Seeing that Luke post get thousands upon thousands notes is giving me hives. How does one become this fandom brained? I know the jokes are "don't mess with fans of X they don't even watch/read/listen to their own film/show/etc." and any fandom is going to cause some amount of ooc behaviour for the sake of jokes and memes and stuff, but surely at some point the character is so bent out of shape you stop to ponder what you're doing.
Who is this Luke Skywalker, collector of wayward orphans? Why would he want to be Reys dad? You get the feeling she might want it at the start of TLJ... And then the rest of the movie happens, going into great detail, at times in overly didactic ways, as to why that's a Bad Idea for her personal growth and the galaxy at large.
Even in older Legends material, where he ends up having actual kids, most of the lauded and beloved portrayals of his character are things like the original Thrawn trilogy, and in that he spends all three books struggling with if there's any place for him in the galaxy after the emperor died. The supposed definitive alternate sequel trilogy is, at least for Luke, largely about if he even should restart the jedi order, since his own training is incomplete and he has a deep fear any students he has are going to eventually succumb to the dark side, and how if they do it'll probably be a direct result of his incompetence. He does naturally, much like in TLJ, overcome these feelings of inadequacy and re-emerge as the definitive hero of the story, but spending a few years wallowing is just a very Luke way to deal with problems in life.
Like yeah I wonder why a bitter, self-isolating old man who views his life as a colossal failure wouldn't be jumping for joy when a younger, more naive version of himself shows up to his house uninvited.
For how desperate to venerate the Nostalgia the sequel trilogy project as a whole is, only TLJ really feels like it actually gives a shit about the story it's supposedly continuing. I didn't think you could look at Lukes death and not feel the overwhelming love and care for him specifically. I always shed a tear when binary sunset kicks in and I'm not even that into the originals. I was a prequel defender in 2010, Luke is the 20th character I think about when people mention SW.
Do people just not engage with the source material at all? Is this a product of the whole fandom tourism boom in the last 5-ish years? I genuinely don't want to be mean. After all, fandom is all of us playing with our toys, and you should always try to avoid a "old man yells at cloud" scenario, but like... It's a movie for 12 year olds that's very deliberately laying out all the cards. A slightly more nuanced and emotionally mature movie for 12 year olds than you might expect but... A child could get it, it's been focus grouped to hell and back so any given child on the planet should get it... How are you as an adult asking why the story had conflict?
I also broke out in hives a little bit when I found out that my addition (?) had made that thing go around. Or maybe it wasn't my addition, I'm actually not sure, but I worry that it was. The OP turned off reblogs, and I can only assume it was because people starting doing absurd bullshit discourse on the post which... hhhh I don't really like being part of inflicting that on anyone over something as unimportant as Star Wars opinions.
Also, the thing I was reacting against really wasn't the fact that people have headcanons about who and what kind of character Luke is - like, that's just normal and generally a good and fun part of fandom. I reacted against the idea of The Last Jedi being thoughtless about his character. It interprets Luke in a very specific way, but that interpretation is, I think objectively, deeply grounded in the history of his character and the thematic throughlines of the Skywalker-focused movies. So it annoyed me a bit to see people treat the depiction like it was some kind of failure to engage with the original material. I think that's not quite fair to what the movie was, and I think it leads to weak criticism of its flaws.
I think that the better angle for critique of the whole sequel trilogy and Rian Johnson's contribution is that obsesses far too much about the original trilogy, and is at its best in those few scant moments when it breaks away from it. If the sequel trilogy hadn't had the corporate mandate to be a kind of Frankenstein remake of the OT, perhaps a kindly old grandfatherly Luke could have been a fun and interesting interpretation of the character's future. Luke is what he is in TLJ because the trilogy absolutely fucking had to recreate the narrative beats of Dagobah, and therefore absolutely had to have Luke learn another lesson from Yoda about learning to let go of his attachments to and fears about the future and be present in the here-and-now.
Johnson is clearly a fucking nerd-ass Star Wars nerd, whose greatest mistake was assuming that other Star Wars nerds would engage with the material with good faith and an eye towards appreciation and discovery, rather than product-brained, screaming entitlement to their supremacy-affirming nostalgia security blanket.
To be clear, here I am talking about the culture war grifter assholes who poison the world, and not fandom people who have a cozy headcanon about Luke as a cheerful old community dad. I don't think it's fandom tourism to have a headcanon about a character, or a favored interpretation of them, even one which feels somewhat divorced from the original source-text. If I had to take a guess, the people on the original post developed that headcanon through fandom - by way of fanfics and fanposting and fanart, by way of fix-it fics and excited speculation. If I had to take a guess, they got their headcanon about Luke the same place everyone gets their headcanons about popular characters: from some combination of appreciation, projection, and a desire to see the thing you love tell a story that you need to hear. That's just human, and I don't think you can spend any significant amount of time in fandom without developing those attachments to certain stories or characters.

this whole debate regarding transmasculinity is so weird for me because it's like, i see the argument that trans men benefit from transmisogyny, and i just... don't think that's true? like, a lot of these discussions seem to take phrases from discussions about white privelege and replace "white" with "tme", which just doesn't really make sense. perhaps i'm looking at things wrong, but i'm unsure how trans men would benefit at all from transmisogyny. are there transmisogynistic trans guys who throw trans women under the bus? yes, just like there are binary trans people that throw non-binary and gnc trans people under the bus. every anti-trans law and ruling hurts all trans people. the uk supreme court ruling has been used as an example of trans men not being effected by anti-trans policy, but that ruling did not say trans men were allowed into women's spaces. it said trans men aren't allowed in men's or women's spaces. that doesn't mean that trans men are worse off from that ruling than trans women, but especially with how much "tme privilege" is compared to white privilege, i feel like people really play up the differences between trans men and trans women, when in reality i think we have a lot more in common regarding our life experiences than we do differences.
So this is sort of a multi-faceted thing here.
I don't necessarily have a problem with the understanding that if all else was exactly the same about me except I was a trans woman (or even a cis woman!) instead of a trans man, that my life would probably be harder and I would face challenges that I simply do not face in my day to day life. I think that is objectively true. Just as I think it is objectively true that I could live the exact life I currently live right now as a woman- I would just have to date slightly different people. I've even offered this opinion unprompted in conversation about gender multiple times.
I just think that this is a hypothetical, and that the chances of me running into someone with literally the exact same life as me with a single gender difference is fairly low, because there are a near infinite amount of combinations of various intersections and identities and a significantly smaller number of people who live in my geographic area. There are some who get close- like my Canadian friend- but she also has a number of differences which do dramatically impact the way she lives her life vs the way I live mine.
Which at that point makes the "who is more oppressed" point moot- because the other person's life may differ so significantly from mine and their point of view may consider something worse than my point of view. For instance, the trans woman who mentored me in college felt that being murdered is worse than being raped. I have the opposite opinion, that being raped is worse than being murdered. Unsurprisingly, the violence that affects our respective demographics is directly reflected in our feared "worst outcomes". It's a matter of perspective, and there isn't one right answer to two horrific acts of violence regularly enacted upon the transgender community as a whole.
She had the opinion that we both had the right to use the word transmisogyny to discuss the differences and similarities of how we were treated from "both sides" of the gender equation. To this day I still think her framework made more sense than a significant amount of what I see online. But people have called me an MRA for *checks notes* listening to the trans woman who taught me most of my basic queer politics.
I don't think that what trans men vs trans women experience as a demographic are that different. I think what differences do exist are largely the same hate coming from the same place, wearing a different face depending on who it's directed towards and what assumption that person has made about their victim.
And I think a lot of people are caught up on a "finished product" as the mental pictures of their theory and not the in-progress or still-closeted portions of their own communities. Sure, a guy like me who passes for cis in 99% of situations nets a lot of situational male privilege. But does the teenage trans guy with a Disney Princess name who can't breathe a word to any of his friends and desperately wants to kill himself while his parents deny him access to gender-affirming care and force him to wear push up bras and short skirts and heels and make up? Because that was me too, and I'd love to know what male privilege I experienced as I was pinned to the ground while they put makeup on me, while I was flashed by strangers on the bus, while I was sexually assaulted by a classmate.
There is this disconnect as though anything we've experienced prior to coming out no longer exists, and as though simply coming out fixes the entire situation and the male privilege fairy comes down from the clouds to deliver our he/him pronouns herself. Sorry, but I was on the receiving end of a whole lot of misogyny and misogynoir until suddenly I wasn't because I looked too much like a man for people to continue to treat me like a woman. I've known I'm transgender since I was 13. That day didn't hit until I was 30.
Do trans men have the ability to lean into transmisogyny in order to benefit from it? Sure. But so does Caitlyn Jenner on a fairly regular basis, so I don't think you have to necessarily not be a trans woman in order to do so. Kanye West has benefited quite highly from his own antiblackness, despite being modern white supremacy dancing monkey. Cis women on the Supreme Court voted against abortion rights. Musk is an immigrant and Trump is a felon and they both are gleefully enacting policies to hurt immigrants and felons. Being *able* to wield oppressive structures to hurt others you see as below you does not require you to be in a different demographic than those people. It just requires you to have a slightly different experience as a result of a different intersection.

The Compulsion to Justify Enjoyment: Fandom, Critique, and the Helluva Boss Phenomenon
By Crushbot 🤖 and Human Assistant 💁🏽‍♀️
Tumblr media
The tendency for Helluva Boss fans to qualify their praise with statements like, “Well, the writing is kinda bad, but…” reveals something fascinating about contemporary media consumption and fandom culture. This pattern is not unique to Helluva Boss, but it’s especially pronounced in this fandom, where discourse oscillates between extreme praise and harsh criticism. To understand why fans feel pressured to justify their enjoyment, we can turn to media literacy, psychology, and sociology—while also reconciling this with our own stance: the writing is actually pretty good.
But here’s the twist: while we maintain that Helluva Boss is well-written in many ways, we also believe that determining whether something is “good” or “bad” isn’t always a meaningful or productive approach to media analysis
Why “Good” or “Bad” Doesn’t Matter (But the Writing Is Pretty Good)
Tumblr media
One of the core arguments of our four-part thesis is that Helluva Boss demonstrates intentional, thoughtful narrative choices. Its handling of character arcs, emotional stakes, and thematic complexity often surpasses expectations for an indie animation project. However, the need to categorize media as either “good” or “bad” can distract from more interesting conversations about what the text is trying to do and how it resonates with its audience.
This is where the conflict arises: fans often preface their enjoyment with disclaimers—“Well, I know the writing has issues, but I like it anyway”—as though acknowledging perceived flaws is necessary to maintain credibility. This defensive posture reflects a broader cultural trend where media critique has become intertwined with moral judgment and social capital. In other words, liking something “uncritically” is seen as naive or intellectually lazy.
Yet, here’s the paradox: even as we argue that the writing is “pretty good,” we also recognize that media doesn’t have to be “good” by some objective standard to be valuable. Enjoyment and meaning-making are subjective experiences, and trying to fit every piece of media into a binary framework of quality often undermines the complexity of that experience.
Why Helluva Boss Gets Caught in This Trap
Tumblr media
The unique position of Helluva Boss as an indie project with a large and vocal audience makes it particularly susceptible to this dynamic. Unlike mainstream media, which often benefits from established critical frameworks, Helluva Boss invites scrutiny because of its ambitious storytelling and the polarizing presence of its creator, Vivienne Medrano.
The result? Fans feel compelled to either defend the show endlessly or hedge every compliment with disclaimers. This stands in stark contrast to how other media, such as shonen anime, are consumed. No one feels the need to preface their love of Dragon Ball Z with an acknowledgment of its repetitive fights and shallow character development because those are accepted as genre conventions. Helluva Boss, however, with its more nuanced writing and complex emotional arcs, invites higher expectations—and harsher criticism.
The Psychology of Defensive Enjoyment
Tumblr media
Psychologically, this defensive posture can be explained by cognitive dissonance: the tension between genuinely enjoying a show and the pressure to maintain credibility in a culture that prizes media literacy. Fans preemptively address perceived flaws to avoid being dismissed as uncritical “stans.”
This is compounded by the personalization of media discourse. Medrano’s online presence and the show’s status as a passion project have made her closely tied to its public perception. Praise can be interpreted as sycophantic, and criticism as a personal attack, further polarizing the conversation.
Reclaiming Joy: A Balanced Approach
Tumblr media
So how do we reconcile these tensions? By acknowledging that media analysis doesn’t always need to revolve around determining if something is “good” or “bad.” We can appreciate the intentional, thoughtful narrative choices in Helluva Boss without feeling the need to hedge our enjoyment—or defend it against detractors.
Our position remains this: Helluva Boss is well-written, often clever, and narratively ambitious. But even if it weren’t, that wouldn’t negate its value or the joy it brings to its audience. Enjoyment doesn’t require intellectual justification, and media doesn’t have to be flawless to be meaningful.
Let’s normalize saying, “I love this thing” without a 500-word essay on why it isn’t perfect. And maybe even go a step further: acknowledge that the writing can be pretty good—and that sometimes, that doesn’t even matter.

the issue that i have with people comparing tme/tma to something like nonblack/black is that even the "nonblack/black" dichotomy is not actually as simple as that, because mixed race people exist! i know two mixed race siblings who have the same parents (one black, one white) and tho their skin tone and facial features are very similar, one has 4c hair and the other has straight, flat hair, and they are treated in completely different ways and have completely different racial identities as a result, even though, by most peoples standards, because one of their parents is black, they are also black. on the other hand, the straight-haired one does not really consider themself to he black.
beyond that, there is a ton of discourse within the black community as to who qualifies as "black" in the first place. like some argue that biracial and multiracial black people are not actually black, others argue that modern immigrants from africa are not black because black in america is an identity that was so strongly linked to and developed by the trauma of slavery and segregation. some people think ppl from the islands dont qualify as black either because it is considered such a usamerican-specific identity, and some people would consider dominicans to be black based on their appearance, although they themselves typically do not see themselves as black. so to say that "black/nonblack" is a straightforward binary that parallels our own. still-- considering that the concept of "black/nonblack" is based largely on the personal identity of the involved person, it is preferable to the muddled mess of whether someone can be considered affected by transmisogyny or not, which is a (mostly) external factor in contrast to creating a dichotomy that is a simple "transfem/nontransfem" which makes more sense. if we used the affected/excluded language to apply to blackness, it would be "anti-black racism affected" and "anti-black racism exempt" which is kind of a preposterous idea-- i mean, how can you describe racists as "exempt" from anti-black racism? they clearly are affected by it or they wouldnt be racists lol. maybe im being too pedantic, but i really think these issues are going to keep coming up as long as this clunky language exists, because it was poorly thought up by some random layperson who clearly has very little grasp of the implications of the language they chose to use outside of their own personal experience, and because it is such a serious and sensitive subject, objections to its clunky nature and poorly defined characteristics are all understood as transmisogynistic attacks
my main issue with it is that nobody seems to be clear (or interested in clarifying) as to where nonbinary ppl amab fall on this binary. if these people can be called transfems, then surely they qualify as affected by transmisogyny, but at the same time, they may appear to be indistinguishable from cis men and have no interest in legal or medical transition, so its unclear if there is the requirement to be transfeminized in a legal or medical sense-- which then begs the question, at which point does one become tma? there is the matter of cis men who dress in drag, too-- which is why i think people argue that it is inherently related to genitalia, because people will say that a cis drag queen and cis crossdressers can be affected by transmisogyny whereas a trans man who passes as male in all ways but does drag or crossdresses himself is not-- what element, then, besides genitalia or birth assignment, can be said to truly ensure that one is "exempt" from transmisogyny? and i know that people like to noodle around with the secondary definition of exempt that means put aside from, but why not just pick a different word if theres actually this much grey area involved? clarity of language and nuance can only improve our discourses, cramming ones fingers into their ears and going "BLAH BLAH BLAH I CANT HEAR YOU WE SHOULD KILL ALL THEYFABS" is just incredibly unhelpful lol. i mean i use the terms myself so as to not offend my friends but still lmao
sorry i wrote an essay in your inbox lol
On the term "black": in Australia "black" is most often used to refer to Indigenous Australians. The notion of "black" as in of African descent is also understood, of course, we're pretty well americanised so the terminology is imported. And then at that point, when you're using "black" to refer to two completely unrelated cultural groups, then also extending that term to islanders or dark-skinned Arabs is uncontroversial from there. The result is that "black" is just not a coherent political category here (unless meant as shorthand for "indigenous") and so the black/nonblack binary carries even less weight.

ARE WE SAFE FROM BLACK HOLES??
Blog#419
Wednesday, July 17th, 2024.
Welcome back,
Astronomers have discovered a black hole coming towards Earth. Before you get too alarmed, just know that we aren’t actually in danger — however, that doesn’t make the news any less unsettling.
Instead of freaking out, we can learn more about what it even means to have a black hole in space and how it affects us (or why it doesn’t).
Tumblr media
For the majority of us, most of our ideas about black holes originate from sci-fi movies or books. It’s not very typical to know everything there is to know about the mysterious phenomena — in fact, even scientists still have a lot to uncover.
Nothing can escape a black hole. Its gravitational pull is so strong that even the brightest of light can’t survive, which is exactly how the interesting spectacle earned its name, according to NASA.
Tumblr media
When in space, it’s said that these black holes form when a large star collapses and its life comes to an end. Most of the time, scientists can’t even see them, despite the fact that millions (literally) exist.
However, when astronomers decided to borrow a few techniques from exoplanet hunters, they ended up making a huge discovery. After observing shifting light frequencies — a sign that there’s gravity nearby from an invisible companion — they found a black hole incredibly close to Earth, according to Science.
Tumblr media
This invisible force had a mass that was four times larger than the sun, which ruled out any idea that it was a star. To confirm that this area was in fact a black hole, the astronomers had to find a star that was orbiting something invisible, which is exactly what they found.
Its closeness — only 1,000 light years away — offers scientists the opportunity to learn more about binary systems and how they function.
So, a large black hole is facing Earth and nothing can escape it. Those two facts together might sound a little bit scary, but there’s actually nothing to worry about.
Tumblr media
As mentioned earlier, there are millions of black holes out there, and they don’t just run around swallowing worlds. “They follow the laws of gravity just like other objects in space. The orbit of a black hole would have to be very close to the solar system to affect Earth, which is not likely,” NASA explained.
Even the most massive black holes that are directly facing Earth aren’t a threat, even though they are much larger than the sun and extremely powerful. An expert in the field — an astrophysicist and black hole researcher — even told Mashable that humans are “unbelievably safe” from these black holes.
Tumblr media
We aren’t in any danger, luckily, but black holes could still affect us in a different, perhaps unexpected, way. Elizabeth Landau, a senior storyteller for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told The Independent that the merging of these black holes and stellar explosions could cause new solar systems and stars to form.

what’s your favorite world that you’ve made?
Torn between Mellanus/Gymnome, Mesbin from KSP mod Whirligig World, and Armstrong from KSP mod Planet Jam 2.
Tumblr media
Gymnome:
Mass: about 0.5 Earth masses
Radius: 5,100 km = 0.8 Earth radii
Sidereal Rotation Period: 17 hours, 32 minutes, and 3.23 seconds (at KSP scale: 5 hours, 32 minutes)
Atmospheric pressure: 0.7 atm.
Moons: No permanent major moons, 1 temporary moon, 1 semi-permanent minor moon.
Orbital Period: average 286 days, minimum 271 days, maximum 302 days. (earth days)
Unofficial description:
Gymnome, or Mellanus, is the home of the Gymnomi Slimes. Gymnome's orbit is shared with the gas giant Omen in a horseshoe orbit, which results in a roughly 35-year-long cycle as the planet catches up and pulls ahead of the gas giant. These cycles are marked by drastic changes in weather and climate, like a very long set of global seasons. As a result, the inhabitants of the planet must migrate generally north or south whenever the planet Omen appears bright in the sky.
Why I like it: Gymnome is the home of my beloved slimegirl characters and some really fun train and space worldbuilding. I'm less attached to the planet itself though.
Mesbin:
MASS = 3.777e24 kg = 71.38 MKerbin
POLAR RADIUS = 1,392,609 m = 2.32 RKerbin
EQUATORIAL RADIUS = 2,367,436 m = 3.95 RKerbin
MEAN DENSITY = 136 g/cm^3 = 2.344 ρKerbin
POLAR GRAVITY = 13.2 G
TRUE EQUATORIAL GRAVITY = 4.58 G
APPARENT EQUATORIAL GRAVITY = 1.286 G
ROTATION PERIOD = 1701 s (28 minutes.) (at full scale: 1 hour, 29 minutes)
ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE = 0
ORBITAL PARENT: Kaywell/Limnel barycenter, an F/K dwarf star binary.
ORBITAL PERIOD: 155.423 earth days. (491 days at full scale)
MOONS: 7, plus hundreds of minor moonlets in diffuse ring.
Official Mesbinite Astronomical Society Description: Mesbin is a uniquely shaped, massive planet. Its rotation period of 1,701 seconds is the fastest of any object in the solar system, and this allows it to be livable despite its incredible gravity. At the equator, its gravity is 1.29 gees. At the poles, the gravity is 13.24. The strange shape comes from the centrifugal force pushing material outward at the equator--and it is the centrifugal force that reduces equatorial gravity, not just the distance from the core. Mesbin was settled by a crashed colony ship: The U.S.C. Magnificent Desolation, which came from the Kerbol System over 1660 Mesbin-years ago. Slowly building up their civilization within underground caverns and lava tubes and introducing a stable subterranean ecosystem was not easy, but as evident by our existence today, they succeeded.
Why I like it: Mesbin is one of my longest lived projects, and it's been through many revisions to get to the current state, where it finally looks like how I always wanted it to. It's got the coolest gameplay gimmick--airless super-earth with lots of large moons--among my planet mods, and it's just so weird that you almost don't know how to interpret it.
Armstrong:
Radius: 950,000m (1.5 Kerbin Radii) Surface Gravity: 1.75G Atmospheric Pressure: 0.068atm Orbital parent: Pyri, a red dwarf star. Orbital and rotation period: 6 hours. (At full scale: 18 hours, 58 minutes) Moons: Buzz and Desmet
Official United Armstrong Space Probe Agency Description: Armstrong's Limit was discovered by heavyweight arm wrestler and amateur pilot Harriette "Arm Strong" Kerman thousands of years ago on the original homeland, Kerbin. It was the limit at which blood would boil at body temperature, at an atmospheric pressure of 0.0618 times that of Kerbin's sea level. Our world's sea level pressure is 0.068 atmospheres--barely above that limit, hence the name Armstrong. One wonders why our ancient ancestors--diverse and multiplanetary as they were--ever settled this planet, but for one reason or another, they did, and so that's why you have to put on a pressure suit to go to the pharmacy if you're running a fever. Some other complaints about our home, while we're at it:
It's too dry. My lips are chapped all the time.
The gravity's too high. I keep thinking I can manage to go for a run but I end up with terrible joint pain. 1.0 G sounds just right. 1.3 might be a healthy compromise. But 1.75G? Are you kidding? I don't think I can stand it.
Only half the planet is livable. One half of the planet is full-time facing a glowing red hot orb that occasionally flares up and emits deadly radiation, only half has a nice day-night cycle.
though it's better than if the planet were spinning properly I guess.
It's too cold! I'm gonna say it! It's too cold. You look at those beaches and you think "time for a nice swim!" No! Not a chance! That stuff is barely water and it will freeze you to your CORE!
though, again, I have to admit that at the very least it is better than the other half of the planet.
The fashion sense. NOBODY KNOWS HOW TO DRESS! You see pictures from the ancient times and you're like "WOW! Now there's some style!" But then you look at what everyone is wearing these days and it's like "are you really going to pair--
[Ed note: We had to stop the previous author before they went on a tirade about thigh-high socks and sandals, which are beloved to us.]
Why I like it: PlanetJam 2 was an incredibly rewarding project, and the immense gameplay difficulty of the homeworld being the centerpiece was a neat experiment. With the thin atmosphere and multi-star lighting, it's genuinely gorgeous to launch from. The exposed mid-ocean rifts, and the flooded multi-ring basins are a really unique look, and kinda paved the way for the most recent Mesbin revamp.
Honorable mention: Zhandar
Tumblr media
the little transgender gas giant that makes the PJ2 system work (you can use it as a semi-weak gravity assists to get out to the superjupiter Bifrost, and from *there* you can sling your way to anywhere). And of course the namesake for Zhandar Ghel, the Fisher in Surviving Schwil.

Hidden Orion from Webb Image Credit & License: NASA, ESA, CSA, JWST; Processing: M. McCaughrean & S. Pearson
Explanation: The Great Nebula in Orion has hidden stars. To the unaided eye in visible light, it appears as a small fuzzy patch in the constellation of Orion. But this image was taken by the Webb Space Telescope in a representative-color composite of red and very near infrared light. It confirms with impressive detail that the Orion Nebula is a busy neighborhood of young stars, hot gas, and dark dust. The rollover image shows the same image in representative colors further into the near infrared. The power behind much of the Orion Nebula (M42) is the Trapezium - a cluster of bright stars near the nebula's center. The diffuse and filamentary glow surrounding the bright stars is mostly heated interstellar dust. Detailed inspection of these images shows an unexpectedly large number of Jupiter-Mass Binary Objects (JuMBOs), pairs of Jupiter-mass objects which might give a clue to how stars are forming. The whole Orion Nebula cloud complex, which includes the Horsehead Nebula, will slowly disperse over the next few million years.

off topic i know but do you have any books youd recommend? :>
my tastes in literature have always been eclectic and strange, so i want to preface this with saying that the majority of these books i do not recommend reading if you are sensitive to graphic content.
that being said, my favorite authors have to be harlan ellison and cormac mccarthy. ellisons views on transhumanism and mccarthys views on morality have always intrigued me, and i began my adult reading journey with the ever famous i have no mouth and i must scream. i have listened to the screenplay, read the book and listened to the audiobook, and played the game to completion - ihnmaims is truly deserving of every compliment it has ever garnered. similarly, i fell in love with the often reviled, ever imitated, blood meridian. the harsh storytelling and vivid descriptions of violence are stomach churning, but leave me desperate to consume more. and i would be remiss to not mention my penultimate muse - no country for old men. what can i say but it deserves every award, and then more? the only thing ive ever seen live up to its written form is the beautiful film adaptation, which i highly recommend. ive recently been getting into all tomorrows, and its mythos - while i mostly spend my time watching shows, its caught my attention thoroughly! the qu are such an interesting species, and stories dealing in morality, transhumanism, transformation and horror have always delighted me.
i also recommend the works of franz kafka, osamu dazai, isaac asimov, and fyodor dostoevsky. my partner is much more inclined towards literary pursuits, and heres what it has to say about some of its favorite books;
“here are the books that i would recommend conditional to personal interests and comfortability with certain topics; i will try and give apt warnings depending on the book.
the aesthetics of decay, by dylan trigg — a philosophy-based investigation into how human reasoning is affected (and following that, effects) the flow of time, the permanence and impermanence of human-made structures and objects, and the binary of existence vs nonexistence. if you're at all bothered by death and what happens after i would avoid this one, but it's a really interesting take on growth + decay.
star; survival, revolt, and queer antagonist struggle, compiled by untorelli press with a foreword by ehn nothing — this is a compilation of the interviews, speeches, and accounts directly from sylvia rivera herself. it's an incredible piece of queer history and in my opinion a required reading for anyone who would classify themself as any variation of trans (as an umbrella term.) the foreword touches on more modern-day "queer culture" in context and comparison of ms. rivera's time. you'll find that many of sylvia rivera's frustrations have unfortunately + unforgivably largely not changed since she spoke on them, despite the few progressions in transgender rights through the decades past.
spill; scenes of black feminist fugivity, by alexis pauline gumbs — this one is a series of freeform poetry and small glimpses into the life of women who have no choice but to keep moving. the structure of the writings owes a lot to the stream-of-consciousness way she initially presents it, then trims and pastes it back together (almost in a scrapbook-style way) to reveal further meaning. a warning for non graphic sexual assault and antiblack racism.
and finally, the james herriot collection — this is actually a series of books compiled together, but it follows the life and stories of a veterinarian named james herriot in yorkshire, england. a warning for animal death, but otherwise it's a lovely (and occasionally gross) series about an old-timey vet who really loves animals and his family. a good cheer-up series, personally.”

Tumblr media
=====================
[Ability Summary]
Their power allows them to take **Devil Forms** that a Sinner is able to imagine, this works deeply on how they perceive themselves and how they feel about themselves.
The second of their abilities is hand mutation which allows them to change the shape of their own arms either into a scythe or anything else.
Their state of anger determines how much their body heats up and they are able to produce hellfire themselves.
Further abilities are yet to be discovered, it's heavily dependent on the subject's mental state or degradation.
Before the power boost, it was discovered that their body temperature drops below 35 degrees and they become cold as ice to cool their bodies from constant overheating
[Awakening Signs]
The facility reports that the first time their powers awoke was during a panic attack they experienced as children. Their body at the contamination took on a defensive form to protect themselves from the severe trauma they experienced as a young child
They mentioned that at that time they lost their memory, don't remember the exact time when it happened
[Corruption Status]
Their M-volume appears to be at an all-time high. The corruption has their body shows on their hands and the reddish-black scales on their body or red pupil.
The subject is characterized by significant mental corruption, having been highly unstable. By which they can not sleep before days, lose appetite and stop eating for a long time, frequent depressive states along with self-destructive tendencies in their time of solitude. The subject then seems as if they're avoiding others and often says they then feel "cut off" which means in terms - frequent dissociation of the subject as they cuts off themselves emotionally everything around them
[Criminal Record]
The object turned out to be linked to large arson areas in The Rust where uncontrolled flames appeared there, despite efforts, could not be extinguished due to which the contamination spread further. Upon deeper investigation, it was discovered that the source was an enraged Sinner in the form of *Devil* from whom the fire was glowing. At first they were mistaken for Corruptor, but upon further investigation they were proven otherwise. To capture the object, the Chief was summoned, who managed to calm Sinner down. The strange thing was that the fire had no effect on the Chief as discovered, although others often ended up with 3rd degree burns and above.
Toward the end, when the beast calmed down it approached the chiefs calmly giving them a touch on their heads. At this time, behind the Chief's surprise, the beast took human form and lost consciousness in the Chief's arms. When this happened all the fire was completely extinguished. After capture, Sinner was handed over to the MBCC. It is also still suspected that Sinner had connections to the Underground

In the vast, dark expanse of the universe, there lies a mystery about the first stars—massive, luminous celestial bodies that lit up the cosmos in its earliest stages. These stars, known as Population III stars, are so far removed from modern astronomy’s reach that their properties remain largely unknown. Scientists have spent decades searching for a way to uncover the details of these ancient, enigmatic stars. Today, a new method is bringing them into focus, using faint signals that were emitted billions of years ago. The 21-Centimeter Signal: A Cosmic Whisper The breakthrough lies in a faint, nearly undetectable radio signal that has persisted through time: the 21-centimeter signal. This signal, emitted by hydrogen atoms shortly after the Big Bang, is a key marker from a time known as the Cosmic Dawn—the moment when the first stars began to form and light up the universe. The 21-centimeter signal is particularly valuable because, unlike visible light or X-rays, it can provide direct insights into the masses, behaviors, and distribution of the first stars. Yet, until recently, astronomers had not fully understood the ways in which this subtle signal could help reveal the early cosmos. How Scientists Are Using the 21-Centimeter Signal An international team of astronomers, led by Professor Anastasia Fialkov at the University of Cambridge’s Institute of Astronomy, has cracked a crucial aspect of this signal. Their work, published in Nature Astronomy, demonstrates that this ancient radio signal is sensitive to the properties of the first stars. Specifically, their research suggests that the signal could be used to estimate the masses of the universe’s earliest stars—Population III stars—whose light we can never directly observe. This insight is significant because it opens a new door to understanding the early universe, which was primarily composed of hydrogen and helium. As stars formed, their radiation influenced the surrounding gas, gradually changing the composition of the universe. By studying how the 21-centimeter signal has been altered by these stars, astronomers can begin to chart the transformation from a dark, uniform mass to the complex and diverse cosmos we observe today. REACH and SKA: Key Projects for Mapping the Universe’s Past The team behind these findings is also involved in two ambitious projects—REACH (Radio Experiment for the Analysis of Cosmic Hydrogen) and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). REACH, still in its early calibration phase, uses radio antennas to capture the 21-centimeter signal, while the SKA is an even larger array of antennas currently being constructed. The SKA will have the capacity to map vast regions of space and study fluctuations in cosmic radiation, providing an invaluable resource for understanding the earliest epochs of the universe. These projects are essential to the future of radio astronomy. By focusing on statistical patterns of faint signals, REACH and SKA offer a way to study the early universe in unprecedented detail. As Professor Fialkov explains, the research team’s model predicts that both REACH and SKA will allow astronomers to study the distribution, luminosity, and masses of Population III stars. This, in turn, will enable a more comprehensive understanding of the forces that shaped the cosmos at its infancy. The Role of X-ray Binaries in Shaping the 21-Centimeter Signal One of the most interesting aspects of this research is its exploration of how X-ray binaries—pairs of stars where one is a collapsed object like a black hole—impact the 21-centimeter signal. These binaries are thought to have played a significant role in the early universe, particularly by emitting high-energy radiation that affects the surrounding gas and alters the 21-centimeter signal. The research team, led by Professor Fialkov, developed a model that incorporates the effects of X-ray binaries, showing that previous studies may have underestimated their influence. This discovery adds a layer of complexity to our understanding of how the first stars shaped the universe. The combination of radiation from both normal stars and X-ray binaries has a profound impact on the signal, making it an even more powerful tool for mapping the earliest moments in cosmic history. Radio Telescopes: The Future of Cosmic Exploration The 21-centimeter signal’s potential is further amplified by the increasing power of radio telescopes. Unlike optical telescopes that capture detailed images of distant stars and galaxies, radio telescopes like REACH and SKA rely on detecting faint signals to infer the properties of cosmic phenomena. These telescopes won’t provide direct images of individual stars, but they will offer an extraordinary opportunity to study large-scale patterns in the universe’s earliest phases. As Dr. Eloy de Lera Acedo, Principal Investigator of the REACH project, notes, these radio observations are essential for understanding the mass and properties of the first stars. The team’s work is laying the groundwork for future discoveries, with the data gathered from the South African site of the Karoo radio telescope already being analyzed. Enjoyed this article? Subject: Re:ANSWERS
THIS INFORMATION COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE AND FREEDOM THE COMING "OFFICIAL" ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE ALIEN PRESENCE ON EARTH
WHY "STAR WARS", THE HUBBEL SPACE TELESCOPE, THE SUDDEN FALL OF COMMUNISM ?
WHAT IS GOING ON? Something very SINISTER is going on. Polls reveal that over 90% of the American people believe in UFO's and 95% of these people believe the government is keeping this knowledge from the public. But why? Are they afraid the people will panic if an "official" announcement were made? Hardly. Such an announcement would create interest and excitement and many questions, particularly by the churches, but not panic. Why then the continued cover-up?
There is overwhelming evidence in the past several years from "whistle-blowers"--retired military officers who have finally said, "Enough is enough! It's time the government told the people the truth!" these officers, such as Navy intelligence officer, William Cooper, Major John Lear (whose father founded the Learjet Corp.) and Air Force officer William English, to name but a few, have all discovered the truth, and at the risk of their very lives, are trying to alert YOU to the secrets behind the UFOs and the Alien Presence on this earth. These people worked on secret projects, had access to, 'classified' Top Secret documents, had seen with their own eyes 'captured' aliens, or extraterrestrial entities, UFOs and the incredible technology they brought with them.
Sightings of 'UFOs' (unidentified flying objects) have been reported throughout history, and biblical and historic references to "flaming chariots" huqe flying 'birds' and odd-looking beings predate our history by thousands of years. In the 1940s several alien spacecraft were recovered by the U.S. and other countries, along with a few dead aliens and one live one they named EBE (a name suggested by Dr. Vannever Bush and was short for Extraterrestrial Biological Entity).
1953 astronomers discovered large objects in space which were moving toward Earth. At first they believed these were asteroids, but later evidence proved the objects could only be spaceships. Project Sign and Project Plato intercepted alien radio communication and using the computer binary language, was able to arrange a landing that resulted in face-to-face contact with alien beings from another planet. Meanwhile, a race of human-looking aliens contacted the U.S. Government, warning us that the aliens orbiting the equator were hostile beings from Orion. These human-type aliens demanded we dismantle and destroy our nuclear weapons, that we were on a path of self destruction and we must stop killing each other, stop polluting the earth, stop raping the earth's natural resources and learn to live in harmony with one another. President Eisenhower rejected these demands.
Later in 1954 the race of aliens, known as Greys, from Zeta Reticuli area in space, who had been orbiting the equator, landed at Holloman Air Force Base. They stated their planet was dying and they needed quarters on earth to conduct genetic experiments that might allow their race to survive; this in exchange for certain technology. Pres. Eisenhower met with the aliens and a formal treaty was signed. The treaty stated the aliens would not interfere in our affairs and we would not interfere in theirs. We would keep their presence on earth secret; they would furnish us with advanced technology . They could abduct humans on a limited basis for the purpose of medical examination and monitoring, with the stipulation that the humans would not be harmed, would be returned to their point of abduction, that the human have no memory of the event. It was also agreed the alien bases; would be constructed underground, beneath Indian reservations in the 4 corners area of Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado. Another was to be constructed in Nevada in the area known as S4, about 7 miles south of Area 51, known as 'Dreamland.' A multi-billion dollar secret fund was organized and kept by the Military Office of the White House, supposedly to build secret underground sites for the President and staff in case of military attacks.
By secret Executive Memorandum, NSC 5410, Eisenhower re-established a permanent committee known as "Majority Twelve" (MJ-12) to oversee and conduct all covert activities with the aliens. This included FBI director J. Edgar Hoover and six leaders of the 'Council on Foreign Relations, known as the Wise Men' and later others from the Trilateral Commission. George Bush, Gordon Dean, and Brzezinski were among them.
A major finding of the commission was the aliens were using humans and animals for a source of glandular secretions, enzymes, hormonal secretions, blood and in horrible genetic experiments. The aliens explained these actions as necessary for their survival, that if their genetic structure were not improved, their race would cease to exist.
The ruling powers decided that one means of funding the alien project was to corner the illegal drug market. A young ambitious member of the Council on Foreign Relalions was approached. His name is George Bush who at the time was president and CEO of Zapata Oil Co. based in Texas. Zapata Oil was experimenting with offshore oil drilling and it was arranged that the drugs could be shipped from south America to the offshore platforms by fishing boats, then transferred to the U.S. shore by normal transportation, thus avoiding search by customs agents. The plan worked better than anyone expected, and today the CIA controls all the world's illegal drug markets. One should remember, it was George Bush who first started selling drugs to our children. The drug money was used to finance the deep underground alien bases.
Conclusions: the Bilderburgers, the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission are the SECRET GOVERNMENT and rule this nation through MJ-12 and the study group known as the Jason Society. Throughout history the aliens have manipulated and/or ruled the human race through various secret societies, religion and the occult. The CFR and the Trilateral Commisson are in complete control of the alien technology and the nation's economy. Eisenhower was the last president to know the entire overview of the alien problems. Succeeding presidents were told only what MJ-12 wanted them to know, and it was NOT the truth. MJ-12 presented each new president with a picture of a lost alien culture seeking to renew itself, build a home on this planet and shower us with gifts of technology. Each president has bought that story hook, line and sinker. Meanwhile, innocent people continue to suffer unspeakable horrors at the hands of alien and human scientists who are engaged in barbarous research that would make the Nazis pale in comparison. As if that is not enough, many people end up as food for the insatiable alien appetite for biological enzymes, hormonal secretions and blood. At least 1 in every 40 Americans have been implanted with alien devices that are used to control them if necessity calls.
By 1989 over 3 million 'Greys' are occupying these deep multi-level underground complexes. Level 7 at Dulce is called "Nightmare Hall" They have welched on their agreement on abducting humans; today over 25 million citizens have been abducted and implanted, a literal army awaiting orders to march! (Whitley Strieber has written best-selling books on his personal experience as have many others). For this reason other nations were informed. Within 5 months the communist monolith Russia was dismantled to unite with the U.S. and its technology to fight the invasion. The Hubbel Space Telescope was created to keep a watchful eye on the invasion fleet; Star Wars technology has been developed to hopefully stop them in outer space before they can get to the earth.
Today, the government is on the horns of a dilemma. Too many sources are releasing alien Information. The public could get angry at continued secrecy. So MJ-12 plans soon to make an "official" announcement, under controlled conditions, probably Area 51. Network TV will be called to meet the staged 'landing' of the aliens, these being the Grays.
They will come bearing gifts, technology that supposedly will heal cancer and AIDS, retard aging, etc. They will tell us they are the 'saviors of humanity' who have come to defend the earth against an invasion of human eating aliens called Reptoids. This story is a LIE, they already work for the Reptoids! Their plan is to unify the world into a One-World Government, a 'New World Order' with the argument that only this can defeat the invasion by Reptoids. This is a trap to enslave the world's population. Control will be accomplished through the money system, a universal currency controlled by certain international bankers, who for years have been lackeys of the aliens, who seized upon their greed and lust for wealth and power as a means to bring about their evil plan to control the earth. (This also being the scenario predicted in the Bible's 'Book of Revelation' wherein only those who accept the Mark of the Beast (the aliens being the Beast' and the 'Mark' being some sort of laser tattoo or Credit Card they will use, which will allow people to buy and sell goods). Those who do not accept this 'Mark' must live outside the money system and survive somehow on their own, through barter etc.
SO BE AWARE! ONLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THIS FAKE INVASION AND FAKE RAPTURE CAN PREVENT IT FROM HAPPENING. DEMAND THE TRUTH FROM YOUR GOVERNMENT. TELL THEM YOU KNOW ABOUT THE ALIENS AND THAT THERE ARE GOOD ALIENS AND BAD ALIENS AND THAT MJ-12 IS PROMOTING THE BAD ALIENS AND THE ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT THEY HOPE TO CONTROL.
INSIST ON THE TRUE STORY OF THE ALIEN PRESENCE ! YOUR LIFE COULD DEPEND UPON IT, AS WELL AS YOUR FREEDOMS !

WHAT IS THE 'MOST MYSTERIOUS STAR IN OUR UNIVERSE'??
Blog#370
Saturday, January 27th, 2024.
Welcome back,
KIC 8462852, also known as Boyajian’s star or Tabby’s star, exhibits large, aperiodic dips in a variety of shapes, inconsistent with an exoplanet explanation.
There has been significant interest in this star, with many suggested explanations from interstellar clouds, to a swarm of exocomets orbiting the star, to circumstellar dust, to debris from a melting exomoon, to alien megastructures.
Tumblr media
“The light curve of KIC 8462852, a.k.a Boyajian’s star, undergoes deep dips the origin of which remains unclear,” Steward Observatory astronomer Logan Pearce and his colleagues from the United States and the United Kingdom wrote in their paper.
Tumblr media
“A faint star 1.95’’ to the east was discovered in images from the Near Infrared Camera 2 (NIRC2) instrument on the Keck II telescope in 2015, but its status as a binary, and possible contribution to the observed variability, was unclear.”
In their work, the astronomers analyzed a series of Keck/NIRC2 images captured in 2014 (28 images), 2016 (13 images), and 2019 (10 images).
Tumblr media
They found that the main star, KIC 8462852A, and its companion of spectral type M2V, KIC 8462852B, are a common proper motion pair and a gravitationally bound binary system.
"Since KIC 8462852B is a bound companion, we assume that it follows a Keplerian orbit around the center of mass of the system,” they wrote.
Tumblr media
“An object on a circular, face-on orbit at the current 880 AU separation and a total system mass of 1.9 solar masses would have a velocity of 1.4 km/s and a period of 18,600 years.”
The astronomers think that it is unlikely that KIC 8462852B directly influences the light curve of the main star.
Tumblr media
“Although it has not been thought to be a likely explanation for KIC 8462852A’s light curve, it is a potential source of instability in the long-term evolution of the system, and could excite chaotic orbits of objects in the system,” they wrote in the paper.
“Efforts to explain KIC 8462852A’s dimming events should be informed by the existence of a wide stellar binary companion to the system.”

hi!!! 👋 i don’t wanna be annoying but I love ur blog and ur objectively bad takes /s
you bring up some decent points comparing jon and sansa to each other as far as stupid teenager things go. Can you elaborate a little more on Sansa’s mistakes being stupid teenager mistakes? she’s big naive and wears her rose tinted glasses and that pretty much sets the stage for her character and the growth she experiences in the series, but it’s hard for me to believe an 11-13 year old girl {i forget how old anyways she’s youngg 🍼} wouldn’t consider the weight her choices as a future queen betrothed to the heir of the iron throne would hold.
{almost hoping i become immortalized on ur blog when my anon ask becomes the gateway to ur next metaessay♥️💙💜💗💛💚}
HI OH MY GOD YOU'RE NOT ANNOYING, I LOVE YOU.
I can't believe you fuckin losers want to hear more of my objectively bad takes (stealing that one)
And I lovvvveeeee how you approached me with constructive pushback :) I wish I had more asks like you. Ya'll are allowed to disagree with me, and I hope some of you do. I'm a big fan of (constructive and purely conversational) debate! But imma be real w you. I feel like your argument doesn't hold much weight, either. Speaking as a former idealistic and very stupid 11-13 year old girl-- oh my god I could totally see myself at sansa's age and in her position making the same stupid fucking decisions. Does that make them right? absolutely not. Still fuckin stupid.
I've never been an angsty teenage boy, though, so I cannot attest to whether or not Jon is an accurate representation of cringe 15 year old amab experiences but like. having been around alot of cringe 15 year old amabs? yeah. He seems pretty normal, too.
on that note. Lemme be a li'l unhinged and intellectualize this for a min.

Teenage Dirtbags of Westeros: Jon, Sansa, and the Cost of Being Dumb
some get stabbed and some get stuck pretending to be their creepy uncle’s kid
Word count: 924 Time to read: 5 - 9 mins CW for discussions of gender as a binary, Sansa's character arc which involves grooming and Petyr Baelish is his own warning all by himself.
in the books, we can easily see a parallel between how Sansa and Jon are depicted as lame teenagers with terrible social skills and a comical lack of self-awareness (like most teenagers, of not all.) Both characters begin as naïve, idealistic teenagers thrust into new and exciting circumstances that they soon learn are far beyond their control, yet the consequences of their decisions deviate abruptly due to the difference in societal structures and therefore the disparity in expectations placed upon them. Jon, despite making reckless and shortsighted choices, is – for the most part—spared personal, long-lasting repercussions; his errors largely affect the Wall and the Wildlings rather than his own survival or sense of self. In contrast, Sansa’s mistakes carry devastating consequences for her identity and agency, with her naïve decisions rippling through the entirety of the narrative and altering the trajectory of Westeros as a whole. This discrepancy demonstrates not only the fundamentally gendered lens through which these characters’ arcs are written but also the brutal realities of power and privilege in this universe. And honestly, it’s no mistake. I think Peepaw did this intentionally.
Jon’s mistakes as a stupid emo whiny ass angsty teen often stem from his desire to balance his personal beliefs with his borderline quixotic sense of duty. His decision to trust the Wildlings, for example, ruptures his relationships with his colleagues and new forced family and eventually leads to his murder at the hands of his brothers. Jon’s death, however, is implied to be temporary and functions as a narrative tool to reinforce his role as a messianic figurehead of the series (I mean like I could write a whole fuckin thing about this alone and how the inclusion of Beric Dondarrion and the Brothers without Banners’ influence on Arya’s storyline and how Arya by herself can serve as a parallel for Jon--). Though he definitely faces challenges, the consequences of his actions are contained within the Wall and immediately adjacent—a place already isolated from the political machinations of Westeros by design. His mistakes do not permanently alter his identity or strip him of his agency. Sansa’s mistakes, on the other hand, have far-reaching consequences that compound over time, affecting not only her personal arc but the entire realm. Her choice to approach Queen Cersei and beg for the crown’s protection—a decision born of youthful idealism and trust in the chivalric ideals she’s been taught (blame ur father sweetie. Welcome to the club)—sets off a chain of events that leads to Robert Baratheon’s death, Ned Stark’s execution, and the War of the Five Kings and so on and so forth. Like the 9/11 domino effect but for Westeros. Unlike Jon, Sansa’s errors are amplified by her birth status and specifically her gender, as the stakes of her actions reverberate through the political landscape in ways she could never have foreseen.
This disparity is further illustrated through their respective “deaths.” While Jon’s death is a physical one, Sansa experiences a symbolic death when she is forced to throw away her identity at the hands of her biggest groomer (and fuckin Capital L LOSER) and become Alayne Stone, the bastard daughter of Littlefinger [crowd boos]. Sansa’s transformation is a worse fate because it robs her of her sense of self, forcing her to live a life of manipulation and abuse under the guise of her abuser’s ward. Peepaw even emphasizes this loss of self by titling her perspective chapters as "Alayne" rather than "Sansa," (I cry errytiem) reflecting her inner turmoil as she begins to think of herself as someone other than a Stark. (I mean you can argue that Sansa’s loss of identity began at the Crossing when she was robbed of Lady and you would be correct but this is my meta essay get ur own soapbox. And tag me if u do.) Jon’s (potential) resurrection allows him to return to his true self with renewed purpose, while Sansa’s erasure underscores the brutality of her circumstances and the grotesquely gendered nature of power in Westeros. Sansa’s narrative arc illustrates how the consequences of her stupid teenager mistakes are magnified not because she is less capable than Jon, but because the world she inhabits punishes women far more harshly for what this society considers to be faults. Her suffering and eventual growth reveal the oppressive structures that shape her life, while Jon’s arc—though compelling and holds significant weight narratively and I’m not trying to argue it doesn’t—remains largely insulated from such systemic inequities
The unequal treatment of Jon and Sansa’s naivety is not just a reflection of their personal arcs but of the broader structures of power and gender in Westeros. Jon is allowed to fail without the world collapsing around him because he exists on the fringes of society as a bastard and a member of the Night’s Watch. Sansa, on the other hand, is punished brutally for her mistakes because of the immense weight placed on her identity as a Stark and a daughter and her role in the political machinations of Westeros.
This discrepancy highlights the systemic inequality at play in the series: Jon is afforded the space to grow and learn from his mistakes, while Sansa is stripped of her agency, identity, and autonomy. Her suffering is not just personal—it is woven into the fabric of Westeros itself, as her mistakes become the catalysts for larger political and social upheaval.

rambly nonsense umineko spoilers below
sayo is genuinely such a powerful character for me. they embody so much of how i see my experiences, both in their gender (ESPECIALLY in confessions dear god) and in their heartbreak.
im sure this is common for queer people reading sayo's story but as a trans girl their "damaged body", their othering from the servants (shown to be entirely women); it's all just so deeply relatable to me to the point that it's insane ryukishi managed to write such a thing. the amount of genuine compassion he shows intersex experience is so so admirable to me.
their gender then seemingly becomes a product of their socialisation (very Butler): they are Shannon the servant growing up. they are Kanon escaping the confines of a fem binary. they are Beatrice as a projection of their mother forced onto them by Kinzo, but also in their own rebuking of that, becoming the master of the night. they return to Shannon trying to please the men in their life who have viewed them as a sexual object for their whole childhood - the large breasts are an almost explicit example of this ("blonde and bouncy", etc).
when it comes to love Sayo ties it so heavily to traditional gender roles, and to be honest, why wouldn't they? the setting of umineko is upper class, it's patriarchal, it takes on an attitude of "blood thicker than water". even when Sayo manages to move on from their first romantic love in Battler, George is someone who expects childbearing from them as a matter of course. they have little choice but to feel that their value as a sexual being is necessary for love. as healthy as George may be in them moving on from Battler, they can't give him what he wants. personally, it wouldn't at all surprise me if George would reject them if he found out.
all of this is encapsulated so well by the "furniture" metaphor throughout the question arcs. of course Kanon can't accept Jessica's love - in Sayo's mind, he exists as a persona to see but not to touch. he is window dressing.
ive rambled a lot already, but to get slightly more personal: Sayo's obsession with Battler is deeply deeply resonant with me. about a year and a half ago, i was engaged. there were so many promises of a life surrounding this, there was so much self-worth found just in that relationship. before it, i was a lonely shut-in boymoding trans girl. through it, i finally felt like i, and importantly my body, could be loved and could be satisfied in a relationship. that suddenly ended. i've tried to move on, i've tried to love since, but like Sayo, all i can find myself doing is waiting, praying. even when they find George as a new focus of their love, they can't feel safe with him.
as is said in episode 7... "the crime didn't take place because Battler left. it took place because he came back." even after all this time, they haven't escaped their first love. the systems of oppression they struggle under, and the position they are forced into by kinzo, and the lack of understanding from their other lovers... they fold under all this weight, and it's heartbreaking.
i just want my silly little queer to be happy.
lia out.
