大家好! KY, JK, SC, CY, ML and I attended an event at a restaurant in Chinatown. The event began in the evening, just as the Mid Autumn festival decorations lit up. The guests at our table were hilarious; jokes and sarcastic barbs flew in all directions, eliciting plenty of laughter. It was a wonderful night and we had a lot of fun!

We're having more cloudy and rainy days now. Last weekend was pretty cold, which had me craving local comfort foods. Chicken rice, chilli crab, laksa and char kway teow are our delicious national dishes but where local comfort foods are concerned, a few stand out to me. What I've been craving are yu yuan mian tang (fishball noodle soup) as well as bak chor mee (minced pork noodles). Yu yuan mian tang is kinda like a no-brainer meal that we order when there're no particular cravings.

Our world famous national dish is comfort food during chilly weather. Laksa hits the spot on rainy days; in order to cut down the amount of saturated fat, I leave most of the gravy behind although I do sneak in a few spoonfuls of soup. Aside from coconut milk, the ingredients are moderately healthy; there is no meat, only tofu puffs, tofu skin, fish cake, cockles, bean sprouts and thick bee hoon (rice vermicelli). Some stalls add an egg; elevated versions at hotel cafes include lobster, scallops, prawns, mussels and other seafood. Like curry chicken, laksa is a firm favourite as we enter the rainy season because the spice keeps us warm.

This week, it's mostly slurp-worthy noodles and piping hot, comforting soup. As we begin the final quarter of 2023 (it's 1 October here at the time of posting) and head into the rainy season, these dishes will be what I crave most. Time flies; catch ups with LW and YL are overdue and we've made arrangements to meet this month. Will recommend soup noodles to them 😋 I'll also be bringing Pa out for lunch and we'll possibly have soup noodles too 😋

Now that we've entered the final quarter of the year, there's much to reflect upon. The world has been through much these few years; just as we thought covid and the hardships associated with it were behind us, inflation went haywire. I'll share my thoughts, as well as my hopes and prayers in upcoming posts. For now, time to catch up on exciting Asian Games news. 下次见!
P/S: I forgot to add, Happy National Day to the PRC!

Beehive Removal & Relocation Services in Singapore
Tumblr media
Bees!
Beekeeping has long been associated with love, believe it or not. Love gods were considered to sweeten honey and protect beekeepers in ancient Egypt.
Honey bee Facts
Bees have 5 eyes
Bees are insects, so they have 6 legs
Male bees in the hive are called drones
Bees fly about 20 mph
Female bees in the hive (except the queen) are called worker bees
Number of eggs laid by queen: 2,000 per day is the high
Losing its stinger will cause a bee to die
Bees have been here about 30 million years!
Bees carry pollen on their hind legs in a pollen basket or corbicula
An average beehive can hold around 50,000 bees
Foragers must collect nectar from about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey
The average forager makes about 1/12 th of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime
Average per capita honey consumption in the US is 1.3 pounds
Bees have 2 pairs of wings

idk if this sounds stupid (i hope not lmao) but i was wondering, which character of literature (italian, english, french etc.) would you associate laito with? idk even slightly with some characteristic etc
Omg there's no such thing as a stupid question, and especially on this blog!!! I love answering questions like these as well, so don't worry! :) thanks for stopping by, anon!
Oh man, if you're talking about classic literature or even present day literature ngl I––I really only read comics nowadays (lmao I really have to get back into reading novels again) but from what I can remember from what I read in high school, I would relate the Underground Man from Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky! I'm also biased and haven't retained much of the knowledge of classics I read, and Notes from Underground is my favorite classic novel, tied with A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens.
But if you haven't read it, it's basically this fictional man telling you about his life and some philosophy rants, and you come to find out he's this nihilistic, sadomasochistic man who just kinda hates humans. He's pretty complex from what I remember, and kinda reminds me of some of Laito's inner workings, especially in HDB where he projects a lot of his own feelings and trauma onto other people. But they can be vastly different in aspects, so I don't think the Underground Man is exactly like Laito, but I totally recommend reading it for some good philosophy reading!
I'm gonna toss this question to @nam00n who knows about classic literature way more than I do! And I'm pretty sure she also has an answer as well :) we've kinda talked about it!
if you don't wanna talk about it Bee that's totally fine tho!!!
But thanks again anon, this was a very interesting question! If anyone else has characters they relate Laito with in literature (and if I also think of any more I'll reblog this with my other answers!) feel free to let me know! I would love to see everyone's responses!

Started reno journey the moment we finished the wedding in May 2021. Sourcing ID, deciding on a million things, emptying bank account. Then waiting anxiously for HDB to give us our keys. Once we got it, it was a whirlwind. Excited, disappointed, happy, sad.. haha. The last 2 weeks have been hectic affff. And the last 2 days as we prep to move in.. is even more so tiring like fuckkk. Yesterday (fri) .. started work at 7.30am so i can end work at 5.30.. only to OT till 6.30. Then rush over to last min buy cny clothes haha. And then rush to the house. Minimal cleaning. Today (sat) - i.e day 0 was the mosttttt tiring. In the morning, we went to Giant. So much to buy. So many people. Came home, wait for wallhub guys to come - settled wallpapers. ID came. IKEA delivery came. Spent 4 hrs fixing the damn chest of drawers. Had a very late dinner. Tried hae bee hiam Texas chicken. Immediately lao sai. Came back, unwrapped bed, change bedsheets. Unwrapped sofa. Went 4 trips to the dumpster to clear allll the debris and packaging. Then sweep, magic clean, magic clean again and finally bathed and now just lying here. Enjoying my fruits of labour. Damn. The feeling. Im just soooo tired. But fucking happy and grateful. https://www.instagram.com/p/CZVgL7qPBDsNG1TnCG5dfKn5wJuFN6hZpy17-00/?utm_medium=tumblr

WHAT IS A PEST CONTROL OPERATOR (PCO) IN SINGAPORE?
Pest Control Operator (PCO) is the official terminology for pest control companies/personnel operating in Singapore. Their job is to help you exterminate or remove pests from your home or office spaces. You will likely have encountered them before as they are responsible for things such as fumigation in industrial/commercial/residential places, termite removal, bee hive removal, rodents control and many other services by pests control company in Singapore.
Whether you live in an HDB or a condominium, you’ll often see pest control Singapore fogging the general area to prevent pests like mosquitoes. If you have pests inside your home, you’ll need to engage these PCOs on an individual basis to help you to deal with them.
What can Pest Control Singapore Companies Help You With? You may be wondering when you should engage a pest control company in Singapore. Is the problem serious enough? Can you handle the pest by yourself? Here are some common scenarios where you will need professional pest control in Singapore.
1. Termite Control Have you spotted signs of termites at home? If so, it is time to get rid of them by doing pest contrrol. Termites are destroyers of homes – especially wooden furnishings. The longer you let the termites stay, the more damage they will cause. It is essential to get rid of them as soon as possible to minimize the damage to your property. If you have termites, you need the help of a termite control Singapore as they are almost impossible to handle yourself.
Tumblr media
2. Rodent Pest Control Rodents (or rats) are a serious problem if your area has them. Within a short period of time, their population can multiply to hundreds. The key is to effectively stop them before that happens.
If your home, offices or F&B establishment has a problem with rodents, it is important to contact a pest control Singapore company immediately. It needs to be solved as quickly as possible. You do not want them to run rampant and be out of control. A reliable pest control company in Singapore should be able to stamp out the rampant rats in no time.
Tumblr media
3. Bed Bugs Bed bugs are a horrid pest. They feed on blood, your blood! During the day, they hide. In the night, bed bugs become active and come out to torment us. Their bites are very itchy and are often situated in clusters.
Bed bugs are notoriously hard to get rid of. A Singapore pests control is your best bet. With their experience and also their professional equipment, they can ensure that all the bed bugs are eliminated. We will not recommend getting rid of bed bugs by yourself because the task is a tall order. If you are unable to do so and there is no professional help, the bed bugs might even spread to other rooms in your house, or worst, to your neighbour’s house!
Tumblr media
4. Cockroaches Control Cockroaches are a common home pest. If you only see them in very small numbers and on irregular occasions, you might not need a pest control company. You can buy cockroach poison at any supermarket such as NTUC or Giant to have them eradicated.
However, if they are coming in significant numbers; you may be looking at a cockroach infestation. That is when you need the help of pest control professionals to get rid of them. They will not only eliminate the cockroaches but also help decrease the chances of them returning in the future. There are also known cockroaches species that mutated. These cockroaches are not easy to remove and it is best that you engage a reliable and professional pests control company in Singapore to help you.
5. Mosquito Control Mosquitoes are a pest that thrives in the hot and humid weather of Singapore. They can be a very dangerous pest as they can spread deadly diseases such as dengue fever. The NEA takes a very serious view on mosquito breeding – even if it is accidental.
If you suspect that your area is a mosquito breeding ground, it is good to get a pests control Singapore to check it out. They can eliminate the mosquitoes and also give you tips and tricks on how to stop them from coming back. Mosquitoes are not laughing matters. 1 bite from them can potentially cause great pain or even death. Do call your reliable pest control companies to help you with it.

August 7-13 2017 [Week 13]
Nowadays at work I have been transitioning towards administrative tasks, but I still operated the NextSeq and MiSeq sequencers. On Monday August 7, we went to the cafeteria in the Ministry of Education building nearby. I ordered a ‘healthy’ meal, which was a brown rice bowl with corn, spinach, purple cabbage, and tender chicken strips. Worst mistake of my life. The service was impeccably slow. They also messed up my order and placed a fat raw egg on top of the vegetables when I clearly asked for no egg. On top of that, the meal was expensive compared to Singaporean standards and not delicious at all. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone, that’s for sure.
Click ‘Text’ to read the rest of the post!
Tumblr media
Worst meal I’ve had in Singapore so far. Don’t let the looks of this deceive you.
August 9 was National Day, which means we get a day off! Happy 52nd birthday to Singapore! It was so weird to think that I was here last year during National Day too. This year, I stayed home and rested because I didn’t feel like participating in the festivities since I heard it was ‘people mountain people sea’ in the parade. Everybody else went out for festivities or to run errands, so I stayed home alone in the peace and quiet. In the afternoon, I swam a few laps.
On Thursday August 10, we went to Holland Village hawker centre for the first time. The shuttle bus at work goes to Holland Village on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Ghim Moh for the rest of the weekdays. I ordered chicken hor fun, which was shredded chicken and kai lan in glass rice noodles. It was a light meal. but the noodle type was not my favourite. For dessert, I ordered rojak, which consisted of pineapples, cucumber, dried tofu, chinese donut, and pear in a tangy dressing with peanut bits on top. It sounds like an eclectic dessert but it’s one of my favourites.
Tumblr media
Delicious but not my favourite.
Tumblr media
One of my favourite desserts!
Friday August 11 was a great day because I discovered a new dessert stall at Ghim Moh! They sell all types of Singaporean desserts. For my main course I ordered fishball and wonton noodles in tomato sauce, then quickly moved on to dessert. After my disappointment in the bubur chacha I had at the Marina Bay mall, I decided to try the one here. It turned out to be the most delicious bubur chacha I’ve ever had! The coconut soup had a creamy consistency with lots of sweet potato, yam, and jellies. There wasn’t an overwhelming amount of shaved ice so I was able to enjoy the yams. I decided to try a new dessert each time I come here since I believe the hawker centres have better culinary skills than food courts.
Tumblr media
These noodles are hard and chewy, which I like. I didn’t take a picture of the dessert :(
Dinner was at Mellben Seafood, apparently one of the most famous chili crab restaurants in Singapore. The restaurant is located below HDB buildings which resemble a coffee shop, but the setting was in the style of a restaurant. We ordered claypot bee hoon crab and black pepper crab along with a plethora of other seafood and vegetables. Although I’m not a seafood fanatic, the crab was top-notch. I enjoyed the soup of the claypot bee hoon crab but did not eat any of the crab meat since I ate a leg of the black pepper crab and died of spiciness. The damage done was upwards in the hundreds.
Tumblr media
Claypot bee hoon crab which came with noodles and refreshing soup.
Tumblr media
Very spicy black pepper crab.
Tumblr media
The crabs along with other vegetables. The cereal prawns to the left was my favourite dish of the meal not for the prawns but for the cereal :)
The foodventures continued on Saturday August 12. We visited Old Airport Food Centre for lunch. Each person ordered a dish for us to share. I bought fried kway teow and mango sticky rice. Mango sticky rice was amazing! The dish was basically glutinous rice with mango slices on top and drizzled with coconut milk. I was in heaven and wanted to eat all of it, but there were so many other delicious dishes. I definitely need to come back. After eating, I met up with my friend to shop around Orchard Road. However, our main goal was to go to Matcha House for dessert. Since I was stuffed to the brim from lunch, we walked around the malls to make ourselves hungry. Close to dinnertime, we went to Matcha House and ordered the Twin Dango Set, which was rice dumplings on a stick with matcha and peanut powder with fruits and vanilla ice-cream, and the matcha tiramisu cake. The rice dumplings were mediocre since they were plain even with the toppings. On the other hand, the tiramisu was delicious and creamy. Since we stuffed ourselves with dessert, we went to Plaza Singapura to walk it off then ordered some dim sum for dinner. It was a tiring day full of eating. I could feel myself putting on pounds by the minute. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every moment of it.
Tumblr media
Twin Dango Set. Mediocre.
Tumblr media
Tiramisu. Delicious.
You probably thought that my foodventures would be over, but surprise! Lunch on Sunday August 13 was at Crystal Jade restaurant at Causeway Point. Since my relatives were leaving soon, they treated us to a sumptuous meal. I had no idea Crystal Jade was a michelin star restaurant until I searched it up, making it my first michelin star restaurant experience. We ordered dim sum, vegetables, and meat dishes. The service was incredibly slow. We received one dish every 10 or so minutes, which was quickly consumed since the portions were small. Even though the dishes tasted delicious, the service was a complete let-down. I may return in the future but probably only for dim sum since that was their best feature.
Tumblr media
Not the best michelin star experience due to the slow service.
I probably put on 3 trillion pounds this weekend since I ate too much savoury and oily food but it was all for the Singaporean foodie experience.

A Bad Case of Influencer Part 2
A Bad Case of Influencer Part 2.
...
(To her amazement, her Facebook following isn’t shabby at 90K Likes, despite the fact she hardly touches it apart from linking her Instagram to it—a no-no according to the “gurus”. B*tch, please.)
Jeres would be quite happy to simply continue bewitching the public and getting paid to look pretty, if time was on her side. She knows that at the (ripe) age of 28, in one or two years, she will probably lose out to younger social influencers who are more willing to undergo more extreme surgeries to look even more Instagram-worthy; who are more willing to Snapchat what their boobs look like after augmentation.
(The thought occurs to her, fleetingly, that maybe Instagram won’t be around in two years, and neither will “social influencers”. But she brushes it out of her mind. No time for ridiculous notions! She needs to get her hair fixed right now.)
Sighing, she gets off her pink armchair and picks up her phone. She knows it’s a little too soon to call, but surely Dave at Tomlinson Hair will give her a much-needed hair makeover. She might even—gasp—give him a freebie Instagram and Snapchat in return.
Looks like she’ll have to call that dreaded Garry and ask him to come down and take her photos, and pay him ten whole dollars plus Uber fee. Not even her legendary dimples can melt that bastard’s heart.
 * * *
 Ping!
Ping! Ping! Ping! Ping!
Ping! Ping!
Jeres opens her eyes at the sound of her iPhone exploding… with Whatsapp messages and iMessages. She knows it’s something important. But just five… minutes…more…
“Ah Bee!”
The sound of her sister’s voice jerks her awake. She sits up crossly. “What lah? Why cannot let me sleep?”
“The ranking of Top Social Influencers is out in the Straits Times this morning!”
How could she have forgotten about the ranking, the most important mainstream event of the year, the only reason on earth web personalities actually go out and buy physical copies of the national newspaper?
It registers briefly that this scenario is heavy with irony.
Jeres heaves her 169-centimetre frame out of bed, and grabbing her phone, dashes out to the living room. Her father is reading—sitting in the branded massage chair she was gifted last Christmas—the Life! section. Jeres spots her own photo in the collage on the front page.
“Pa, can I borrow the papers?” she asks in her calmest, most neutral voice.
“You can wait. I’m still reading,” comes the expected response.
Jeres resists the temptation to throw herself into a dining chair in a show of temper. Maintaining peace in the home is very important. It is what keeps a social influencer from being thrown out of the house that she contributes zero to.
Nervously, she taps on Notifications that keep lighting up her phone screen. First message was from her best friend and fellow Influencer Gigi Hafiz (real name: Anika Hafiz): “Babe, hugs xoxo. It’ll be better next year.”
Jeres’ heart sinks and a bitter, metallic taste fills her mouth.
She taps on the next message. Colin, the maybe-boyfriend. “Jeresalynne. Ur much more than a number ok. Drinks on me 2nite. Pick u at 9.”
It must be bad. Colin never offers to buy drinks.
She knows if she goes on Instagram, everybody’s going to be talking about it. She doesn’t think she has the strength for that. Not on home ground.
Finally, her father puts the paper down. He fixes a stare at her, which, despite her best efforts at nonchalance, reduces her internally into a mass of melted lipsticks on the dashboard of a car parked outdoors.
“I don’t even understand what you do with your life, Ah Bee,” he finally says. Oh no, Jeres cringes, he’s going to ask me to find a real job.
“You’re 28, still living in my house, eating up all my rice…”
Oh gawd, it’s the Korean serial version today, she moans to herself while she keeps her eyes in “regret” mode, looking down at the placemat sitting on the dining table, a gift from the pasta brand that sent her an unsolicited hamper of sauces and spaghetti last week.
Thankfully, her father does not go on. He simply hands her the folded up wad of print and ambles off to the kitchen to get his post-newspaper cup of soya bean milk.
Hands trembling, Jeres scans the cover page—she is featured somewhere left of centre in the collage. She does not want to turn the page but is unable to stop.
Pirelli Pang’s image takes up the length of Page 2. Looking a million dollars, she (with her shiny Red Velvet Hair) is wearing an Alice + Olivia embroidered, multi-colored patterned mini dress with matching gladiator sandals. Jeres notes cattily that Pirelli’s oversized silicone pouches masquerading as breasts makes what is supposed to be an elegant dress look vulgar. At the same time, she is sure the vulgarity does not hurt Pirelli’s popularity one bit.
The words hurt far more than the photo. Under the headline, which reads “SOCIAL SCORCHERS”, the cloying standfirst belts out: “Pirelli Pang (@callmepirelli) is the undisputed princess of Singapore’s Instagram universe. Outshining her closest competitors, which include last year’s winner Candy Chan (@candyanime) and runner-up Jeresalynne Chionh (@jeresababe), Pang shows them how it’s done.”
Jeres wants to put the paper away and not look at it at all (actually she feels like ripping it to shreds but her mother hasn’t read it yet). As if powered by a sadistic poltergeist, she finds herself searching frantically for her face. Her mind is a blur as she scans the first two pages. Candy Chan is Number 2, but the rest of the pages are filled with people she barely or does not recognise. Jeres stares in disbelief that she does not appear in the top six. There must be some kind of mistake.
She flips the page. There, on the top of Page 4, is a quarter page photo of her. It is the Bindi Photo. Next to her name, “7”.
“Jeresalynne Chionh, who ranked number 2 last year, fell from grace this year due to a series of unfortunate posts,” the story reads. What series of unfortunate posts?! screams Jeres in her head.
The article goes on to list just what: the infamous Bindi Incident (which cost her 26 Instagram followers), the time she took a selfie against the background of Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel carrying a body to an ambulance (which became a viral photo and the topic of many print media discussions about what constituted insensitive social media—but Jeres read none of that, it didn’t concern her) and the time she was Instagram’d using her Chanel handbag to press the lift button.
“That wasn’t even my post!” Jeres says out loud, indignantly. That bloody Colin. She should have untagged herself from his stupid post. So she is a little bit germ-phobic. Do these people judging her know the number of foreign talents staying in her HDB block? “These talents don’t enjoy the same education system as we do,” Jeres had told Colin, “so their standards of hygiene are likely to be different from ours.” Colin had quoted her next words almost verbatim: “Haven’t you noticed that [people of undisclosed nationality] never wash their hands after going to the toilet? I’m not touching that lift button. I can disinfect my Chanel later.”
Now she wishes she had made him delete that post. He did mention that it drew a lot of comments and Re-grams, but he never made her listen to what he was really saying: that it made a lot of people angry! Just for that, I’m going to order a whole bottle of single malt tonight! she decides in fury.
Number 7. She had dropped five places. How in the world was she ever going to catch up to Pirelli now? Last year Pirelli was a measly Number 4, but Jeres was already seriously worried because Pirelli wasn’t even a social media sensation till that year itself.
Jeres sits, slumped over the dining table, her head in her hands. Sok Choo, her sister, seeing that the worst is over, comes and sits next to her with a cup of soya bean milk.
“Here, drink, Cheh,” she soothes. “You’ll feel better.”
“I have to do something about this, Ah Choo,” Jeres says resolutely, gulping the drink. “I can’t peak at number two. I just can’t.”
Sok Choo nods, patting her sister on the back. “You just need to do something desperate, like XiaXue. She always shocks her followers so they never unfollow her.”
Jeres stares at her sister and suddenly sees the genius in her otherwise ordinary sibling. Of course. XiaXue was the first to have a multitude of surgical procedures done (copied by others). Then she coloured her hair an unapologetic pink (copied by others, in a range of colours). Then she got pregnant (copied by one other). Jeres envelopes Sok Choo in the best bear hug her skinny arms can muster. “One of these days, I’m going to Instagram you!” she promises as she floats back to her room for a deep planning session.

Renting in Tampines, Simei and Pasir Ris: Everything You Need To Know
There are many advantages to having a property on rent in Singapore’s eastern region. For one, it means quick and easy access to Changi International Airport, which is an absolute bonus if your job requires frequent travel. (Besides, the number one airport in the world also boasts four terminals that are chock-full of family-friendly amenities, activities and eateries.)
Secondly, you’ll find that some of the best local parks and beaches are located in the east, including Changi Beach Park and East Coast Park. And finally, life-long ‘easties’ will argue that the sun shines just a little brighter on their side of the island (a claim that’s not actually backed by proper scientific evidence).
By the time we are done, you will have the information you need to decide if you are an “east-sider”!
Basic Figures
Tampines        Area: 20.89 sq km       Population: 258,310 (2015)
Simei               Area: 2.78 sq km         Population: 42, 710 (2015)
Pasir Ris          Area: 15.02 sq km       Population: 139,810 (2015)
Got A Job In The East? Great!
Known as the commercial hub of the east, the Tampines Regional Centre is home to insurance giant AIA, major banks such as UOB and OCBC, and the Central Provident Fund (CPF). I don’t know anyone who likes a long commute, so if your place of work happens to be located in and around the regional centre, that may be reason enough to make Tampines your home base – you could be walking to work or just be a short bus ride away. (Simei and Pasir Ris would just be one and two train stations away, respectively.)
Also located in the area is the Changi Business Park (also known as the CBD of the east), a technology, IT and financial services centre. It houses major banks – Citi Group, DBS, Credit Suisse, Standard Chartered, to name a few – and other major companies including Cisco Systems, Infosys, Huawei, Honeywell, Wipro – the list goes on. The Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and the Singapore Expo are also situated in the area. If you’re working in any one of these organisations, know that the business centre is serviced by the Expo MRT station, which means a quick train ride to and from any of the three estates.
The estates are also extremely well-connected to the rest of the island. The Tampines bus interchange and MRT station (East-West Line and Downtown Line) – both located in the heart of the Tampines Regional Centre, makes travel to the Central Business District (CBD) – and to the rest of the country – uber convenient. (too early?)
For drivers and “Grab-ers”, the entrances/exits to major expressways like the Pan Island Expressway (PIE), Tampines Expressway (TPE) and East Coast Parkway (ECP) are just minutes away from these two major centres.
And if your day-job is an international man/woman of mystery, just note that the by-road commute is only mere minutes from your departure gate.
MATURE ESTATE NICETIES
Are you a homebody? Do you fantasize about pan roasted meals, fresh home cooked pasta, and ice cream binging? No less than 6 supermarkets (yes, more than the fingers on your right hand) are at your grocery run’s disposal.
At the Tampines Regional Centre alone are three supermarkets, each located within the following malls – Tampines Mall, Tampines 1 and Century Square. Next to the Simei MRT station is EastPoint Mall, which has a FairPrice supermarket taking up the entire fifth floor.
In Pasir Ris, White Sands Shopping Centre (located right by the Pasir Ris MRT station) also has an NTUC FairPrice in its basement. As if that isn’t enough, there’s always the Giant Hypermarket located at 1 Tampines North Drive 2 (right across from an IKEA and a Courts Megastore, in case you need to do some furniture shopping).
As you get to know your area, you’ll find more minimarts and smaller supermarkets peppered around the residential areas within each of the estates, many of them located at the void decks or ground floors of HDB flats and private condominiums – you’ll never have to worry about running out of milk.
The area is also well supported by medical services. If you’re feeling under the weather, you won’t have to travel far to see a doctor. The Singapore Doctors Directory online lists at least 37 clinics in Tampines alone (6 in Simei, and another 12 in Pasir Ris). Along with SingHealth, these are useful resources if you need to locate a 24-hour clinic, check where your nearest hospital is at, find a paediatrician, and so on.
In a medical emergency, there are two hospitals (open 24-hours) to save your life: Changi General Hospital at 2 Simei Street 3, Singapore 529889, and St Andrew’s Community Hospital at 8 Simei Street 3, Singapore 529895.

FEAST IN THE EAST!
Seriously, food is everywhere. In Singapore, you cannot walk one kilometre without running into an eatery or food kiosk of some sort – eating is unabashedly the nation’s favourite past-time and this region has an equal share of delicious food finds. We’re simply highlighting some of the places where locals have given the thumbs up.
1.     Ministry of Rojak
White Sands Shopping Centre, 1 Pasir Ris Central St 3, #01-30, S(518457).
Known for their Indian Rojak Fondue, the stall also offers local favourites such as tulang, mutton chop and bee hoon goreng. Wash it all down with a hot Teh Tarik or an ice-cold milo dinosaur.
Mellben Seafood Palace
440 Pasir Ris Drive 4, #01-13, S(510440).
This coffeeshop is famous for their pepper crab and crab bee hoon dishes. If you love seafood, it’s worth a visit.
Humble Burger
Pasir Ris Hawker Centre, 110 Pasir Ris Central, #02-22, S(519641).
For an interesting take on the traditional burger, head down to this hawker stall to try their Chicken Rice Burger (with buns made from chicken rice) or Sio Bak Burger. Or you could just indulge in the classics (with a side of twister fries) – their fish and beef burgers are really good.
Comida Fiesta
Singapore Expo Hall 4, 1 Expo Drive, #01-41, S(486150).
The restaurant serves up Filipino-Spanish fusion cuisine with dishes like Kare Kare, Sinigang, Sizzling Sisig, and Seafood Paella.
The Flourist
824 Tampines Street 81, #01-36, Singapore 520824
Here’s a cozy café where you can choose from a sweet selection of gelato flavours such as Matcha and Horlicks, and pair them with a plain waffle, or something more adventurous like charcoal mochi.
GET OUT OF YOUR HOME TODAY
Whether you choose to rent in Tampines, Simei or Pasir Ris, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much there is to do in the area.
If your idea of recreation is picking up a great book, you’ll probably never want to leave the massive five-storey Tampines Regional Library. It spans over 10,900 m2 and has over 400,000 books. The library has designed several reading areas that cater to the different age groups.
Flip through a magazine while overlooking a football field or hop on the one exercise bike that’s fitted with a reading desk – after you’ve worked up an appetite, why not take out one of the many recipe books available for loan so you can whip up a lovely meal. (Incidentally, the library also has a culinary studio where cooking classes are periodically run. Just saying.)
There’s another library at White Sands in Pasir Ris, albeit on a smaller scale (1,986 m2 and housing 125,000 books).
If retail therapy is your idea of a good time, there are five malls to drain your bank account: Tampines Mall, Century Square, Tampines 1 (Tampines); EastPoint Mall (Simei); and White Sands (Pasir Ris).
Catch the latest blockbuster at any one of the four movie theatres located at Tampines Mall, Our Tampines Hub, Century Square, and Downtown East.
Dreaming of that beach bod? No more excuses!
The sprawling Tampines Hub, houses swimming pools, jogging tracks, a professional football pitch, rock-climbing walls, a 30-lane bowling alley, an 836 m2 gymnasium, and so on. Alternatively, slap on some sunblock and go for a run or a bike-ride on the Tampines Park connector, a respectable 7 km stretch of largely car-free pathways that connects the three estates, and takes you from Bedok Reservoir Park to Pasir Ris Park. And as you explore the neighbourhoods, you’ll discover that the various estates are peppered with smaller parks, and outdoor playgrounds and gyms (and they’re free to use). With such easy access to everything, there’s no excuse not to get your workout on.
For something a little less manicured, take a leisurely cycle to the Tampines Quarry Park, a small body of water frequented by locals in the know. On weekends, drone-flyers and anglers looking for their elusive catches are a familiar sight, as are cyclists and picnickers.
Pasir Ris Park is another great outdoor space that’s perfect for a day out with friends and family. Not only is the park a safe and scenic environment for cycling and inline skating, kids can also go on pony rides and enjoy the park’s adventure playground. When you’re hungry after all that activity, you could have a packed picnic lunch or rent a barbecue pit (or enjoy a meal at the nearby food outlets). But this isn’t any run-of-the-mill park. There’s also a six-hectare mangrove forest that you’re welcome to explore, as well as a butterfly garden and a birdwatching tower. You could even pitch a tent and camp under the stars in one of the designated camping sites – a pleasant respite from the concrete jungle.
Downtown East in Pasir Ris is a great way to spend the weekend afternoon in a game of laser tag or get some watersports fun at Wild Wild Wet, Singapore’s largest water park.
The integrated accomodations at D’Resort can give you and your family overnight fun at all of Downtown East’s offering too!
These three estates are exceedingly self-sufficient; not only would you have easy access to all your daily needs, there’s also plenty of fun to be had. You may be hard-pressed to think of reasons not to lease in the east!
