A man’s relationship with his mother reveals oodles about him, and the way #ErikLeePreminger shared tales of his mother, the great #GypsyRoseLee—with deep affection, humor, patent honesty, fun and wit—only underscores what a gracious gentleman the great #burlesqueicon raised. Ok, so she told him it was “none of his business,” when the then-17 year old pressed her to name his biological father… At 33, determined to become a mother, Gypsy zeroed in on the legendary #OttoPreminger. Determined to be a parent on her very own, the filmmaker only found out about his part in her pregnancy when Erik was born. And even then, she insisted to her friend he would have no part in it. As for Erik, she made him promise not to reach out to his bio-dad. Some years later, and with #Gypsy’s eventual blessing, the senior Preminger did and father and son finally met in Paris. The anecdote is richer in detail than I have space for here, and it’s only one of many wild stories shared at last night’s visual album of a presentation, one that included home movies, live narrated by Erik, at the #HollywoodHeritageMuseum. @DitaVonTeese co-hosted the evening, and we scored original 1949 programs from one of Gypsy’s shows (sold in the museum’s fabulous bookstore, choc-a-bloc, with new and used books on everything #Hollywood, scroll thru). I also scored a vintage copy of Erik’s 1984 bio on his famous mom, “Gypsy & Me,” republished recently as “My G-String Mother.” Get it. And he penned a thoughtful, personalized message in each copy—including mine.
