil lines reflect the degree of hesitancy on my part. In the second half of the session we worked on a panoramic drawing of the Munnings Drawing Studio, which again I found quite difficult
