i said i was gonna do it and GUESS WHAT we’re getting back into oc talk. so it’s time! for your cherry pie! Chelan!!

keeping with the fruit & liqueur naming theme, Chelan is based on a cherries jubilee! a big inspo for her character design as far as the cherry theme went was this concept art for Junko, and her general overall vibe was very much inspired by Janelle Monae. Chelan is also one of the two girls in the group to be specifically named after a specific cultivar of her representative fruit; she used to just be called Cheri for a long time but that’s too simple. I crave convolution in everything I do.

Of the four girls, Chelan at face value is probably the one that has the most Protagonist Energy about her, which is ironic because of the four she is not the protag. She’s eager to please and determined to prove her abilities in whatever she does, but she also has a pretty notable inferiority complex about her. It’s something she’s very aware that she has, and has been growing well out of over the years, but it’s definitely left a mark that hasn’t gone away. In her DQ11 context, I imagine she and Eleven would have much to talk about; while I’ve always pictured Eleven as being the sort of “conceal don’t feel don’t let it show” type, Chelan is the sort that looks at her trauma and thinks “huh, I’m gonna have to address THAT sometime aren’t I” and then never does.

Eleven: I don’t know, Chelan. How do you convince yourself it’s alright to share your problems with others? Chelan: ??? How do I what?

Cherry Quest XI

In dq11 context, Chelan was born and raised in Puerto Valor, the only child of casino owners Stella and Beaulieu (the chelan cherry cultivar is a hybrid of the stella and beaulieu cultivars!). Because she essentially grew up in a casino, Chelan has both glamorous aesthetic tastes, and also a great admiration for the girls that worked there in the bunny suits. The Maras Casino doesn’t force any of its staff into the suits, it is purely choice of the employee, but Chelan has truly always thought the bunny girls were the coolest and most beautiful women, and looked up to their sense of self-expression, and I’m writing this out and I am FULLY aware that this is a buckwild thing of me to say particularly thinking of Jade and Babs, but it’s in line with Chelan’s personality I swear.

as mentioned in Nana’s blurb, Chelan is her younger adoptive sister by a year, and this is where Chelan’s inferiority complex comes into play. while any child with a new sibling might feel put out by the sudden lack of attention, Chelan’s case with Nana was more complicated: Nana was adopted by the Maras family because she had the same magical aptitude as Stella, which was also something Chelan didn’t have. So not only was there a new child potentially taking all her parents’ love, but she was also more inherently talented than Chelan was. suffice to say, Chelan didn’t like Nana very much in the beginning, and the hurt and jealousy and abandonment she felt only got worse until she actually came to understand just how much that magic was hurting both Nana and Stella. the two girls became pretty close after that, and are now 100% thier fcukning SISTER.

like Nana, Chelan also works in the casino as a card dealer, but she has an eye for interior design and likes to decorative the floor for events. because she admires the bunny girls so much, a part of her genuinely wants to wear the costume herself one day and has wanted to for years, but she’s too self-conscious to actually go through with it. AGAIN, I know, I’m being ridiculous, but the character is as the character does

Cherry Builders 2

Chelan is also featured as my Builder in DQB2! her backstory is pretty much still the same, with her family casino now being in Cantlin, and her personality matches up pretty well with the Builder’s default one: she builds because she wants people to be happy, and she just wants to be useful above all else. this does of course cause Problems(TM) down along the line, but it all sorts itself out its fine. its all fine.

something that hit me while writing the Buildroth First Kiss Romcom is that Builder Chelan, while still having her preferences for fancier buildings and interiors, would never build something like that for herself. her resources have to all go out for everybody on the Isle of Awakening, and she’ll make do with the bare minimum of what she needs (probably her most frivolous item that she has is her vanity + make up mirror). She had actually been living in one of the hermit’s old shacks outside of the Scarlet Sands without telling anybody where she lived, before Malroth found out and demanded she be his roommate from then on out (oh my god they were roommates).
