The incoming Trump administration has even more plans to delay electric vehicle adoption than previously thought. According to Reuters, which has seen transition team documents, the Trump team wants to abolish EV subsidies, claw back federal funding meant for EV charging infrastructure, block EV battery imports on national security grounds, and prevent the federal government and the US military from purchasing more EVs.
During the campaign, candidate Trump made repeated references to ending a supposed EV mandate. In fact, policies put in place by President Joe Biden only call for 50 percent of all new vehicles to be electrified by 2032 under US Environmental Protection Agency rules meant to cut emissions by 56 percent from 2026 levels.
Instead, the new regime will be far more friendly to gas guzzling, as it intends to roll back EPA fuel efficiency standards to those in effect in 2019. This would increase the allowable level of emissions from cars by about 25 percent relative to the current rule set. US new vehicle efficiency stalled between 2008 and 2019, and it was only once the Biden administration began in 2021 that the EPA started instituting stricter rules on allowable limits of carbon dioxide and other pollutants from vehicle tailpipes.
About a third of the population looks to the California Air Resources Board, rather than the EPA, to get their emissions regulations.
The so-called ZEV states (for zero-emissions vehicles) do have something closer to an EV mandate, and from model-year 2026 in these states (California, Connecticut, Colorado, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington) and the District of Columbia, a third of all new cars sold by each automaker will have to be battery-electric—assuming the EPA grants California a waiver to allow this to happen.
As with the first Trump administration, we can expect a sustained attack on California's ability to set its own vehicle emissions regulations and any attempts by other states to use those regs.
More Tariffs
Trade tariffs will evidently be a major weapon of the next Trump administration, particularly when deployed to block EV manufacturing. Even the current administration has been wary enough of China dumping cheap EVs that it instituted singeing tariffs on Chinese-made EVs and batteries, with bipartisan support from Congress.
The Biden tariffs were justified on economic grounds as a way of defending US industry against an unfair level of state support from China toward its own automakers. The Trump team plans to use national security as the justification for its own barriers to EV imports, using section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act.
But according to the documents seen by Reuters, the tariffs on battery materials will be applied globally, something that should significantly increase the cost of a new EV. The transition team plans to allow individual countries to try to negotiate exemptions to the tariffs, Reuters wrote.
No More Tax Credit, No More Public Chargers
While the Trump team plan is meant to boost US auto manufacturing versus imports, a key tool in forcing more local EV production is also not long for this world. As we thought, the $7,500 clean-vehicle tax credit will be eradicated once Trump takes office.
But according to Reuters, the Trump transition team also plans to claw back as much of the $7.5 billion allocated for charging infrastructure put in place by Congress as part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Much of this money has not been spent, due to the lengthy timelines involved. Rather than be disbursed directly by the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, the funds were instead allocated via the states, in the same manner as highway funding. As such, there could be significant amounts of this program that will never see completion.
One Trump team idea could speed up EV charger deployment—the incoming administration intends to do away with environmental reviews that are required for projects like charging stations.
Other rules and regulations meant to protect the public are also set to be scrapped, including one that requires all automakers to report to the government when one of their vehicles crashes while operating under partial automation, such as Tesla Autopilot. This standing order has caused plenty of grief for Tesla following more than 1,500 crashes, with multiple injuries and deaths, and Tesla's opposition to the requirement is widely known.
Finally, the US government fleet can be expected to get more polluting. Currently the federal government is required to purchase more EVs as it replaces old vehicles, with a requirement for all light vehicles to be zero emissions by 2027. This will no longer be the case under Trump, who will also end any Department of Defense programs that are meant to purchase or develop electric military vehicles.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea.” He watched his friend shove another pair of pants into their backpack, definitely too small for the planned trip. They were taking with them just one backpack with exactly two changes of clothes, a tent, sleeping bag, few cans of beans, few packets of crackers, nutritional bars and matches. He watched as the small pot got thrown on top of everything in such way the backpack couldn't be zipped up completely.
This was definitely a bad idea. Worst of the worst ideas.
“Because it’s not, Usopp. But as a certified cracker, unlike yourself, my melanin-non-deficient friend, I have the need to explore dark alleys and cursed churches. You know it best.”
Usopp clenched his teeth. Yeah, he knew. How many times they had him up and running to get them from some shady place, because they decided it was fun to spy on some shady people? How many times did they get home with scratched, bruises, sprains and full-on open wounds, just because of that stupid adrenaline addiction?
“You’re starting from Delaware River and heading east-“
“More like north-east.”
“Doesn’t matter. What matters is, you won’t come across any shelter or parking lot for another 25 miles.”
“It’s barely 20 miles, Usopp. If I walk quick enough, I’ll get to the shelter in about 7 hours.”
“Yeah, in a straight line it is. But the trail isn’t straight line. And you never walk on the trail either. That’s precisely why you shouldn’t go!” They straightened their back and put hands on their hips, staring at Usopp. “Yeah, I said it. You never follow the trail, even in normal woods. You never went hiking in the mountains before. Yet you’re going alone, three days alone on the Appalachian Trail. I’ll say it again - alone. Those mountains are older than the trees. They existed before continents broke apart! Who knows what lives there?!”
They raised their eyebrows. “Don’t tell me you believe in supernatural all of a sudden.”
“I don’t. I’m bravest man in the world and I conquered hundreds of mountain trails! You should trust my expertise!”
They nodded, small smile stretching their lips as they threw backpack on their shoulder and headed for the exit. “Sure, see you in two days, Usopp! Remember to feed the cats for me!”
The door slammed shut behind them. They didn’t even bother to lock the car. It was old, beat up, not to mention small and rusty can of garbage on wheels. No one would even look for any valuables inside something like that. With one last look, they bid goodbye to their only mode of transportation and turned around to face tall trees they looked at only from safe distance. Well, up until now at least. One last deep breath and crunch of gravel under their steel-toed boots marked the beginning of their journey.
Even if the air itself wasn’t all that warm, especially once they walked deeper into the forest, they felt sweat trickle down their back, making shirt stick uncomfortably to their skin. First fifteen minutes were the worst, the hardest part about hiking or even walking in general was to choose the best possible pace. Once that was done their body locked into automatic mode, so they could enjoy the nature. No bugs bothered them thanks to the spray Usopp pushed into their hands right before they slammed the door in his face. Wind rustled leaves high up, moved some branches. Few birds were singing in the distance, but other than that the path they chose was as silent. Soon the crunch under their boots gradually disappeared, pace became slow and erratic and before they knew it they had to stop. Huge bush appeared right in front of them. They turned to look in the direction they came from. No road in sight. Not even littlest, skinniest path leading them wherever they stood now.
Goddammit. Why Usopp just had to be right?
They sighed, turned on their heel and started the journey back to the trail. It couldn’t be that far, especially if they stick to walking in completely straight line. And maybe if Usopp was right this time, if sticking to marked trails was such an issue for them, they should just go back home after all.
Small sticks cracked under their boots as they bent down yet again to go under branch. Weird, they didn’t remember having to do such things before. And they definitely would remember that, even if they didn’t realize when they left the trail altogether. With heart beating just a little too fast already, they stopped completely and tugged backpack off their back. It slipped right out their hands and landed on the ground with heavy thud. Ignoring completely that sound like this shouldn’t happen where sticks, leaves and moss would cushion the fall and muffle any sounds, they pulled compass out of their pants’ back pocket and faced the way they just came from. It should be more east than north, that’s for sure. Small wooden box was already cracked due to old age, but the rest worked perfectly fine. They laid it flat on their hand and waited patiently. Needle slowly but surely travelled towards the north, like it always did. And they knew they had to be going north-east. Their inner compass, sense of direction, was often described as unnaturally good, especially when it came to areas not touched by land development. Even on auto-pilot they would be going more towards north or towards east.
Alarming surprise, totally unwelcome, came as the tip of the needle pointing straight at them. Somehow, they were going more or less to the south. Complete opposite of where they should be.
This was less than ideal situation for sure.
No panicking took place, even though their first instinct was to bolt ahead in hopes that the trail was just few feet away. But they knew in this situation it would only make matters worse. Assessing the situation as calmly as it was possible, they took notice of sun hanging weirdly low. Sure, they expected to hike last hour or so in darkness before coming across the shelter. That was given since they started at about 1pm. Yet the time seemingly ran away, seeped through their fingers immediately after their foot touched unmarked territory of ancient forest. They pulled out their phone, expecting to see no signal, but to their surprise the device showed one, occasionally two bars. Good, at least if they didn’t get out on their own, they could always call for help. Deciding to give themselves one more chance before loosing all pride and asking for any kind of assistance, they pushed phone into pants’ pocket and picked up heavy backpack. Compass once again was raised to their eyes so they could see the needle even in unfavorable conditions. With one last deep breath, they turned to where small device pointed at north and began their journey back.
Light disappeared slowly but surely. They couldn’t even see compass soon, let alone branches they came across that struck them right on the nose few times. Blood dripped from rather nasty cut right under their right eye, feeding the ground beneath their feet.
I could’ve called for help when it was still light out. No one will come get me when it’s already night.
Weak stream of yellow light with flashlight as a source battled against dry, cold darkness, only dispersing it for mere second before being pointed in another direction. They tried their hardest not to cry, violently tugging on the rope, trying to put their tiny tent up in rather small clearing. Only after loosing all hope of finding their way back by themselves, they felt their stomach rumble as if tectonic plates rubbed each other, parting after millennia of sticking together to reveal bottomless pit. Somewhere down they felt a demon whisper to just sit down and feed it, but they knew better. If they sat down before putting tent up, they’d end up sleeping on the ground.
Finally the fabric, although pressed from two sides against two trees, resembled something tent-like, so they could sit down. Trying not to think about anything ominous like being completely alone in the middle of the woods older than civilization itself, they plopped heavy backpack in front of their legs. It landed with weird thud. Brows moved closer together in concern as one hand moved the pack out of the way while the other shone light in that place. Something, hidden beneath leaves and sticks, reflected the light back at them. Curiosity overcame them quickly. With one hand still holding the flashlight, they knelt down to get better access to the item. Quickly swiping the debris away and giving it one last huff to get rid of loose dirt, they looked at-
“Rock?” they mumbled out loud, turning their head slightly to the side. It was weird. This was just big, regular rock, although it had rather smooth and flat surface with one irregular dent in it. Disappointment quickly turned into positivity. Now they could assemble small fire to heat up the beans without huge risk of it turning into a disaster with mass causalities. Flashlight went up and in between their jaws to keep both hands empty. Quickly rather large rock was completely free of any debris with only small pile of leaves, pine needles and occasional pinecone remaining in small dent. They fished out pack of matches from their backpack, excited to eat something warm after such uneventful day. But the first match failed to catch any spark. Second match got its sulfur head broken off. Third started smoldering, but they sat there with almost whole hand stuck into dry pile of sticks, looking at the fire dancing in such a way to not lick any of the kindling. Eventually few more matches had to break for them to throw the box to the ground. Not wanting to attract any wildlife, they bit their tongue to not cry out in growing frustration.
Somewhere deep, in the back of their head or maybe at the bottom of their heart, they knew this feeling was just a panic wearing a mask of anger.
Ignoring all sounds, trying not to look around every five minutes, they swiped stone with their hand clearing their table for the night. Sharp pain, like lightning bolt shooting through their arm, made them pull whole arm away quickly with quiet yelp. Upon close inspection of outer edge of their palm they noticed small cut. Blood already dripped onto the rock.
Wide mouth full of sharp teeth stretched into a grimace, something that could resemble a smile of someone was desperate enough for this conclusion. It watched them rummage through their backpack, trying to find tissues. Bottomless pit of a stomach growled inhumanly loud. They twitched, looking up at the sky.
“Damn it, and on top of it storm is coming? Can this day be any more unlucky?” they mumbled, quickly gathering their things and putting everything into wonky tent.
Strength flew through it for the first time in decades. Slowly, the dirt parted with a crack, revealing spine, huge muscly back, then shoulders as it stretched with loud yawn. It could hear them perfectly fine even from this far. Listening intently as they opened can of cold beans, trying to tell themselves that they weren’t really scared, that panic wasn’t eating them alive, because they rarely heard of people being found after disappearing into Appalachian Forest, it took a deep breath. Musty, salty, sweaty stench of rotting fear filled its lungs, expanding its large, naked chest. It stared, listened and sniffed the air, feeding on underlying panic filling their body. Minutes and hours passed, they went to sleep, trying to calm their heart down. But it was impossible considering all the rumbling, sticks snapping and ground slowly shifting in the distance.
As it took first wobbly step towards tent sitting right on top of its summoning circle, vulnerable human twitched in their shelter. Their soul sensed incoming danger long before their brain could even comprehend why their rather peaceful dream took a sharp left turn into gory nightmare full of blood and stench of burned corpses.

What were you doing one hour ago? Looking around online for house painting businesses. I want the crown moulding on the kitchen cabinets in the new house painted white to match the rest of the cabinets.
Where were your parents born? My mom was born in Delaware, and my dad was born in New Jersey.
Have you ever used public transportation to get to work? Yep, back when I was in college and working at the university airport, I took the bus there for the first year-ish that I worked there, until I bought my first car.
What do you miss the most from before Covid times? Not having to worry about catching it lol. Unfortunately I'm not able to get any further Covid vaccines because 2 out of the 4 boosters I've had so far gave me heart problems, and the most recent one gave me a full-on heart rhythm disorder that I need to take medication for long-term. It's been over a year since that last booster and I'm still not better. I'm very pro-vaccine, I'm just one of the very very few unlucky people to have a serious complication from it. But thankfully I've never had Covid, I'm really hoping I simply have some sort of natural immunity to it.
What has been the best thing to happen to you in the past year? Traveling to Ireland last September/October with my husband, parents, brother, and sister-in-law. And also my husband and I are currently buying a house which is super exciting.
Who do you have listed as emergency contacts in your phone? My husband, my brother, and my parents.
Are you prone to jealousy? Nope.
How did you get through the lowest point in your life? Loads of self-care, and the support of my husband.

Who in your family has the coolest job? My husband is an airline pilot, and as a former commercial pilot myself (non airline) of course I think that's cool. I also have a second cousin who's a boat captain up on Cape Cod. Oh and my brother's job is pretty neat too, he does anti-fraud investigation in the banking industry.

What is something that drains your energy really quickly? Socializing with anyone other than close family. I'm a hardcore introvert, that shit wears me out so fast.

What is your favorite food to put gravy on? Roast turkey and stuffing.
Do you know anyone from Canada? Yep, one of my friends from flight school was from Canada. And my Great Grandy and Nana lived in Montréal for many years, but they weren't originally from there.

DL 190 - ALCO PA-1 at Kansas City, KS por Zach Pumphery Por Flickr: On its way to new owner Genesee Valley Transportation Company is the famous ALCO PA-1 restored by preservationist Doyle McCormack over the past 2 decades in Portland, Oregon. The locomotive began moving east in late April from the PNW on BNSF Railway, arriving at Kansas City early this morning on BNSF Train H PASKCK9 25A, appropriately behind a warbonnet painted Dash-9. In this view, the locomotive is at the "Tall Tower" at BNSF Argentine Yard. The unit is on home rails at this former Santa Fe facility. This engine was built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway by the American Locomotive Company in 12-1948 as ATSF 62-L, builder number 76541 wearing the famous red and silver Warbonnet paint scheme leading famous trains such as the "El Capitan" between Chicago and California. On 4-5-67, the Santa Fe retired the unit and sold it to Morrison–Knudsen in Boise, ID. 4 Ex-ATSF units including this one were rebuilt by MK with the "PA-4" classification, for the Delaware and Hudson on 8-11-75, with this one becoming D&H 18. Under D&H ownership, they were used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack", and later by the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority hauling commuter trains around Boston. The last PA's to operate in the United States, they were sold in 1978 to the NdeM, where this one ran as DH-18 until 1981. All 4 of those PA's remain, 2 at the National Museum of Mexican Railways, and 2 in the US. In 2000, McCormack of American Freedom Train and SP 4449 fame worked with the Smithsonian Institution to bring two of these engines back to the United States. What was left of the 16 and 18 came home on flat cars to Oregon. Doyle bought a set of trucks in Canada to replace the ones that were missing when it arrived from Mexico, and the hulk of a BC Rail M420B for its 251 prime mover, electrical cabinet, and traction motors. 16 later wound up at the Museum of the American Railroad in Texas where it is steadily being restored to its Santa Fe appearance. McCormack's father worked for the NYC&STL, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, and his first cab ride when he was 12 was aboard the real NKP 190. Doyle later worked for the N&W in Ohio and an operator, eventually becoming a fireman before moving to the Pacific Northwest in the 1970's. He hired out on the SP, worked freight an passenger service for Amtrak, and has retired from the UP, all the while being heavily involved with the 4449 organization. When he restored the PA it was only natural for him to restore it to an NKP appearance, which took the better part of 2 decades to complete. The engine traveled to Spencer, NC in 2014 for the "Streamliners at Spencer" event featuring a plethora of locomotives from that era. Now in his 80's, it was announced in March 2023 that he had sold the engine to GVT after years of talks. The engine will be put into excursion service by GVT and will pull excursions in Northeastern Pennsylvanian, including former D&H track the engine ran in revenue service. Assigned "DL 190" for movement to GVT's Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad in Pennsylvania, it retains its Nickel Plate Road paint scheme. The real 190 was built in March 1948 and carried builder number 75457. For what was regarded as one of the most beautiful locomotive designs ever built, not many of these were preserved, and half of those units suffered what had been a grim fate for decades. When I retired, they all asked me, "How did you defeat Imposition?" Well, the main difficulty in fighting Imposition was his invulnerability. You could beat on him all day with a crowbar, and all you'd get would be tired. Combined with his ability to be a literal and proverbial immovable object, you had a real mess of trouble. He had to actively concentrate to remain immovable, but wrecking balls couldn't even bruise him. Extreme temperatures weren't effective either. But he did have that famous tendency towards monologuing. Here's the thing, though; the more I fought him, the more curious I got. What was the point? Why was he always so chatty? So this one time, he'd hatched this surprisingly subtle scheme where he'd infiltrate an armored car en route to the bank, access the vault when they brought in the money, and then simply wheel it right back out along with as much extra he could pack into the back of the truck. Unluckily for him, I was doing some banking that day, at that bank, and as soon as the alarms sounded I slipped in the back real quick to foil whoever was robbing the place.
See, I'm slick, real slick, after all, I'm about the slickest, but he managed to get the drop on me by accident, and when I came to, it was inside the vault, cuffed to a cart of money and laid out with a wicked headache. He was holding the vault door shut with one hand, rambling away. So, to buy for time, I just sat and drank it on in. I mean, they weren't getting the vault open anytime soon; they're kinda hard to break into, after all. After a few minutes, I'd kinda picked up a bit, so I started asking questions. Each set of questions sent him down another tangent. So I just kept asking questions, and eventually, he started telling me all sorts of things. Stuff about his parents, things about his high school years, how cool he thought that painting of Washington crossing the Delaware was... Anyways, he just kept talking and laid out his whole life story, his hopes, his dreams, his regrets, and eventually, his goals.
So here's the thing: we all knew Imposition was a villain because he was constantly trying to pull off crimes for cash, getting caught committing said crimes, and then breaking loose at various points during his journey through the criminal justice system. It's kind of hard to transport a prisoner who can simply cease moving while the vehicle continues moving. Hard to try a case when the defendant can simply stay in place where he likes, when he likes. And he was a shoe-in for escapes, too. Who doesn't like having someone bulletproof between them and their jailors?
But back to what I was saying, no one really bothered to ask what he needed the cash for. Imposition was young, brash, and impervious, and he had a head full of ideas about right and wrong. He styled himself something of a Robin Hood, but he also had... personal reasons. Country like this, the hospital costs an arm and a leg, literally. It wasn't an easy process, and it wasn't cheap, and it took a lot of politicking and horse trading and a few twisted arms, but we pulled off a major reform, and improved the lives of so many people...
So I'd say, I didn't actually defeat Imposition. I helped him. Now, I'm enjoying my retirement, and Rock Solid is still making the headlines. I still think Imposition was a great name, but I can understand wanting a fresh start. Now get, my soaps are about to start!
