(Just a quick blurb, goes with the recently posted drawing. I will write a second part to this don't worry. I may have just retconned a couple drawings but that's ok!) @quibble-auk for the inspo!! Also those dinosaurs look so sick ok-)

T.w Dude is in pain, panic.

Comet eater was panicking. His breathing rapid and mind raw. He was being dragged. But he couldn’t move. The thing who dragged him was roaring about something, but he couldn't even try to decipher the clicks and whistles. His face rubbed and scraped on the floor as his leg was tugged painfully. Why? Why him? Why this? He sobbed in his chest trying to stop the movement but again, his tired muscles and broken ribs stopped him from getting far. He had ran so hard and for so long. But the monster had gotten him anyway hadn't it? Yanked him so hard out of his makeshift nest he had felt his hip pop. The movement stopped and he hardly got a breath, whimpers slipping from his throat. He wished he could tell them he was sorry. For whatever he had done to deserve it.

His leg landed on the ground with a wet crack, he hated to admit it but he screamed. Loud and hard and long. He choked when a heavy boot made contact with his spine. Not crushing, but enough weight to exacerbate the already bruised column. The thing was making noises again, Comet noticed past the pain. He also realized there was light past his eyelids now. Shadows danced in the warm orange light, horrible smells eating away at his nose. He forced his eyelids open. Comet slowly, painfully, surveyed the room. It was filled to the brim with brightly colored..Things? No, he blinked, groaning softly. They were, no. He froze in the terror that overtook his brain. Eyes from every direction were on him. Not that many were ever supposed to look at him. His breathing kicking up a notch, heart beating so hard it hurt. Things, like the thing pinning him. Like the ones who shot him. Like the ones who hurt him. Are going to hurt him. They were gathered all around him, horrible faces squinted in curiosity. Some made noises and some other joined in, gesturing at him. He flinched back from the movement. This was wrong. This wasn't right. More of them made the same noise baring their teeth. Above him the weight shifted, getting off slightly. Comet didn’t dare move. He allowed his eyes to shift around the crowd in short bursts as his panic mounted. His brain screamed danger at every flick of his eyes. It begged him to fly. To get away. They were going to hurt him. He needed to run. But his legs wouldn't move. His cells all cried out in utter exhaustion. Barely able to breath past his panic he could make out who now watched intently, as the awful creature behind him had started to circle him. Making loud clicks and whistles he made grand gestures, eyes glowing and glancing down at Comet like he was his next meal.

Comet felt the danger rise, he felt it in his flesh. THe screams in his mind hitting a crescendo. He could only twitch before the boot hit his side, sending him sliding against the floor in an agonizing skid. Comet’s mind reeled as he tried to stabilize himself. His eyes  lost their grip as the room seemed to grow so much longer, stretching like a broken vein.

 Laying in a heap on the ground slick with his own blood, the scent choked him. If his brain could hit a higher gear it did. He couldn't breathe. The eyes hurt his skin as the things continued to make those nightmarish noises. In a wave it was too much. Too loud. It hurt. In stomping steps the first creature walked back to him, making those loud roars. His brain was so overwhelmed, Comet could only seek escape in the crowd. Darting and blurry with unshed tears he searched for something. Anything.

Everything just hurt so much.

This whole planet hurts.

He just wanted something that didn't.

For one moment just make it stop.

Comet’s eyes met one of the things.

Bright violet and sharp they met his. He watched as the thing’s grey face seemed to bunch up. Stiffen and grow darker. It’s jaw clenched.

Comet only sobbed again silently begging the red thing for help, to make the pain stop, for only a second. Those eyes softened for a moment.

 Then he was snatched up. A cry tore from his already aching throat as he found himself being dragged once more. The panic came back full force as he screamed. He searched for the red thing frantically, but he was gone. Instead a horrible blob of color and light began to twist in his vision. He felt like he was falling. Bright colors overtaken by the red and yellow of the things closest to him. They almost looked like sunsets.

He missed his sunsets. 

He wanted to go home.

I've been your follower for months now but I'm still in awe with all of your beautiful and jaw dropping artwork!

Little question: how can someone as handsome as Avaric Gaunt sire a man like Marvolo? Like, I get Marvolo still being "handsome" during his youth but he aged like a block of room temperature butter that's so close to its expiration date. In your last art of baby Ominis and Avaric, I'm sure he was around... in his thirties in that picture, correct me if I'm wrong.

So, what went wrong with Marvolo? 😭 And did Ominis inherit Avaric's "youthful" genes, at least?

Good friggin' question because honestly, no idea xD Thankfully we never got to see Marvolo or their father in canon - heck, we don't even know if Marvolo is Ominis' brother - so anyone can headcanon whatever they like, really, which is super neat! When it comes to Marvolo, I do like to think he probably aged like milk, perhaps because of dark magic, or drinking, or the pipe, or drugs, or genetics... Who knows really! He could've been equally handsome as Ominis when young, or maybe not. Genetics are kinda fun like that hahaha. And perhaps Ominis aged better than him (or died young so we never got to find out mwahahahha). It's really fun to speculate all these things. Love brainrotting this stuff! Now, the reason why we hc Avaric as this pretty boy is because we wanted to combine the aspect of someone being beautiful but also acting like the worst possible human being. It's a common trope for sure but we wanted to explore it from a standpoint of shipping him with Phineas, who we know to canonically be quite hung on appearance and "style" :D We wanted Avaric's looks to be sort of a lure when in actuality he's completely rotten inside. It's quite interesting to explore these characteristics, especially since most of us who were brainstorming this know approximately what abusers are like and how they operate, and some of us have been in pretty horrible relationships. It appears that sometimes, being charming and good looking is something that keeps the victim coming back for more. I suppose that was the reasoning for me at least behind his looks when I first drew him. Plus men with long hair, oh lord jesus save me, it is the best thing to draw. But yeah, his appearance is mostly for story reasons and poetics. No clue what he actually looks like or whether we will ever find out :D And hmm, I suppose Avaric in that art is about 30, more or less? Ominis would be maybe around 4-5. I'd say Marvolo is in his first year of Hogwarts at this point. Math is not my strongest suit so somebody who I brainrotted the ages with has got to check that for me xD I love to hc that Avaric started having kids when he was still young and married at 19 probably, out of pettiness that Phineas actually went through his engagement with Ursula. Maybe the secret to his youth was that he never took care of his children or went near them much :'DDD

Onto the plot ↓

“ Maybe ? ”

Muse A and muse B grew up together. Not quite childhood friends, since they were both part of different social groups, growing up. But they did, technically, grow up together.

Same schools, and all that fun stuff.

Muse A was part of your stereotypical popular group, with all the mean girls and rude boys. The kings and queens of the school, from elementary to highschool.

“ No . ”

Muse B was part of the deemed ‘weird kids.’ Y'know.. those ones. The ones that no one's really friends with, because of a rumor or three that latched onto them. Destroyed their social lives, just about, all because somebody thought it'd be funny. School is cruel.

“ maybe . . ? ”

The thing is, B and A were, at some point, friends. It's a very open term when used here, but they were friends to some extent. For about three years, before social groups split between them. One moved on, made new friends, and changed. The other one, decidedly, did not.

“ I'm sorry . . ”

It's rejection after rejection. Silly things, that started in middle school, that lasted all the way up into their semi-separate adult lives. A saw it as a strange coincidence — how he kept finding B around each corner, conveniently. Or how he'd somehow end up in a situation where B is trying to ask him out, despite them having practically zero things in common.

“ Maybe ? ? ”

B doesn't take this kindly. Is he being led on? What is he doing wrong?

“ I got a date . . . ”

One thing turns to another, and before you know it, drastic measures are being taken. Muse B saw muse A going on a date, and he just couldn't have it. What does this lady have that he doesn't?? What makes her, so special??

valentines day alphabet  ( no longer accepting )

literally no one asked for this, i’m just doing this one to treat myself

A   :   AFFECTION.   how does your muse show affection?

He’s such an affectionate guy that it’s hard to pin down one way. Skip is physically affectionate with the people he cares for, giving it out almost absently; he’s generous with his time and with his money, putting effort into finding gifts for people he cares for. His primary love language, though, has got to be gestures. Skip loves being able to show people how much he cares. He’ll run errands, do favors, rearrange his schedule just so his friend doesn’t have to go to a party alone...  what really sets Skip apart from the crowd is the sheer lengths he’s willing to go to for other people.

B   :   BOUQUET.   does your muse like flowers? which ones are their favourite?

He doesn’t know the first thing about flowers, but damn him if he’s not going to try. Skip has a fixed idea of what “the perfect boyfriend” looks like, and chases that ideal constantly. It’s romantic to show up to your date’s house with flowers, so of course he’s going to do that! Except he got them for $5 at the grocery store, they’re bright purple and leaking dye everywhere, now it’s all over his suit, damn it  ----   he puts in the effort. That’s what counts.

C   :   CHOCOLATE.   does your muse like chocolate? which one is their favourite?

Like...  he’s not obsessive about it, but would he tackle his buddies for a pack of M&Ms? Absolutely. Without hesitation. Eating chocolate is great, but all the fun lies in obtaining it.

D   :   DATE.   what is your muse’s ideal date? where / who with / etc?

It needs to be something fun. Skip...  gets bored easily, and on dates he must keep himself entertained. He’d love to go out dancing, or to do something fun  ---  in the modern era, he’d love laser tag and carnival dates, just because of the raucous atmosphere. Skip can have a good time with pretty much anyone, but he loves doing fun things with his partner the most.

E   :   EMBRACE.   does your muse like hugs? what are their hugs like?

He’s such a great hugger. Skip gives big brother hugs  ---  the kind that seem to wrap you up, like they’re determined to protect you from the world, fierce and fond all at once. He pulls someone in close, pressing his chin against their head or shoulder, and rubs their back until they settle down. His hugs can be enthusiastic when the mood calls for it, but also really, really tender. 

F   :   FLIRT.   is your muse good at flirting? how do they flirt?

He’s such a friendly flirt. Which isn’t to say he’s bad, but, like...  half the time you can’t tell if he’s actually flirting or just being nice. He doesn’t have a lot of game, but Skip’s got the personality to make up for it. He’s just charming. A well-delivered pick-up line can make anybody laugh, whether it’s good or not. That’s his go-to move when flirting  ---  get someone laughing, start up a conversation, and get a feel of who they are from there.

G   :   GIFT.   is your muse good at gift - giving or do they struggle to get it right?

He’s very good at getting gifts for the people closest to him; people always drop hints, and he’s learned how to pick him up. If his sister wants a new makeup kit, he’ll get it for her; if his mother’s been needing new music to play, he’ll buy her a record. Skip likes giving gifts, regardless of the occasion...  but for casual friends, on birthdays and the like, he’s prone to giving gag gifts. If he can’t be certain it’s something they’ll love, he’d at least like it to be something they’ll laugh at.

H   :   HEART.   is your muse quick or slow to give their heart away?

Quicker than he means to be. Skip’s never been good at guarding his heart; he lets people in too easily, and is always quick to see the best in others. Yeah, he’s been stung by people he cared about before, so he should really know better...  but he’d rather have a hundred friends than five enemies. When he feels himself falling in love, he falls fast.

I    :   I LOVE YOU.   does your muse find ‘i love you’ easy or hard to say?

Honestly, it’s not something he gives much thought to. Once he’s fallen in love, it’s the easiest thing to say in the world. Yes, he loves them! Yes, he wants the world to know it! He’ll tell his friends. He’ll tell his grandma. He’ll tell the old guy at the convenience store who smells like socks. He’s in love with the most amazing person in the world! (He talks about his partner so much that his friends half-feel like they’re dating them too.) It’s just as easy for Skip to say it to their face as it is to say it behind the back. He says it so often that his partner becomes desensitized to it after a while...  but it sure is nice to hear.

J   :   JEALOUSY.   does your muse get jealous in a relationship?

He’s actually really decent about jealousy. While he’ll get protective if he sees his little sister talking to a man, he isn’t weird when it comes to his own relationships. So long as he trusts the guy, he doesn’t think they’d move in on his partner; and, of course, he trusts his partner to the moon and back.  If an interaction seems too friendly, he’ll keep an eye on it, but he’d never dream of snooping or interrogating his partner over it.

K   :   KISS.   is your muse a good kisser? why / why not?

Skip is a very gentle kisser. He’s careful in his actions, in the tender movements of lips against lips, because he’s so conscientious of his partner; any sign that they’re not enjoying it, and he’ll lose his nerve. It’s not that he lacks confidence, but Skip needs encouragement from his partner, egging him on and fueling into his passion; with it, he burns a steady flame. He’s playful with his kisses, making sure his partner isn’t holding onto any anxiety. Intimate moments like this, in Skip’s mind, should be fun, not overwhelming. He loves to trail kisses along his partner’s jaw and neck, murmuring praise between each breath as his hands explore their body as much as he’s allowed to.

L   :   LOVE.   who does your muse love?

Skip feels a very intense bond with his family. He and his siblings couldn’t be closer, and he’s felt responsible for his mother since he was a kid; she’s always looked after him, but he also looks after her. Skip also adores his friends more than it’s possible to say  ---  and the sheer amount of friends he has speaks to how much love he’s got to give.

M   :   MOONLIGHT.   is morning or night a more romantic setting?

He’s more in-the-mood at night, because Skip and mornings don’t really get along. Anytime before 8am, he’s just going through the motions of existing. His partner could tie him to the bed and shower him with rose petals, and he’d have trouble remembering it come afternoon. (He might fall asleep in the middle of the show.) Nights are a way better time for romance.

N   :   NAUGHTY.   what is your muse like in bed?

Skip’s got an adventurous streak. There’s not much he’s afraid to try once  ---  that includes positions, places, and kinks. While he doesn’t have a depth of experience behind him, he’s got a keen sense of movement  ---  the way his partner’s body shifts against his own, the way he grinds against them, the way their chest heaves and their limbs slide under his palms...   sensation is a big thing for him, and he can’t help noting each one during the act. They taste sweet, and smell like summer rainstorms, and when they moan his name it sounds like a prayer...  honestly, he gets riled up on the sensations alone. He’s an energetic partner, but will match his pace to suit his companion’s. While he can’t help being loud, he’s love a partner who could match him, or at least be a little verbal in bed  (again, he needs encouragement).  He’s a pretty firm switch, but is thrilled when his partner takes control. Getting a little rough drives him wild.

O   :   ODE.   does your muse have a way with words?

Well, he isn’t Shakespeare in love. He tries his best. Skip knows better than to write love poetry, and he’s got no talent with a pen, but...  he’s achingly sincere with his words. When he tells someone he loves them, there’s not a hint of artifice  ---  he just means it, with every cell in his body, and the truth radiates through his words.

P   :   PARTNER.   what does your muse look for in a partner? looks / personality?

Skip needs someone he can connect to. Someone warm, emotional, who someone with understanding and empathy. He’s drawn to...  very bright people. He’s definitely want someone with a good sense of humor; he’d never be happy in a relationship with someone he couldn’t laugh with. Having fun, going on adventures, being a little stupid at times...  these are all things Skip values in a relationship, and his partner would have to be able to roll with that. He’d probably love an artist, someone creative, who has passions and isn’t afraid to talk about them. Somebody who can keep up a conversation  ---  communication is a huge thing for him in relationships, so he’d need a partner open to doing that. Someone who values family highly, with a deep capacity for love and a firm sense of self. And, of course, they have to have a great laugh.

Q   :   QUESTION.   would your muse ask the big question or expect their partner to?

He’d absolutely ask the question  ---   the real question is, how. Knowing Skip, he’s not going to settle for something conventional. Dinner-date proposals are played out, and he doesn’t want to put his partner on the spot with something too public. He might enlist his best friends to help plan, just to have people to brainstorm with; in the meantime, Skip would sow his seeds. He’s not a huge planner, and has all the subtlety of a drunk duck, so if he makes a plan, his partner will be able to tell something’s up. He finally concocts some wild plan with Penkala and Malarkey, springing it on his partner last minute...  and once they’ve finished doing a scavenger hunt or chasing squirrels in the park with messages around their necks, whatever the boys have come up with, he’ll drop to one knee with a look of extreme hope on his face. “I’ve wanted to ask this for a long time  ---  hell, probably since the minute I met you  ---  but now just feels right. Do you...  feel the same way?”

R   :   ROMANCE.   is your muse a romantic or a cynic?

He’s got a very strong romantic side that really only comes out once he’s “in love” with someone. Like...  he’s not always successful, but he’s very creative about it, and very enthusiastic. Yes, he did knock over the candles and accidentally set the food on fire, but wasn’t a romantic dinner a great idea? He likes being romantic, because doing things like that, putting on a show, feels like giving to his partner.

S   :   SWEETHEART.   did your muse have a childhood sweetheart?

He definitely had a few girls in the neighborhood with crushes on him, cause Skip was an absolute sunbeam as a kid...  but his true loves were both at home. Skip’s mom and his little sister both got the lion’s share of his attention growing up; he loved them both so much that romance never crossed his mind.  (That changed when he got to high school don’t worry, but it was fun while it lasted.)

T   :   TRUE LOVE.   does your muse believe in true love?

Sure he does. Okay, it’s not for everyone  ---  his parents sure didn’t have it, and he learned the rough way that high school romances are usually too flighty to be called love  ---  but it’s a thing, no doubt. It’s real for the people who want it, and who’re lucky enough to find it. That’s gonna be him...  one day, he’ll fall in love too.

U   :   UNREQUITED.   has your muse had their heart broken?

He had a few nasty breakups in high school. They never knocked him out for long, but definitely hurt, and he still carries the scars from them. Let’s just say, the words “we need to talk” set off some Kill Bill sirens in his head.

V   :   VALENTINE.   how does your muse feel about valentine’s day?

He gets weirdly enthusiastic about it. For Skip, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to impress. He’s always got plans  ---  as a kid, he made a point of being both his mom and his little sister’s Valentine every year. As he got older, he never lost the habit of double-Valentining. Now, he usually goes on double-dates with his sister. Does his V-day date really want to be hanging out with Ruth and her boyfriend of the week while Skip argues with the maître d' about dinner reservations he absolutely didn’t book last minute? Probably not, but he didn’t consider doing it any other way. Skip always wants to give his partner a good time, but he’s usually...  just a bit too much on Valentine’s Day. He’d be better off relaxing and just letting his partner plan something.

W  :   WEDDING.   would your muse get married? why / why not?

Absolutely! He doesn’t have to think about that one. Skip’s got a ring picked out in his head and is ready to walk down the aisle by, maybe...  the sixth-month mark? It’s not that he moves fast, he’s just very confident in his own heart. When he knows, he’s sure. Getting married has always been something he wants  ---   not having grown up with a stable family unit, he craves his own little slice of domestic bliss  ---  and as long as it’s to the right person, he’s ready to go.

X   :   XOXO.   does your muse use / like pet names?

With extreme glee. He loves throwing out goofy ones, just to see how his partner reacts, and will lay it on thick in front of their friends just to make people groan...  but in private, he’s fond of “baby”, “doll”, “sweetie”, and the very cheesy “lovebug”, which earns him well-deserves eyerolls.

Y   :   YOURS.   does your muse get protective easily?

Very. Skip doesn’t seem like a serious guy at first glance  ---  but he’s got an intensely protective side, cultivated from looking after his family since he was a little kid. He’ll lay it all on the line for the people he loves. No one messes with them. No one hurts them. Skip will take care of it, and he’s not afraid to get physical to do it. His go-to, of course, will always be to try and make nice first, see if a little friendliness can diffuse a tense situation...  but if someone lays hands on his loved one, all bets are off. No one would take Skip for a fighter until he throws that first punch.

Z   :   ZZZ.   how many people has your muse slept with?

Oh no, his Mama raised him right  ---   these lips don’t kiss and tell! (That’s a lie. He spent a full hour talking Malarkey’s ear off about an amazing kiss he had on a date once, until Malarkey wanted to smother him.) Honestly...  not many. He’s always been a popular guy, but that doesn’t automatically translate into “people want to take him to bed”. Skip’s been with three people. He’s not the type for sleeping around  ---   he takes sex personally, more than he really means to.

OHHH mannnnNNNNN i love this issue SO MUCH. what a good fun emotional rollercoaster wrap-up to mtmte s1. god. 

like, this issue has it all - humor, drama, crippling sadness, intrigue, worldbuilding...it’s so excellent 

and getting to see rewind again hurts so bad but also I love him

ok quick mtmte s1 retrospective...god s1 is so fucking good. I'm gonna have to read more to say which chunk of mtmte I liked best but s1 is so fucking excellent that it might be my favorite. though its hard to pick bc there's so much good stuff later on too...whatever, the point is s1 is so so good

the plotlines and characters are fucking stellar. like I cant even believe how well Everything works, its very impressive. I cant really think of anything major that made me go ‘yeah could've done without that plotline/character’

I love how dedicated jro is to connecting everything. I've mentioned it before but basically every single moment in the series has payoff - what you initially think is just a funny moment, or a fluffy character establishment bit, ends up ALSO being an important plot point later, in some way

an example would be here w/rung and his alt mode - it just seems like a fun little B-plot for this issue, and seems to pretty neatly conclude with the reveal that rung was eventually classified as an ‘ornament’ (lmao)...but we later on get to see a lot more about this, both here and in the functionist universe 

and like, stuff like tailgate’s autobot lessons w/magnus - at first that can be seen as purely character establishment stuff, showing that magnus is a strict rule-lover and tg is a loveable try-hard good boy - but that becomes plot relevant in remain in light, with tailgate saving the day due to his knowledge of the autobot code (and its also character relevant, with magnus’s arc in remain in light). 

and I know this is like. a normal regular thing in writing, but I'm just very impressed about how cleanly jro pulls it off, and how many things he’s juggling at once, especially in early mtmte - it’s very ambitious!

and we gotta remember, this is a comic book. I've read a lot of comic books, and the quality is all over the place. a lot of writers bite off more than they can chew, and the story ends up kinda scattered as a result. 

another thing I see a lot in franchise writing like this is a lack of strong early character establishing due to the author assuming the readers are at least somewhat familiar with the characters already - which can be totally fair depending on where it is in the continuity, but other times it can come off as lazy

in mtmte, the cast is extremely well fleshed out, and not only that, the cast itself is unique in that there are a lot of relative unknowns (franchise-wise) - which I think was an absolutely brilliant move, because then jro was able to essentially create The Definitive Version of these characters - characters like swerve, brainstorm, chromedome, rewind, tailgate...mtmte is their baseline characterization, because they haven't really appeared in much else

this also allows for deviation from the franchise norms - again, a comic book classic is good writing being stifled by a need to stick to a certain status quo regard the characters, the world, the powers, relationships, etc

(I've mostly read DC comics, and some marvel, so I'm thinking superheroes w/all these comic comparisons)

so mtmte had a good recipe for genuine creativity in that the characters were relative unknowns, the plot was basically ‘space road trip,’ the status quo of ‘autobot vs decepticon war’ had been demolished throughout the entire franchise...so jro was able to take all that and run, and it turned out so fantastic

and luckily it isn't over yet! so many comics suffer from premature cancellation...and sadly mtmte/ll isn't exempt from this, as we’ll see later, but I've seen some awful ones, where comics are forced to wrap up in like 2 issues while in the middle of an arc. yikes. 

but another comic staple...one of my least favorite things about comics books in general...something that was basically responsible for driving me away from comics after reading a bunch...the dreaded crossover event

yep, even mtmte isn't immune to this unfortunate plague on the comic industry. crossover events are the absolute worst, and I'm saying this as somebody who adores crossovers (in concept more than execution usually). they SHOULD be my favorite, but unfortunately they p much always completely suck

they're essentially a ploy to get you to read the other ongoing titles, but they usually only serve to bog down whatever story you're reading to the point where you don't even wanna read that one anymore, let alone read all the other ongoings. at least, that’s been my experience 

it doesn't help that reading orders tend to be hard to find/keep track of, and that you need to go read the other series to know what's going on. I just hate it, like, I came here to read THIS series, I don't want a bunch of other series showing up too - even if I was reading two series, I wouldn't want them crossed over, because they're separate stories! augh!

I'm totally losing my focus here but my point is...crossover events suck, and mtmte unfortunately is involved in one. I have not read dark cybertron, and I'm not about to. I've heard nothing but bad things so I have no desire to inflict that upon myself

- So we’re here now for Drag Rhodey Facts. This will be a broad conceptual post. If you wish for me to elaborate further on any point I make in this post or made in the other Drag Rhodey ask, you know where to find me.

- We’ve established that his stage name is Isla Rhodelia. I do not accept constructive criticism at this time. Yes, I hate him, and yes, he’s a meme, and yes, he’s a fucking Rhode Island headass. We know all of this. I feel like he doesn’t come up with this name himself; it’s maybe Quinn who suggests it, as a half joke, but Rhodey latches onto it immediately. Thus: he is Isla.

- His style, once they nail it down through some trial and error, is sort of grungy. He has a couple of wigs, and most of them are dyed hair colors (I think his favorite one is, like, indigo). His eye makeup is always pretty bright, almost on the neon side?

- And his outfits are, like.... leather jackets, and tight pants, and sparkly things, but in mostly dark colors. It’s like he’s the lead singer of an alt band that sings about teenage rebellion. So in other words, Paramore.

- Quinn gets so much joy out of putting together his outfits. He’ll just sit in his bed in his room sewing sequins onto a bra top, and he has the time of his life. He also lives for choreographing his routines. Because you bet your ass he does that. He low-key rules with an iron fist because he takes it upon himself to be sure Rhodey has his shit together (at least in drag terms, otherwise he’s a lost cause) at all times.

- Rhodey picks the music, and Quinn puts together choreography. He does it out during idle time with Nando sometimes, just to brainstorm, and the sight of Quinn going through the dancing is just far too much for poor Nando. He’s too gay to function.

Rhodey, jumping over a table: Q!!!!!!! Keep your voice down, bro!!!!!! I’m undercover!!!!!!!

- Why is Rhodey undercover? Ha, okay, this is where we spill a little angst in our fun drag life imaginings. Rhodey starts this his sophomore year, and Whiskey is captain. I have this feeling that Whiskey still hasn’t fully accepted himself even by the time he’s a senior, and therefore Whiskey feels... kind of weird around Rhodey. The same way he felt weird around Bitty. Because Rhodey is unapologetic and unhesitating in terms of being himself, and Whiskey... isn’t there yet. He’s not sure if he’ll ever get there.

- So on a basic level, Rhodey is kind of scared of Whiskey’s standoffishness. Which isn’t like him, because he doesn’t get scared of people super often. He’s basically just terrified of the thought of Whiskey (and his other non-queer teammates) finding out that he’s doing this, because he feels like it’s going to get him in trouble on the team somehow.

- And yes, I know that this is Samwell Hockey, and that they have each other’s backs, and that the team as I write it in the CCU is well acquainted with having queer members and supporting that, but doing drag is significantly more outlandish than just having a same-sex partner or even participating in pride events. And it’s still college hockey. It’s still hockey.

- And Rhodey, as an NCAA athlete, does not like the thought of somebody finding out who could out him as Ben Shaley, Samwell University goalie, doing drag on the weekends. He knows the implications, off ice and on it, that would come with that being public knowledge.

- Therefore....... undercover.

- This creates the most hilarious thought of the crickets plus Quinn all crammed into Quinn’s room pregaming and getting ready to go out clubbing. Quinn does Rhodey’s makeup. Let me take you all on the journey that is that experience.

Quinn: (Minding his business and doing Rhodey’s mascara. He has Rhodey in a chair and he’s sort of bent over him. Because he’s doing his makeup, this requires him getting kind of close to Rhodey’s face.)

Rhodey: (Because he is an asshole.) Q, there’s so much tension between us right now.

Quinn: (Snorts.)

Nando: No, there is not.

Rhodey: Careful, Nan. I’m gonna steal your man. ;)))))

Quinn: Fucking sit still, Benjamin!

Rhodey: (Completely freezes because he fears for his life.)

Quinn: I will stab you with this mascara brush.

- And then like this.

Quinn: (Putting eyeliner on Nando because he has a hunch it’ll look very pretty and wants to test it out. He’s sitting in Nando’s lap to do it, and he has his legs around his waist.)

Rhodey: (From the other side of the room. Mid-getting dressed.) If you two start making out right now, I refuse to go out with y’all tonight.

Quinn: (Gives Rhodey a death glare, and then turns back to Nando all soft.) Ben, quit shit-talking and finish tucking.

Rhodey: (Pikachu gasp.)

Touille: (Falls off his chair laughing.)

- I cannot get the image out of my head of this slow-mo shot of all four of them walking in the parking lot to get to the club. Because it’s important to me that you know this, here’s what they wear.

Rhodey: is in drag.

Touille: Band shirts with blazers over them, and jeans, and sunglasses. He looks like some kind of grungy bouncer and definitely gets mistaken for Rhodey’s date.

Quinn: A mesh shirt he stole from the Chicago wardrobe closet when he did gender-bent Cell Block Tango and sent Nando into gay panic and some kind of tight pants, with sneakers, and Nando just..... can’t handle it at all.

Nando: Crop tops because, once he gradually gets out of his awful body image rut, Nando is a crop top king. (Quinn lives for it. Boyfriend tummy = free real estate.) And also, like, those pants that cuff at the bottom. I have no idea what the technical term for that is.

- Whatever. Anyway. Those are clubbing outfits. Rhodey kicks ass onstage and also he lives for it??? Quinn gives him a little pep talk because he’s kind of nervous before his first show (imagine that, Ben Shaley nervous), and it’s unbelievably wholesome.

- Touille regularly tells him he looks pretty and it goes straight to his gay head.

- I’m going on and on now, so I’ll cap it here, but, I will talk about this as much as you guys want me to.

BACKGROUND

jason was born and raised in seattle, washington with his parents, who could barely afford to make ends meet, and his older brother, cameron. 

growing up, jason always had issues with his health. he was always weak, unable to do things for a long period of time ( especially anything too active ) before having shortness of breath. for a long time, they doctors came up short with a diagnosis and assuming he was asthmatic. the inhaler helped him for a little while there, but again, anything too strenuous and he couldn’t breathe. 

after a few years, he only got worse        soon that shortness of breath had chest pains and fainting accompanying it. this made it hard for him to do much, he was bedridden during most of his teenage years and spent a lot of time in hospitals, traveling to see different doctors and specialists that could help him and his family understand what was going on in his body. 

he was absolutely miserable for such a long period of time. always being left out of things, and unable to do any type of fun activities without risking losing his breath and having an “asthma attack”. he just felt really alone. of course, he had his friends, but he felt that he was always holding them back from doing what they wanted to do because he was physically incapable of handling most situations that kids and teenagers face. 

by the time he was 16, he was finally properly diagnosed with HCM ( hypertrophic cardiomyopathy )  this is a condition where it the heart muscle becomes thick, which makes it hard for the heart to pump blood normally.

he ended up moving at 18 to springhill because his cardiologist is close by and it was easier on them financially to just move closer. frequent flights back and forth wasn’t good financially, nor on him. 

once he finally got some news about his health he kinda started looking up and feeling better emotionally. more positivity and light came from him and his close family and friends were able to notice that. and with certain treatment he was able to do little things he couldn’t before. 

as for his family, their financial situation only got worse with the move and the hospital payments. so, his elder brother ended up taking up two jobs to help their parents out with some rent issues. and shortly after, so did jason. nothing too strenuous or big, but he was getting by on his own and he enjoyed it. he no longer felt like he had to be babied ( of course, he still is )  and was finally becoming his own person by himself. 

problems at home were minimal, and for the most part, he has a really supportive and loving family, their only issues stem from money. but with all four of them working jobs, they’re managing it. 

him and his brother butt heads constantly. they’re pretty much always arguing about something, because both of them have really strong opinions and will not go without having the last word. loving brothers, but always, always fighting about stupid shit. 

PERSONALITY

jason is really talkative and he loves engaging in conversations with just about anybody       he’s really friendly.

he’s always trying to get up to dumb shit that probably isn’t good for his well being ( or his parents approval ). so, like, he’s always down to do anything he hasn’t tried before. 

v v open minded about a lot of things and is definitely a person to go to when you just need someone to listen. he gives shit advice, so don’t expect much other than a pat on the back and a solid “it’ll be okay” because other than that, in most dramatic situations, he has no idea what to do. 

had too high of a head on his shoulders. his confidence is a little too much, and he hardly gets embarrassed by his narcissistic attitude and view of himself. definitely pretty vain. 

irresponsible as hell. that’s all i can really say on that matter. he always doing the opposite of what he’s told to do. 

loves to argue?? half the time he can be wrong about what he’s arguing about, but he’ll still keeping going on about it. doesn’t really matter to him. 

too, too playful. 

says really dumb shit, not sure if half the time he realizes what he’s saying is dumb. 

most of the time he’s more of a go with the flow type of person. he doesn’t stick to plans. 

so sensitive. it’s really easily to piss him off or upset him with just about anything and turns him into a blubbering mess because he doesn’t really know how to form words or express himself in the right way when he’s super super angry. 

MISCELLANEOUS

because of his condition, he still has a hard time doing most activities. but, he doesn’t tell anybody except his employers about his health because he doesn’t want sympathy, nor any special help. so most of the time, he does come off as lazy and he’s honestly pretty fine with that. only people close to him really know about what’s going on with him. 

complications always arise suddenly so there will be times where he’s not acting like his normal self, or just keeping to himself. 

uhhh, he doesn’t have a high, or long, life expectancy ?? so he’s really just living life to the fullest with the time he’s got. 

he works at the scoop! as just a salesperson. rings people up and gives people their order. a really simple job, but he likes it there a lot. probably wouldn’t trade that job for anything right now. 

still lives with his parents?? he’s 22 and still very much a mommas boy. probably wont leave her side, or his fathers, until they kick him out. 

uhh pansexual if that matters ?? he doesn’t really care much about that, he just looks for if he vibes well with a person or not.

if you say ‘bet’ to him about anything, he will always, always do it.

Hi guys !! I’m HYLIA , and I was here twice - both very briefly , one when I still identified under the name Robin and played a daughter of the Enchantress named Trixie , and another more recently where I wrote a version of this character as the daughter of the Huntsman , but had to leave due to unexpected mental health concerns - I won’t go into it , but it was a really awful time and I’d like to apologize for dipping so quickly. But I’m here to stay for now !! I’m going to try and make this quick since I have work in about an hour - but no promises , since I tend to ramble , so read on and don’t forget to like for a plotting dm once you’ve finished all the way through !!

BACKSTORY & BASICS.

So Quivi is adopted - the only child of Kida & Milo , a baby when he first discovered Atlantis. Her biological parents died shortly after the events of the first movie , and Kida & Milo , unable to conceive a child of their own , didn’t hesitate to take her in.

So she was raised with love & care & all the traditional values taught to the children of Atlantis , while being taught by her father the U.S.’s influence.

So yes this makes Quivi multilingual like her mother but also she can read Atlantean like her father ( since if you remember in the first movie , none of the Atlanteans can read their own language , while Milo can. )

It’s also been a REALLY long time since I’ve watched either of the movies.

She also knows Morse Code - taught to her by Packard , since I’d think Packard would know it since she was the radio operator - and ASL - which I’ll explain why momentarily.

It’s also really important to note that Quivi is selectively mute. She doesn’t speak unless in situations or around people where she’s comfortable doing so , and primarily uses nonverbal methods of communication such as writing , sign , or Morse. I will always specify in rp which method she uses.

But !! Back to the backstory , she heard of her father’s adventures ( since again in Milo’s Return there’s like... a whole sequence in where they go on crazy adventures and stuff and I haven’t seen that movie in a longer time than I’ve seen the first one but yeah ) and wanted to experience them for herself. So she went on a few !! But the most notable one was when she was sixteen , venturing with her father and his comrades into the Siberian tundra.

This was fine , until a turn for the worse rolled around when they discovered Quivi was missing.

It was a month before they found her again ; wandering around and surviving with the training of an Atlantean warrior and hunter she was given as a child. But she was extremely exhausted from her time of surviving alone - although , she did like the the cold a little more than expected.

Quivi’s aesthetic has always been like. Snow and mountains. So I had to find a way to wriggle that in SKSKSKSKSKSKSK 

But also during the period of time she was in the tundra , she encountered Siberian hunters that she didn’t get along with and was on the run from them since she was an Atlantean and they hadn’t seen an Atlantean before so. Yeah. They were on her tail.

But yeah !! Tired from her journeys but a little scarred from survival , she went back to Atlantis and sort of . . . cut herself off from everyone else ?? She focused on her training , didn’t really want to go back into the outside world , and was paranoid she’d be hunted again like in Siberia.

UNTIL . . . coming to Auradon.

Buuuut the thing is , because she’s so . . . outwardly stoic and quiet and closes herself off , she’s a little intimidating to the people who don’t know her. So she SEEMED scary to everyone else in Atlantis , but in truth she’s actually a gentle giant.

A little hesitant to tell people about her experience in Siberia since it was again a little too much for her at her age. She’s surprised she even survived.

And for that she has this big cloak ( think Jon Snow ) that’s kind of like... her security blanket. Her comfort.

Drift

Drift has been preparing for this moment for a long time. He liked you for a while now. You were sweet, kind, intelligent and a good friend to him, always willing to try yoga and meditations with him. How could he not fall for you? It was almost impossible! So, with some preparations, he was ready to make a confession. 

The ship stopped on a small planet. There was not much on it, very short trees and a lot of grassy hills. But, what was the best thing on it, there was an atmosphere, that was suitable for humans. Drift took you on a walk. He already knew that the sunset on this planet will begin in a few hours, and it will be as beautiful as it was on Earth.

He was calm, actually. Pretty calm for a bot, who was going to confess his feelings to his s/o.  You too were relaxed: Drift often offered you to walk with him, the conversation went smoothly and quietly, as always. There was nothing suspicious about the whole situation. 

When sunset started, you two sat on a hill and stopped talking for a moment to enjoy the view. However, Drift decided that it was the time. 

“Y/N?”

“Yeah?”

“I’ve brought you here for a reason, you know.”

“Oh? What reason?”

“I wanted to confess. To be… honest with you.” You didn’t even saw what was coming. “Y/N, I like you. Very much, to be honest. I think that it’s not even just sympathy. I think I fell in love with you.”

You swore to God and Primus, your jaw just literally dropped. Or it feels like it. Then, you almost choked on air, being a blushing mess already.

“F-fell in love? With me? Are you serious?”

“Well, I pretty sure I am… You don’t need to worry, I don’t want to force you into a relationship or anything like that! I just… thought it would be better if you at least knew” Oh, Drift. Sweet Drift. Of course, you liked him too. He was fun and calm at the same time, intelligent and gentle… He was everything you wanted to in a partner! And even more, to be honest.

“N-no, no, it’s okay! I-it’s fine” Oh, you’ve never stuttered so much in your life. “I like you too. Or, um, I’ve fallen for you too… It’s just… No one ever liked me. Or, if someone did, they never told me. I’ve never been in a relationship and I… I’ve never thought someone might like me that way”

Drift was clearly surprised for a moment, but then he smiled gently and chuckled. “It’s okay. I understand. It’s must’ve been so unexpected for you. But, um, I hope I didn’t scare you? We can take things slow if you want to.”

You still was blushing and a little bit astonished, but you smiled at him shyly. “Yeah… That would be great.”

“Maybe dinner at Visage then?” (it’s, like, Mirage’s version of swerve’s. I’m sorry, swerve, it’s just too noisy in your place)

“Sounds good to me”

Rodimus

Rodimus wasn’t as careless and as arrogant as everyone thought. He too could’ve been confused or scared to talk to someone he likes. Well, not exactly scared, of course! If he was, he would never talk to you, and he talked to you very often. He just was scared wasn’t sure how to confess to you. He even asked some bots on the ship… Their answers always have been the same: “Just do something romantic and then go for it!” But nothing seems to be romantic enough. You deserved something amazing, just as amazing as you were. But he couldn’t find the right thing to do!

So, now he felt like a fool, standing in front of your door with a bouquet of your favorite flowers (don’t ask how he found out which one is it and where he found it in space) ready to ask you on a date. But, of course, confession first. 

He knocked on the door, once again thinking that he, probably, should’ve used his holoform. Well, it was too late now, your doors already opened. You stood there in casual clothes. When you saw who was at the door, you were thankful that you were not in your pj’s. 

“Um, Rod! What brought you here? I-I thought you had work today?” Then you noticed bouquet. “Is that… f/f?”

“Yeah, well. I heard you liked them, so I get some. Do you like them?” He gave you the flowers.

“O-of course! They are beautiful.” You smiled shyly, inhaling the scent of flowers. “Um… Is there a reason, or..?”

“Yes. Well, sort of. It’s in honor of our first date”

Flowers fell off your hands. You stared in shock at Rodimus. “D-date?”

“You know. You are pretty, I’m pretty handsome. We were made for each other! …and also I like you, so”

“You like me?!”

“Is that a problem?”

“No! No, of course not! It’s not a problem, I like you, too, but... This is the first time someone asked me on a date.”

He looked surprised for a moment, but then he smirked happily and... smugly. “Don’t worry then. I’ll make sure this isn’t the last time.”

Brainstorm

Brainstorm wasn’t exactly the shy type. A little absent-minded because of his scientific nature, but never shy. Then why he is, on one hand, wanted to tell you about his growing feelings, on the other always found excuses not to do this? Maybe, he was just afraid of losing you on this crazy ship. Maybe, he thought that you, a human, wouldn’t want to date a giant scientist robot. But then he thought that this was just utterly stupid. He deserved some happiness, and, after some observation, he figured out that chance of you liking him too was high enough. 

So, he waited for a right moment. You were alone, looking on stars. He came to you with a joke to lighten the mood. Jokes led to a light conversation, conversation to a comfortable silence. He smirked to himself, looking at you. You were talking about something you’ve read recently, sparks in your eyes. You two were very similar, talking about your favorite things with such passion.

“So, what do you think about it, Brainstorm?”

“I think that I like you”

Your heart skipped a beat. Did you mishear? He couldn’t possibly say that he...

“I mean, you are very smart. And you are the only person on this ship who can appreciate my genius...”

Maybe you did mishear after all...

“I could not help but fall in love.”

You didn’t. Oh my god, you didn’t. Brainstorm just confessed to you. 

“So, what about you?”

“I... I-I... Oh, Primus, I think I’m going to fall.” Your knees were so weak, you really are going to fall.

“Wha- Oh no-no-no!” He quickly caught you, not letting you fall. You stared at him with wide eyes. “Well, I guess you have fallen for me too”

You gave out a nervous laugh. “Y-you’re a jerk.”

“I don’t think so.” He smiled.

“But you are right. I did fall for you. I just... I’ve never thought that you like me too! Heck, I’ve never thought anyone could like me!”

“Well, I do. Now, how about dinner at Swerve’s?”

Skids

It was hard to live without memories, really. Skids hated it. But there was always a bright side, and his bright side was his friends. Swerve, Brainstorm, Nautica, Rung and you, of course. Making new memories with all of them, with you - it was the best thing in his new life.

And you, oh you. You were amazing. Fun and sweet, intelligent and understanding. It’s like you were everything he could wish for in a dear friend. Well, “friend”. He thought that he forgot how to like someone, heck, how to love someone, and then you came into his life. 

But Skids never told you. It was hard for him and he didn’t know why. Everyone else already knew, and this was the worse. Even Rung told him to confess because he was “too nervous” about it. But this was the deal! He was too nervous to tell you!

Maybe, the fact that Skids drank some high-grade for courage, was not a good thing. He wasn’t drunk, it would have been not very pleasant, but still, he felt just a tiny bit woozy.

And the fact that you just came into Swerve’s wasn’t great at all. Or was it? After all, he was drinking for courage, and this courage he needed to tell you about his feelings. 

“Hey, guys. Swerve, Skids.” You smiled. “Can somebody give me a boost?” Skids chuckled and lifted you up on a counter.

“Whatcha doin’ here, eh?”

“Just wanted to hang out with you”

“Sounds good to me.”

You two talked for a while, joked for a while... He didn’t even notice that Swerve silently left you two with a smirk on his face. You were smiling at him, you were laughing with him, you were here with him. You were telling some story when he looked at you with dizzily happy eyes.

“I love you.”

“What?” You stopped talking, looking at him with confusion in your eyes.

“I love you.” He stated, smiling like a fool.

“Skids, if this is a joke, it’s not funny...”

“This isn’t. I really love you.”

You blushed. He was so... happy? Almost like a child, with this little, but genuine smile. So he was serious. Oh my god, he was serious. 

“You do...”

“Yep. I do. Is it ok?”

“Yes! Oh my god, yes, of course! But I’ve never... I don’t even know... It’s all so sudden...”

“I guess, since I can’t remember anything, we’re in the same boat here.”

“I... I guess we are...”

“Do you feel the same?” He still had this stupidly sweet smile.

“I do.”

“You can’t even imagine how happy I am to hear it.”

The Great Hunt [or where to look for ideas]

      I've been struggling with this post (and writing in general) for quite some time and I finally got around to saying to myself 'Sit your ass down and get it written.' Well, that worked better than expected :D     It turns out that the most common reason for not being able to write – which applies to me and many, many others – is the lack of ideas or inspiration. Some have a hard time starting their story, others write themselves in the corner, others write without a problem but struggle with making the story come to life.

    The trick is to find something that makes you fall in love with that story so bad that you wish to push on no matter what. Maybe you find the perfect drawing/picture for your MC. Maybe you think of a mind-blowing plot twist or why not a whole language or species? Or maybe you just need to find something to get the cogs turning so you can get out of the hole you dug yourself into.    Everybody has their own thing - something that always inspires them, something that puts them in the mood for writing. If you're lucky, you have learned consistency and you can sit down and write every day, with or without inspiration. If you're like me, well then, you'll need a bit more to get started.   Here are the top ten things that help me get my head in the story: 1. Change of scenery   This one has always worked for me. I usually write at home, comfortably sitting on the sofa or in front of the kitchen table – with all the free time in the world. But nothing comes.    So I decided to try and write somewhere else.    This is a bit tricky because you can’t just bring your laptop everywhere and you can’t stay there for hours. You need

electricity (even if your laptop’s battery is awesome), you will probably need some food and drinks. So you have to find a cafe like Starbucks or Costa or even your local cafe if they will let you write there.    I found my writing den at Costa Cafe which is on the main street in the center of my city. You can sit in the back and have some privacy while you work. Or you can sit by the front window and watch people or enjoy the sun while writing your next chapter. Every time I go there I end up with twice as many pages in twice as little time. I definitely recommend. 2. Reading Books     I used to fool myself that I mustn’t read books in my genre since I didn’t want to unconsciously steal ideas and I wanted to develop my own voice. This is the worse disservice you can do to yourself.   Writers need to read. This is the only rule you can’t break. You don’t read to become like the other authors, you read to understand what works and what

doesn’t; how the pace makes or breaks a story; how to develop characters organically so they make sense and your readers love them. And last but not least — you read to be entertained.    From time to time you need to take off your writer’s pants and snuggle in your reader’s pajamas. You’ll be surprised how easily your imagination will come to life when you get lost into a new world. Yes, maybe you’ll find scenes and ideas so awesome you would want to put them in your book. And maybe you can use some of them for your story — it’s impossible to write a completely original book. Everything you can think of has already been thought of and told in some form. The point is not to come with a completely new idea but to make old ideas sound new again.  3. Watch a Movie/TV Show     I know this comes dangerously close to procrastination but it’s not when you don’t overdo it. And if nothing else helps, you have to find something to inspire you again…   What I personally do when I’m stuck is re-watch movies that previously inspired me (and that I liked enough to

watch more than once) or find new TV shows with an interesting storyline, particularly in the genre I’m writing in. You’ll be surprised how many twists and plot ideas you can get from there. And it’s okay to use those but be sure to make them your own and most importantly – be sure that they fit your characters and your story. Don’t do it for the big reveal or flashy moments. Do it because it’s the most natural progression or because it is something your character needs to do to evolve. 4. Looking at Pictures/Drawings     Visual stimulation is my greatest inspiration. For me, it may be anything — a person I meet on the street, an unusual sight, a picture, a drawing or a sculpture. Any kind of art usually gets my creative juices going as long as my weird mind connects it in some way to a story.    Often, when I go out to write I sit by the street window in the cafe and spend some time watching people. Their

interactions, facial expressions and even movements help me write realistic characters.    The next thing I turn to are sites like Pinterest and Tumblr or even Google itself. I’ve spent hours and hours on them looking at pictures, ideas and portraits for my characters so I can easily describe them in a way that will make them even more vivid for the reader. Sometimes, I browse through them for new ideas. Most of my plots have begun with a picture of a character, place or even an object. My mind needs little to get started and once it gets it on with the writing we go.  5. Find the Perfect Beat       Most of us have playlists made for a particular story. I know I do. And when I write on this story I put on that playlist and in 99% of the time, it gets me

in the right mind frame.     The trouble is that eventually those songs are going to become annoying or lose their power and then you’ll need something new. So I recommend spending some time on YouTube or Spotify just browsing through songs you’ve never listened to before. Start with a song you like or one that relates to your story in some way. YouTube will give you suggestions – check them out. Save the ones you like, skip the ones you don’t. (Damn I just sounded like the lady from the Spotify commercial). Even if a song doesn’t go well with the current story save it in another playlist. You’ll eventually finish this story and you’ll need inspiration for another one. Recycle your inspiration as much as you can — you’ll be surprised by the results. 6. Finding a Writing Buddy     Finding a writing buddy is a great idea. First, because you’ll get support and encouragement when you need them and second because you’ll feel accountable and you’ll try harder to put in the work.   The best option would be to find somebody from your city and write

together in person. After the initial excitement and getting used to one another, you’ll be able to spend hours not talking and just working on your books without being weird. If you can’t find somebody close by then find somebody online.    This person doesn’t have to be somebody that has read your work. But it is advisable to be a writer so they understand the whole process and can help with brainstorming if you hit a wall. And most importantly, they must be at least as committed as you are because there is nothing worse than you being excited and inspired to write and them talking nonstop and distracting you. 7. Going back to basics     Sometimes nothing helps getting you to write. Not your favorite music, not your favorite writing spot or a collage of your character’s portraits. I know the feeling — it’s the worst.   What I do when I hit such a roadblock is to get rid of everything that can distract me. Bye to my laptop, bye to my home where I can find a hundred things to do, bye to conversation or phone. I grab a notebook and two pens and I get out. The only thing I allow myself is some music — provided you have your social media muted or you listen to it offline. Minimize

your distractions.   At first writing by hand would be painfully slow. You may even just stare at the blank page and not write anything for a while. That’s okay. Let your mind go places, let it get bored. Because what do you do when you’re bored and you have nothing to distract yourself with? You think. And if you’re a writer as you claim then the first thing you’ll think about is your book. Maybe you’ll think about your favorite scene, or maybe about some plothole you noticed when re-reading, or maybe you’ll think of a cool new scene. Once you get there, let your hand do its thing and keep your mind wandering. 8. Talk to your characters     When I say talk to your characters I mean literally. I have a series called ‘Remnants’ and the second book is titled ‘Remnants of Souls’. I had some hard time writing it, for some reason it wasn’t moving forward properly, and I realized it was because I didn’t understand and see eye to eye with some of my characters.   So I put the book aside and wrote down a few interviews with the main

characters. You treat them like real people – if you’ve done your job right they will be just real enough – and you ask them the questions you don’t have the answers to; or even ones that you think you know. Then you let your inner schizophrenic out and answer from their point of view. It’s not only fun but it is a tremendously enlightening. Not to mention that you can later use those ‘interviews’ as extras for your followers when you publish that book.   You can try writing scenes with them that have no place in your book — something from their past or future; a dream or even something from a parallel universe. The idea is to understand what kind of person they are, how they react, why they do what they do and think the way they think. Once you know them well enough you’ll have no trouble finding ways to motivate them. 9. Brainstorm that idea     Getting stuck on a scene or a concept is something every writer runs into at least once a book. If you’re like me, you’ll run into that wall every few chapters. It’s not that I am such bad at planning (at least I hope) but I am constantly thinking of new cool ways the story can go: new scenes to add; new characters to create. And sometimes those ideas are conflicting hence putting me in the tight spot.     Brainstorming can happen in two ways. The first way, and the one I usually

choose because I prefer working alone, is to write a full plan for your story. I know that for you pantsers this is not an option but I am a planner so…    You can always change things along the way but the idea is to write the whole plotline, develop it and find a proper ending. Then you can see if the changes you have in mind can work without changing absolutely everything. If you’re not ready to commit to a plot you can write each scene on a post-it note or a card and just line them up and re-arrange them until you’re happy with the outcome.   The other option is to use a friend or another writer to brainstorm. The good thing with this is that they will bring a new, fresh perspective and that can spring ideas within you which can resolve your problems. The bad thing is that they have a different way of thinking than you and the ideas they give you may be confusing or completely inadequate for your vision of the story. So be careful when you pick your buddy for brainstorming. 10. Re-reading your story     I bet every book about writing you’ve read told you never to re-read or edit your work until you’re finished. This is absolutely true if you can manage it — it’s hard to finish something when you keep going back.   But if you put the editing aside sometimes you have no other options but to go back and re-read. Why, you ask?   First, because you’ll get excited anew for the story. When you began writing it you had an idea, you had vigor and you probably spent a few long, sleepless nights imagining the whole story, the

characters, the landscapes. Re-reading it will take you back to that state of mind.    Second, if you had spent a long time away from the story you are bound to have forgotten some small details from it which were hints or turning points for scenes to come. Once you read them your mind will connect the dots again and you’ll be able to pick it up from where you left it.   Third, you can think of new ways to continue the story. If you have spent some time away from it and you come back you look at it with new eyes. You may have forgotten some of your ideas, you may not like some of the scenes or the characters and you may also decide to take it in an entirely different direction. Making a Comic Into (Virtual) Reality

A conversation with the creative team of Schell Games, who brought Grant Morrison’s Eisner-nominated series Annihilator to life as an immersive virtual reality experience.

Legendary VR was established to extend the worlds of our films in exciting new ways - as seen with Kong: Skull Island, Warcraft, and Pacific Rim. At the same time, the VR team has been at work on dozens of experimental projects pushing the boundaries of storytelling within virtual reality. When Legendary Comics published the psychedelic Annihilator series by Grant Morrison, we saw a fun opportunity to expand and experiment with a new medium: comic books. Annihilator had its initial run as a 6-issue series in 2014, following the character of washed-up screenwriter, Ray Spass, as he begins to lose his grip on reality, leading him on a mind-bending sci-fi adventure alongside of his own fictional characters. Hailed for its zany creativity and Frazier Irving's stunning artwork, Annihilator earned a Best Writer nomination at the prestigious Eisner Awards for Grant Morrison.

When deciding how best to tackle this ambitious experiment, Legendary VR partnered with Pittsburgh-based Schell Games to help them bring the comic to life. "I wanted to see how we could translate the uniqtue panel-by-panel experience of reading a comic into Virtual Reality without just creating an animated short. It was important to maintain the pacing of a comic book," said Ethan Stearns, Vice President of Legendary VR. "After we saw how Schell Games approached their title, I Expect You to Die, we became excited to work with them to merge these mediums. Grant Morrison's source material is so cerebral and has such wonderful character dualities. This allows you, as the viewer, to project your character into the scene and maintain the continuity of the narrative." Legendary Backstory had the chance to talk to Art Director Ben Greene and Project Director Tim Sweeney from Schell Games about the process of adapting Morrison’s surreal subject matter, what it was like to literally lift a comic straight from the pages, and the future of VR as a medium. Q: For starters, talk about what the concept of the Annihilator VR experience is for those who haven’t tried it and discuss how it relates to the source material.

TS: We took the first issue of the series and we isolated a few key moments inside that, putting you into the perspective of Ray Spass, the narrator inside the comic book. You get to experience his apartment, his meetings with his agents, his mental conceptions of the work he is working on from inside his point of view. Those are things he is working on inside the comic book but the environment and interactions are unique to the VR experience. It’s those things unwitnessed, implied, or obvious in hindsight that foreshadow things deeper into the series. BG: What was initially engaging and worked really well was the fact that it was comic material and especially since we were targeting the Gear VR, we knew what our limitations were. Because of that, we could say “Hey, it would be neat if we just kind of placed you in the center of all of this crazy activity.” What’s cool about the Annihilator universe is that it’s this kind of this constant head-trip and you’re never quite sure what’s going on. So, that was immediately inspiring to be in the middle of being able to play with transitions and elements within the environment that would morph and change and surprise you in a first-person way. You are there, you are present, these elements are there with you and this isn’t something you would get from an amusement park attraction or even a funhouse. We’re able to manipulate the space around you so organically, the material in Annihilator gave us a lot of room to play with for the experience.

Q: Can you take us through the process of how this came to be from inception to the final experience?

BG: It’s been almost a year and half now since we first had that meeting and there was a lot of great material being thrown around during that brainstorming session at Schell. Somebody pulled the Annihilator book out of the box and said “Hey, this is something new that Legendary has on its shelves that they’re really excited about.” So, right from the beginning it was sort of highlighted amongst the materials we had to look at. I think that Jonas Quantum was sitting there and maybe some Pacific Rim, all of which are neat, but Annihilator pushed the possibilities of the experience a bit farther and more immediately. There was just more to play with, more to daydream about and brainstorm over. There were many connections and we decided to attempt to pursue it in a roundabout way and let the guests organically experience it from the main character’s space and point of view. His sort of descent into madness and what that is like. TS: Ben put together an animatic of the experience that gave everyone a clear impression of how we were going to approach doing this. It was shot-by-shot thinking about how the visuals stack up and with the medium being so new and the headsets being limited in technical capabilities, You always are thinking about if this is going to be something that can actually be accomplished. There were several things that drew us to this property, one of which being that, at its core, it’s playing with perception and crossover between realities, like what VR does as a medium. The medium is all about virtual reality and playing with stories about virtual reality. The other thing is that most of the environments and scenes we are seeing are very familiar to people coming in off the streets. So even if the virtual reality is new and terrifying, you get a gentler introduction than if you were to just dropped right into a roller-coaster. BG: I think that for me, VR represents a doorway into providing experiences that you might read about in a comic or might watch somebody experience in a film. Yet, it’s in a way that puts you in a scenario that you would never have any other way of experiencing.

Q: If this is any indication, VR seems to be an interesting medium for comics to continue experimenting in that’s not at all like “adapting” the comic to film or TV. The Annihilator experience shows you can create a fully immersive comic book to step inside of. What do you think about the unique blending of these two mediums and are you working on anything else in this realm?

BG: We’ve kicked around several ideas and ways of approaching a combination of literature and the environment you experience that literature in. Different ways of breaking out of the sequential way of telling a story in this new space. Currently, we aren’t working on anything but it’s always in our back pocket. We like to show off Annihilator when we have guests that’ll come through and be curious about what is possible with VR. TS: I think there is something unique about VR being a newish medium and there are fewer expectations placed on it. There are certain things we can get away with because we can create things like an immersive 2-D environment and what it looks like. We don’t have to modify the original artistic vision of the comics to make it work with animation or live-action or to make it work with 3-D. There is a purer interpretation of the art at a basic level and that isn’t something that can be done immersively, sequentially, interactively outside of VR. I think people are more accepting of the novelty of it all because the medium itself is so new. BG: We try to be aware of what else is going on in entertainment production, especially in games. When we started to wrap our heads around this, we researched if others were doing something like this. We jumped on the internet, asked our friends and we found a couple things encroaching in the same direction, but nobody had really jumped into it and we felt that we had something special by how we approached it. The VR experience is another way of more deeply understanding the universe of Annihilator. Ultimately, I hope that other developers interested in VR and comics can look at Annihilator VR and be inspired by it to create the next step in that direction.

Q: One of my favorite parts of the experience is how interactive it is, utilizing the gaze function to not only advance the narrative but also to add some unexpected and strange details that really flesh out the world it takes place in. How difficult is it creating such an interactive story world as opposed to a more straightforward “on tracks” approach and how did you go about deciding what details to include in the environments?

TS: When we do an experience like this, we need to make sure the critical path is obvious. People shouldn’t feel like they are going to get stuck at any point. Once that happens, we say “what else makes sense to add interest to this?” A lot of what happens then is figuring out other things to put in. Some of those decisions are very late in the game, but every piece of the environment is sort of a blank page for us to brainstorm what in the property could fit there. BS: There’s no mobility, just 360 degrees of world. We didn’t want to beat you over the head with all the details. We took basically the first issue and brought in elements to each of the scenes that expanded the story in a more organic and discovery-oriented way. If you just went through the main path, you’d get the gist of the experience, but if you go through a few more times there are new things you have the opportunity to find. Typically, people find three interactions per scene, but in reality, each scene has five plus things to discover. Each one tells a bit more about the story, or at least builds on the character. Even details like when you are sitting in the office, like on the table is his license and business card that tells you a bit about who he is and what he does. We have this piece of paper from the hospital that says “brain tumor”, which sort of highlights the information available throughout the experience. The more you go through it, the more you begin to explore. We were finding people would discover more about what was going on, but it still maintains the mystery a bit. TS: It doesn’t need to stand on its own. This really is an introduction companion piece to the comic. All the questions that people raise, we expect them to be answered by picking up the book.From the standpoint of what is going on in the experience, you want to immerse yourself in the graphic novel and we tried to get that out through the VR experience.

Q: It seems like every time someone tries the experience, there are new details and easter eggs to find. What are your favorite easter eggs that might go unnoticed the first time through it?

BG: I have a favorite that is hidden in the environment. It’s more for your subconscious to pick up on. Annihilator has an unsettling theme throughout the book, and we wanted to make sure that there was a not-everything-is-right feel. If you are in Ray’s study and you look around, there is a bookshelf off to the left of the desk. You’ll see it a few times throughout, but something throughout the experience that I added is that behind the books are all the dead haunted faces from the space station. There are all of these cursed victims on that station with him and I put their faces in the shelf peering out between the books. If you ever catch it, it is unsettling. TS: (Production Manager) Jeff Outlaw’s favorite is in the Annihilator scene, if you poke around the left desk drawers, one of the little cute andcreepy creatures will emerge and warn you about the danger. That’s something few people get. Only a handful of people will see it. My subtle touch to realism is that the chair will rotate to catch up with you and squeak even though you can’t see your body in VR. BG: When we were building the scenes, audio was super important. It builds presence in VR which is cool because it takes you into these spaces. It can totally help anchor you in the scene.

Q: Where do you think VR is headed as a medium and where would you like to see it go?

TS: We are very future-facing as a studio, and there is a lot of on-the-horizon talk. I hope that the technology catches up with the intentions of the creatives behind it. I would hope that even if something were small, that we wouldn’t have to agonize over it. There is a lot of constraint working in VR right now, especially in mobile content. Between that and the adoption of it, I think that I just want to see all of that stuff thrive and grow and expand. I want it to drive the numbers and I don’t want people to worry about the constraints. BG: Even just general budget constraints and all of those concerns should ease up as players/guests start to increase and more people are using VR. There are a couple cool things recently where 7 hour long immersive games are used in VR and consoles. I’m interested to see the numbers from that and how that inspires next year’s VR development in similar platforms. There are lots of cool things happening, but I’m holding my breath trying to see what people jump on. TS: One of the things we try to do here is figure out the best strengths of the medium and leverage those to help. That’s an area where there is still uncertainty. What are people going to get into? What will they take from it? It’s the best period for experimentation because it is an open field right now. I think that it should continue that way for as long as possible to avoid things getting trapped. If you take a look at some areas of technology, we enter a cul-de-sac where the evolution has metastasized. I just would like to see mediums reach their full potential before they become very solid.
