I HAVE WATCHED THAT LITTLE BIT WITH ZAMIA AND STAR SO SO SO MANY TIMES. I started writing this fic before episode 109 was released (as I said in the authors note with chip being undead 😭) and I so so SO called the marriage thing.

I got the characters so good because I latched onto them like a baby duckling imprinting on its mother. Like I have never been so attached to an NPC this quickly before. PCs? Maybe with The Suckening and BITB. but not NPCs. Not even Soda/Theo (sorry buddy </3)

I couldn't stop thinking about Zamia and Star even before we met Star. When Star was only mentioned by Zamia as her partner. And I wrote a fic about them a bit after episode 105 was released (the one where the survivors were introduced).

Anyways, for characterization. Zamia seemed the type to hide her emotions. Star even mentioned it in her vows ("protecting you when you hide away in the darkest corner of our room"). She doesn't want others to see her weak. But Star is different. Star loves her and that won't change. She trusts Star so innately that she can break in front of her. And being able to touch her hair and be with her, doing mundane and domestic acts really hit her hard. She thought she would never see her again. Because no one else ever came back.

She took some time to process that Star was actually there. And with all of the fear leaving, it had to go somewhere. Zamia's love is kept to her chest, just in case something like this happened. Zamia wants to protect, as is her past duty as a knight.

And for Star, she seemed to be a lot more vocal with her love. She was a cleric, built for helping others, and that gives her a big heart. She loves a lot, and loudly.

But after everything happened, with the battle against Captain Widow and everyone nearly dying, it seemed fitting to change the way Zamia acted slightly. Let her be forward with her love. Because she loves Star with everything she has. And she needs Star to know it (even if Star does already know).

The characterization of Zamia being more optimistic in the past was really not based in anything. It just felt right. Both Gillion and Zamia are paladins, and I think they want to look to the positives of their situations. They get to protect, they get to help, and even if it's bad, they are able to do so much for those around them. But when her magic fades, and her Light is taken. That positivity died. She realized just how much that optimism didn't match with the reality of her situation. And it hit her hard. But she hid it. And hid it well. Until Star returned.

This is a situation that changes someone forever, which is why I made her ask "what if [the optimism] never comes back". Because she doesn't know! Her emotions were all over the place at that moment, so had no idea what the future held. She just knew she wanted to be with Star during it.

I could probably go on further but I think I'm rambling now 😭

(Also Zamia and Starling becoming Ami and Star felt so touching. Ami meaning friend or even lover depending on the context and Star being the light in the darkness of night. It just fit.)
