The Shadow Rising, Chapter 54 - Into the Palace
(THIS PROJECT IS SPOILER FREE! No spoilers past the chapter you click on. Curious what I'm doing here? Read this post! For the link index and a primer on The Wheel of Time, read this one! Like what you see? Send me a Ko-Fi.)
(Silhouettes icon) In which no one expects the sucker punch.
PERSPECTIVE: Elayne and company are on their way to the Panarch's Palace on a rickety cart. The three women are posing as refugees from the countryside, in drab brown wool. Egeanin is functioning as bodyguard, having sworn an oath by her hope of a higher name(1) to protect them in the Palace. Even Domon can't argue that she's a good fighter.
Along the way, someone shouts that the Panarch is dead, and El fears a riot might break out around them, but they make it through without incident, and into the palace, holding Domon's gift of ice peppers. In the storeroom they're directed to, they switch outfits to dress like the servants who operate in the Palace.
They split up, Nyn headed for the museum and El and Egeanin for Amathera. A prearranged riot seems to have gone off, since they pass many guards headed out of the Palace, as they'd hoped.
El can feel someone channeling inside Amathera's bedchamber. She hopes that if she channels, everyone else will assume it's the same activity already going on. She tells Egeanin to throw open the doors, and duck down. El takes out Temaile, and Amathera says she can just start talking and her loyal guards will do her bidding, but El hoists her up by her hair with air weaves and says they're going to sneak out so that none of the other Aes Sedai get wind that they've come and rescued Amathera, and that's that.
PERSPECTIVE: Nynaeve gets to the exhibition hall and makes to take the sad bracelets when a serving woman enters. As she gets closer, Nyn recognizes Moggy, and lashes out with a punch of air. Moggy disrupts it somehow, and tries to Compel Nyn, but she does the same disruption, and gets all the angrier.
Nyn realizes she's terrified under her anger, because it's taking everything she has to hold up against Moggy's strength. Moggy makes big threats, about making Nyn a live step to mount her horse, or perhaps giving Nyn to Rahvin, though he has "a pretty little queen to amuse him now",(2) he used to enjoy having three or four to dote on him.
Moggy talks about the sad bracelets, explaining more about their function. It's a form of cuendillar, indestructible even by balefire, and it will control any man who channels, but it won't stop him going mad and there's a backflow, so the man will eventually be able to control the women who wear the bracelets too. Two women can wear the bracelets, but it reduces the effectiveness even as it slows the backflow, and a man is needed to remove the bracelets just as a woman is needed to remove the collar.(3)
Nyn wonders why Moggy is explaining all this, does she think it doesn't matter, does she think she'll win so easily? Then she notices that Moggy is sweating, hard. Nyn realizes that Moggy is already using all her strength, and Nyn is holding her own against a Forsaken. Moggy's just trying to distract her.(4)
Moggy continues that she knows the function of the bracelets because she's been able to do plenty of research quietly since she was released from the seal. She's amused at how they've mythologized the Age of Legends: she'd lived 200 years and was still young for an Aes Sedai when the Bore was opened.
Nyn makes her move, collapsing to her knees. Moggy leans in triumphant... until Nyn throws the collar and it hits Moggy square between the eyes.(5) Just hard enough to distract her, just distracted enough for Nyn's shield to solidify and cut her off from the Power.
Moggy makes a run for it, but Nyn strings her up with air. She leaves Moggy there and picks up the collar and bracelets, tucking them into her belt pouch quickly so the aura doesn't affect her too much, then goes to the case that held the seal... but it's no longer there. No, if she squints, it's just hidden behind an illusory weave of air and fire. She uses the Power to free the seal, and her belt pouch starts to bulge and sag.
Unfortunately, Moggy won't fit in a belt pouch. She realizes she'll have to leave the Forsaken woman where she is, and makes to walk out a door.
Unfortunately, one of the Black Ajah is outside that door, pointing the black balefire rod toward the museum room. Nyn dodges, and the beam hits countless priceless artifacts, totally destroying them.(6) Nyn has to drop to the floor and crawl away. By the time she gets back up, the woman is gone.
Nyn could kick herself for channelling like that, not realizing it would draw the attention of every channeler around.
She looks back into the room, and Moggy is gone, despite the balefire never touching her. She hopes El didn't run into any trouble, so they might have a hope of escaping intact.
=====
(1) Seanchan can earn higher names, by being raised to the Blood for valorous action serving the Empire. So, she's literally swearing by her loyalty to her country. Which is already suspect because she's had her faith in one of its deepest institutions (the collaring of damane) falter. But, you know, I'm sure it's fine and everything will work itself out. (2) Guessed where Rahvin is, yet? Yeah, "Gaebril". He's always been named right next to Sammael, who's ruling Illian. Andor isn't quite directly adjacent to Illian, they're separated mostly by Lugard and partly by the Plains of Maredo, but Rahvin is… well, he does seem to be pulling a bit of a "Taringail but even more directly evil and can channel", doesn't he? Poor Morgase, I wonder how she's holding up. (3) So, questions. Who came up with this thing, and why, and how did Moggy find out about it? Oh, she says she was researching but WHERE?! HOW?! Where would records even survive, and how would she access them? (4) MY QUEEN IS FINDING HERSELF WORTHY TO THE TASK! "Oh, wait, oh shit, I'm not even at my full power yet and she's STRUGGLING?! At ME?!?!" (5) The thing about relying on your magic for 200 years of life, even if you're still "young"? Is that you don't necessarily learn to expect a sucker punch. (6) Nooo! Not the priceless artifacts!

What is a Non-Return Valve? Function, Types, and Applications
A non-return valve, also known as a check valve, is an essential component in various industries, ensuring the flow of fluids or gases in a single direction. Non-return valves are designed to prevent the backward flow of liquids or gases, which can cause damage to systems, reduce efficiency, or even create dangerous situations. These valves are critical for maintaining the integrity and safety of systems in plumbing, water treatment, chemical processing, oil and gas, and many other industries.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the non-return valve, its function, types, and some of the most common applications where these valves are used.
What is a Non-Return Valve?
A non-return valve is a mechanical device installed in a pipe or a system to control the flow of fluids or gases. Its primary function is to allow fluid or gas to flow in only one direction while preventing it from flowing back in the opposite direction. The non-return valve plays a vital role in maintaining pressure, avoiding contamination, and protecting expensive equipment from damage.
In simple terms, it acts as a one-way gate for fluids or gases, allowing them to flow through but automatically closing when the flow reverses. This prevents backflow, which can be harmful to both the system and the environment.
Non-return valves are commonly used in water, fuel, and air systems, but they are also critical in many industrial processes where reverse flow could cause significant problems.
The Function of a Non-Return Valve
The primary function of a non-return valve is to prevent the backflow of fluid or gas in a pipeline. Backflow can cause numerous issues, such as:
Equipment Damage: Reversed flow can damage pumps, compressors, and other sensitive equipment. In water systems, backflow may cause contamination, which is a health hazard.
Reduced System Efficiency: Reverse flow reduces the efficiency of pumps and pipes, as they have to work harder to push the fluid in the correct direction.
Loss of Pressure: Backflow can result in the loss of pressure within the system, which may lead to malfunctions or system failures.
Environmental Protection: In some industries, backflow could lead to environmental contamination, such as in chemical plants or wastewater treatment facilities.
Non-return valves ensure that the fluid continues to flow smoothly in the correct direction, preventing these issues from occurring. They are essential for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of many systems.
Types of Non-Return Valves
There are various types of non-return valves, each designed to perform in specific applications. Let’s take a closer look at the most commonly used types:
1. Swing Check Valve
The swing check valve is one of the most popular types of non-return valves. It operates by using a hinged disc that swings to close the valve when the flow reverses. The valve is typically used in systems where the flow rate is constant and the direction of flow does not change frequently.
Key features:
Simple design
Reliable operation
Commonly used in water and sewage systems
2. Lift Check Valve
The lift check valve is another commonly used type of non-return valve. It uses a disc or a ball that is lifted by the fluid flow, allowing the valve to open. If the flow direction reverses, the disc or ball is pushed back down, closing the valve. This type of valve is often used in systems with higher pressure.
Key features:
Quick response to flow changes
Effective in higher-pressure applications
Commonly used in steam, oil, and gas systems
3. Ball Check Valve
The ball check valve uses a spherical ball to prevent backflow. The ball sits in a seat, and when the flow direction is correct, it is pushed away from the seat. When the flow reverses, the ball is pushed back against the seat, sealing the valve.
Key features:
Ideal for low-flow applications
Simple design
Commonly used in domestic plumbing and small industrial applications
4. Dual Plate Check Valve
A Dual Plate Check Valve is a highly efficient type of non-return valve commonly used in systems where space is limited. As the name suggests, this valve has two plates that move to prevent backflow. The plates are hinged and open when the fluid flows in the correct direction. When the flow reverses, the plates close automatically to prevent reverse flow.
Dual plate check valves are known for their compact design and are commonly used in industries like water treatment and oil and gas. These valves are highly reliable, have a low pressure drop, and are suitable for both high and low flow rates.
Key features:
Compact and lightweight design
Efficient operation with low pressure drop
Suitable for high-flow and high-pressure systems
Often used in water treatment and pipelines
For more information on dual plate check valves, visit Dual Plate Check Valve.
5. Wafer Check Valve
The wafer check valve is designed for easy installation in between flanges. This type of valve is compact, lightweight, and typically used in piping systems where space constraints exist.
Key features:
Space-saving design
Suitable for high-flow systems
Used in industries like HVAC, water treatment, and food processing
6. Spring Loaded Check Valve
A spring-loaded check valve uses a spring mechanism to keep the valve closed when there is no flow. When fluid flows in the correct direction, it overcomes the spring's resistance, opening the valve. This type of check valve is commonly used in smaller pipelines and low-flow applications.
Key features:
Simple design with a spring mechanism
Suitable for small pipes and low-flow systems
Common in fuel and oil systems
Applications of Non-Return Valves
Non-return valves are used in a wide range of industries and applications. Here are some of the most common:
1. Water and Wastewater Treatment
In water treatment plants, non-return valves are critical for ensuring that water flows in the correct direction through various stages of filtration, treatment, and distribution. They also play an essential role in preventing backflow into the water supply, which could contaminate the water and cause health issues.
2. Oil and Gas Industry
In the oil and gas industry, non-return valves are used to prevent reverse flow in pipelines, protecting equipment like pumps and compressors. These valves are also essential in preventing backflow in oil and gas production systems, which could lead to dangerous situations or costly damage.
3. HVAC Systems
Non-return valves are often used in HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems to maintain air pressure and prevent air from flowing in the wrong direction. These valves help prevent contamination of air or gases within the system, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
4. Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries
In chemical and pharmaceutical industries, non-return valves are crucial for preventing cross-contamination between different chemicals or products. These valves ensure that each chemical or pharmaceutical product flows in the correct direction, protecting both the environment and the integrity of the products being produced.
5. Plumbing Systems
In residential and commercial plumbing systems, non-return valves are used to prevent backflow from sewage systems or other contaminated sources into clean water lines. These valves are essential for maintaining safe and healthy water supply systems.
6. Food and Beverage Industry
Non-return valves are used in the food and beverage industry to prevent the backflow of liquids, including juices, dairy products, and other consumable goods. This ensures that the product remains uncontaminated, which is critical for food safety.
Conclusion
Non-return valves are simple yet highly effective devices that play a crucial role in many industries and applications. By preventing the reverse flow of liquids and gases, these valves help protect equipment, maintain system efficiency, and ensure safety in a wide range of applications, from water treatment to oil and gas production. With various types of non-return valves available, each designed for specific uses, these valves are indispensable for reliable and efficient system operation.

I’ve been trying to live my best hermit life and I wanna show you a peak into my world….

I’ve been making bundles for my future besom and for burning. All harvested right in my neighborhood, giving us an even closer connection!
Juniper (juniperus horizontalis) leaves for warmth, hope and to regenerate my body/ keep sickness at bay
White pine needles (pinus strobus) for peace, wealth and purification
Russian Sage (perovskia atriplicifelia) for wisdom, protection and joy
They smell really nice.

My friend and I went to a little creek in her neighborhood and made terrariums. Mine is looking amazing.
There’s a spider living in there. It doesn’t show itself, but I’m appreciative that it’s there. Spooder weaves a web of protection around the house being there 💖

This is the only photo and video evidence of me and my besties going camping and to the Ren Faire. We’re going back with our other besties. I’m excited.
We love cooking on an open fire, and this meal was especially delicious.

I made a little scene as decoration for my succulents. There is a backflow part to simulate a fire.
My main bestie and I exchanged hair and I wrapped hers around a plant so I can care for her 🖤

I’ve been filling my altar grimoire with so much. Here is some art. The “squiggles” are a Latin alternative used by occultists called Theban. I wish I had someone to write it with lol
So yeah, I’m just trying to live a modest hermit life and level up my herbal knowledge.
Today I choose my favorite meditation music: Dark Buddha
Highly recommend for meditation or sleep.

Check Valves: The Key to Preventing Backflow
Check valves are a crucial component in any plumbing system, as they play a vital role in preventing backflow. Backflow occurs when water or other liquids flow in the opposite direction than intended, potentially contaminating clean water sources and posing a health hazard. Check valves are designed to allow flow in one direction only, effectively preventing backflow and protecting the integrity of the plumbing system.

Check valves are commonly used in a variety of applications, including residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They are installed in water supply lines, sewage systems, irrigation systems, and more to ensure that water and other liquids flow in the correct direction and do not contaminate clean water sources.
There are several types of check valves available, including swing check valves, lift check valves, and inline check valves. Each type has its own unique design and functionality, but they all serve the same basic purpose of preventing backflow. Swing check valves have a disc or flap that swings open to allow forward flow and closes to prevent backflow. Lift check valves use a piston or ball to lift and allow flow in one direction only. Inline check valves have a spring-loaded disc that opens and closes based on flow direction.
Proper maintenance and installation of check valves are essential to ensure they function effectively and prevent backflow. Check valves should be inspected regularly for any signs of wear or damage and replaced if necessary. It is also important to install check valves in the correct orientation to ensure they operate properly and prevent backflow.
In conclusion, check valves are the key to preventing backflow in plumbing systems. By installing and maintaining check valves properly, you can protect clean water sources and ensure the safety and integrity of your plumbing system. If you are experiencing issues with backflow in your plumbing system, consider installing check valves to prevent future problems.

What Are DBB Valves? A Manufacturer’s Guide to Function, Design, and Worldwide Applications
In industries where safety, reliability, and system integrity are absolutely crucial, Double Block and Bleed (DBB) valves have become essential. These valves are widely used in critical sectors like oil and gas, petrochemicals, power generation, and marine applications, providing enhanced isolation capabilities that protect both equipment and personnel.
So, what are DBB valves all about? How do they function? And why do industries around the world trust them?
In this blog, we’ll dive into the function, design, and global applications of DBB valves, sharing insights from seasoned valve manufacturers like ICCL.
🔧 What Is a DBB Valve?
A Double Block and Bleed (DBB) valve is a specialized valve assembly designed to ensure positive isolation from both sides of a pressure system. It combines two block (or isolation) valves with a bleed valve into one compact unit. This clever design allows operators to:
- Block flow from both the upstream and downstream sides
- Bleed or vent the space between the two blocks to atmospheric pressure
This arrangement guarantees that any pressure trapped between the two isolation points can be safely released, preventing cross-contamination and allowing for maintenance or instrumentation work to be done safely.
✅ DBB Valve vs. Traditional Valve Assembly
In traditional setups, two separate valves with a bleed port in between are installed in sequence. This not only takes up more space but also creates multiple potential leak paths. DBB valves combine all three functions (Block, Block, and Bleed) into a single, compact valve body, which reduces:
- Installation time
- Space and weight
- Potential leak points
- Maintenance complexity
That’s why DBB valves have become the preferred global standard in high-pressure and hazardous applications.
🛠️ How Do DBB Valves Work?
The principle behind their operation is simple yet highly effective:
Block 1 (Primary Isolation): The first valve halts the upstream process fluid.
Block 2 (Secondary Isolation): This second valve is designed to stop any backflow from the downstream side.
Bleed Valve (Vent): Nestled between the two blocks, the small bleed valve lets you safely vent or drain any trapped media.
When both block valves are shut and the bleed valve is opened, any leftover pressure between the blocks is released. This creates a verifiable zero-pressure zone, which is essential for safe maintenance and calibration.
🌍 Global Applications of DBB Valves
DBB valves are utilized in a variety of industries around the globe, thanks to their reliable isolation features:
Oil & Gas: Used for isolating pipelines, metering stations, offshore platforms, and manifolds.
Petrochemical & Chemical: Essential for isolating hazardous chemicals and ensuring safe venting during shutdowns.
Power Plants: Key components in steam and condensate systems, as well as boiler connections.
Refineries: Critical for managing high-pressure hydrocarbon lines and product transfer systems.
Marine & Shipbuilding: Important for controlling fuel and ballast systems.
Their capacity to withstand high pressures (up to 10,000 psi or more) and extreme temperatures makes them perfect for vital global infrastructure.
🧠 Key Features of a Great DBB Valve (From a Manufacturer's Perspective)
Leading manufacturers like ICCL highlight these key features in top-notch DBB valves:
1. Compact and Integrated Design
By merging multiple valve functions into a single unit, DBB valves minimize the installation footprint—especially advantageous in offshore and modular setups.
2. Precision Machining and Tolerances
The components of the valve—particularly the seats and spindle mechanisms—need to be crafted to tight tolerances to guarantee bubble-tight shutoff and safe venting.
3. Material Compatibility
Depending on the media and pressure conditions, the materials used can include:
Stainless Steel (SS316, SS316L)
Duplex/Super Duplex
Inconel,Monel, or Hastelloy for corrosive environments
All materials must meet international standards like NACE MR0175 and PED.
4. Pressure Testing and Certification
Every valve needs to undergo thorough hydrostatic and pneumatic testing, and it should come with complete Material Test Certificates (MTCs) along with international certifications like API, CE, and ISO.
5. Customization Options
Leading manufacturers provide a variety of configurations, including:
- Flanged, threaded, or welded end connections
- Soft or metal seats
- Integral vent plugs or test ports
- Fire-safe or anti-blowout designs
