Happy birthday Gilbert Baker!
Born on 2 June 1951, in Chanute, Kansas, Gilbert Baker was instrumental in the creation of the rainbow flag, now an internationally recognised symbol of the queer community.
In 1978, openly-gay politician Harvey Milk asked Gilbert to design a symbol for that year's pride celebrations in San Francisco. Gilbert chose the rainbow as a symbol that was beautiful, diverse, and natural.
Gilbert, along with other artists and volunteers, created the first rainbow flags by hand, dyeing the fabric in huge rubbish bins, and then rinsing it out late at night at a local laundromat.
The rainbow flag was first flown as a symbol of the queer community at San Francisco Pride on 25 June 1978.

On Thursday the 26th I got word my little brother, 47 years old had passed away in a hospital in Tulsa Oklahoma. Soon after I was on the road from New Mexico to Chanute KS where he would be laid to rest. His ashes wouldn’t be available for another week but a ceremony was planned regardless.
Chanute in my mind is a nightmare. As a queer kid it didn’t hold much comfort me but it had to be faced my dad met me there on the 27th, and with little plans we set out to lay this all to rest. The vast majority of our family on that said isn’t a fan of either is us, but that matters none.
This morning we set out in a dense fog and found my grandmothers old house. My bother, sister, and mother all had lived there with my grandparents at different points in time. Now the five of them are all laid to rest a separately in time but together in spirit.
We then drove to the nearby Santa Fe Lake where I, my father and step mother said our peace and goodbyes. A single white feather of a lone seagull drifted across the water as we spoke and soon after my father’s story of seagulls and my brother followed.
The city I so loathed seemed to have masked itself for the moment if only to allow me to disassociate from the location and be in the moment, and I obliged without hesitation. It was its own type of beauty and I am thankful.
Afterwards we drove out to my other grandparents old farm, also pictured. A red shed still stood from my childhood. That which used to be a cabin. Fresh chopped wood piled nearby so its current residents are still utilizing this old part time homestead.
The formal ceremony for my bother will be on Tuesday but I will not be in attendance. I need to get back home come Monday. I do feel at ease though. I got to say goodbye the way I’d like to, along side of my dad, lacking of other external distractions and sadness. This felt right for me.
I feel content and I hope my brother does too. He’ll still have all his other family and friends to watch over on Tuesday and that seems equally as fitting that I won’t be there, as we were not included in any plans being made.
This is likely the last time I’ll see this country side. It’s served its purpose and I’m grateful I made the trip and got to spend this time with my dad and say goodbye.
Rest in peace Daniel Ray Hurd (1977 - 2024)

The first unit, the 99th Pursuit Squadron, was activated at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois on March 19, 1941, nine months before the United States officially entered World War II.
Over the past seven decades, the exploits of the Tuskegee Airmen have been celebrated, occasionally mythologized and used as a recent reminder of the patriotism and heroism of African Americans in times of national crisis. Mounting pressure by black leaders and the black press to increase their presence in all branches of military service eventually persuaded a reluctant War Department to allow for the training of blacks as fighter pilots (initially no training for bomber crews) at an isolated field at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, thus preempting contact with white trainees.
The legal authority to form a black combat flying unit sprang from Public Law 18, enacted in 1939, which directed the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to allow for the establishment of training programs for “Negro pilots” at designated locations, most notably Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) and a revised Selective Service Act in 1940 that effectively ended discrimination in the recruiting of men for the armed forces. Despite the strictures of brutal and demeaning segregation in the nation’s military and the actions of a few of its white commanders to retard their efforts, 992 African American flight cadets completed the Army Air Corps course between July 19, 1941, and the end of World War II including many who had originally been assigned to the old Buffalo Soldier units, the 9th and 10th cavalries, and the 24th and 25th infantries. Also, because they were a segregated unit, supporting personnel who were black–bombardiers, navigators, mechanics, and instructors—also had to be trained and they too are considered Tuskegee Airmen who kept the pilots aloft.
Graduation of the first five pilots who received their wings took place on March 7, 1942, at the Tuskegee Army Air Field. Roughly 450 men joined the 99th Pursuit Squadron, initially led by whites but later ably commanded by then Capt. Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. also took charge of the all-black 477th Bombardment Group in 1945.

1970s: The F-105 and Reserve 508th Tactical Fighter Group at Hill AFB
May 21, 2020
HILL AIR FORCE BASE, Utah --
Editor's note: This feature is part of a Hill Air Force Base 80th anniversary series. These articles will feature the base’s historical innovations and achievements, and will highlight mission platforms that have been operated and supported throughout the decades.
During the 1970s, several Hill Air Force Base tenant organizations made various changes. Formerly assigned to the 452nd Tactical Airlift Wing, the Air Force Reserve 945th Military Airlift Group was reassigned to the 301st Tactical Fighter Wing on July 1, 1972. Resulting from this reassignment, the first of 18 newly assigned F-105 Thunderchief aircraft arrived at Hill AFB on September 24, 1972, for the 945th.
Shortly thereafter, on November 27, 1972, the last C-124 Globemaster assigned to the group departed Hill AFB. A few months later, the 945th inactivated. Concurrently, the AFRES constituted the 508th Tactical Fighter Group and activated the unit at Hill AFB. The new group received the F-105 aircraft which had briefly been assigned to the 945th. Three months later, AFRES inactivated the 508th on March 25, 1973, and in its place activated Detachment 508 of the 301 TFW in order to provide the wing’s organizational structure conformity with other units in the command. Subsequent requirements, however, necessitated the reactivation of the 508th Tactical Fighter Group on October 17, 1975, at which time Detachment 508, 301 TFW, inactivated.
On October 10, 1978, AFRES activated the 405th Combat Logistics Support Squadron at Hill AFB and assigned the unit to the 508 TFG. Prior to this, on October 1, 1977, the 508th lost three of its assigned squadrons: the 7th Supply Squadron, Mobile; the 7th Maintenance Squadron, Mobile; and the 5th Augmentation Squadron, Wendover Auxiliary Field.
The AFRES inactivated the 508th Tactical Fighter Group at Hill AFB on October 1, 1982, concurrently activating the 419th Tactical Fighter Wing. Despite the fact that the 419th Fighter Wing’s 466th Tactical Fighter Squadron continued to fly the F-105 until March 1984, the 508 TFG was the last unit assigned the F-105. In June 1983, the 419th TFW, assigned the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, began retiring the F-105s it inherited from the 508th TFG upon the unit’s inactivation.
Shortly before beginning this process, the 466th TFS flew a 24-ship “diamonds on diamonds” formation with the F-105 as a salute to the aircraft’s many contributions. The F-105 flew and fought in the skies of Southeast Asia during the conflict in Vietnam. On February 25, 1984, F-105 combat veterans reunited at Hill AFB and conducted the final F-105 missing man formation.
During this ceremony they dedicated aircraft 62-4347, the F-105 with the most air time, as a monument to those who served with F-105s and especially those who gave their lives while doing so. The last F-105 (aircraft 62-8287, an F model) departed Hill AFB on March 10, 1984, for Chanute AFB, Illinois, where it was put on display.

[Timlan’s Tale, Chapter 4: Return, Part 4 - In the Shadows]
Timlan and their companions head on toward the palace to present the slippers and a report on Lydia’s location. They can just see the towers in the distance when they notice a small group trading something in the shadows of a side alley.
An elf in rich robes sees them come into view, grabs a small package from a hooded figure, and runs off down the alley, hissing, “There can be no witnesses!” The hooded figure stuffs away a pouch and throws a dagger at Cervoj.
With an attack of 23, the dagger slices his shoulder for 5 damage. Our party turns to defend themselves against three darklings. Watcher fires his shortbow at the leader. With an attack of 15, he does 1 point of damage and turns invisible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Timlan attempts to cast Witch Bolt at the leader, but the crackling beam hits the hedge behind him. Cursing under their breath, they run back a bit to take some cover along the hedge.
Tumblr media
The lead darkling runs up and stabs Cervoj with an attack roll of 17 and 5 damage again. The other two move so they can throw daggers. With a 17 and 7, one hits Cervoj for 7 damage and the other misses Aspen.

Timema shows herself to cast Confusion on the three darklings and then zips over to hide in the hedge. All three darklings pause for a moment, but two seem to shake off the effects of the spell. Worried, Aspen casts Barkskin on himself.

With an attack of 19, Cervoj slices at the darkling before him for 7 damage. Watcher rolls a 23 and hits the lead darkling with another arrow for 1 damage. Timlan steps out, fires an Eldritch Blast that misses, and steps back into the hedge.

The darkling leader stabs at Cervoj again, but with an attack of 12, the dagger is stopped by his armor. The confused darkling flanks her leader and attacks. With a 16 and 9, she literally stabs him in the back for 12 damage.
