Am enjoying my stay in Kyiv although the initially balmy weather has had an October Revolution, changing into to something more like what I was expecting in Eastern Europe. I guess almost all the buildings were destroyed in the War, so what remains is a mixture of Soviet-style blocks and wedding cakes and reconstructed classical buildings in vivid Mediterranean colours. Big boulevards and spacious traffic and not too many cars, yet.

On the first day, we bought tickets for a performance of Tosca in the Opera House and a concert featuring Liszt and the Hungarian ambassador in the Philharmonic concert hall. Both were beautiful buildings. As Stalin said: the People have earned their Corinthian columns. And the performances were good, although the tenor in Tosca seemed a bit weak to me.

We've done our fair share of conventional sightseeing: St Sophia's Cathedral (the only building to survive the Mongol invasion - no much Divine Wind intervention here), St Michael's Monastery, All Souls ' (?) Monastery with the famous caves and Independence Square.

Most of the above was in walking distance but the Metro system was a tourist experience in itself. Presumably built under Stalin, it has ressemblances to that in Moscow, but i suspect that much of the original Soviet artwork has been whitewashed and not yet replaced with anything better. It is certainly cavernous, with deepest stations and longest escalators in the World. And it's certainly cheap. 5 Grumpies (or whatever the local currency is called) or 14 pence per ride. Although not as free as the London public transport is to an old codger like me.

Happy with the food and drink so far, both cheap and relatively healthy as I have mostly avoided the meat. Menus in Ukrainian are a bit intimidating so places which are self-service or canteen style or which have an English language menu are preferred until I get more confident. Most things went well until Amigo was shoved away from staring at a private function by a private security goon.

The hostel in Kyiv is pretty ok, although the friendliness of the staff and fellow guests can vary from hour to hour. Had interesting chats about the Ukraine and its politics and language with a French teacher of English who had been temporarily thrown out of his apartment by his Ukrainian wife. I do seem to hear a lot of Russian spoken, but perhaps that's because it's the default langage in which Ukrainians address foreigners.

Relaxed in the top floor in the chill-out zone of the GUM Department Store after a day in which Amigo found out that there are no Citibank ATMs in the Ukraine and the famous Bessarabian Market was selling only expensive stuff like caviar and meats. But tomorrow is another day.
