The Monarch Challenge

You have spent many a hungry night gazing up at the beautiful castle. You have grown accustomed to not only nobles, but everyday citizens, scoffing at you. You are nothing, a dredge who lives in the city’s sewers, but that hasn’t stopped you from dreaming. True, even if you become an artist, you’ll probably still be hungry...but at least it’s something.

If you can survive long enough to impress the right people, you might even find yourself climbing towards the life you (and those who scoffed at you) have dreamed of. Every day, that shiny throne looks that much more attainable...

Rules:

-Create a “beggar” Sim of any gender or personality. Set them up in a hovel and use a cheat to remove all of your household’s money.

-Create a monarch. Cheat the “King” or “Queen” to the top of the politician career, and give them Level 5 Celebrity. Create a Club for the King. Invite 4 nobles to join, leaving one space open.

-Create 6+ noble families, with at least 6 adults (Young to Elder) in each. Use cheats to bring them to the top of their careers (they may only be in the Politician or Business Careers) and raise their household funds. For an added challenge, bring them to Celebrity Levels 3 and 4.

-Create the 6+ manors/keeps and the castle (use cheats for funds)

-Resume play with beggar Sim. Earn $500 simoleons by selling collectibles, wild plants, fish (or stolen items if you have the Kleptomaniac Trait). You may not take a career until you have $500 in the bank.

-Join the Painter Career & Purchase an easel.

-Save enough money to create a one room home with the basics (plumbing, fridge, bed)

-Introduce self to 5 nobles after reaching Level 6 of the Painter Career.

-Befriend 5 nobles.

-Sell 5 paintings to a noble.

-Master the Painting Skill & complete the Painter Extraordinaire Aspiration.

-Complete the Fabulously Wealthy Aspiration.

-Reach the top of the Painting Career.

-Build your own manor.

-Join the Politician Career.

-Master the Charisma Skill & complete the Friend of the World Aspiration; befriend all of the nobles.

-Become Best Friends with the King or Queen & join their Club (their inner circle).

-Complete the Mansion Baron Aspiration.

-Reach the top of the Politician Career, and then ask King or Queen to step down as leader of the club. Congratulations! You are now the new monarch!

-Get Together

-Get Famous

Recommended Expansions & Game Packs:

-Vampires

-Realm of Magic

Recommended Mods:

-Any Mods which add Medieval clothes or Build & Buy options.

Tips:

-Your Medieval world may be as in depth as you want. You may add merchants, monks, guards, bandits—the only limit is your imagination!

-Ordinary citizens should be created; they will visit your studio, and townies in modern clothes could be immersion breaking (randomly spawned may occasionally still appear, but they can be edited on the spot if they bother you).

-You may use cheats on those households to which your beggar sim doesn’t belong. Take as much time as you like in crafting your noble houses, the castle, and the villagers of your community.

-Simpler townies (farmers, traders, barkeeps, etc) may be brought to Level 1 Celebrity, while more successful townies (artists, priests, wealthy merchants, etc) may be brought to Level 2. This will increase your beggar’s sense of isolation in the beginning, and make even average villagers difficult to approach.

-Until you are allowed to build a home, your sim will need to sleep on benches, eat fruit picked from plants (hunger may be a constant companion in the winter) and use bushes to relieve your bladder need.

-If you have Seasons installed, beware! Your Sim will not have shelter to begin with! You may tweak the settings to avoid freezing to death, or leave them on for an added challenge.

-A more detailed world will be easier to navigate (if your beggar is cold, you may visit a pub or a blacksmith’s shop).

-Once you are able to build a manor, you will be able to purchase a Piano, Organ, or Violin. The improvement of these skills will not progress your challenge, but instruments can be used to fill your fun need—after all, Medieval Sims didn’t have video games.

-Though it’s not listed as a requirement, you will need to raise your celebrity level in order to interact with the nobles you hope to impress. The monarch will only associate with the most notable citizenry! The World Famous Celebrity Aspiration could be completed if you so choose, but it’s required interactions may be immersion breaking (so will the paparazzi’s, but they are less likely to enter homes and can be locked out of venues where you wish to mingle with your fellow nobles).

*Any recommended mods, expansions, and game packs are not necessary to complete the challenge, but are encouraged if you want to add flavour to your play through.

BLOCKLORDS, THE WORLD'S FIRST WEB3 GRAND STRATEGY GAME

STRATEGY GAMES: A BRIEF HISTORY

Beginning with Total War: Warhammer in 1995, the mid-to-late 90s gave rise to many legendary franchises in the online strategy gaming genre, including StarCraft, Age of Empires, Command & Conquer, and Warcraft — with each releasing expansions and sequels well into the 2000s. Hit after hit, the online strategy genre experienced a golden age making and breaking record sales. But, as the decade turned, the popularity of strategy games mysteriously dwindled.

Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness was considered a massive success with 500,000 worldwide sales made within its first three months, but future strategy titles would blow it out of the water. StarCraft topped 1998’s best seller spot with 1.5 million sales. Then, in 2002, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos became the fastest-selling PC game of all time, after selling 1 million copies in just 30 days! Following Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Warcraft III’s next expansion — Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne — made an impressive 1 million sales in 2003. Sales for strategy games were only going up.

Finally, in 2010, StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty shocked the gaming industry by selling 1 million copies on launch day. Extremely well-received, the game went on to sell over 6 million more copies before it was expanded with StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm and StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void — each of which added an additional million sales to the franchise. StarCraft II set a new standard, and is now commonly considered the best strategy game of all time. Yet most subsequent strategy games have fallen flat and been unable to live up to expectations.

Out of the bleak winter that encapsulated strategy games, two developers have emerged, and are rising to the challenge of breathing new life into the strategy genre. Relic Entertainment released Age of Empires 4 in October of last year, and rising game studio MetaKing is joining the fight with its upcoming release of BLOCKLORDS, a medieval grand strategy with AAA graphics, built on web3 technology. While official sales numbers for Age of Empires 4 haven’t yet been released, signs are good as the game reached Steam’s top-seller list with its refreshingly modern mechanics. BLOCKLORDS also shows promise, combining the best mechanics of top strategy games and taking inspiration from what many consider to be responsible for the downfall of the strategy genre — MOBAs.

WHAT ARE MOBAS?

MOBAs, or multiplayer online battle arenas, began with Defense of the Ancients (more commonly known as DotA). DotA itself originated as a modded StarCraft game mode that featured players cooperatively fighting endless waves of enemies in four lanes. After the game mode gained popularity, modders continuously iterated upon it and began creating modded DotA game modes for other strategy titles. The modding community had particular success with Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos, seeing as the game’s new capabilities enabled modders to make increasingly complex game modes that eventually came to resemble modern MOBAs.

Seeing the future of gaming unfolding before them, Valve Software changed gaming by officially hiring lead modder IceFrog. IceFrog would go on to design a standalone version of DotA known as DotA 2. DotA 2 was released in 2013, almost 9 years after its predecessor became popular. But Valve wasn’t the only company inspired by the emerging MOBA trend. Between the releases of DotA and DotA 2, publisher Riot Games launched League of Legends in 2009.

THE SUCCESS OF MOBA’S

Today, DotA 2 sees an average daily player count of over 400,000 users, while League of Legends stands as the most popular MOBA with an astonishing 180 million active players. Both serve as modern icons within the MOBA space, and owe their success directly to strategy franchises like StarCraft and Warcraft. In fact, before the multiplayer online battle arena genre existed, League of Legends and DotA were referred to as action real-time strategy games.

Hi! Do you have any advice on making a character aware of information without handing it to them in a way that would be unbelievable/frustrating for readers?

Hi, this is mod more-legit, aka Eibh. I will do my best to answer some of the questions on this blog as Meg is unable. As always, please keep her in her thoughts and prayers and use her donate button if you can, she is in dire need.

That’s highly dependent on your story. They might be told by someone, find a letter, or it could be common knowledge, or they could work it out themselves from various hints or in some stories it could be perfectly acceptable for a character to have dreams of it or be told by a ghost or read it in the stars.

Three main things you need to consider are what kind of information? who currently knows the information? and what are the rules and limitations of communication in your world?

1/ What kind of information?

You don’t learn family secrets the same way you learn a recipe for ratatouille. So maybe your character needs to lift a curse. They’ve studied magic, so maybe they just have a good idea how it would work, but they maybe need to make certain tweaks to make it work.

2/ Who knows?

Let’s use a tropey secret as an example. Peasant girl is actually the king’s long lost daughter. Who is likely to know this information? Maybe the peasants who raised her know and have promised to keep the secret. Maybe a palace servant was charged to abandon her on their door step and knows. Maybe the sorceress who abducted her knows. Maybe a neighbour saw the person who dropped the baby at the door.

So how likely is that person to tell and why? The peasants might tell her when she grows up, simply because they’ve raised her, love her and feel like in spite of promising to hide her true parentage, she deserves to know. Maybe the peasant girl has always known she wasn’t their real daughter and now she wants to find out who abandoned her so she searches based on the clue she has (the neighbour tells her willingly he saw a man in a red and blue doublet drop her at the door.) Maybe she can feel the sorceress who visits her knows something and decide to follow her one day. Or maybe a letter was just left in the basket, to be open when she turns 16 and so she just does that. Maybe a character was told information by someone that they do not think means anything but actually does when put together with someone else’s information.

Or the protagonist can know but there are conflicts in the secrets and they’re not sure how to tell. That’s the case in the movie Secrets and Lies in which a middle aged woman is contacted by a young lady who tells her she’s the daughter she abandonned at birth, some 20-30 years ago. The protagonist is then left to figure out how to tell the rest of her family about something she thought she was never going to have to deal with.

There can be physical proof. I remember in particular, an episode of a TV show about a substitute teacher I used to watch as a kid. In that episode, a young teenage girl learns about recessive genes and eye colour in class (the science in the episode was flawed, mind you, but let’s admit). She then realises that her eye colour makes no sense with her parents’ eye colours and finds out that she is adopted as a result. I think it’s in the horror film Mirrors that a doctor realises something is awry because she’s found unusually frequent occurences of people with inverted organs (heart on the right, appendix on the left side), a supposedly very rare condition. Scars, tattoos, birthmarks can also serve that kind of purpose. Finding an object in the wrong spot. Finding something broken or an object that was meant to have been thrown away. Camera footage of something that ought to be impossible. anything really, depending on the story.

You can just bring in an expert. Your magician trying to break a curse, can just call a colleague for ideas. A police officer investigating a crime can ask the doctor doing the autopsy what kind of poison was used. etc.

2/ How does communication work?

One of the most frustrating thing is less when a character gets information too easily, but when information is unnecessarily withheld. A big trope is a mentor figure hiding something important from the protagonist until the “right” moment. The explanation for withholding is usually vague like “you weren’t ready to know”. So you need to think about what can stop a character fro getting information and how this can be done. In Game of Thrones, Sam Tarly just found out in old records who Jon’s parents are. In a modern story, he would call jon on his cell phone and let him know right away. But since this is a medieval fantasy setting, he’ll have to send a raven to Winterfell and Jon is currently out at sea, so it could take days or weeks before Jon gets the message. In the books, GRRM uses these delays with messages very effectively. In a modern story you could use a convenient dead battery or lack of service, but that will feel unrealistic in most settings (to make it realistic, send your characters on a hiking trip and lose them in an ancient haunted forest for a week). So you can delay the character who finds it out in the first place or you could limit the information they get and what it means. Maybe they just don’t understand what they’ve just read until the protagonist tells them something that puts it in context. Or maybe the information was found by a party who has no real reason to contact the protagonist about it, but will get an opportunity to tell at a later time.

All in all, though i’m a firm believer that truth will out. There is always someone who knows, a written record or physical proof somewhere. You just need to create the conditions that will bring it together.

Mount & Blade 2 is coming to consoles, and it’s a really bad idea.

Mount & Blade Warband is definitely one of my favorite games on PC, because of it’s originality, the freedom it gives you to take on the northern kingdoms any way you wish, the simplicity of it’s combat system that actually ends up being quite interesting and satisfying... Needless to say, I’ve been keeping an eye on Mount & Blade II Bannerlord ever since it was announced. Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem I have only recently noticed. For some reason, M&B 2 is not only going to be available on PC, it’s also going to be released on Xbox One and the PS4. To any seasoned PC gamer and fan of the franchise, this is obviously a big problem.

Developing a game with consoles in mind can result in an idea with a lot of potential turning into a game full of limitations, features getting cut out or not even being approved due to the limitations of the outdated hardware of the consoles. Massive games like Arma 3, Minecraft, Word of Warcraft, Europa Universalis, and many others, would have never been able to see the light of day if they were to be developed for consoles. Keyboard and mouse are less restrictive than controllers, computer hardware is always ahead of whatever is being used by the current generation consoles, allowing for bigger games with more technologically innovative features. Consoles are so much more restrictive, they aren’t fit to innovate and don’t allow for bigger and better games to grow on and from them. If you make a game that is the same for both consoles and PC, chances are the PC version is going to turn out the worst of them, because of all the limitations that were put on the game by the consoles. It’s an even worse idea to take a PC exclusive game, come up with a sequel, which should be bigger and better, and develop it with consoles in mind. And, oh look! Taleworlds ported Warband to the consoles and guess what happened...

Now, we all know that IGN is not to be trusted, but for this time only, I found that their review of the console port of M&B Warband was just what we needed to look at to see how PC exclusive masterpieces are seen by the console community when said masterpieces somehow land on their potato boxes...

IGN called Warband on Xbox One “an unsharpened blade” criticizing it’s “outdated graphics and sometimes disappointing controls”. I could also quote a bunch of others critiques to the character models, map design and graphic quality, but there would be more pointless quotes in here than on a 14 year-old’s Facebook feed. Also, graphics are the most minor of problems this game has. Very few M&B fans will ever have serious complain about the graphics of the game, despite how bad they truly are. That’s because the gameplay of M&B easily compensates for the weak visuals.

Although the amount of text in the game can be a bit annoying, IGN seems to attribute a lot more negative points to that than the average PC player, definitely demonstrating how console players just can’t be bothered with anything more complicated than “shoot bad guy, get ranks”.

They also notice the games lack of direction and high difficulty, specially when getting started. This is yet another characteristic sometimes found on great PC games. You will have to learn things, by yourself or with the help of guides. Once you do that, the game opens up and everything is wonderful. Also, if Dark Souls does it, i’ts cool, but if it’s poor old M&B, it’s not so cool. Interesting...

They say issuing orders with the D-pad sucks and apparently there are multiple actions bound to the same button, of course. Also, as amazingly retarded as it sounds, it really seems like IGN focused more on analyzing the multiplayer than the singleplayer. They took their time to praise multiplayer gamemode variety, but seem to have completely ignored everything about the singleplayer. You can be a mercenary, a merchant, a merciless raider, you can become a lord, own territories and towns, create enterprises, rescue prisoners of war in return for renown and reputation, carry a banner, make your game harder by playing as a woman (lol)... So much to do in so many different ways. And the modding! Wow, the modding. There’s a mod called Clash of Kings which fully converts Warband into the Game of Thrones video game you’ve always wanted. It’s so good that you could buy Warband just for the mod and nobody would find it stupid. But, who cares, right? What we really want to know is: are the graphics xxX!NeXt*GeN!Xxx, and is the multiplayer 360NoScOpeYOLOsWaG enough.

Part of this quote is correct. Part of this quote is meaningless.

“It already looked a decade old when it first came out on PC in 2010 (and received a review score of 8.1), and some minor updates to its Xbox One and PlayStation 4 release do little to make it look remotely modern.“ - IGN

As if the game wasn’t worthy of running on an Xbone or a Piss4 until it got “updated” to look more “modern”. What do you even mean with "updated” and “modern”? Does the game now run exclusively at 30 FPS on a 1280x720 resolution?... For cinematic purposes, of course. Also, yes it got a 8.1 when it released on PC, and you gave it a 6.3 on consoles, even after “updates”. It’s almost as if the problem isn’t the game itself, but the crap boxes running it.

“And yet for all that, this remains a roleplaying game that does a better job of conveying the rags-to-riches journey than a game like Skyrim.“ - IGN

Mount & Blade Warband is an open-ended RTS/third-person action hybrid with RPG and simulation elements that allows you to participate in massive 200 vs 200 unit siege battles and open field battles. You can also get the Napoleonic War DLC and play out historically accurate battles with muskets and such... They compare this to Skyrim.

The best they ended up doing was praising the game’s living world and it’s “depth, replayability, and ambition“.

Yet M&B Bannerdlord is somehow going to be on both PC and consoles. Deal with that, developers.

“Mount & Blade: Warband may not have a carefully guided plot or even reasonably attractive graphics, but it recreates the sensation of living in a medieval world like few other games by allowing freedom to decide your own approach to carving out your destiny in a dynamic world of rapidly changing alliances. Controls are awkward at best, making it tough to appreciate how good the combat is, but there's a lot of fun here, especially in the eight multiplayer modes for up to 32 players. As a veteran of the PC version, which I love, I feel bad not being able to recommend the console version more highly, but this port doesn’t fully allow Mount & Blade’s charm to shine through.“

As a “veteran of the PC version”, I don’t understand why you put so much stress on the game’s graphics and crappy controls, specially on the controls, since that’s obviously a controller issue and not a fault of the game. But seriously, how is Bannerlord supposed to be the sequel we all need if it’s going to have to deal with console parity now? That’s a freaking riddle right now, at least to me. I can’t see the game coming out and being a hit on all platforms. Either the console versions are going to be handicapped by default, or the PC version is gonna be handicapped by console parity. Pick your poison.

It’s a shame TSM isn’t a full game with plenty of EPs and stuff. It’d be interesting to have a fleshed out sims game in medieval setting (without the need of downloading a huge amount of CC). And TSM has clearly the best textures and best vanilla looking sims from all sims games. It was the only game where I didn’t feel a need for default replacements.

Oh yes, I agree! There’s so much potential in this game, but the developers kinda gave up on it :( There are some awesome mods that gives more stuff to the game, but I wish we could add more cc at least. I agree about the sims too, although I use default skins, but they only gave body hair/skin details, but doesn’t affect the skin texture :)

Skyrim is a highly successful open-world RPG game which dominated the charts for decades. Using its success, there are loads of great mods done by separate developers.

It’s set the bar so high for receptive world RPGs that even Final Fantasy XV does not stand close to it. That said, there are maybe a few games on this record that might be on the level or are marginally superior to Skyrim.

1#. Witcher 3

Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is without a doubt among the best action RPGs (open world) introduced into this gaming industry. Many may even say it is much better than Skyrim and Pubg pc game.

This match won several awards and is considered the sport of the year back in 2015. Witcher 3 follows the narrative of Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher who hunts monsters, and this time, he is searching for his lost daughter who’s running out of the Wild Hunt (an evil force).

It’s comparable to Skyrim in many ways, i.e. Geralt can use magical spells (e.g. Award), like the Dragonborn may use magic spells like Fus Ro Dah. It’s also an immense open globe where you can go wherever you want, do primary quests and also have plenty of available side quests.

What is interesting about Witcher 3 is how it rather has that Game of Thrones feel to it. They do not even bribe nudity and gore is the second nature to this game. Why is Witcher 3 a highly successful sport is most likely the combination of its intriguing story (such as dialogues) and its open-world game play which doesn’t disappoint?

2#. Dark Souls 3

Next up is Dark Souls 3, plus an action RPG and was released just a couple of decades back. Like Skyrim, this game comes equipped with a myriad of weapons to use against enemies, including firearms, bows, and projectiles. You might also use guards to protect against enemies.

The story is that the world is a ruin (as normal) and it’s filled with all kinds of enemies and harsh surroundings. What people love about the game is mainly the intense battle experience and a huge collection of colossal monsters to fight with?

Additionally, it is rated very highly among most gaming reviewers and also on Steam. Although it’s a great action RPG, it is also among the toughest to play. You will likely get killed most of the moment.

3#. Bloodborne

Another alternative is Bloodborne game that’s just released on the PlayStation 4 up to now. Like Dark Souls, Bloodborne is also a very difficult game to play.

It is likewise an activity RPG and you view it from a 3rd person view, similar to other games listed previously. The narrative is set in the world of Yharnam that is full of tough enemies such as large managers. Along the way, you’re meet NPCs, gather more things which you can use and proceed with the main story.

At the beginning of the game, you may even edit the way your character looks and one major thing is picking a course, i.e. Origin. Each Origin has its trait, e.g. a coward or maybe a killing machine.

There’s this notion known as Hunter’s Dream, a place that’s safe to rest (no monsters). But, whenever you access it, the critters become repopulated in the world although your health is replenished.

4#. Mount & Blade 2: Bannerlord

Another game similar to Skyrim from the sense that it has a medieval setting is Mount & Blade 2. It’s set 200 decades ago from the area of Calradia and it’s essentially a war type of game Pubg wallpaper, where you bring your soldiers with you to battle.

You could even construct and fire heavy machines against enemies. It’s a sport in which you defend your castle against enemy attacks or you bring your soldiers together with you to conquer 1 castle.

Released not long after Crusader Kings 2 itself, A Game of Thrones is not only a perfect fit for the mechanics of Paradox’s feudal grand strategy game, but hands down the best video-game set in George R.R. Martin’s blockbuster fantasy world.

A Game of Thrones may sometimes appear to be all battles and dragons and bad language, but really it’s a saga of political intrigue, scheming and Machiavellian plotting; who should be married off to whom, and for what gain? What would assassinating a certain lord do to your claim on their land? How do you clamber your way up the feudal ladder to get to the Iron Throne?

Its themes meld perfectly with Crusader Kings II, and this mod realises George R.R. Martin’s world right down to the writing and the topographical lay of the land.

And yes, of course there are dragons…

2. Enderal – The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

One of the most polished total conversion mods ever made, Enderal could just about pass off as its own triple-A game.

German developer SureAI (who also made stunning Oblivion mod Nehrim) pulled out all stops, writing and voicing tens of hours of dialogue (that arguably outdoes Skyrim’s oft-risible script), and painstakingly building a beautiful new world that offers around 100 hours of content.

Within Skyrim’s rather action-orientated engine, Enderal manages to find its own identity, and in many ways harks back to old-school RPGs; it’s tough, with a traditional levelling system, no fast travel, and slow pacing, while offering a powerful story that often ventures into darker, more mature territory than Skyrim’s mass-market take on high fantasy.

3. Gekokujo – Mount & Blade: Warband

Mount & Blade: Warband is the quintessential feudal sandbox, letting you create a character in a central-European kingdom and build them up into a roving mercenary, a heroic commander or, ultimately, a lord who answers to no one. You go about this through a messy, delightful mix of direct combat, RTS-like strategising, and RPG-like decision-making.

Gekokujo takes all that, and whisks it off to Sengoku-era Japan. The world map spans the entire Land of the Rising Sun, complete with major kingdoms, villages, cities, holdings, and lords for you to saddle up with (before, inevitably, betraying them).

Weapons, armour, clothing and architecture are faithful to the setting, and a whole world of dialogue and events has been written to convincingly migrate the inimitable Warband formula to the Far East.

4. X-COM/UFO: Enemy Unknown – X-Piratez

The original 1994 turn-based squaddie alien shooter X-COM UFO: Enemy Unknown has been kept alive thanks to the OpenXcom Extended open-source project. Based on this, X-Piratez is a fascinating piece of punky fan-fiction set in the same universe, borrowing ideas and mechanics from the whole gamut of X-COM games.

Set in a future where the X-COM resistance was crushed by the alien invaders, X-Piratez casts you as a buccaneering crew of space-pirates, robbing settlers and plundering ships until the intriguing plot inevitably brings you into contact with greater threats.

With its unique arsenal of makeshift weaponry, fresh tech tree and lowlife factions, it all feels refreshingly scrappy compared to the high-tech shenanigans of the mainline series.

5. Underhell – Half-life 2

From Black Mesa to Garry’s Mod, by way of Natural Selection, Half-life 2 has been the launchpad for several successful mods that went on to become fully fledged games. One of the ones that never made the jump, however, was Underhell.

Following a psychologically-spiraling S.W.A.T. operative who’s struggling to deal with his wife’s death, Underhell is part puzzler, part horror, part bullet-time shooter that’s thick in atmosphere and experimental storytelling.

The action flows like a fever dream between a dreamworld, spooky home and vicious action, making Underhell stand alongside The Stanley Parable as one of the more artful Half-life 2 mods.

Sadly, only one of the intended six episodes of Underhell was ever made, with developer We Create Stuff’s priorities shifting to other projects in recent years.

6. The Dark Mod (Thief) – Doom 3

The Thief IP, once revered for its revolutionary stealth mechanics and level design, was run into the ground with the facile 2014 reboot. Luckily, The Dark Mod, a total conversion mod for Doom 3, is as fine a spiritual successor to the original games as you could ask for.

The Dark Mod eschews combat and action in favour of good old-fashioned stealth.

Stick to the rafters, extinguish candles with water arrows, and loot the rich and wealthy of a brooding steampunk city that’s somewhere between the worlds of Thief and Dishonored. The base mod (now standalone) is just the tip of the arrow, as it’s bolstered by hundreds of excellent community-made levels.

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age – Medieval II: Total War

There’s no shortage of Middle-Earth-themed mods out there, but, like Gandalf at a Hobbiton pipeweed convention, this one stands tall among them.

So complete and detailed is The Third Age – from Rohirrim shield crests to the city layout of Osgiliath – that seven years on, it remains the most popular LoTR mod for Total War.

It’s spawned a slew of sub-mods too, including the relatively-recent The Third Age: Reforged, which adds new factions, animations and units.

As a sidenote, if you’re on the Total War: Warhammer battlewagon, check out the recently-released The Lord of the Rings: Rise of Mordor. It’s far from complete yet, but looks promising and could yet become the true successor to The Third Age.

8. Fall from Heaven 2 – Civilization IV

Staying on the theme of historical strategy games with a fantasy makeover, Fall from Heaven 2 is a superbly imagined swords-and-sorcery overhaul of Civilization IV.

It transports the history-spanning formula to a lore-rich fantasy world brimming with magic spells, Hero units (complete with properly designed models), demonic religions and its own arcane tech tree.

It’s not always easy for a total conversion mod to evoke a powerful atmosphere that really sets it apart from its base game, but Fall from Heaven 2 pulls it off with aplomb, thanks to an encyclopaedic amount of lore, and a soundtrack that immerses you in its faraway world of werewolves and wizards.

9. Fallout 1.5: Resurrection – Fallout 2

This one’s for the retro PC gamers for whom Fallout is a game of taking turns and isometric cameras – none of this pseudo-FPS nonsense.

Released in 2016, Fallout 1.5 is a total conversion mod for Fallout 2 which crams a 25-or-so-hour chapter between the events of the first and second games, taking you to the post-apocalyptic wastes of Albuquerque, New Mexico (no signs of a drug-lab camper van out in the scrublands, sadly).

Fallout 1.5 is well-written and old-school relentless, which you’ll learn from the off as you’re beset by sizeable mobs of ghouls and rats. True to the spirit of the original game, Fallout 1.5 also throws some dark questlines and morally murky quandaries at you, so be prepared to have your Karma sternly tested.

10. The Nameless Mod – Deus Ex

Another option for gamers of a certain vintage, the Nameless Mod takes Deus Ex’s cyber-noir tone of gravelly voices and shady conspiracies, and amplifies it.

Set in a city that’s a manifestation of tribal internet forum culture, it’s a strangely apt game given the make-up of society today.

Forum City is a place of lonely neon lights and zeal-maddened characters, weighed down by an air of constant paranoia that you must stop from spilling over into self-destruction.

What’s impressive about The Nameless Mod is how it manages to build on certain areas of the original Deus Ex; the AI is more responsive to your actions, and the story can pretty much split into two depending on your decisions, coming good on that bold promise that ‘Every Choice Matters’.

It’s been an interesting year for digital games.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds became the most played PC game on the digital distribution platform Steam, with its battle-royale, scavenge and survive 100 player gameplay shaking up the first-person shooter genre.

Nintendo’s new console, the Switch, blew us away with the latest games in the Zelda and Mario franchises.

And the cathartic nazi-Killing of Wolfenstein II was particularly timely, given the recent resurgence of white supremacy in the political sphere.

Gaming also proved hugely popular with Amazon Australia customers in the first week after its launch on December 5, accounting for six of the the top 10 purchases.

So what are the biggest releases of 2018 shaping up to be?

Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Don’t pre-order it yet though, as maker Rockstar Games has been widely criticised for the focus on micro-transactions in its Grand Theft Auto series, and a transition to a “games as a service” business model. It’s possible that the focus of RDR2 will be the same kind of aggressively profitable online multiplayer model, and not the immersive story and world building that RDR is celebrated for.

All the games in the Far Cry series have been extremely well reviewed, and it’s likely this fifth instalment will continue to propel the open world, role-play genre forward.

Mount and Blade: Bannerlord

From the tiny Turkish developer TaleWorlds, the Mount and Blade series combines one of the best medieval combat simulators with open world role-play. Players start alone, but via quests, trade, battles and political strategy, they can eventually command huge armies from horseback.

Despite not releasing a new title since 2011, Mount and Blade has built up a huge fan base thanks to the game’s active “modding” community, who build new functions not originally included in the game. Unusually, TaleWorlds even worked with one modding team to release Mount and Blade: Viking Conquest as a paid “mod” (short for modification).

Bannerlord is the newest game in the series. It promises updated graphics, an expanded siege mode and more missions in the game’s story mode, where players can aspire to ascend to the throne of one of the game’s major kingdoms.

Don’t pre-order it yet though, TaleWorlds still has not confirmed the release date for the game (originally expected in 2017) and the small studio has shared very few details about it.

The teaser trailer hints that the new game has retained the same graphic – and controversial – depictions of violence as the original.

The Last Of Us was unusually effective at balancing the violence alongside a deep – but criticised – story of relationships and companionship. If you haven’t played the earlier title, it definitely stands up against many more recent releases.
