god it really wasn’t as bad as it could have been but it certainly wasn’t the best. I will say it was definitely no where near as horny as everyone is making it out to be.
so first of all, I’m opening with I’m not gonna talk about the ENTIRE movie but just some parts of it but there will definitely be spoilers
I was right about a LOT of stuff going in, like Macavity whisking away a lot of the contenders for rebirth so he could be chosen. I was also right about Taylor Swift not being in the movie for more than five minutes, I was right about Tugger not having a massive role, I was right about Grizabella being given a past with Macavity, and I was right about the dancing being fuckin bad
I was also unfortunately right about Jenny eating her cockroaches and I literally could not look at the screen during her whole number I was so upset I felt so trapped The Gumbie Cat Number Is A Fucking Hostage Situation
H o w e v e r -wheeze-
Over all, it was Cats. It was a really REALLY weird take on Cats, but it was consistent with the stage play save for some changes with characters and pacing. Hooper clearly watched multiple versions of the play to try and get the vision he liked the best. He understood that this would be difficult, and he did what he could to try and get this weird ass musical on screen. There are parts of it I liked, there are parts of it I didn’t care for, and there were parts I astral projected to get away from. But if you go see this movie, you will be seeing Cats as it was when it first arrive on Westend in 1981. Original arrangements of the songs are used as well, for example, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer is sung as the jazzy and insidious number from the OLC rather than the bouncy and fun 98 version. I don’t think it’s awful but it’s definitely not what younger fans are familiar with.
I think the only issue with the musical arrangements I have was the singing because Hooper once again insisted on having everyone sing live and it really hinders a lot of talented people. Often times I found myself wondering if these people were capable of singing in the slightest. But I think that’s just bad choices on Hooper’s part.
Let’s talk about the Good:
The best part of the film is definitely Skimbleshanks, and not just because he fucks and later kills a man with his supreme tap skills. The visuals are great, this is the only part with actual good dancing, and Steven Macrea has fantastic energy. Skimbleshanks is already one of my favorite numbers in the stage musical, and they get pretty creative with this. It was one of the moments in the movie where I could say for sure I was REALLY having a good time.
Also Les Twins were absolutely a treat to watch. They were funny, talented, clearly having a ton of fun, and played off each other as though they weren’t in a movie, they were just goofing around like real siblings do. I found myself actually missing them when they weren’t on screen
Robbie Fairchild does a decent Munkustrap and has some fun exchanges with the other characters. I also thought Jason Derulo did a wonderful job as Tugger despite not being in the film a lot. He’s self centered, clearly caught up in his own world, and is so obsessed with himself he doesn’t really flirt with anyone or focus a lot on Victoria for too long because he’s just so in love with himself and what he wants. And honestly that is basically just tugger.
The visuals are also really nice. The sets and practical effects help the movie feel more real and bring a great sense of life to this world that is happening right under the human one. The whole movie has this lovely, dream like quality to it, and it helped remind everyone we weren’t supposed to take it so seriously.
There were also a moment with Munkustrap that I thought was really cute, where Jenny complains she’s just as good as Tugger because she can break dance too. You hear Munkustrap chuckle and say “oh yeah? show me.” in a really playful way and it was adorable, even if it resulted in me seeing Rebel Wilson pop and lock,
Lastly, and this is a big one I know a lot of fans were angry about: Misto is implied to like victoria, but it’s never stated that they end up together. Actually a lot of their interactions can be interpreted as Just Friends Being Pals. It’s definitely not as big of a problem as a lot of people were making it out to be, but it’s just not interesting and doesn’t really matter to the plot.
I liked more of it than I was expecting, especially the little shout outs to Eliot’s original drafts of the poems. I’m seeing it again tomorrow with friends so I’ll probably post more about the things I missed (i seriously missed a lot of the gumbie cat number because i was too horrified to look so maybe i will be braver this time)
NOW THE BAD!!!
This is literally the worst fucking Macavity ever and Idris Elba had every right to be as piss drunk as he was at the premier. In fact I’m pretty sure he was drunk for a majority of the film. It’s very clear he is not having a good time, he is not enjoying the story, and he doesn’t want to be there. Granted, I’m willing to place a lot of the blame on Hooper’s take on the story, which required Macavity to be a greater presence, but a lot of what we see is a clowning, pathetic, loser who is throwing a tantrum because he isn’t getting his way and he’s very very naked for most of it. His last moments in the film were so laughable, so embarrassing, and so unbelievably desperate that I could barely watch. There is no dignity in Elba’s performance, and nothing mysterious or threatening about him. It’s not just 2019 Macavity that hurts this movie though, it’s how Macavity changes a massive part of the story with his nonsense, but I’m saving that for last because it’s a big one and I hate it!
Victoria is basically really bland. There was absolutely no reason to try and make this from her perspective. Like Webber and Hooper say they wanted her to serve as the character we see the world through but she’s bland, uninteresting, and just very boring. I understand their reasoning for making her the lead, as Victoria is a very recognizable character and easy to follow in dark lighting and crowded dancing, but she just simply exists to stare in wonder and ask questions that are answered in songs that she will stare in wonder over. If they wanted to have the audience experience the world through a character they probably should have gone with Munkustrap or something considering he’s narrating a majority of the film and knows what’s going on and can explain things a little better. He’s also a stronger character. Victoria is boasted to be this strong but shy little thing who approaches this new world with curiosity and hope and she’s really not. She doesn’t really get the chance to do or say anything that would help with the plot. she barely speaks to anyone but munk or misto, and it is very much a downgrade from her stage counterpart. Frankie Hayward is a very pretty dancer, but she’s not given much to work with and I found myself not caring in the slightest what she was up to.
This also leads into Beautiful Ghosts, which I posted about before so I’ll just leave this here and move on because I’ve said all I can say and I have more important things to talk about regarding Grizabella. to summarize, I was right and the song sucked.
The dancing is lamentable mess as well. God I sometimes forgot they were dancing. They are moving, but it’s not dancing. I would say only Les Twins and Jaih Bote were the clear dancers because they were pretty much the only ones allowed to put their own personal spins on the choreography. I’ve said it so many times and I will say it again Andy Blankenbluer is a fucking awful choreographer. His work is claustrophobic and ugly to look at. You lose the person in the movement but in the sense that you really don’t care if you see them again. Blankenbluer has stated so many times he feels as though audiences don’t have the attention spans for long dances sequences anymore and want more than one thing to see, but for the love of god could you give us something to look at? The dances are quick, ugly, and the moves are put down before they can make a good impression. He has no understanding of how to define a character through movement, which makes telling everyone apart very difficult, especially since the designs are already so unrecognizale. His work was atrocious in the 2016 Cats Revival, but at least he had Gillian Lynne’s original choreography to lean on. Without the backing of better choreographers, his work is downright forgettable.
Now the Big One, the inexcusable and awful part that I hate hate hate: Grizabella.
God I was rooting for her we were all rooting for her. Remember how in the 98 film she’s this broken down, cast aside, character barely hanging by a thread? Yeah in this she not only is given a throw away past where she chooses to side with Macavity for some unknown reason, but she’s chosen as a last resort. Yeah. Remember how I said Macavity’s plot paves the way for the mishandling of a beloved and tragic character. This is it. After Macavity steals literally everyone who is competing for rebirth, after Old D is returned, the Jellicles realize they have no one to choose from for rebirth. Victoria goes outside, brings Grizabella in, they sing memory, and she gets chosen. It is framed in a way that the cats all realize how badly she has it, but oh my god does it come off as heartless, careless and pis aller. Old D has no interaction with Grizabella until this point. The Jellicles don’t really interact with her unless to shoo her away. She is basically a background character for the whole movie. Giving her a past with Macavity was pointless. It never comes up. Macavity never sees her in the film. It’s never stated why she chose him or what she did with him. There is not a shred of dignity in Hudson’s performance, and I fully attribute that to Hooper making all his actors sing on set. Grizabella comes off as pitiable, but not enough to want to see her be reborn. It was downright heartless.
OVERALL!!
I give this movie a 6/10 stars. When they are doing Cats, it’s pretty enjoyable. Not everything I wanted, and some things I genuinely didn’t fucking ask for, but overall it is not as big of a problem as I thought it was going to be. I think if you’re apprehensive or angry about the film, I think you should give it a watch and you’ll either like it or you won’t.
you should definitely not expect the 98 version, because no version will ever be that perfect, but go in with an open mind and give it a chance.
#cats#cats 2019#cats movie#probably the only horn dog scene#was when munk was high out of his mind#and writhing on the table like he was getting rawed to kingdom come#that was certainly a scene i watched with my eyes#and enjoyed

this most likely will never escape my drafts but if it did, hEr3.
here is the descriptions of all of my ocs and everything you need to know about my paracosm/books !
i have goldfish memory so most likely i will take this down numerous times to edit it or add info.
quite a few clear-ups before i start—
•my oc vampire’s kryptonite is silver. ex; silver bullets, particles of silver, smell of silver (damages lungs and makes being cough or wheeze depending on the time exposed) vampires are not affected by the touch of silver but if the internal system comes within contact of the metal, the vampire will react by death. silver is the only thing that can poison or potentially kill them.
•one of the ways a sovran can be killed is through heir pregnancy. sovranty is through the sovran and the sovran’s heir. there can only ever be one sovran and one sovran heir at a time so if the sovran’s heir gets pregnant or impregnates (bond or not), the original sovran dies, the sovran’s heir becomes the sovran and the original sovran’s heir’s son/daughter is the heir. [ex; ivan was the vampurity sovran when revrenn got ruby pregnant. revrenn was the heir but didn’t know it as well. so, to stop himself (ivan) from dying and revrenn taking over as the new sovran, ibex killed ruby’s unborn baby. if ruby would have given birth, ibex would’ve died, revrenn would’ve been the new sovran, and their baby would have became revrenn’s (sovran’s) heir].
•vampire woman can bear children but it’s very risky. the woman is vulnerable for disease and is very fragile during later weeks/trimesters.
•scrolls define vampurity. the scrolls were written and enchanted to create the laws of vampurity. these laws cannot be broken nor defied unless you’re a sovran..or someone willing to die. destroying a scroll results in instant death to the holder. therefore, if one decides to destroy a scroll, they will die with it.
•three types of supernatural-to-supernatural bonds exist. these bonds create a link from soul to soul that cannot be broken without the use of forbidden magic. these bonds consist of the romantic bond, parental bond, and the oppo bond. the romantic bond is as it sounds; a romantic soul-connected relation between man and women, women and women, or man and man. the parental bond is a soul-connection between an elder being and a younger being. no romance is involved in the parental bond. the purpose of the parental bond is for the elder to be connected to the youth for protectional purposes only (ex; revrenn had a parental bond with ruby because of her mother and father but the 8-9 year gap between them left for the bond to abolish and reform into romantic). it is not ped0philia unless the elder party is sexually/romantically involved with the younger being while still parentally bonded. although it is real, there have been no official or court related records of any elder ever being attracted sexually to a minor or their parental bond. the parental bond is also the only bond that can fade or break. the connection can fade through fulfillment or the loss of need for protection. every bond that forms always has a connection, despite being broken or not. the last bond is the oppo bond. the oppo bond is the soul-connection between two beings that share an unworldly friendship. this bond is not compared to clutch mates, the oppo bond is the strongest bond and most rare to achieve. clutch mates are bound and don’t always get along, greatly differing from the relation between two beings in an oppo bond. the only bond of the three that can be sealed and permanently unable to abolish, no matter how much magic, is romantic. the romantic bond can be “sealed” or set forever through sex. but, for the romantic bond to be even stronger than it already is, both parties have to remain with virginity through supernatural (ex; if a human had lost their virginity while mortal but bonded to another being, they would be able to seal. it’s only when the supernatural has sex with another being that they are not bonded to that they lose their ability to withhold a better future romantic bond).
•you’d be wondering how vampurity started if it was passed through vampire-to-human venom injection by now, i assume. the race was started through a rose. an egyptian (egypt became the jerusalem of supernatural at that time) merchant created a spell that fractured a human soul from physical form. the merchant, eviolé, split an innocent human named roane, and casted the man’s soul into a red rose. the rose turned blue from the switch and began to slowly absorb the soul’s nutrients. the soul’s needs bonded to the rose’s and over time, the soul within had fully became self-reliant. the rose with the soul still intact inside came to live forever, even after roane’s soul was unsplit and casted onto a human body. but he was poisoned by the rose’s glucose and had became in need of inner fluid, blood. while roane was trapped, he created his own food using photosynthesis. the rose had replaced all of its inner fluid with a human blood-like substance. so, when he was separated, he feasted on other humans as it was the only thing he knew to do from feeding off his own blood for centuries. thus, creating the first full being of vampurity.
•all coven boys were turned from near death experiences and allowed into the coven because of their backgrounds,, ex; they were all lacking something in their life that the coven fulfilled.

jade (jade thomas) - worked alongside finn as a spy but more loyal to ivan, split his own soul to protect ruby as a favor for his betrayal to revrenn in the final battle, soon was casted into a dog (a golden retriever) instead of being recasted into a human (the coven decided this because of his reluctancy to defend ruby when ivan killed her and revrenn’s unborn child), turned by father’s neglect in 1965, 69yo (as of 2016), character visual inspo: bang chan // loner, friendly, level 9000 persuader,, untrustworthy, vague, amoral

Hunter X Hunter Anime Plot
The Hunter Exam itself is just the principal bend of Hunter x Hunter, taking up around the initial twenty scenes, of which there are one hundred and forty-eight (forty-six on the off chance that you avoid the recap), and that is on the grounds that the Hunter Exam isn't Hunter x Hunter. It is the start of Hunter x Hunter, the minor venturing stone for the whole excursion to come. The arrangement handles numerous accounts, huge and little, over the degree of its run, brought together by the consideration of in any event a few these four characters, and these accounts grow the arrangement's class, tone and topical strengths ten times.
Also Check List Of Bleach Fillers
It begins entirely bright, even wacky, feeling precisely as you would envision a shounen tale about high school young men following their fantasies to be, yet after some time, it veers away from that straightforward on the off chance that engaging story to turn into a mission to support a companion, at that point a battling competition, at that point a wrongdoing spine chiller, at that point a computer game, at that point a zoological odyssey that I don't have a clue how to satisfactorily consolidate and speak with words yet it is stunning. There's not actually ever an exact defining moment, the arrangement just shows signs of improvement and better, and pulls you more profound and more profound. The tone gets darker, truly, and a darker tone isn't naturally better (you can have a dim and awful show simply as a joyful and astounding one) at the same time, it works quite well with the story that is being told here, and the messages, and the scores of character improvement, that are being introduced.

On the off chance that you converse with any Hunter x Hunter fan, the one major bend that will consistently come up is Chimera Ant, and Chimera Ant is… abnormal. It's acceptable, great (a few scenes "oh my goodness" great), however it's abnormal. It is a 60 scene plotline that contains the close to sum of Hunter x Hunter's last half, and one that drops pretty much every other earlier settled character other than Gon and Killua for new clashes and another cast. Without giving an excess of away, the circular segment is basically about Chimera, or beastmen (consequently the name), in a wide, peculiar story that devours truly a large number of lives. It turns into a startlingly passionate and human story, with multitudinous scenes deserving of applause. I do have bandy with Chimera Ant, that I will positively address later, however all in all, it is an extraordinary encounter, as are a large portion of the other last story curves. Along these lines, in the event that you are not or were not excessively intrigued by the initial scenes of Hunter x Hunter, which is reasonable, continue onward. Try not to stop. I don't know any individual who traversed the later circular segments without conceding "no doubt, that was truly damn strong".
Savvy Shounen
What's more, obviously, every bend in Hunter x Hunter, from the most basic up to Chimera Ant, has fights. Not insignificant takes on - conflicts. A battle can be nevertheless a fight, a tossed clench hand or two, a deftly set punch or cut, while fights infer something more fantastic, something with system and strategies and something beyond overwhelming your rival. Tracker x Hunter has battles, obviously, however the greater part of its activity, particularly later in the arrangement, is mind boggling, unpredictable fights.

The absolute first scene, in the absolute first scene, sets up how this is all going to go down. This isn't a shounen anime where kinship naturally bests all, where the principle characters will by one way or another draw a deus ex machina out of their aggregate asses to make all the difference essentially by excellence of putting stock in one another. This is an anime where cerebrums are similarly as significant as sturdiness. Toward the start of Episode 1, to persuade his temporary mother Mito-san that he is prepared for the Hunter test, Gon must catch the "Ruler of the Lake", or a monster fish. Normally, Gon finishes the undertaking as usual, however he doesn't simply shout as loud as possible, pull energetically, put stock in himself and blast. One mammoth fish angled. No, he utilizes strategies. Gon, in the wake of snaring the monster, circles the line around a tree, working the power of contact to further his potential benefit and making the catch sensibly conceivable.
It's such a straightforward arrangement, yet it establishes the pace for how Hunter x Hunter moves toward all contention going ahead. It's infrequently as simple as having a solid capacity; you need to arrange the solid capacity, work it into your battle style, lure the adversary, think about their restricting technique. On the off chance that you charge in without intuition, you will lose, and regardless of whether you do stop to figure, you may lose at any rate, in light of the fact that the adversary thinks slightly better. Scene 32 was the main scene that truly dazzled me in such manner, being a competition fight with arranging and readiness that ran profound enough to make triumph everything except guaranteed for one of the warriors. A long round of dodgeball around Episode 70 is another (and no, I'm dead serious).

However, the most clear and most noteworthy activity grouping to discuss would be the peak of Chimera Ant, an extended length of time beginning at Episode 112, and going on for some increasingly from that point forward, in which the customary quick beliefs of "activity" are tossed out the window, getting us gigantic yet edible measures of inward system monologs or straight free portrayal, only moves, counter-moves, and counter-counter-moves as a wide number of characters with a wide assortment of capacities conflict. It is at about that moment that I understood how wonderful Hunter x Hunter was, on the grounds that what it was doing was so one of a kind thus intriguing that I needed it to keep going forever. (Unfortunately, it doesn't, however we'll return to that.)
The Quartet (and Especially The Duo)
Obviously, solid story development and introduction doesn't really correspond to solid characters as well (as last time's Shin Sekai Yori would verify), however for this situation, it does. The early arrangement of Hunter x Hunter would persuade that it is a show about the four Hunter candidates, Gon, Killua, Leorio and Kurapika, which is… not so much evident. In fact it is a show about just Gon and Killua, with Kurapika accepting significant concentration in just a solitary circular segment and Leorio being pretty much only a huge side character the entire time.
Outline for article titled Grexs iHunter x Hunter/i(2011) Review
Which isn't to state that I detest both of them, since that would be false. Kurapika, as I referenced in the reason, is a figuring youthful individual, harboring a specific heartlessness and fierceness after the butcher of his clansmen, the Kurta, on account of a gathering of desperados called the Phantom Troupe. His quest for retribution describes his, er, whole character, reaching a crucial stage around Episode 50, which is the bend I referenced where he really gets center, a circular segment which closes at Episode 60 with the mysterious articulation "We'll see him once more". (Definitely, no you won't.) Kurapika is likewise striking for his exceptionally gender ambiguous physical appearance, to the point that I actually thought he was a young lady until the show disclosed to me in any case (which isn't helped by the way that he is voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro). The absence of an articulated bust, wore by each other female character right off the bat in the story, should've been obvious looking back, however… I don't know. Be that as it may, nothing, I surmise, so...
Outline for article titled Grexs iHunter x Hunter/i(2011) Review
On to Leorio! He's the "typical person" of the gathering. He isn't truly striking in a battle, or especially keen, or bold, or just, or a lot of anything truly. He's only a person, one who can be uproarious and frequently lets his feelings defeat him, despite the fact that he is certainly kind on a fundamental level. Unquestionably the most straightforward character of the group of four, however one I despite everything discovered agreeable and remarkably engaging.
Discussing straightforward, we have Gon. Gon, by configuration, is entirely run of the mill, unremarkable, even conventional, at the story's start. In a world with super powers like hyper vision, smoke control and teleportation, Gon after some time builds up a method that is viably a solid punch. This is the sort of child we're managing here. A kind nature, honest and cheerful. He declines to ever forsake his companions, and in every case determinedly holds fast to his own beliefs. Truth be told, right off the bat I discovered his sheer bone-headedness rather disturbing, putting on a show of being prideful, even egotistical, continually demanding reasonable triumph, declining to simply take a success or settle for anything short of undeniable triumph.

When Gon in the long run gets his Hunter Badge (spoiler alert: truly, Gon turns into a Hunter), he doesn't utilize it, on the grounds that (because of the conditions of the test), he doesn't feel he's "earned" it, and to exacerbate the situation, the plot rewards him for his rehashed selflessness and idiocy... for some time. In the long run, it raises the genuine peril of taking Gon's perspectives to the sensible extraordinary. His sentiments of sympathy for other people and hating for the individuals who might do hurt become sufficiently able to whip him into what must be portrayed as a blood rage. He'd now and then get things done to make me think he was truly crazy, showing the perils of falling excessively far into the "shounen hero" outlook. You can revile malevolence and fortune your companions, sure, however on the off chance that you don't remove yourself to a degree, and venture once more from the circumstance, you can wind up with exclusive focus, disregarding anything that is going on for your prompt objective, which is a snare that, before the end, Gon falls into rather excessively.

Halo Story vs. Cinematics
Just recently I was talking with someone in a heated discussion over the original trilogy of Halo’s story vs. the ones that came after. The whole time their whole argument was completely convinced that the games after did not have the interesting storytelling the original trilogy did, and i couldn’t understand that. This basically inspired this article, in it I want to describe why I think the original trilogy doesn’t have a good story, but highlight a reason why it might’ve been viewed that it did, and talk about Halo 4’s story and how it tackles this reason.
Firstly I need to reiterate what the story of Halo consists of. Across all three games, the story of Halo is very much standard space soap opera fare, you have a clear good side (humans) and a clear bad side (The Covenant). This is the basic structure that the first game starts from. Over time, other factors are brought in: a completely eldritch abomination known as The Flood acts as another threat for the humans to fight as well as other twists and turns, like the elites turning on The Covenant after their fealty is thrown out to be substituted as the Brutes, as well as their realization that The Covenant by in large is an illusion, and that the Halo rings that they are pushing towards for their Sacred Journey will actually wipe out all life in the galaxy. It’s a very simple structure right? Humans (and then elites) good, covenant and flood bad. This is the main rub of Halo storytelling, this is all that it is. None of the characters have particularly interesting motivations or nuance to them, there’s a clear line of black/white. The Covenant is made up completely under the guise of religion creating this dumb populace. There’s no fact-checking, only serious devotion to a cause. The villains don’t have any interesting backstories or motivations, they’re one dimensional “I want to keep my power in this classist society!” For my example, I’m going to use what I’ve often heard is the best story of the trilogy, Halo 2. Halo 2’s Covenant story starts out with this literally who, the only thing you know about them, the only thing that defines him, is that he was in charge of the invasion that found the first ring and couldn’t stop the Master Chief from destroying it. He becomes the Arbiter, not for anything specific to him, but because he’s a stand-in of elite loyalty, so he decides to be one for redemption’s sake. He’s sent to kill a heretic, a person spreading “false information that could be destructive of the sacred order”, being that he knows that the Sacred Journey is a lie perpetuated to keep the power contained. He goes to stop him, but not before he shows a “oracle” that being 343 Guilty Spark who begins to explain what the purpose of the rings are before the heretic stupidly shoots at the Arbiter while his guard is down which is still probably one of the stupidest plot contrivances of his game. Literally the chance was there for the Arbiter to be convinced that the thing he is following is a lie and he dumbly decides to just shoot first, it doesn’t make sense. Anyway continuing on, he begins to doubt the Covenant internally (or at least I assume he is, because the game certainly doesn’t show it! It’s all implied), but still continues to work for the leaders of the Covenant. One twist is pushed when one of the leaders is killed, and the others decide to swap out the elites with the brutes, as they do not trust the elites to keep them safe when they failed to do so with the one killed by Master Chief. This increases the tension as the elites are angry about their loss of position despite being incredibly devout and loyal. This comes to a head where finally the Arbiter is betrayed by a Brute leader during one of his missions, and the Arbiter is then told straight up by the gravemind that the prophets are wrong and the Halo will consume all life. This is passed on, infighting happens with the Covenant, etc. etc.
The problem with this story is that it’s a tale of motivations, not characters, and those motivations are one dimensional. Everyone is a stand-in, it’s a simple tale told in an incredibly black/white manner. There’s no interesting thing being told about the elite’s blind obsession with the religious order, it’s just a very black “obsessive religion bad, second guessing what you follow good”. There’s no nuance, the arbiter’s motivation is completely flipped. I said earlier that he started to doubt the Covenant implicitly? He didn’t, in fact when talking with the Gravemind he refuses to believe what he’s saying. He’s just completely convinced in the end, there’s no fallout, no grand shock to him or the other elites, there’s just a complete motivation switch. Elites go straight from loyal to fuck you I’m joining the humans now just to stop you. Events happen with scapegoats and power struggle, no personal or interesting reasons for why anyone in the Covenant does the things that they do. The prophets see the humans and heretics as threats to their power, nothing more. The elites just want to keep their position of loyalty, and when that’s tested seek solace in a more accurate truth so that they can betray the Covenant. That’s it, that’s the story of Halo 2 with the Covenant in-fighting. This problem is endemic of Halo 1 and 3 as well, in general the whole trilogy doesn’t have any themes to share, it just has a very “epic” space soap opera with a decent structure. It has its twists and turns but in the end it’s a very simple motivation-run story for events to unfold.
If that’s the case though, why do people like it so much? That gets me into my reasoning for why, the theatrics. Bungie knows their story isn’t particularly interesting, they know that their writing isn’t very good. What makes the story stand so high up in people’s heads is the overall tone, heart, and cinematic feel the game holds. What do I mean by that? Let me give a couple examples. Let’s start with this cutscene from Halo 3:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlMvje_e3ko
This is from the second mission, its opening cutscene. It starts with a dramatic sting in the soundtrack as the tone is set, Master Chief is setting down in one of humanity’s hideouts on the planet as they prepare themselves to defend on their last bastion, Earth. Master Chief walks by and the injured soldiers notice that he’s here, and it gives them hope, they’re sure they’ll be alright. They walk up to Miranda Keyes, the Sergeant cracks a quick joke, there’s a heartfelt hopeful tone, with a little bit of camp off the bat. Master Chief walks down the hall while he follows Miranda, looking to the left and right noticing all the injured soldiers, a real war is hell but they’re still fighting. Miranda gives the rundown and sets the stakes, capped off by Master Chief saying with a blunt “The rings will kill us all.” Miranda talks with Lord Hood to tell MC about what they plan to do in response, when they are cut off. Complete black frame, whole power in the facility goes down for a little. Cut to the tvs, showing the Covenant’s Prophet of Truth on every single one. Creepy track plays in the background as he gives a super chilling and strong monologue, no thanks in part to the terrific voice acting by Terence Stamp, ending with “Your destruction is the will of the gods. And I? I am their instrument.” Power goes back up, sergeant makes a quip in as well as MC, before Miranda under the realization that they’re about to get hit tells the soldiers to get ready. Whole scene ends with “Squad leaders are requesting a rally point. Where should they go?” “To war.” All in all, it’s a very well done cinematic, it does a super good job selling the tone of the scene and it has a fantastic pacing. This coupled with a nice bit of camp and some solid quoteworthy lines. This is what I think people talk about when they think of Halo’s story, they don’t think of the underlying narrative, or the characters in detail. They’re thinking of how this story is told. Because despite being a super mediocre and underwhelming tale, the framing around it is well executed, Bungie is great at their craft of selling a scene.
But what about Halo 4? From the start, Halo 4 has an outright better narrative. The Didact has fully developed motivations, and the story has a theme to it, a message to take home. The Didact doesn’t want to kill humans for any sort of power struggle reason, he wants to use the humans as a tool to make an army, for him to stop the flood. It was an original plan he had before he was put into cryostasis, one he formulated around the humans because in short, he fought a war with huge amounts of losses that ended up with his children dying in the onslaught. He has no empathy for humans, he outright hates them, but he is using these humans for a greater good in his mind. As for the theme, the main concept is “letting go.” As I described above, this motivation the Didact has is one from a past now left behind him. He refuses to let go of this past, blindly continuing to follow it despite the fact he’s now in a reality where the flood threat, albeit a delayed not completely destroyed one, is no longer central and applicable. The Chief’s “letting go” is Cortana, his AI companion that he’s been venturing with for a while now that in the end, has to let go as she devolves due to rampancy. Where the Didact refuses to separate from his motivation, the Chief ends up having to give up his own, leading to a solemn ending of him overlooking the Earth he had to save while doing so. That’s great storytelling, clear theme, clear strong motivations to each character. Didact acts as a close parallel, and it leads to a satisfying conclusion. That being said, how is this story told? This is the cutscene that plays detailing the backstory of the Didact: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-4r_5AE6D4 Compare this to the Halo 3 scene above, see the problem? The whole motivation behind the didact is given by a complete long exposition to the Master Chief, it’s not told naturally at all, it’s told as a backdrop to a cliche chosen one the MC becomes, being immune to the Didact’s machine’s power. All done in a TV movie like cinematic, no interesting framing or tone. The only strong framing I could even give as a benefit here is that the leitmotif of Halo 4’s soundtrack is done in the background for a minute of the scene. But overall this scene is absolutely flat and lacks any of the emotional core the series was heralded on. Now, I’m not going to say Halo 4 in general is like this, there are great scenes that do get close to the ones above, specific examples being the goodbye to Cortana, and the ending cutscene in general. But for the most part, the way the story was told took a significant hit. With that, I hope I got across a good understanding of why I think people see Halo OT’s story in the way they do. And I also don’t want to imply that Bungie doesn’t know how to do good storytelling either, 3:ODST serves as a good example of how they combine the emotion they’re so good at conveying with a more interesting story with a team of legitimate personalities and character relationships, despite also not really having a clear message to give either, other than a vague notion of “don’t just shoot everything becuz these Engineers are actually enslaved creatures guys.” Although I don’t understand at all how they fucked up Reach so badly as they did after this with its completely cardboard cutout Noble Team all wrapped up in shitty tragedy bait with an even weaker emotional core than even Halo 4. I have an axe to grind on Reach so I’ll make a write-up on the story at a later time but I just wanted to leave this with a hot take if you want to see more of this writing.

That greenback quantity within reason high, given the $10 buy fee so as to free up the entire version.
