One of the simplest things you can do to protect your health is to keep track of indoor air quality. Viruses spread through the air and accumulate in spaces that are poorly ventilated. By opening a window or running on an air purifier you can reduce your risks of catching an airborne virus. While viruses spread most during the winter, some viral illnesses like COVID are present all year round, and can cause serious short and long-term health issues. This post explains how monitoring and improving indoor air quality can help protect your health through all the seasons.
Viruses can spread through the air at long distances Viruses spread through droplets and smaller particles called aerosols that are expelled by someone who has an infection. This can happen in a number of ways including coughing, sneezing, talking, or simply breathing. The highest risk of catching a virus is when you are close to the source, where there is a greater concentration of droplets and aerosols.
Viruses can also infect people from larger distances because viruses trapped in aerosols can linger in the air for hours, like cigarette smoke. When a room is poorly ventilated, aerosols accumulate, increasing your risk of catching the virus and getting sick, even if you are not standing close to someone who is infected.
Tumblr media

COVID spreads throughout the year Many respiratory virus illnesses like the flu spread predominantly during winter, because they can survive longer in cold and dry conditions, and because people are more likely to gather inside in poorly ventilated rooms during the colder months.
However, COVID can surge throughout the year. COVID peaks occur regularly because the coronavirus that causes COVID is extremely contagious; new variants can emerge quickly; and immunity from previous infections and vaccinations decreases over time. COVID usually surges in winter and summer, however the virus can circulate at high levels at any point during the year.
COVID still causes serious illness While things are different than in 2020 when COVID first appeared, COVID hasn’t gone away. In many countries, COVID is still the most deadly infectious disease. And COVID infections continue to cause long-term health issues for many people.
Anyone who gets COVID can develop Long COVID. Although people with severe initial infections are most likely to develop Long COVID, you can get Long COVID even after a mild initial infection.
Because coronaviruses mutate quickly, you can be reinfected with another variant as early as several weeks after you have gotten COVID. Reinfections can occur multiple times, and the more reinfections you have increases your risk of developing long-term health issues.
People with Long COVID can experience a wide variety of symptoms that can last weeks, months, or years after the initial infection. COVID can increase the risk of developing new conditions or worsen pre-existing ones including heart disease, diabetes, blood clots, neurological conditions, and chronic fatigue.
Even being sick with COVID in the short term is disruptive because most people are infectious with COVID for at least 10 days. That can mean missing days of work, family time, or an important social event.
Simple things you can do to avoid COVID The best way of reducing your risk of developing long-term health issues from COVID is by taking a few simple steps to prevent getting COVID in the first place.
Staying up to date with the latest COVID vaccine reduces your risk of serious illness, infection, and Long COVID. Wearing a mask helps boost your own protection, protects others around you, and works against any COVID variant or other type of airborne virus.
Another effective way to reduce your risk of getting sick from airborne viruses is to improve indoor air quality.
Tracking air quality can help reduce your risk of sickness You can track air quality with a carbon dioxide monitor. When we breathe, we expel carbon dioxide molecules, which accumulate in rooms that are poorly ventilated. A high carbon dioxide reading means that you are likely breathing in a large percentage of recirculated air. If that air contains viruses, that puts you at greater risk of getting sick.
With this knowledge you can take steps to reduce your risk. This can be as easy as opening a window to allow particles with viruses to escape and fresh air to come in. If opening a window isn’t possible, HEPA purifiers or Far-UVC Light systems can help remove particles with viruses from the air.
To learn more about how carbon dioxide monitors can help reduce your risk of getting sick from viral illnesses, watch this video.

Counterpoint: we should also fear rolled-up windows and be aware that many public spaces are NOT properly ventilated.
CO2 should be below 800ppm to avoid symptoms like lethargy and headaches caused by dying brain cells but if you're a rich dork walking around with an Aranet you'll see readings on public busses exceeding 2,000 ppm. You'll see better readings in locations frequented by rich people - bougie stores and offices - than you will in locations where poor people live, and you'll start making connections between poor air quality and bad health outcomes among poorer people. You'll realize that the reason you used to fall asleep as a kid in class very likely had to do with the fact that putting thirty people in one room with closed doors and windows is a ventilation nightmare, and you might start to question the conventional wisdom that kids are germ factories and start to see in the prevalence of illness among school-age kids an example of an invisible divide that gives clean air to those at the top of the social hierarchy and forces certain categories of people to make do with recycled breathing from others' lungs.
when i got my medical certificate i very confidently answered the question "what do you do if a person becomes unconscious?" with "remove from the room immediately" only to be met with puzzled silence by the instructor and that's when i learned that the deeply ingrained nautical fear and grim reality of seamen and their rescuers asphyxiating in enclosed spaces due to build up of toxic gas or especially lack of oxygen does not translate to land.

Freshness Sealed: How Headspace Gas Analyzers Revolutionize Food Packaging
Tumblr media
Why Headspace Analysis Matters More Than Ever
Every bite of packaged food relies on an invisible atmosphere. Even tiny amounts of leftover oxygen can trigger spoilage, off-flavors, or mold long before the “best-by” date. Headspace gas analyzers measure O₂, CO₂, and N₂ right inside sealed packages—without opening them—so you catch packaging faults or gas-mix errors in real time.
Tumblr media
Ensuring MAP Integrity on the Line
Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) swaps ambient air with a tailored mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide to slow oxidation and microbial growth. But without verification, a misaligned sealing head or faulty gas flush can let oxygen sneak back in. Inline headspace analyzers automatically sample each pack, flagging deviations instantly so you reject bad product—not an entire production run.
Tumblr media
Products That Benefit Most
Certain foods demand heroic protection:
Meats & Poultry: Prevent discoloration and rancidity in red meat by keeping O₂ below critical thresholds.
Dairy & Cheese: Maintain precise CO₂ levels to inhibit unwanted bacteria without altering taste or texture.
Bakery & Snacks: Lock in crispness by displacing oxygen with nitrogen, cutting mold and staleness.
Fresh Produce & Salads: Balance O₂ and CO₂ to slow respiration—extending shelf life without soggy leaves.
Ready-to-Eat Meals: Ensure multi-ingredient stability in sandwiches, sushi, and more.
Compliance, Traceability & Brand Trust
Regulatory bodies like the FDA and EU regulators require documented evidence that packaging processes meet safety standards. Headspace analyzers seamlessly integrate into HACCP plans, creating digital audit trails for every batch. This not only safeguards against recalls but also builds consumer confidence when you prove “freshness guaranteed” with hard data.
Boost Production Efficiency & Cut Waste
Manual sampling leaves blind spots. Inline headspace analysis delivers continuous feedback—catching leaks or gas-mix drifts the moment they occur. Automated alerts stop the line, reject faulty packs, and prompt instant adjustments. The result? Dramatic reductions in spoiled product, fewer material costs, and optimized gas usage that shrinks your bottom-line impact.
From Reactive QA to Proactive Quality
With headspace data in hand, operations teams shift from firefighting to fine-tuning. Historical gas profiles reveal trends—maybe you’re over-flushing gas or running sealing temperatures too low. Armed with these insights, you calibrate your line for peak performance: lower cycle times, less wasted protective gas, and consistently flawless packaging.
Conclusion: In today’s competitive food market, “fresh” is a promise—and a responsibility. Headspace gas analyzers deliver the real-time, non-destructive checks you need to protect flavor, extend shelf life, and meet every regulatory bar. When every package leaves your line verified, you’re not just sealing in freshness—you’re sealing in trust.

Biofuel, Smarter: How a Gas Analyzer Supercharges Efficiency, Safety & Compliance in Clean Energy Combustion
Tumblr media
Biofuels Are Clean—But Only If You Control the Burn
Burning biomass or biogas may seem sustainable, but without proper monitoring, it’s a recipe for incomplete combustion, harmful emissions, and equipment damage. That’s where a biofuel gas analyzer makes all the difference. It’s not just a sensor—it’s your 24/7 combustion watchdog.
What Is a Biofuel Gas Analyzer? Your Efficiency Superpower
Tumblr media
A biofuel gas analyzer tracks the real-time concentration of gases like methane (CH₄), carbon dioxide (CO₂), oxygen (O₂), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon monoxide (CO), and more. These analyzers use advanced tech like :
NDIR (for CH₄ & CO₂)
Electrochemical sensors (for H₂S, CO, NH₃)
Paramagnetic detection (for O₂)
TDLS (for precision in harsh gas streams)
Whether you’re running an anaerobic digester, a landfill gas engine, or a biomass furnace, these devices let you fine-tune combustion in real-time, reduce emissions, and keep everything running safely.
Why Gas Monitoring Is Non-Negotiable for Biofuels
You can’t fix what you can’t measure. Fluctuating fuel quality and moisture levels in biofuels make combustion highly variable. Without a gas analyzer, you’re flying blind—and risks pile up:
✅ Incomplete combustion wastes fuel and raises CO ✅ Excess oxygen reduces thermal efficiency ✅ Unseen H₂S corrodes expensive equipment ✅ Emission violations bring legal headaches
With continuous gas analysis, operators get instant feedback and can adjust air-fuel ratios, activate desulfurization, and avoid dangerous combustion instability.
What Gases Matter Most in Biofuel Combustion?
Tumblr media
Your analyzer should match your process. Here's what you should monitor:
CH₄: Fuel energy content
CO₂: Combustion completeness
O₂: Air-fuel balance
H₂S: Safety & corrosion risk
CO: Incomplete combustion indicator
NH₃ & NOₓ: Regulatory compliance (especially in SCR/SNCR systems)
Each gas tells a story about your plant’s health, efficiency, and emissions footprint.
Choosing the Right Analyzer: What to Look For
The best gas analyzer is the one tailored to your fuel, environment, and control system. Look for:
Multi-gas capability
Harsh-environment durability
SCADA/DCS integration
Fast response (<15 sec)
Auto-calibration & remote diagnostics
ESEGAS offers custom-built analyzers that tick all these boxes—because biofuel combustion is too important to leave to guesswork.
Conclusion:
Control Emissions, Boost Output, and Stay Compliant A biofuel gas analyzer doesn’t just help—it transforms your entire combustion process. From maximizing energy yield to meeting strict emissions standards, it’s the essential tool behind every efficient, clean, and safe biofuel system.

Tonight I am a lighthouse keeper.
My lighthouse is surrounded by thick fog. Tonight it is more important than ever for me to keep the fire alight.
The waves crash on the rocky shore of my island home. I pick at food from a can, watching the ocean from the window.
There are no ships tonight, I am completely alone. I have been for some time now.
Some nights it feels like the fog will never lift. Others, I can see every star in the sky even with my lighthouse breaking the darkness.
I can see schools of silver slashed through by pewter blades, waves of grass rolling in the tide.
I watch crabs wrestle for the best territory, I watch wharf roaches run across the stones.
I check my cell phone. It is 8:46. My work became obsolete thirty years ago.
