I've been watching the OG Batman Animated Series and playing around with character designs. That show absolutely rocked, and I loved every episode I've watched thus far. Especially because a lot of these episodes are competing to give Bruce as many boyfriends as possible in the shortest amount of time...

one thing I'm really beginning to love about Batman's rogues (BTAS specifically) is the PAGEANTRY. the PERFORMANCE of it all. I started thinking about this in regards to Joker because I think him being a performer and comedian should remain part of his identity, but all the recurring villains do it to some extent. Ivy has plants. Selina has cats. Penguin has birds. Yes Harvey's coin is tied to his compulsions, but he also puts in the effort to get a two toned suit and make sure every place he uses as a hideout has one half organized, the other half messy and broken. The man got a credit card under the name "Two Face".
I just think it's incredibly interesting when a supervillain has a schtick they cling to so tightly, and also to compare them to Bruce, whose idea of "theming" is sticking a "bat-" prefix onto every noun and verb imaginable. As opposed to the Joker, who takes many aspects from the concept of a clown, a playing card, and a comedian. Real theming is having a car that has a squeaky horn and springy toy snakes that pop out when you open the hood, not just painting a car purple and calling it "the Clownmobile". Batman needs to step up his game.

Year of the Bat - Number 10
Welcome to Year of the Bat! In honor of Kevin Conroy, Arleen Sorkin, and Richard Moll, I’ve been counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout this January. Today, we’ve officially reached the Top 10! TODAY’S EPISODE QUOTE: “Change is everything.” Number 10 is…Two-Face.
Tumblr media
How fitting is it we’re covering this villain’s origins on the 22nd? XD Anyway, I had a hard time choosing between this and “Feat of Clay.” Both are actually extremely similar in a lot of ways: both are two-part story arcs, both feature the origins of great villains in Batman’s Rogues Gallery – great villains whose appearances were teased in earlier stories, no less – and both feature great animation and an exceptionally dark, at times almost horror-movie-esque, tone. Not only that, but even the plots of these episodes bear some noticeable similarities! With that said, the animated series definitely provided the best take on Harvey Dent we’ve ever gotten, at least outside of comics themselves. In previous episodes – specifically the series pilot, “On Leather Wings,” and Poison Ivy’s debut, “Pretty Poison” – we’d already met Harvey Dent and gotten to know him a bit. We knew he was Gotham’s rather well-liked district attorney, we knew he and Batman had a sort of rivalry going on, and we also knew that he and Bruce Wayne were best friends. All these facts made the events of this two-parter all the more disturbing, because we had gotten to know Harvey pretty well. In this two-parter, it’s revealed that Harvey secretly suffers from some mental issues, and has a second personality inside him, referred to as “Big Bad Harv.” This second personality is all of Harvey’s repressed anger and bitterness, refined into one diabolical, snarly, cruel beast. When the DA gets too close to the schemes of crime boss Rupert Thorne, Thorne’s minions capture Harvey, and in the chaos that ensues, the DA’s face and body are horrifically disfigured. This causes Harvey to snap and become the supervillain Two-Face: a deranged gangster who vows to get revenge on Thorne, and make Gotham his own stomping ground in the process. Harvey/Two-Face was voiced by the late Richard Moll, who – like many actors in later years – would reprise the role many times in other takes on the character. Like Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy, Moll cemented the character and became the definitive interpretation. He is so wonderful as the vulnerable, tragic Harvey Dent, while his gravelly, gruff, snarly voice for Two-Face has become the gold standard which all other versions (at least in animation) seem to try and live by. Two-Face, himself, has always been one of Batman’s most tragic and personal enemies, and the Animated Series didn’t hold back on that front. Not only do the events of this story scar Harvey for life – both physically and mentally – but they also take a heavy toll on Bruce himself. This two-parter is magnificent not only because of how well it handles a great villain, but because of Batman’s role in the story, as well. In a lot of the villain introductions of the show, Batman is sort of a secondary player, in a way: the focus is either just on him trying to stop the villain in question, or on the villain’s descent into darkness. This episode not only gives us both those elements, but it also gives us great character moments for Batman himself, as he has to struggle with the guilt and sorrow that comes with seeing one of his best friends become one of his most formidable opponents. We got bits and pieces of this kind of thing in other stories, of course, but “Two-Face” – perhaps because it has more time to manage things – really goes all out. This isn’t just a great episode for Two-Face himself, but a great episode for Batman as well. It’s for this reason, I think that I decided to rank this higher than “Feat of Clay.” There’s no doubt in my mind that it belongs in my Top 10.

Tomorrow we move on with Number 9! Hint: “So, it wasn’t all for nothing.”

Never seen this movie, don't really care to. But I really like some of these. The Mister Freeze and Two-Face ones especially. The glowing eyes and the shadowed half of the face... beautiful designs here.

been rewatchin' BTAS recently. so here's is some of my absolute fav episodes to name. 📺💥
...
(naturally, that's not all of my favorite episodes, haha. BTAS is just nearly perfect in terms of writing of an animated show. aside from a couple of lackluster eps, an' a few that i just don't personally care about much.
but anyways …
‘blind as a bat’ was one of those eps, which actually made me so paranoid as a kid. losing your sight is one of the scariest things, which can happen to a person. an’ i love how they portrayed this via bruce, whose whole life is literally him fighting crime, but how will he do it now, when he can’t see anything? like, it doesn’t stop him of course. but man. it was so gut punching. BTAS not only understood batman / bruce, but they also gave him a lot of vulnerable moments like that. i mean, this was also one of like 2 or maybe 3 eps, where we see bruce tear up an’ it’s always gonna tug at my heart strings. admittingly, penguin mostly was there just to be well, an asshole, but i like how much it says about him, when he giddily an’ sadistically corners bruce, fully enjoying the fact, that he’s helpless.
‘eternal youth’, i gotta appreciate how terrifying this episode is. an’ the utterly messed up the concept behind it. i think, that BTAS had really nailed the fact, that poison ivy is honestly a horrifying person. her rapey gimmick aside, her motivations an’ how far she’s willing to go for it … oh, she’s such a delightful psycho! i love, love ivy who acts like this. a proper female villain to boot an’ who’s also not a one trick pony, but can bring a lot of more of awful an’ chilling things to the table. not to meantion, that it's always good to see batman's other rogues, than the clowns to threaten batman's loved ones, esp if they had no idea that they do it.
‘joker’s favor’, for what it worth i’m happy, that i still can fully enjoy joker an’ harley’s characters at least in some media. i suppose, arkhamverse is fine too, but over the years, i feel like both of the clowns were overused in literally everything under the sun to the point, where i’m unable to stomach them in most outlets nowadays. i jus’ don’ wanna look at them or hear about them or anything … but here? oh, what a blessing! the best harley to ever exist. an’ one of two jokers, that i actually really like. as for episode itself, this has such an interesting flavor to it. not only we get to see what it’s like for a normal gotham citizen to be at the wrong place an’ at the wrong time, but also what smth like that can do to an otherwise a simple, everyday man. also, the joker crawling on his knees like a coward is always great. since i feel like many writers forget that aside from a crazy murdereous psycho, he’s also supposed to be a narcissistic wimp, who’s deeply afraid of death. an’ it was harley’s debut ep too. she’s so casually evil in it as well. an’ that’s kinda why i drew her without a mask btw. since we do see her face in that very ep.
‘nothing to fear’. i’ve talked so much about that ep, but i don’t mind talking about it yet again. a life changer episode for me. i also remember that while ‘pretty poison’ was entertaining as heck, an’ ‘on leather wings’ was breathtaking in some scenes, i’m pretty sure, that it was ‘nothing to fear’, which fully convinced a child me, that i will be always on the clock, sitting next to tv to watch every following episode of this show. so, yeah, forever gentle of this one an’ the concept behind it. also so many parallels an’ bruce’s fee-fees. i love how jonathan would always have that deeper, private key to bruce’s mind. an’ how bruce is always there to terrify him right back.
‘read my lips’, when i was a kid, the twist of that episode made me so intrigued. bc i wouldn’t have ever thought about who the main villain was an’ how the show would handle it. like, you would expect a villain in typical sense. a man or a woman. or smth like that, not an actual dummy an' person who controls him, but belives that he's not. i love how this whole thing made bruce low-key paranoid as well, bc at some point, he also almost believes that the dummy is alive an’ cursed or smth. i also love how he doesn’t right away realizes that arnold is mentally ill an’ not just pretends like he is. bc it would have been such a clever scheme, if it was one to begin with.
to conclude this all, i will prob for sure ref those eps in my upcoming BTAS fic, bc yeah. i have a tunel vision in a way lol. but mmm, BTAS really feels like timeless classic at this point.)

Then the bat family finds out why their hero name is jinx
(so jinx y/n will share similarities to regular jinx from the show so if you see different lore to them then it's kinda a original part of y/n's character and stuff. Also the characters are bascially a mix of the original btas cause I like that series a lot and other media I've seen.)
Batman actually couldn't find a lot of information about y/n for a while. Which was strange and he decided to ask y/n and what y/n told him was when y/n was still a kid and with their sister. They use to live a low profile due to basically just trying to survive with two others that y/n seems to never try to talk about but after the accident, y/n was the abandoned by their only relative, their own sister. y/n was alone with no family to go too. All this cause of their gadgets, thinking they could help and they were so proud it finally worked but they had hurt and drove their only family away so y/n wasn't really found by Slade first at the time but by Harley Quinn and seeing little y/n covered in rain and a bit dirty from bascially being out in gothams alleys for so long and the rubble from the accident, so she took y/n in and luckily joker liked y/n cause of the monkey grenades and other stuff y/n was able to make that they still had and y/n was put in a kind of clown like type of get up as Harley Quinn took a picture of y/n's first Gotham bank robbery as she still kept the picture and y/n liked feeling like being in a family again but again y/n was separated from their new family after the Batman busted jokers plan and y/n didn't see it was Batman as the smoke grenade had shielded him from their view so y/n ran but that's as much as y/n is willing to tell anyone.
Y/n never really tells anyone about their past, not even the ones that y/n considers the most trusting as y/n isn't ready to tell anyone that as they are afraid of being seen as a monster by their only family, they were basically a forced assassin for half their life until finally escaping and becoming jinx but some part of them is just afraid. They just don't want to be alone again.
(Anyways! That's it for right now and if you want more please don't be shy and request any ideas for stories or y/n's! But for now please stay safe and drink water!)

I LOVED YOUR POSSESSIVE RIDDLER ASK SO MUCH😭 Can you also do one for the penguins?
a/n: ooohhh yes I absolutely can, many of them know a good thing when they see one and likely won't let go no matter what! Again like other headcanons I may have removed a version or two to refrain from repeating too many of the same headcanons.
Content Warning: possessive/jealousy tendencies/behaviors
The Penguins Being Possessive:
Arkhamverse Penguin:
- It takes everything in him to not just brand you somehow-
- Like a necklace or chain with a silhouette of a penguin, or suggest you get a tattoo…
- Oswald has worked his ass off for what’s his and has no qualms about proving his possessions.
- If someone even utters your name in a slimy dismissive manner, they're dead-
- Anyone that even thinks about whisking you away from him-dead-
- You're constantly at his side if not safely cooped away in a luxurious hideout only you two know about.
- Oswald is protective as much as he is possessive.
- He never thought in a million years he'd genuinely find someone to actually love him and all his flaws…he will be damned if he lost you.
Reevesverse/Farrell Penguin:
(haven't finished the series so sorry if these aren't as accurate but nontheless!)
- Oz makes his possessiveness known by how often his hands are on you-
- Innocent touches like holding your hand or a hand on your shoulder…
- To more provocative ones such as a grip on your thigh or his ringed hand around your waist.
- Actions speak louder than words after all-
- No matter who is in the room or where you two are at, he lets those know off the bat you're his and off limits.
- You're never too far from his side, only ever away for your own safety…
-You're likely one of his best kept secrets, not only so you won't be in any danger, but also so no one can steal you from him.
Gotham Penguin:
- Much like Arkhamverse Penguin, anyone that even tries to come within your immediate vicinity without his knowledge or your consent - they're immediately on his shit list.
- Someone struts up and tries to buy you a drink, expect them floating lifeless after taking a bullet to the head at the docks.
- You'll have to inform him as this relationship persists who your friends/family/allies are so he doesn't get the wrong idea…
- However if it's someone you aren't keen on, you feel safe knowing Oswald isn't too far away.
- He doesn't want to chase you away or suffocate you, he just adores you so much and he knows the price of loving someone like him…and doesn't want you to ever have to pay for it.
BTAS Penguin:
- Practically makes it a point to announce your relationship status to the world any chance he gets.
- I imagine this Oswald likes to do subtle signs to show you belong to him-
- Like matching colored clothing items…
- A handkerchief or his cufflinks matching something on your person…
- You both wear some sort of charm or brooch that compliments the other, matches, or is the other piece to a full image.
- Oswald prefaces every pet name with “my”
- My dove, my love, my darling, my dear, my heart…the list goes on and on.
Telltale Penguin:
- Like Arkhamverse…has a few ideas on how to show you're his in flashy and permanent ways…
- Oz would be thrilled to see a penguin tattoo on your person somewhere~
- You have a matching mask at the very most.
- Oz is definitely touchy, has to have his hands on you to ensure your proximity-
- Makes it blatantly clear to anyone that even looks at you funny that you're his-
- Most of his boxing matches were likely a result of him putting some low life in their place.
- Thankfully, you were always there to patch him up even if you're chastising him the whole time for being far too possessive (you kinda like it though)
The Batman (2004) Penguin:
- Think of those seagulls from Finding Nemo but far more aggressive-
- Or like Daffy Duck when he sees a bag of wealth waiting for the taking-
- MINE MINE MINE MINE-
- He just dares someone try to hurt you or whisk him away-
- Ozzie is deeply insecure and worries that one day deep down you may leave him-
- He tries to show how much he cherishes you, adores you…you belong to him and vice versa.
- You'll likely have to reassure him to keep from immediately ripping someone's head…
Batman Unlimited Penguin:
- Oswald would like to think he's gotten too old for such petty possessiveness-
- He knows you're his, and he is yours…
- Yet much like other pengys on this list, he's got some deep-rooted insecurity.
- Like others, he'll be the first one to make it clear to anyone and everyone in the room that you're his…
- “Ah yes this is my partner~”
- Don't be surprised if someone who's been giving you too much attention is just suddenly gone-
- No doubt, Oswald will appear back at your side, your hand in his, and a proud smirk stretched across his face.

It is kind of amusing, the idea of Reed Richards replacing Tony as the new centre character kinda figure in the MCU, partly because the pair were kind of united in their Making Bad Decisions phase in the comics but also in the contrast between the two characters via the information we already have available about the characters.
Both Reed and Tony are famous super-scientists, but their impact on the world is notably different. Tony's dad, Howard, was a futurist and utopian of the Walt Disney mold, but despite Howard being on the edge of super-science since the 1940s few if any of his inventions seemed to actually benefit the world (first season of the Agent Carter show even highlighted how his failed prototypes for mundane beneficial inventions somehow became weaponry regardless, such as a vest intended to warm soldiers in cold weather effectively becoming an involuntary bomb-vest).
With Tony, ditto. While he does argue that his inventions did benefit the world via military funding (such as the clean energy arc reactor tech... which seemingly is restricted solely for SHIELD and his own personal use), what inventions Tony he tended to hoard (or, again, gave to SHIELD, with his hovering tech being integrated into the helicarriers for example).
A result of this is respite theoretically super-science being a thing in the MCU since the 1940s, come the 2000s/2010s their world is pretty much still exactly the same as ours, with no noticeable divergence points in history to suggest the society was changed by the inventions of Howard, Tony or their contemporaries.
Contrasting with with what we've seen of MCU Reed, who comes from a retrofuturistic alternate 1960s where the super-science of people like Reed HAS seemingly made a measurable change to people's lives, as show by the Tomorrowland-ish architecture of his alternate NYC, the cars etc.
It's funny, there's this trope called "Reed Richards is Useless" which is kind of a meta commentary on how despite super-scientists like Reed existing in comics for decades, due to the need of the comics status quo to not drift too far from our reality, none of their inventions can have a wider impact on the world.
This is in contrast with, say the new DCU where due to the existence of human-like robots since 1942, come the 1990s/2000s androids can legally be defined as people at least in terms of criminal sentencing. Likewise, in the DCAU once technologies are developed (such as the Man-Bat, human-animal hybrid stuff) the tech is used by other scientists in BTAS, JLU before becoming the basis of its own subculture once the world of Batman Beyond comes around.
It's just like, seemingly the upcoming Avengers films are going to be able integrating the FF, the X-Men etc. into the MCU, which means that Pedro Pascal's Reed is going to be going from a world where he was making a meaningful change to the world to one where he's... y'know... useless because he can't change the status quo by introducing flying cars or something.

UTRH×WFA Dimensional Body Swap (Part 1)
Disclaimer:
-I haven't read Batman much so my knowledge is limited to BTAS, UTRH The Movie, Young Justice, Super Sons, WFA, and a few other comics with specific banter. I am so sorry to Tim, Steph, Cass, Barbara, and Duke fans out there.
-WFA in this fic is pretty much an alternate universe where heroes actually went to therapists (and no one suffered from Character Assassination) so some things didn't happen or did happen but went differently.
-I assumed since Bruce got therapy earlier, he became a better person and father in the process. Which led a domino effect where Dick became a flawed yet better brother to Jason (albeit not as good as the present Dick). Jason, who is showered with more love than the original, ended up with his personality in WFA.
-Under the Red Hood arc in WFA most likely happened earlier since Jason is still a whooping 19 year old. So, assuming the mainline Jason is currently 22 then WFA Jason would've been 17 or even 16 year old during his Red Hood debut. It also went off rails in the middle since this Jason can't even face the Joker without going on panic attack and was saved by Bruce. They made up not long after.
WFA Jason arriving on his safehouse, only to get flash-banged and ended up in a different place. He's in an alleyway—one he didn't recognize. He notices that the air is different—still polluted but lacked the distinct smog of chemical concoctions made by Batman's Rogues Gallery. He steps outside for a bit, this place totally isn't Gotham. It's way too bright and modern—wait, is that the Statue of Liberty? No way, Jason is in New York? But why? Is it a villain attack?
He reaches for the phone in his jacket, realizing it's out of power. Damn it, who knew that teleportation messed with your phone's battery? He picks up the sound of battle—hearing a familiar clash of escrima sticks against flesh and bones. He knows exactly who it is—hearing a similar sound not too long ago. Jason trails after the source, striding through the streets and went up the stairs. He hears bone cracking, gunshots, and two voices—an older man and Dick talking. Maybe Dick got teleported too? Suddenly, a figure in black and blue falls from the rooftop.
Jason's heart stopped for a moment and instinctively catches Dick in his arms. He let out a sigh of relief, hauling Nightwing onto the fire escape. Huh, did Dick got a new hairstyle? Why did he changed into his older gear? Whatever it is, it can wait. They have to move towards a safer place—leading the older man to the rooftop.
"Are you okay? I heard gunshots and came to check." Jason asks, his worry evident even through the voice modulator. He checks on Dick's injury, finding a broken hand and a few bruises.
Dick looks at him funny, assessing his appearance before asking. "Since when did you have a bat symbol on your costume?" Jason can hear the scrutiny and suspicion in his voice. He raises an eyebrow—though Dick can't see it through his helmet and instead answers in confusion. "Since a few years ago?"
Dick doesn't buy it for whatever reason, his brows furrowing. "You weren't even back that long." He says matter-of-factly, his suspicion growing. "Whatever it is you are scheming, it needs to stop now. My hand is full with the Pierce Brothers and I sure as hell don't need you to make it harder by impersonating me."
"What do you mean?" Jason asks incredulously, now it's his turn to look at him funny. Pierce Brothers? Impersonating? Tonight is getting weirder and weirder. Oh god, could it be?
"Exactly what it means—" Dick is cut off by rains of bullets, dodging them by his sheer reflex and agility. He follows through, moving just in time and glances up at the taller building across the road. However, Jason is suddenly tackled by Nightwing—a grunt escapes him as they roll all over the concrete floor five feet across his original position.
"Wait, Nightwing! I think there is a big misunderstanding—"
"What misunderstanding? I know it was you under that Nightwing costume, murdering people left and right."
"I haven't—" Jason trails off and quickly adds. "What year is it?"
"Oh, the big bad Red Hood forgets his calendar? Obviously, it's—"
Oh.
Oh, that was... years ago.
But how? He joined the family not too long after Bruce found him, panicked and scared. He was supposed to capture the Joker and gave Bruce an ultimatum. However, Jason wasn't brave enough—that laugh is enough to sent him into a panic attack and ruined whatever plan he had.
It took a while to understand that Bruce loved and cared about him—in his own way. They went to Black Canary for consultation, a middle ground between their differing minds. She explained that Bruce would lose everything if he broke his one rule—his friends, his family, and even himself. He found out along the way that Dick had avenged him, albeit briefly and it took a huge toll on the man's mental health. He also found out that Tim wasn't half bad—begrudgingly so.
It wasn't always a smooth journey, of course. Not enough people understand the sheer patience and forgiveness it took to went through the path of recovery. Jason wasn't even allowed to patrol until he was in good enough headspace. Rubber bullets was the compromise they made on one of their therapy sessions. Now that Jason is out of place and time, without the support of his family and friends—with bloody reputation to booth—how will he return home?
(Might upload the fic to Ao3 if it got good enough response).

I hope you feel better!
You had BTAS Riddler + prompt 14 in your drafts before your break, could you please write that?
🥀Yandere BTAS Riddler + Prompt 14🥀
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-----------------------------------------------------
Warnings: yandere trope, stalking, breaking and entering, possibly ooc riddler as it's been a hot minute since I've seen the animated series, kinda ambiguous ending.
Yanderes are OK to enjoy in fiction. They should stay fiction. They are not examples of healthy relationships. These behaviors are NOT okay in real life. They are horrid. This is for entertainment purposes
------------------------------------------------------
Your clock's ticking fades into the background, drowned out by you turning up the volume on your radio, blaring a favorite song of yours. Background noise as you worked diligently on making your dinner, checking temperatures, checking on whatever was cooking, grabbing some utensils and ingredients you forgot to snag initially.
For once you didn't feel on edge. You didn't need look over your shoulder. You didn't need to sleep with a weapon near your bed. You didn't need the police on speed dial. If felt safe. He had been locked up for almost three months at this point. The longest break you've had from the deranged man.
Course the usual antics in gotham went on, appearing on the news in the morning to report on what criminal had striked this time. One's that you weren't roped up in. You were just an outsider observing for a change. No obsessed man spouting confusing riddles at you and proclaiming love.
Now he was locked away in Arkham far away from you. A court issued restraining order was slapped on top of that too. Pushing his distance even farther.
You could slow down, time to yourself, no need to worry for you safety, for whether you'd wake up in your bed or not. Now here you were, peacefully making yourself dinner. You couldn't even recall the last time you'd done so.
The music is loud enough to where it almost drowns everything out. Almost.
Everything except for the distinct sound of glass breaking.
You whip around on your heels, quickly grabbing the nearest knife to arm yourself, back against the counter as your eyes land of dreadfully familiar figure. Towering over the remaining shards of your windows, brushing his blaring green suit off.
"Apologies for the window. You changed the locks on everything so I couldn't get in the usual way."
You point the knife in his direction, making a clear gesture for him to stay away. He only gives unamused glance at it. This wasn't the first time you two had stood juxtaposed like this.
"Quite the harsh greeting dear. Not even a hello after all these months?"
He takes a single step forward. A shakey shout leaves your mouth with little hesitation.
"No! Get out! You know you aren't supposed to be here! You know damn well you aren't supposed to be near me! You know what those papers say!"
He leans on his cane. Head tilted to the side, a chortle leaving him
"Darling, a silly piece of paper can't keep me from you!"
Of course it wouldn't. A piece of paper wouldn't stop a parasite. A leech. You're not face to face with the epitome of a law abiding citizen are you? He's broken the law long before he decided to swoon over you. The crimes he's done for you before surpassed violating a restraining order. It was just a meaningless sheet to him.
Neither of you moved. Both just stood still. Silence hung in the air. Just as the knife in your hand did. You eye the phone on the wall. Would the city police help? They barely responded in time before. Always end up having to wait for the bat to save you. That wouldn't do anymore would it?
He's killed. He's kidnapped. He's tormented. The aslyum didn't deter him, nor jail, nor any semblance of law or punishment. He'd just keep doing it.
The kicthen light bounces off the blade.
Offering a permanent solution.
The only riddle now was wether or not you would succeed.

Year of the Bat - NUMBER ONE
Welcome to the final entry for Year of the Bat! In memory of Kevin Conroy, Richard Moll, and Arleen Sorkin, I’ve been counting down my Top 31 Favorite Episodes of “Batman: The Animated Series” throughout January. And now, it’s time for the big moment. Today, we’ll be covering my absolute favorite episode from this great series! OUR FINAL EPISODE QUOTE: “You’d think one of us would have got ‘im by now.” NUMBER ONE IS…Almost Got ‘Im.
Tumblr media
Alongside “Heart of Ice,” this seems to be the episode that almost everyone names as their favorite, or at least very high up among their favorites. I am obviously no exception, but I do find this fact funny, since, really, this and “Heart of Ice” couldn’t be more different from each other. “Heart of Ice” is an artistic powerhouse of an episode; Wagnerian in its themes and presentation, with a dark and sardonic edge. “Almost Got ‘Im” is…basically just another episode. It’s not poorly animated, but it’s not necessarily the BEST animated. It’s not one that goes deep into the minds of the characters, or one that features depressing concepts or especially disturbing visuals. (In fact, in many places, it almost feels like something out the 60s.) So what makes this episode so special, and a favorite for so many? I have no idea, but maybe the plot will give us all a hint: the story begins with five of Batman’s greatest villains – Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, Killer Croc, and Poison Ivy (who arrives late) – all sitting down in a bar and playing cards. Each of them starts arguing about who has come the closest to killing Batman, and they each decide to tell a story about when they feel they came the absolute closest, to see whose story is the best. And…that’s basically it. Yeah. There’s a bit of a twist at the end, which I won’t reveal here for all…what, five of you who haven’t seen it? But aside from that…that’s pretty much all there is to this story. It’s just a bunch of baddies sitting down and playing poker, while chatting about their foiled schemes. And, to be honest…that’s exactly WHY this episode is so great. It’s such a simple idea, and one ripe for so many creative concepts. And while we’ve had many episodes that have focused on the villains and their origins, I’d argue never before have they felt so…human as they do here. They’re not really up to anything dastardly in the moment, they’re just…a bunch of people playing cards. They tease each other, and rile each other up, but you never feel there’s any real DANGER here: for one reason or another, they’re just…playing cards, and managing to hold themselves together, despite all their differences.
I think that exact reason is why this episode is so beloved. Watching these villains interact this way, seeing the different relationships and personalities at work, and in such a relaxed and humorous sort of episode, is really something unique. You never really get a story like this anywhere else in the Animated Series (the closest thing to it I can think of is “Joker’s Wild”)…heck, it’s hard for me to think of anything like this in any comics I’ve read, or even in other superhero TV shows. It almost feels like a theatrical play, or something similar to “Five Characters in Search of an Exit.” It’s funny, it’s bizarre, and there’s just that little touch of darkness always lingering on the sidelines (these ARE villains, after all). And while Batman himself is barely in it, his proverbial specter looms large throughout. “Almost Got ‘Im” is not a perfect representation of what makes “Batman: The Animated Series” so great. It’s by no means what I would say is the “definitive” B:TAS episode. But that’s precisely what makes it so special and so beloved. It’s one of a kind, in the best possible way. If you love Batman Villains, the Animated Series, or just these kind of weird stories in general, and you haven’t seen it yet…well, then all I have to ask is, WHY NOT?! Go and watch it. Now. That’s an order. BEGONE!
Tumblr media
Anyway…that was “Year of the Bat!” Thank you all for joining me, everyone! I hope you’ve all enjoyed this trip down an animated memory lane (or Crime Alley, as the case may be). Here’s hoping 2024 is a fine time for all! :)

can I ask why do you hate bat-related comics? I’m not a batfam fan myself, so idk what’s wrong with them.
I don't hate the Batfam nor do I begrudge anyone who loves them, they can be very fun and interesting! BTAS will always have a place in my heart. But I do hate that the density of bat-content is so intense it is like a black hole.
The Batfam and Gotham-related people are fine, they are great, but they do not need nearly 20 books a month when other characters are exceedingly lucky if they get two. It's not fair. It's annoying.
It's not just in monthly books, but in fandom spaces it is difficult to enjoy content of non-Bat faves without a Bat coming up, often in ways that degrade the non-Bat character only to prop them up as superior. Fandom attitudes ruined much of the experience, which never should happen, but here we are.
I cannot tell you how often I have engaged in conversations with people about comics and when exchanging pull-lists and talking about favorite runs etc the first thing out of a person's mouth isn't anything relevant to what I just said but "What about Batman?"
It's a form of unintentional passive aggression I cannot convey properly how SUCKY it makes you feel.
Or when I am writing Konbart and someone in my AO3 asks "When is Tim going to show up?" 🙄 This has happened more than 3 times.
Do you see where I am going with this?
I also, bluntly, don't find hyper-surveillance and the overstepped boundaries very interesting, it unnerves me. Yes, this is only present in some comics but just thinking about it freaks me out. We already have Facebook listening to you, I don't want Batman listening to me as well!

Which riddler do you think would be most likely to score some batussy? Most people throw their hats into the unburied ring, but i wanna know if your opinion differs.
Then there's the question of which riddlers are even interested i guess but this is about who COULD theoretically get some. Would welcome thoughts on the second one as well though.
ᵗʰᶦˢ ʷᵃˢ ˡᵒⁿᵍᵉʳ ᵇᵉᶠᵒʳᵉ ᵐʸ ᶜᵒᵐᵖᵘᵗᵉʳ ᶜʳᵃˢʰᵉᵈ ᵃⁿʸʷᵃʸˢ
first of all please take me to dinner before hitting me with a word like batussy, Second I wish I knew more about Unburied to comment! But I will take your word on that and move on to ones I am more aware of.
BTAS Riddler n Batman are already two seconds from it anyways so that's a solid choice. They such a powerful "we're so similar that it's infuriating to both of us and tbh we kind of complete each other but we don't wanna confront that" dynamic that's So destructive I love it. Then there's again, Absolute Riddler who's childhood friends with Bruce and very close with him! From what I've read they seem to have a good relationship and both confide in each other a decent bit. Plus if you're nuts, Ed references Alan Turing when talking about a robot/ai, which Yeah obviously but also Alan Turing was famously gay so that could be evidence (don't worry they've scheduled to have me put down soon, you'll all be free <3). Fuck it, more flowers to Harley Quinn Show Riddler too, I think he could do it. Hell maybe he has.
I'm gonna go with BTAS Riddler as my champion for Most Likely to Bed the Bat

Helloo
Uhm, later I'd love to have tattoos! Like in some places like the chest, the right wrist with a bat on it (both of my parents have it so I want it to be a sort of family legacy) and other tattoos on my arms or legs or anywhere where it's pretty. Even some ear piercings.
So, how would Secret Six (or/and BTAS/Gotham Central Hatters would be with their partners having tattoos and piercings and even when they're getting some?) Because yeah they would look more mature and less innocent, but still, if they like to dress cute for him, it would be ok?
Thank you for your analysis of the characters too🫶🏻❤️💝💚🧡💛💙🩵💚🖤💙❤️🩵
Hmmm... Given that you still dress cute, I don't think any of the Jervi would object excessively. There'd be some general concern about you handling the pain (because we all know none of the Jervi can take seeing you in any sort of discomfort), but other than that, Jervis mostly respects your bodily autonomy as a grown woman and understands that you exist outside of the Alice role he's assigned you (even if he does have a tendency to infantilize you).
Part of this comes from the fact that BTAS and Gotham Central are more sane that other Jervi, though this is very subjective. Secret Six is more out there, but he's very coherent in his more lucid states.
Kinda similarly to the ask about Secret Six and a s/o who's into military style hats, there's a contrast between your sweetness and the toughness of tattoos that he finds oddly charming.
It also helps that tattoos were becoming more socially acceptable (specifically on women) in the 90s. Albeit, there're probably some old fashioned sentiments about it being too "vulgar" for you floating around somewhere for all of the Jervi.
Expect 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Bat' to crop up every now and again because of the bat tattoo.
Part of me thinks, when you two are falling asleep together, he'll absentmindedly trace his fingers over the lines of your tattoos, committing them to memory.
