The University of Barcelona's Medicine Faculty has temporarily installed a giant heart made by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, with the building's columns acting as the ribcage.
The objective of this work of art is to raise awareness about cardiovascular illnesses, which are the leading cause of death worldwide.
The work is titled El cor secret (The Secret Heart). The heart measures 13 metres tall and 10 metres wide, and weighs 150 kg. It's made of synthetic materials and painted by hand. It had previously been shown in Germany in 2014 and was supposed to arrive to Plensa's home city sooner, but it was delayed because of covid. Instead, in 2020, Plensa donated one of his famous head sculptures to this same building, to thank medicine professionals and students for their work during the pandemic.

The first part of the restoration is finished!

Restorers explain that it has been a slow and difficult job, because the lime layers were very stuck and rigid. In the last trimester of 2025, they will work on bringing back to light the last paintings still hidden, which are on the lower part of walls. They're the oil paintings covered by more layers.
The process has also brought new information, for example they have discovered that the artist Helios Gómez decorated the vault with stars made of the wrapping paper of chocolates that his family brought to him during prison visits.

Photos by Government of Catalonia - Culture Department.

The Romani Chapel (“La Capella Gitana”) in La Modelo prison, Barcelona.
The Andalusian Romani painter and poet Helios Gómez was imprisoned in 1945 in La Modelo prison -one of the most (in)famous jails of the Francoist dictatorship- for being an anarchist and fighting against the fascist regime.
In the oratory of the prisoners sentenced to death, Helios Gómez painted in 1950 these frescoes dedicated to the Virgin of La Mercè: patron saint of the city of Barcelona and patron of prisoners. The frescoes depicted a Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus, both with Roma traits, surrounded by angels and, below them, seven starving prisoners praying to them.
The paintings were censored during the Francoist dictatorship, covering practically all of them with green paint. The little part that was left, was covered in 1998 for hygienic reasons when the whole prison was covered in lime.
This year, this prison was finally closed and it’s being turned into a museum, and the paintings of the Romani Chapel will be restored.
