C. T. Salata Contractor (Photo taken by Scott Fajack on February 25, 2024 at Clinton & Van Ness in LA)
Chetko Trifko "Charles" Salata was born on December 8, 1888 and died on May 29, 1941 at age 52. He is buried at the Serbian United Benevolent Society Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA. He was married to Melania Miskovich and had five children (Find a Grave).
He took out an advertisment in a publication of the Charter of the City of Los Angeles in Effect July 1, 1925 where he described his business as "contractor: special concrete and street work" (Los Angeles Daily Journal, 1925).
In 1914, Salata lost a contract to Adam Dalmatin for sewer work on 6th St. between Grand Ave. and Gaffey St. in San Pedro, CA (Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer, Volume 14, Engineers and Architects Association of Southern California, 1914).
A contract was awarded to Salata "for doing work of Road District District Improvement No. 42" in Los Angeles, CA. He lost a contract for construction in Manhattan Beach, CA. Both were in 1915 (Municipal Journal and Public Works, Volume 38, Municipal Journal and Engineer, Incorporated, 1915). Interestingly, in the same year, I see that Salata put in a bid for a highway work project in LA County with H.A. Taylor. This is the only time I've seen that (Western Machinery and Steel World, Volume 6, 1915).
In 1921, Salata lost a contract to E. A. Baker to improve Avenue 30 and another to W. D. McCray to improve Coringa Dr., both in Los Angeles, CA (Southwest Builder and Contractor, F. W. Dodge Company, 1921).
Tumblr media
In 1927, Salata lost a concrete contract in San Diego, CA for the improvement of Churcheward St. and another for improving streets in its Monterey Heights neighborhood (Western Construction, Volume 2, King Publishing, 1927). Interestingly, the Los Angeles Directory Co.'s Los Angeles City Directory 1927 is the only time I see him listed as anything other than "C.T." (The Los Angeles Directory Company Publishers, 1927).

August 2018
Summary: My Senior Year. Man was I a mess. I was doing my stage management internship while writing my twenty four page research paper. Which, I had no plan for at all that year. So, I decided last minute to just do it on my favorite fairytale and just run with it. My professor had me rewrite the first half of my paper at least ten times that semester before I even got it right. And, by that point I was stressing on whether or not I was going to even be able to finish my paper.

Science Fiction and Political Philosophy: From Bacon to Black Mirror (Politics, Literature, & Film), edited  by Timothy McCranor and Steven Michels, Lexington Books, 2020. Cover image by Mickey McCranor, info: rowman.com.
Sometimes called the “literature of ideas,” science fiction is a natural medium for normative political philosophy. Science fiction’s focus on technology, space and time travel, non-human lifeforms, and parallel universes cannot help but invoke the perennial questions of political life, including the nature of a just social order and who should rule; freedom, free will, and autonomy; and the advantages and disadvantages of progress. Rather than offering a reading of a work inspired by a particular thinker or tradition, each chapter presents a careful reading of a classic or contemporary work in the genre (a novel, short story, film, or television series) to illustrate and explore the themes and concepts of political philosophy.
Contents: An Introduction to Science Fiction and Political Philosophy – Timothy McCranor 1. Fiction and the Science of Self-Reflection: Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis and the Idols of the Mind – Erin A. Dolgoy and Kimberly Hurd Hale 2. Utopianism and Realism in Shakespeare’s The Tempest – Paul T. Wifford and Nicholas Anderson 3. Frankenstein and the Ugliness of Enlightenment – Jeff S. Black 4. Technology and Anxiety in Melville’s “Lightning-Rod Man” – Tobin L. Craig 5. The Head, the Hands, and the Heart: Political Rationalism in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis – Damien K. Picariello 6. Technology and Human Nature in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World – Nivedita Bagchi 7. An Exhortation to Secure Humanity against the Buggers: Ender’s Game – Steven Michels and Danielle Sottosanti 8. Seeing and Being Seen in the Kingdom of Ends: On Immanuel Kant, Adam Smith, and Star Trek: The Next Generation – Daniel J. Kapust 9. Knowledge of Death in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go – Constance C.T. Hunt 10. Founding a Posthuman Political Order in M. R. Carey's The Girl with All the Gifts – Erin A. Dolgoy and Kimberly Hurd Hale 11. Bacon, Transhumanism, and Reflections from the Black Mirror – David N. Whitney and Steven Michels Index About the Contributors

When the San Francisco Chinese came to New England
"In April 1870, employees of Calvin T. Sampson's Shoe factory in North Adams, Massachusetts, all members of Knights of St. Crispin, a labor organization, struck for higher wages and against the ten-hour day. He promptly fired them. A few days later, Sampson brought in replacements from a nearby town. Union members persuaded the men not to stay. Sampson's solution was to send his superintendent to San Francisco with instructions to return with 75 Chinese laborers.

"The incident sparked widespread working-class protest across the country, shaped legislative debate in Congress, and helped make Chinese immigration a sustained national issue. Twelve years later, the United States passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, barring most Chinese immigrants from entering the country. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the first major anti-immigration law in American history." -- Marjorie Duby for inquiryunlimited.org
