4.75" Leptosphinctes davidsoni Fossil Ammonite – Baculata Subzone, Bajocian, Jurassic: Sherborne, Dorset, UK – Alice Purnell Collection
This listing presents an exceptional 4.75-inch fossil ammonite of the species Leptosphinctes davidsoni, originating from the Baculata Subzone of the Bajocian Stage (Middle Jurassic), collected from Oborne Wood Quarry, near Sherborne, Dorset, United Kingdom.
Leptosphinctes davidsoni is a species of extinct ammonite mollusc belonging to the family Perisphinctidae, a group noted for their finely ribbed, evolute shells. These ammonites lived approximately 170 million years ago in shallow marine environments teeming with life. Their shells served both as buoyancy aids and protective armour, and their fossil record helps paleontologists understand biostratigraphy and ammonite evolution.
The Baculata Subzone is part of the internationally significant Inferior Oolite Formation, which represents sedimentary deposits laid down in warm, tropical seas during the Middle Jurassic. The Sherborne area in Dorset is renowned for its outstanding preservation of ammonites and other marine fossils, making this an important site for both amateur and professional collectors.
This particular ammonite comes from the acclaimed Alice Purnell Collection, which includes many scientifically important and beautifully preserved fossil specimens. It has been professionally cleaned and prepared for both display and study, offering aesthetic appeal and educational value.
