Why the fuck would they be sending up fodder like the Ear Devil up against Chainsaw Man? Who the hell is afraid of ears? Did they want people to lose their ears?

Probably, yes

I believe they served up those devils so that those specific associated concepts are erased, on purpose. In #170, Barem made it clear that his and Public Safety's goal with Denji was to get him to do just that.

So they got those guys chopped up,

And then hurt CSM to get him to start eating to recover.

It's like a fucked up version of the sushi conveyor belt Barem was talking about in #170. That ended with heads being served up, too.

This is all according to plan. If my theory is right, the names of those fodder devils just became very very important.

With this chapter, it seems that the discussion about whether Chainsaw Man completely eliminates the concepts represented by the eaten devils or whether people simply forget them is over. However, it's important to mention that it seems that the ability to hear has not been eliminated: we just don't see ears. Therefore, it could still be the case that Chainsaw Man simply causes people to stop perceiving these eaten concepts. That is, the ears still exist, but people are not able to perceive them.

If this is the case and Barem/Fami's plan was to use CSM to eliminate the demon of death (and avoid Nostradamus' prophecy), then, in the very hypothetical case that it does happen, there can still be two different outcomes:

People are no longer able to die

Death still exists, but people simply ignore it.

The second case makes Makima's line in part 1 about the "4 possible endings apart from death" that were eliminated by CSM quite disturbing

Talking to someone on twt about how the spiral imagery here is reminiscent of the cochlea of the ear. (The spiral, Junji Ito Uzumaki flashbacks anyone?) the piercing of the heads through the ear followed by Pochita's devouring of the Ear devil, bringing about the erasure of ears. The cochlea being what allows us to hear by transmitting sound to our brains...
