#BL with supernatural elements (PNR)

Note
Wading back into the BL world after several months away, and I would like to politely request recommendations. I'm looking for completed BL shows that are as good as Bad Buddy, have a D/s element, are supernatural, and/or are about politics like Not Me. Any or all of these combined would be lovely. I prefer Thai, but any country is fine.
You're the best!
Hi sweetie! Welcome back.
Recently completed BL, as good as Bad Buddy (I rated that a 9/10) with D/s elements, supernatural (PNR), and/or politics.
Okay so I sorted the spreadsheet of doom by year (we are in October 2024) and then ranking, and here is what I got:

Century of Love
Thai Gaga
fated mates, PNR, historical element, grumpy/sunshine, D/s hinted at but not fully executed
This is a very pretty drama about a young man who fell in love with a nice girl 100 years ago, and when she died in his arms, he was cursed to live until he could meet her reborn self. Only this time around, she’s reborn into the body of a man. Or is she? I love it when Thailand gets all up in its own historical business and reincarnation and shizz. I like this pair (it’s not DaouOffroad’s fault I didn’t enjoy their first series.) Daou’s wushu is snazzy and we got a unique meet cute. (Erm… Remeet cute? Meet cute 2.0?)
Ultimately, this is I Feel You Linger in the Air + First Love Again, rather than (as one might expect) Until We Meet Again or The Director Who Buys Me Dinner. The leads turned in great performances, although Daou outclassed everybody else on that screen. It’s a good story and a great BL and I can’t find any major faults with it beyond a certain level of camp that is sadly endemic to lakorns. Also I’m going to give it credit as the kind of BL that one could safely recommend to lovers of melodrama and historical romance, without having to qualify it as “good for a BL.”
It was, to put it succinctly, a VERY ENJOYABLE show.

Cherry Magic (Thai remake)
Thai grey
paranormal, office romance, no D/s
A soft charming warm hug of a show about crushes and mind reading and self worth that really worked for me. With no-fuss execution from a consummate team (at GMMTV) and an OG lead pair (proving why they remain eternal and deserve to grow up). Look, here’s the thing,
Cherry Magic is a great Thai BL in its own right - not comparing it to any other iteration. But even when I do compare (and I've seen all the Cherries and read the manga) it stands strong. I, personally, like the Thai BL slightly better than the Japanese live action yaoi, but I think that’s because I just really enjoy Thai BL's style and I LOVE TayNew.
Also all the kissing was both present and better in this version. As it should be from Thailand.

Cosmetic Playlover
Japan Gaga
obsession, office, tsundere/sunshine , claiming, ownership D/s but nothing more than that
I loved this little show. It was a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedly loves his boss. It’s a hyung romance where everybody is extremely earnest and sweet and pretty about everything. Except our seme, who is slightly unhinged and a little obsessed in all the ways one likes best from Japan. Plus the kisses were good! I can’t ask for anything more, utterly charming unexpected gem of a show. What a great time!

Love For Love's Sake
Korea iQIYI
isekai, paranormal, high school setting, very soft, sunshine/tsundere, it's Korean so no D/s (the only one that might satisfy from them recently is bully romance Jazz for Two)
trigger suicide
Isekai-based KBL is about a man who must win a game by convincing a reserved teen outcast to fall in love with him. Of course, that teen represents himself and his own unhappiness. Like many queer narratives, this show is actually about self worth, trust, and found family, and it is VERY on the nose. But I don’t expect subtlety from my BL and I enjoyed it's truly lovely redemption arc and earnest performances.
I personally found the narrative a touch disjointed with overworked filming angles and poorer than average captions, but the consistency of tone, script, and immersion is beyond the norm for BL. You will drown in this show and like it that way. The leads have fantastic chemistry and it's ultimately highly rewatchable and utterly charming, which counts for a lot.

The Sign
Thai YouTube
paranormal, soulmates, sunshine/tsundere, high heat, police procedural, every other trope, there's even some elements of D/s in there because it has...... well, everything in it
This show is literally everything (except straight) all at once. It's BL, queer, band of brothers, romcom, erotica, PNR, fated mates, police procedural, fantasy, mystery, suspense, and slasher. It’s the king of genre mash-up chaos. Sure, it's madness but there is genius in it.
Was it a crazy unhinged mess +1 roll for damage? Yes. Yes it was.
Did it manage to hold all those tangled threads together? No it did not.
Was it also a charming, sexy, engaging, non-stop piece of entertainment? Sure thing.
I think this show is basically my KinnPorsche, and frankly I’ve been chasing that dragon naga since KP aired. Is it perfect? No. But it was balls to the wall FUN. Emphasis on balls.
I rated it a 9/10 in 2024 but doesn't contain any of your other requested criteria
Sugar Dog Life
The Rebound
Unknown
Wandee Goodday
We Are
Sorry the D/s has been very light on the ground this year. I mean there has been some kinky stuff, but nothing even approaching BB in terms of quality. I mean Deep Night was about sex work and had a poly romance but was it...... good? Not really.
I rated it an 8/10 but at least it has kink
My Stand-in
Meet You At the Blossom
Jazz for Two
Deep Night

Hum.
Setting? Food Industry
I think swapping office for university is probably the most versatile. Office can be so many places and things. Plus SUITS.
But I really love anything set in the food service industry (restaurant, bar, cafe, catering, delivery) can you imagine a BL remake of Strongest Delivery Boy? COME ON.
Romance genre? PNR
If you mean which genre do I want BL to incorporate? MORE PARANORMAL or supernatural elements would be great. Even just magical realism like Color Rush or Cherry Magic.

Seed Change
If you mean theme or core concept I want to take tf over?
You could back up a truck to my door and disgorge historical BL, honest uncensored historical settings coming from:
Taiwan (pirates, please)
Thailand (food & class conflict costume dramas)
Korea (just all the rom com period stuff they do so only gay af)
Japan (there are hundreds of yaoi mangas featuring gay ninjas why have none of them been adapted?)
We all know the BL world has a small obsession with university themed BLs. To combat this monopoly on the market, you are asked to pick this year’s new BL “university trope.” I.e If you were allowed to completely over saturated the BL market with one specific trope for one year, what would it be?
For me, it would be the whole crime/mafia trope. Give me more Trapped, MOD, Kimmporsche, etc. Give me the cop and crime boss romance, give me shady underworld criminals in love, give me star crossed mafia boss lovers. Give me a year of crime.
Mine would probably be like... soft boys?
Is that a theme?
No? Okay.
Honestly, as much as I adore mafia and true crime...
I want family BLs.
I want a year of domesticity.
I want adopted kids. I want single dads. I want 'taking care of my younger siblings because my parents are overseas/dead'. I want domestic babies.
I want marriage.
I want making a house a home. I want love that has lasted and will last and the different kinds of problems that come with that a longterm relationship.
Give me domestic babies! PLEASE. An entire year of that would be AMAZING.
@absolutebl I would love to know what you'd pick. Or anyone. Seriously, y'all, feel free to share my amazing anons! These are the coolest questions.

Shadow and Ice (Gods of War #1) by Gena Showalter | Review & Excerpt
I received this book for free from the mentioned source in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book nor the content of my review.
This book may be unsuitable for people under 17 years of age due to its use of sexual content, drug and alcohol use, and/or violence.

Shadow and Ice by Gena Showalter Series: Gods of War #1 Published by: HQN on October 23, 2018 Genres: Adult, 18+, Paranormal Romance, PNR, Romance Pages: 384 Format: eARC Source: Blog Tour, NetGalley View on: Goodreads Grab it: Buy on Amazon Review Score:
About the Book:
Gena Showalter, the New York Times bestselling author who brought you the Lords of the Underworld, introduces a scorching new paranormal romance series… Gods of War.
Knox of Iviland has spent his life competing in the All Wars, where vicious warriors with supernatural powers fight to the death to claim new realms. One winner takes everything—and all losers die. Enslaved as a child for his ability to control shadows, the most ruthless champion in history will stop at nothing to kill his king. But first he must win the battle for Earth. When a fearsome weapon imprisons every combatant in ice, centuries pass without progress…until she walks in.
Vale London craves a fun arctic getaway with her foster sister before settling down to open a bakery. Street-tough but vulnerable, she is unprepared to find ancient gods escaping a frozen cave—merciless beings who target her when she inadvertently enters their war.
Though Vale is now his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can prove victorious, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.
Lights, camera, and tons of satisfying action!
As a long time Gena Showalter fan, I was so delighted when I learned she would be coming out with another adult paranormal romance series. I mean, the Lords of the Underworld, is the series that hooked me on this genre. Showalter is an expert when it comes to writing breathtaking scenes, witty characters, and alpha males who will dominate your thoughts all night long. And Shadow and Ice did not disappoint.
Forced to compete in a competition for realm supremacy, Knox is not just a warrior, he is the warrior. Every time a new realm is discovered, immortal slaves fight to the death in order to claim the realm for their rulers. This is Knox’s fifth All War, and hopefully his final war. To gain his freedom from his slave bands and avenge his daughter’s death, Knox must win this war — at any cost. No friend, no lover, no potential ally, or silly emotion would stand in his way, or so he thought. Unfortunately during the war for Earth, he and his fellow immortal warriors were imprisoned in ice for hundreds of years, unable to break free from its magical hold. But Knox is not the type of man to let a little — or a lot — of anything get in his way. And as he continues to try and break free and win the All War, something unexpected walks right up to his frozen cage.
Vale is human who’s on vacation with her sister, completing an epic bucket list before they start their own business. Abandoned in the frozen Russian wilderness by their tour guide, Vale and her sister Nola have no choice but to venture out into the frozen wonderland in search of civilization. However, when all hope seems lost, the girls stumble upon a cave with life-size statues of people — which couldn’t possibly be real right? Things quickly escalate for the duo when the ice starts to break and the immortal All Warriors emerge blades swinging, magical weapons blazing, and with their killer instincts intact.
Even though all hell is breaking loose, Vale and Knox are instantly attracted to each other. A classic sign of a Showalter novel, claim first and ask questions second. Stuck in the middle of the carnage, Vale loses track of her sister. Knox, having his own agenda, takes Vale for information and in turn she makes a deal to get her sister back from another warrior. Which in turn, sets the stage for a whirlwind love/hate relationship between our main characters.
Overall, I enjoyed the classic Showalter humor between the characters and the brutal battles that take place page after page. Even though the pacing was slow in some parts, which happens sometime with the first book in a new series, I found the overall world to be one of intrigue and excitement. There is a laundry list of characters, some last longer than others, and a lot of twists and turns that may not appeal to some readers. But, if you like epic wars, hardcore romance, and laugh out loud banter, Shadow and Ice will not disappoint.
My Rating

As they continued trudging through the snow, she asked, “What are we going to call our donut shop, anyway?”
Nola had suggested The Donut Bar and Drunkin’ Donuts, since their sweet treats paid homage to different alcoholic beverages, but both names had been taken already.
“What about Tricks and Treats? Oh! I’ve got it.” Nola clapped her gloved hands. “Happy Hour Donuts.”
“Cute, but neither one says high end. Or revs my motor. I’m sorry!”
“Well, frick.”
Frick—Carrie’s favorite “curse” word. “We could simplify and go with Lee and London,” Vale said.
“I love it, but no one will know what we’re selling.”
“Maybe not at first, but we can leverage social media to spread the word.”
“True. What about Lady Carrie’s.”
Excitement instantly sparked. “Duuuude. Lady Carrie’s is perfect.”
“Well sprinkle sugar on my butt and call me a gourmet donut. Did we just name our shop?”
Vale was just about to reply—Our timing is impeccable, as always—when she spotted an ice hill up ahead. There was something about it… something odd. But what, exactly? Her eyes and brain said Nothing’s out of place.
Heart and legs picking up speed, she crossed the distance, gasped. A perfect six-foot hole had been cut into the side, leading to a perfect hollowed-out tunnel with a perfect upward tilt. Definitely man-made. What was inside? Or better yet, who was inside?
A whimper of anticipation broke free. If the tunnel led to a cavern—occupied or unoccupied, it didn’t matter—she could get Nola out of the elements sooner rather than later.
“Wait here,” she said when her sister reached the hill. “I’ll check out—”
“Nope, sorry. We go in together.”
“If there’s a wild animal squatting inside, only one of us should be its dinner.” Mmm. Dinner.
“You’re right. The other one will be dessert.”
Stubborn girl. “Fine.” Vale withdrew a long coil of rope from her pack, knotted one end around her sister’s waist and the other around her own. Nola isn’t falling to her death on my watch. Next, she withdrew ice axes. Two for each of them. “We’ll find a cavern, or drop. Whichever comes first.”
After zipping and adjusting her bag, she swung an ax, walked her spiked boots up several jagged steps, then swung the other ax. Rinse, repeat. Again and again. Nola did the same, below and to the right of her.
The higher they climbed, the darker the enclosure became, and the more her muscles protested.
Drip, drip. Drip, drip.
Ironically enough, the steady chorus of water drops tasted like melted vanilla ice cream on a hot summer day. Like hope. Hope gave her strength. Up, up. Higher still.
“I’m not sure… I can go…much farther,” Nola said heaving from exertion.
“You can. You will.” If they stopped now, they’d end up right back where they’d started. When a soft, warm—well, warmer—breeze caressed a patch of exposed skin, she gasped. “There’s something ahead, so move your butt!”
The tunnel curved to the right and—
A small pinprick of light caught her attention. “I see something!” Vale climbed faster, closing in.
The light expanded, the tunnel leveling out, opening into…a cavern! Massive ice pillars propped up a domed ceiling at least eight feet high. There was enough space between each pillar to stretch out and get comfortable.
Trembling with relief, Vale crawled out of the tunnel, dropped her tools and bag, and helped her sister over the ledge.
As Nola sank to the ground, panting, Vale pulled the logs and kindling from her pack, and used a match to start a fire. Instant heat. Oh, such glorious heat. Smoke billowed, curling upward, and she removed her goggles and face mask.
“Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you.” Nola removed each piece of headgear, as well, revealing a face so perfect she looked airbrushed. Dark eyes, a delicate nose, and model-plump lips, all surrounded by flawless brown skin and a fall of straight black hair.
Nola had no idea who her parents were. As an infant, someone left her near a Dumpster, with a note pinned to her shirt. All the note had said? “My name is Magnolia Lee and I need a home.”
Frowning, Nola pointed to one of the walls. “Is that…ice graffiti?”
Vale used the axes and rope to create a hanging line to dry her hat and coat before approaching the wall. Hello. Images had been carved throughout, like ancient hieroglyphs or something, and depicted some kind of battle. Twenty giant men and four women held various types of weapons, and surrounded a taller cloaked figure—the grim reaper, maybe? He clutched a scythe.
In front of the group was a headless body. She shuddered.

Hello there! Hope all is well. So I feel like I’ve run through all the BLs that tickle my fancy, wondering if you have any new suggestions? One of my first BLs was Tharntype which I adore and don’t apologize for. I thought all BLs would be like that, meaning strong chemistry. Boy was I wrong. If the chemistry doesn’t grab me from the start I’m likely to drop. And I don’t just mean physical chemistry, I love a good angsty pining scenario. I just ask for believe ability that the characters are into each other. I’m not at all drawn to bubbly sweet BLs. I’ve watched a few and learned I’d rather not (2gether, light on me, DBK, tonchon, sologui- can’t remember the name, cutie pie, were all DNF). I don’t care for the EarthMix or OffGun pairing. Simply bc they don’t feel believable to me. I know their great friends outside of acting and that’s all I see when their onscreen together, just friends, so I find it difficult to believe in their romance (unpopular opinion I feel that way about MaxTul too. They’re bros and I know it which has kept me from giving MOD a real solid chance. But at this point maybe I should!). I enjoy supernatural/fantasy just not in my BLs. Other BLs I’ve loved: KP, SCOY, my beautiful man, where your eyes linger, tasty Florida, strong berry’s long time no see, strong berry’s first love, love mechanics, we best love, love in the air, OuWen (love is science), bad buddy, Minato coin laundry, just to name a few. I’ve tried some darker stuff to change it up and find something new. Most dark and/or triggering elements don’t bother me as long as I know going into it. I can recognize if something Is too much for me and won’t hate watch. I’ve watched: cornered mouse (liked!), shortest distance trilogy was wild and even though I knew what was coming (bc c’mon the jealous prostitute conveniently wanting to sleep with rival prostitute was a setup for disaster), pornographer, like love (liked!), the Chinese whipping boy master/slave can’t remember the name, innocent, light, addicted… all this to say idk what else I would enjoy that I haven’t already seen. I’ve browsed many of your lists already. I might just be too hard to please and sadly watched all I could watch. Le sigh… on the bright side I am looking forward to between us though! Sorry for the novel!
Okay, lemme tease out your preferences (no shade and no shame allowed here) we like what we like:
Template: Tharntype
Likes: Strong chemistry. Angsty pining. Characters INTO each other.
e.g.: KP, SCOY, My Beautiful Man, Where Your Eyes Linger, Tasty Florida, Long Time No See, First Love, Love Mechanics, WBL, Love in the Air, OuWen, Bad Buddy, Minato Coin Laundry, Cornered Mouse, Pornographer, Like Love, Irresistible Love.
Dislikes: Bubbly sweet BLs, PNR, brotherly pair energy
e.g.: 2gether, Light on Me, DBK, TC, Cutie Pie, EarthMix, OffGun (and likely the rest of the holy trinity), MaxTul
Ooof, a challenge. You might have seen many of these but I am going to throw a few at you that you didn’t name but I think may be in your wheelhouse:
Addicted!!
His the movie
Just Friends?
Your Name Engraved Herein
Red Balloon
Takumi-kun 2 on
Gymnasium Baby AKA Taiikukan Baby
Junjou: Pure Heart
Ai no Kotodama 2: Sekai no Hate Made
Love Next Door 1 & 2
Sweet Student Boy
HIStory 2 both
What the Duck (BL side)
Goodbye Mother
I Told Sunset About You
Why R U? (SKIP the SaifahZon stuff)
Siew Sum Noi (it’s very much a pulp tho)
Made in Rooftop
Kiss X Kiss X Kiss - Perfect Scandal (the two BL episodes)
Blueming
Semantic Error
Ones that don’t have the physical stuff but do have everything else (?) maybe:
Love Sick
His - Koisuru Tsumori Nante Nakatta
The Boy Foretold by the Stars
Given
To My Star
Ocean Likes Me
Old Fashion Cupcake
Some of these are pretty darn obscure let me know if you are struggling to track it down and I can link you my last known source.
And here are two, honestly I just... don’t know but I’d be intersted in your opinion:
Like in the Movies - it’s been too long since i saw it
Seven Days - it’s my personal mantra that every BL fan should at least try it. It is certainly NOT sweet.
Okay, I suppose I should get back to work now.
#obscure BL#unusual BL#forgotten bl#Thai Bl#Japanese Bl#Pinoy bl#Korean bl#Taiwanese BL#only some of these are to my personal taste#but that doesn't mean you won't like 'em

Paranormal BL
In the romance fiction world this would be called, PNR, or paranormal romance and it usually means a contemporary setting but with magical elements or fantastical monsters like vampires, werewolves, ghosts.
Here’s a list of all the one’s I’ve encountered in order of my personal preference.

Color Rush (Korea) 10/10
Korea does PNR really well, it’s just mostly het. Their concepts are always clean, bright, and well written, Color Rush is no exception. I love this BL so much I wrote a whole post about how amazing it is.
Cherry Magic (Japan) 9/10
Definitely one of the best sweetest PNRs to ever happen. The paranormal elements is an audio conceit allowing for voice over, but a good one that doesn't rely on CGI and it’s a great story well acted. Can’t ask for more, really.

He's Coming to Me (Thailand) 9/10
One of GMMTV’s most underrated BLs about a boy who can see ghosts and falls in love with one. They move in together and try to uncover that ghost’s murderer. Good friendship group, great plot, and one of the best coming out sequences in all BL.
Close Friend (Thailand) the KimCop episode 7/10
Kimmon & Copter did a really fun idol meets and falls in love with fan only through the medium of VR. Technically this is sci-fi not PNR but I really enjoyed it and it’s only a short 30 minute episode.

The Guardian (China) 6/10
Guardian is an urban fantasy with a procedural framework. It's completely censored obviously BL to the point where there is even a secondary BL couple. But nice production values and fun supernatural elements. Buffy level CGI.
Great Men Academy (Thailand) 6/10
As body-swaps go this one is actually one I liked. Also I really enjoyed the story, support cast, and filming techniques. Frankly, of all the actors to portray a girl in a man’s body James is one of the best. However, technically this isn’t BL because, ya know, gender.
HIStory: My Hero (Taiwan) 6/10
Body-swap is one of my least favorite paranormal tropes, mostly because the actor has to have a VERY strong sense of physicality to actually take on the mannerisms of someone else. This one isn’t the best. Also not sure if it qualifies as BL, see previous entry.
So Much In Love (Thailand) 5/10
It might not be rated high because it is pretty low level pulp and the subs are terrible, but the paranormal concept is actually quite strong. A boy who can see ghosts encounters one at the swimming pool and they fall in love, although the ghost might not actually be dead,. Has a touch of horror but it all ends happily.
Y-Destiny (Thailand) Ep 7-8: Thurs and Ep 11-12 Sat 5/10
Ep 7-8 Thursday, is a ghost story about a boy who pretends to see the dead to con his friends, then starts actually seeing a spirit and falls in love with him. Ep 11-12 Saturday is a timeslip friends to lovers story a little bit like the movie Big.
PickRome’s Our Skyy episode (Thailand) 5/10
You need to know the OffGun characters from their previous series Puppy Honey to get this episode. It is cute, but do I believe they swapped bodies? Not even a little bit.
PeteKao’s Our Skyy episode (Thailand) 5/10
A sort of serendipity/luck based episode so only sort of qualifies. Will probably only make sense if you already know the TawyNew couple from their previous Kiss series.

The Fairy Fox (China) - 3/10
Kitsune sort or warrior spirit comes to live with ordinary high school boy because he is the reincarnation of a king he once loved. Well cast but very censored and really odd ending.
Youths in the Breeze (China) - 3/10
Three different PNRs one of which features a cat that turns into a human. Korea has done this one het and it didn’t work there either. It’s an odd concept to make romantic. This one ultra censored and there’s two other PNR stories in the series that I can’t remember.
Close Friend (Thailand) the JaFirst episode 3/10
See above, cat boy not really my thing, much as I like cats.
My Dream (Thailand) - 3/10
Some spirits/fae creatures get involved with some ordinary boys, for odd contrived reasons, including one that can be either a man or a woman depending on the bathwater. Very confusing ending.
The Cupid Coach (Thailand) - 3/10
The spirit of cupid comes to life to learn about love, falls in with a boy, disappears. One of the worst of the pulps with terrible pacing, crap production, and mostly piss-poor acting.
Hidden Love (Thailand) - dnf
A group of students trapped together get embroiled in the tragic love story of two ghosts.
Wuxias are not included on this list as they are kinda their own thing not PNR.

I made a My Drama List for this.
