(Explore) Do you have any headcanons for Voice of the Cheated?
♡. ask game
anon dearie ilysm i'm sorry it's been 2 whole months </3 i immediately began typing this post out as soon as i received it, but then not only did i forget to finish it, but practically all of the headcanons i wrote had to be trashed because they related to cheated's role but he is no longer a pirate!!! buddy got his costume changed and i am not telling you what it is ♡♡
but yes yes i have a couple headcanons! in no particular order:
01. my cheated has a tail for Reasons™ and it is a great source of misfortune of him. he already has a lousy poker face, but even if he manages to keep it together, anyone can easily intuit how he's feeling from its swaying or thumping. not to mention how often people step on it (most accidentally, cold and opportunist not accidentally)
02. my voice's "true" form are mirror shards while their physical bodies are something akin to homuculi/puppets. if harmed beyond a certain threshold then the affected body part will shatter completely rather than simply bleed out. normally, if the shard is healthy, then reverting back to shard form will reverse the injury, but cheated's shard is so ridiculously pure that shattered parts will mend on their own! even when he fully shatters, which is relatively easy for him to do, it only takes a half-hour to recover, as opposed to the days or weeks that others may need.
this is also a great source of misfortune for him ♡ according to razor this makes him the perfect little pin-cushion. the glass shattering makes such a pretty, addictive noise and then woo he's right back to do it again. sure, it's fun to battle stubborn, but it takes him forever to shatter, and then the cooldown can take a month. scam! rip-off! her own little guy is the way better deal!
03. speaking of glass shards: cheated and flinching are brother and sister! all of the voices came from the same mirror, but cheated's shard cracked twice, first forming him and then flinching. while the demo voices remained dormant throughout the game, most of cheated's personality is unconsciously founded in complementing and protecting his sister. whereas flinching would hesitate to shoot a gun, cheated would snatch it from her grasp to fire immediately -- and then she watches in horror as the bullet ricochets off a pipe and hits him square in the knee. chichi twins ♡♡
04. cheated is a stiff in that he doesn't drink or smoke (his suffering will be done raw, thank you), but he absolutely adores gambling. he will swear up and down that he can stop at any time, and he doesn't even like it that much, yet he'll make a beeline for the nearest slot machine and have to be wrestled out of the chair. please, he can't just leave now, he's already sunk so much money into this, please just one more pull--
05. contrary to his appearance (and princess), cheated likes cute things! he's a bit shy about expressing his interest in coquette stuff like ribbons and makeup, but he's very open about caring for the innocent and helpless. the type to leave food out for strays and tries (keyword: tries) not to swear infront of kids. would love for him to team up with damsel for game night.
(kills me that he wouldn't want to wear "girl stuff" since he thinks the other voices pull it off better. everytime i draw cheated i think he would make for such a beautiful woman. i need opportunist to invite him to a drag bar and change his life.)
since it's tangentially connected, i'm ending this off with my favorite headcanon: cheated adores sharks and sleeps with a big shark plush he won at a carnival, whom he has named cap'n crunch ♡

TOUHOU 20 DEMO
The info I gathered to make this post comes from my own playthrough of the demo. Translations rely half on my knowledge of Japanese (which is limited) and half on using translators.
I will stick to only one route of the four available per character to minimize spoilers. I will also only discuss spellcards from easy mode for the same reason.
THE INCIDENT
It seems like the main issue is a time loop that no one can figure out, repeating the same day all over Gensokyo. Reimu and Marisa find strange stones with the essence of anomaly / aberrant that can change the status of the world. This sounds pretty dangerous!
They're led to the sanctuary at the foot of the mountain, which is protected by a barrier that these stones can break. (It sounds very similar to the power stones and the Hakurei Barrier during ULiL, doesn't it?)
THE GAMEPLAY
There are four slots to choose: main story stone, narrow shot stone, wide shot stone, and assistant. The stones you can choose are eight, and they seem to be paired (i.e. if you use "creature red" or "scarlet devil" on the story option, you get the same plotline).
The stones are: scarlet devil & creature red, snow blossom & blue season, imperishable moon & yellow subterranean, beast hardness & shintoism wind.
There is also a common magic stone that is the default when you're not equipping anything.
In a similar manner, during the stages there will be wonder stones appearing as enemies, either red, blue, yellow, or green (much like the pairs mentioned above). When shot down, they release power items, point items, and stone items that when filling the gauge will give you a boost with various effects.
For example, the scarlet boost resembles the wolf spirit from WBaWC, and the imperishable boost clears the screen entirely when over.
So, in a way, it's a very entertaining mix between the UFO mechanic and the beast spirit mechanic (apart from the shot type differences that the stones already give you, which in itself is similar to the sub-seasons of HSiFS).
It's definitely interesting to see themes of scarlet, snow, and moon appearing, as though we're relying on the essence of previous incidents. This is quite relevant considering we have seen this idea teased in Cheating Detective Satori as well as Whispered Oracle of Hakurei Shrine.
(If anyone has an idea as to what the beast & shinto could refer to, please feel free to chime in.)
THE STAGES AND CHARACTERS
Stage 1 - Chirizuka Ubame, King of the Yamanba. We find her distressed about being unable to enter the sanctuary. Her spellcards include Dust Sign "Cosmic Dust," Dust Sign "Karabitsu Gaeshi," and Dust Sign "Dust Habitat."
It seems Karabitsu Gaeshi refers to a fighting move (flipping karabitsu - a type of chest) but I wonder if it can be connected to youkai like a makura gaeshi (who are known to flip pillows).
Stage 2 - Houju Chimi, some manner of sealed ancient beast who has lived in the sanctuary for a long time. She says that the yamanba and monkeys have already fled, scared about whatever is going on, but that this incident (i.e. the sanctuary sealing itself) is a natural phenomenon that happens every so often, just never before in the eyes of the yamanba. She points us to an underground altar.
Her spellcards include Charm "Unruly Spirit of the Stream," Charm "Haunting Spirit of the Forest," and Talisman "Spirit of the Raging Mountains." Her danmaku certainly has a very distinct feeling, much as her design, which matches her dialogue about being a very old and unknown youkai.
(It also reminds me of Nue's status as a nue - and well, her name is Houju. This, alongside the distinct danmaku and elemental themes, make me wonder if she will pull a Kogasa and be the EX midboss.)
Stage 3 - Michigami Nareko, a dosojin who seems to be pretending to be a sphinx. It fits, since the underground altar is a pyramid. She does use the classic sphinx riddle about the three-legged beast.
Here we begin to have divergence in the routes. Reimu answers a human, to which Nareko says she's wrong and it should be something like a chimera. Marisa answers a deep-sea starfish, to which Nareko reacts indignant and says it's clearly a human. Perhaps any answer is wrong.
When beaten, she explains that she's not preventing anyone from entering the pyramid, but rather keeping those inside from escaping. She also points us to a different entrance depending on which story stone we have - the southern entrance for the scarlet route, in this case.
I would dare say that this implies a much larger divergence in stage 4. We know stage 4 bosses tend to have differences between routes (think Patchouli and Satori having specific spellcards per route) and it wouldn't be so unthinkable to expect entirely separate bosses, much like the Prismrivers and the Tsukumos.
Her spellcards include Mysterious Sign "Pyramidal Labyrinth," Blocking Sign "Logical Wall," Mysterious Sign "Ancient Trap," and Golden Sign "The Golden Tower of Bullet Barrage."
THE MUSIC
It's very distinct. Of course, every game has something unique, but this time there is something different - I would liken it to ZUN's own words about Dateless Bar "Old Adam" and Taboo Japan Disentanglement being rather musically complex and with quite the unusual style.
The tracks in the game are described to be melancholic and exotic, which you can certainly hear. Specifically, the stage 3 theme (which happens to be my favorite in the entire demo) is quoted as being a bit adventurous, since that's what Reimu and Marisa are doing right now - adventuring!
FINAL THOUGHTS
I am definitely excited for the full release of the game! And I am charmed both by the plot and the mechanics chosen for this one. It had a tall bar to pass considering the replayability of Unconnected Marketeers thanks to the card collection; to me, it looks like it will be just as fun to replay this one.
Now, there were jokes floating around about these stones and the Five Magic Stones from SoEW. It wasn't entirely wrong, in the sense that this incident and these wonder stones seem pretty worrying (and possibly dangerous) - so here's one last joke about Mima's return in Fossilized Wonders.

The silly perriferals are back?? We got you back.. Wii Speak.. Even showing it off during Mario Party? That really is crazy.. Switch 2 Streaming might be much more easy to set up, I have to deal with a lot of delay normally and syncing things..
New Experience?? Orthello.. Game Share?? DOWNLOAD PLAY?? ONLINE?? This also.. Changes everything… The console has a better display? It isn't 4k, but 1080p120fps?? Nintendo doing FPS that high?? Magnets, we were expecting that!! No more having to worry!! Mouse Controls!! We also knew that!! What if the built in Mic is better then my own Mic… 3D Audio?? I never used the kickstand much on my Switch, because it was that like.. flimsy little thing.. USB C slots!! MORE STORAGE!! NEW DOCK WITH 4K?? I guess it is 4K…No.. Same Switch Menus.. Fan.. Vital.. This kinda reminds me of that one Playstation 2 game with the camera you had to buy.. currently it escapes my mind.. Mouse Controls.. Oh… Upgrades aren't free… But this also means Mario Party probably won't be getting a new game for a while.. Legend of Zelda without the frame drops!! OH!! This is also kinda like.. Upgrades are Deluxe versions of games!! Seriously.. Maps for your Zeldas.. Sharing stuff is handy though!! NEW KIRBY STUFF?? Metroid you haven't even released yet… Mouse Controls supported?? Capcom showing off Street Fighter 6, the Download Play thing will be nice!! Mecha game.. That voice acting… Split Fiction makes sense because of the Game sharing thing!! Launch Title.. E A SPORTS.. With the Mouse Controls?? banana.. Is this guy's eye.. Golden? They've been keeping these 3rd party announcements really short!! Bravely Default.. Wasn't that from the 3DS?? Yakuza on da Switch.. And so many of these being launch titles.. Nintendo Collab game?? Oh it is Zelda stuff.. Oh no.. The evil beans? But you can play as Zelda.. That's nice!! Nevermind it is Age of Calamity 2.. I don't really like that game because of Nintendo doing a stream of it with Pikmin 3 Deluxe being shown first, and the people in the chat were being really rude to Pikmin..
Switch Online transfers over!! Expansion Pack --- GAMECUBE!!! My friend was right in a way.. Nintendo Classics.. Wind Waker ""HD""!! But how will the Analog Controller work.. Soul Calibur.. The one with Link.. F-ZERO GX!! The Amazing Cutscenes.. 4 Player support!! You can change..--- AMAZING LINE UP IN THE FUTURE?? Chibi Robo will be back.. GAMECUBE CONTROLLER IS ALSO BACK?? I kinda have to buy that one.. Right? And if that GameCube Controller is Bluetooth.. That means a lot for playing games in general..
toby fox.. delgabone chapters 3 and 4.. in da Switch 2 trailer.. But I probably won't be playing it on Switch 2, I would play it my lappy!! So Switch 2 day is Delgabone day.. Borderlands 4.. I'm still kinda worried about it.. CIV 7.. I heard that one wasn't as good.. But the mouse controls might be more playable!! WWE2K!! Jerma Rumble on da Switch.. My feed got stuck on that "Stuck on an Island Game"… Tragic.. "Switching 2" the proper upload.. Which I managed to do easily without spoilers!! Enter the Gungeon 2.. Perhaps Isaac would be nice (although no mods would be rough) Astroneer is a game I've seen pretty much only in game showcase things like this.. And it was a sequel.. The Cyberpunk.. From Fortnites.. The Final Fantsy 7 "Remake".. Switch 2 is getting a lot of games on Launch.. Silksong, just having it for a second in the Switch 2 trailer like Deltarune.. Nintendo is so powerful… Baby Simulator?? Puyos and Rune Factory!! I feel a bit bad for Fast Fusion.. FORTNITE!!! It is RIDGE RACER!! Human Fall Flat 2.. I bought that for my Switch 1, but I never ended up playing it, because I already had it on PC… The Final.. Third Party game.. Sleepyhead.. A New From Software game.. These games aren't really my style.. Jetspack.. It's kinda rough having a long trailer for a game you don't really care much about..
I'm free from 3rd Party!! KIRBY?? No.. These graphics are too Smash Bros… WAIT.. AIR RIDE 2???? You can't just announce a sequel to a cult classic!! BULK STAR!! Kirby.. AIR RIDERS?? OH SERIOUSLY.. THE SMASH GUY WAS WORKING ON IT.. The guy's secret game.. The finale.. (true) Ever Oasis 2? Donkey Kong?? It is DONKEY KONG.. They are using that new style for him too!! 3D as well.. and it.. That TERRAIN DEFORMATION?? It is like.. DK64.. 2?? (DK65?) Seriously.. The Classic style?? So Expressive!! Donkey Kong.. Bananza… Already feels much different then your 3D Marios!! Quick Recap!! Oh no.. Do I get the bundle with Mario Kart… Digitally.. Well.. At least I have that Mario Kart Direct to look forward to later this month!! I don't know if I should watch the Treehouse, because it might be better to go into the game with pure information.. And I will probably hear about things from the Treehouse from friends anyway!!
That was a pretty good Direct!! I won't say it was as good as that original Switch 1 Presentation all the way back in 2017, but it is still quite good!!
I think I am most excited for Mario Kart, GameCube Nintendo Classics, Deltarune (On PC), and the Mario Party Upgrade!! Oh!! Kirby Air Riders as well!! But I don't know if I would be able to get all of them instantly!!

Right now there's a week of full game demos for Vampire Survivors, A Little To The Left, and Cursed To Golf on Nintendo Switch Online.
I played through maybe fifteen levels of A Little To The Left and I really like it. It's frustrating but satisfying. You're rewarded for experimenting and coming at a problem in multiple ways. And despite the cold way it has of never telling you the rules, it makes it easy to cheat, and the atmosphere is cozy, almost demanding you complete it with family and friends. Sometimes it's a little hard to get the items you're moving to lock into their slots or to select the right item in a pile, but this only made a level difficult to complete once so far.
Vampire Survivors of course I've seen from front to back on desktop, and I can recommend it as a time killer you play while engaging with something else, but not something you marathon on your own. It eats up so much time and has such simple game play. At the same time, there are so many different characters and ways to play the game on offer, and a charming array of secrets to uncover over time.
Cursed To Goth I just bought on desktop. The concept compels me but I'm not sure how good the gameplay will feel. I don't know why I'm blogging about video games when that was the aspect of Cohost I liked the least, but hey, free games on the Switch.

I feel so fucking old-
Me (born in 2005) just spent 20 minutes talking to my little sister (born in 2016) about the way games used to be packaged. I was reorganizing my room and she was helping me by alphabetizing my game collection for me while I moved the heavy stuff. she asked me why the Xbox 360 games looked different than my PS4 games, and why some of the Xbox 360 games looked different than the others. so I stopped and explained how game cases used to be the same size as DVD cases, and how preowned games work. then she asked about why some of the cases had prongs on the inside, so I told her how games used to come with things like information booklets, stickers, or posters. the only case I could find at the time with a book still in it was Crash of the Titans, which for the uninformed has a promo for The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night printed on the back. she asked why they'd advertise a rival game series, and I told her about how Naughty Dog and Insomniac used to hide demos of each other's games behind cheat codes.
it was at this point that I'd completely lost her, and I realized how long it'd been since I played a game where you had to put in a cheat code to unlock something. the last time I had to put in any sort of secret code was in 2020 when I got Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled and had to put in the same code as the original to unlock Penta Penguin, and before that, there was the code hidden in the booklet for Viva Pinata Party Animals (which I could never get to work). thinking about it makes me miss when that sort of stuff was common. I remember digging through my grandfather's stuff and finding printed screenshots from a gaming website with cheat codes for Crash 2 and 3, and thinking that was the coolest thing ever. or the excitement of the ride home from GameStop, as I'd tear the packaging off the case and read the info booklet, super excited to sit down with my grandfather and play together. but now, cheat codes don't seem to exist, and if they did people rip the files from a game on launch and find all the hidden shit anyways. I don't even think game cases come with the paper insert slot anymore, it's just flat on the inside.

Solid Advice About Video Game Genres
Tumblr media
Do you remember opening your first video game system as a child? The anticipation of blowing up bad guys or virtually flying a plane? I do, and ever since, video games have been a fun hobby I've enjoyed in my spare time. Read on to find out how you can make gaming even more fun! https://vinnersjanser.com/
If you feel like you targeted your enemy spot on in a shooter and still missed, check what weapon you are using. Just like in real life, different weapons have different strengths and weaknesses. The weapon you are using may not have the short distance required or the weapon recoil is actually putting you slightly off target.
Try a demo of any game you are considering. The preview gives you some insight into the game. However, use caution when you're doing this. Don't download from sites you aren't familiar with; it could cause problems.
Illuminate the screen. Games that have settings in dark caves or buildings may look good, but can negatively effect your performance. Sometimes, bright colors will prevent you from seeing one of your opponents. If you are concerned about performance, reduce the brightness of your game. You will be able to better spot enemies and dropped items.
Save your game in a few files. Save your game into a new slot every so often. This will allow you to go back to different parts of the game. If you just keep saving as you go along, you won't have that option.
Playing video games is a great way to relax after a tough day at work or at school. Don't let a difficult level on a video game detract from this relaxing activity. Even the most experienced gamers sometime need a cheat code to help get through an exceptionally hard level. On the Internet, there are some great sites that provide cheat codes and strategy guides for various video games.
Video games are expensive, so rather than purchase one that you are unsure if you will like, rent them. Many services offer video games for rent for a certain price every month. By renting the video game first, you can test it out to see if you like it and the buy it if you do.
Stay at home and save money by playing video games with your friends. Many people use these games as a form of entertainment. Most games nowadays are available to play online with others. You can also chat with your friends while playing. Cut back on expenses by staying home and playing games.
Get in shape with video games. Many video games are now interactive and use your body movement. If you are getting bored with your exercise routine or don't have one yet, invest in a video game and get into shape. You will find yourself having a great time and getting in shape all at once.
Whether it's to occupy your free time or even something you do socially, video games are a great way to have fun affordably and harmlessly. You can relieve stress, feel accomplished and yet never leave your own home. With the tips you've read in this article, you can make your hobby better than ever!

SKATING AWAY ON THE FRETLINES OF A NEW DAY
I expect that there’s not a single electric bassist out there who can’t remember the first time they got to play a fretless bass. The difference in the sonic, visual, tactile, even the emotional experience - it leaves an impression on almost every player, whether they pursue the instrument or not. It’s really as close to the human voice as a bass is gonna get. It’s a truly seductive instrument; it’s even downright sexy. If Kathleen Turner played bass, I’d bet you a dollar she’d play a fretless.
The passion I developed for this instrument consumed me; once I discovered the fretless bass, fretted basses became boring, limiting, and they just felt plain weird. I had a fretless with me everywhere I went, every gig, every studio date, every rehearsal, every trip out of town. I even took it on dates; hey, you never know, right?
My introduction to the instrument was anything but unique: my high school band teacher suggested that I get an album called Heavy Weather by a jazz fusion band called Weather Report. Upon hearing the opening track, “Birdland”, I immediately recognized the sound I was hearing as a bass, but it sounded like what that bassist was doing was impossible! As far as I knew, without a whammy bar, there was no way to make those harmonic notes move and slide like that… so I brought the cassette to my teacher and played the intro for him, and asked him how they were doing that… he said, “Well, isn’t Jaco Pastorius the king of the fretless bass?”
I said, “King of the what? And who’s Jaco?”
What followed was a desperate attempt to get my hands on a fretless, even just to try it; none of the music stores around had them (living in a flyover state with the nearest metropolis over an hour away has its disadvantages), nobody I knew had one or even knew anybody else who had one, and when I finally found an upstart guitar company who made a stock affordable fretless, my folks wouldn’t get it for me because, not being terribly musically inclined, they couldn’t understand why I would need a 2nd bass.
At this point my teacher moved away, and I found a new teacher at the music store the next town over. And HE happened to have a fretless bass, and he let me borrow it that summer while he was on vacation. He dropped it off on his way out of town, pretty close to midnight. I took it down into the basement and pulled it out and was all set to plug it in when I heard, “DON’T TURN THAT AMPLIFIER ON, YOUR SISTER IS SLEEPING!”
Jeez, not anymore I bet, Mom. “Okay, okay, I won’t turn it on…”
But there I sat, on my barstool in the basement, bass strapped over my shoulder, just plucking the strings and sliding my fingers up and down the fingerboard. For a good half an hour. If I had smoked, I would have needed a cigarette afterwards. (I told you it was sexy.)
The next morning I realized how amazingly difficult it was to play that bass in tune. No lines, hardly any useful reference points. Very difficult to figure out where I was on the bass. But the tone it created, and my desire to make more tones like that, superseded any concern about how much practice this was going to take. I finally got my very own fretless - a Rickenbacker 4001 - and really began concentrating on mastering it (much to the detriment of my grades in school).
One of my favorite things about the fretless bass is that the tone really lends itself to lyrical melodies. The instrument takes on qualities of the human voice in the middle to upper registers. And I found myself learning horn parts to jazz tunes as well as more traditional bass lines like those from my favorite rock bands, which ended up serving me really well down the road.
Another favorite thing is the fact that many fretless basses used to be fretted basses, and the slots leftover from said frets being removed usually get filled in with material of a contrasting color to the surrounding wood. These are known as “fret lines”, and if used correctly, they can greatly enhance one’s ability to play notes in tune. They are also the subject of great controversy among we bass nerds, as there are those who feel it’s “cheating” somehow. For my money, I’m on Team Fretlines.
So I practiced and practiced, and even went to music school for a year after high school, and came home and kept practicing. One thing led to another, and less than a year after I returned, I found myself auditioning for a band in the area that had already been signed to a small local record label, and was getting some pretty big gigs around the country, and needed a true fretless bassist, as opposed to a bassist who trots out a fretless as a novelty on stage for one song. Unbelievably, I landed the gig. Of course the REAL work was just beginning, but I was blessed with a really fast and accurate ear, and they decided to give me a shot.
I soon realized how green I really was compared to true professional musicians, and I had to make a concerted effort to keep up, but after a lot of hard work, not only did I learn to behave as a pro, but I really sharpened my ear and its relationship to my fingers… I was developing the ability to create a phrase in my head, and play it on my first attempt. (This is a big deal for musicians; imagine not being able to say much to anyone unless you practice it over and over, and you’ll have an idea of how most musicians approach music.)
Several years later (same band), I get a call from my keyboard player, who wants me to come in to the band studio the next morning before rehearsal (we recorded at one band member’s house, and practiced at another’s in the same neighborhood) so I can put down a bass melody for a demo of a song he’s writing for the next album.
I show up with my bass at 8am (yeech!), and we start discussing the song: “I need you to double that melody with the cheesy synth-sax sound. The song goes through the same chord progression 3 times, and the melody occurs during the 1st and the 3rd pass.”
“Got it. What happens during the 2nd pass? Should I just take a solo over the chords?”
“No, I’m going to have my sax player friend replace the synth melody, and he’s going to do a solo, so just leave it empty.”
Plugged in, got signal and levels. I was taught the melody - beautiful, and not too complicated. Cool little chord progression with a twist. He hit the record button, and I played the melody I had just learned along with the track.
As I played the final note, preparing to rest for the next 32 bars, he dropped a bomb in my lap: “Why don’t you just throw down a solo here anyway.”
This was exactly ZERO WARNING, for a song I had heard for the first time about 10 minutes prior. It’s like being thrown an enormous water balloon at 94 mph and being expected to catch it.
That’s when my brain became my best friend.
My ears said to my brain: here’s what should come next. tell the fingers to make this happen…
My brain said: i can do that! fingers, do this, this, and this, and then this.
And the phrase I thought would sound great instantly came out of the studio speakers.
I didn’t have time to be shocked; my ears were ready for the next phrase, giving orders to my brain, which meted them out. This happened at least a dozen times in a row, right up until the melody was supposed to re-enter. And my ears, having connected a long series of invisible dots over the last 60 seconds or so, even properly glued the last phrase to the beginning of the melody. It was like a factory assembly line: my frontal cortex had an idea, my ears refined it and made sure it fit the chords, the frontal cortex figured out where those notes had to be on the fingerboard, the motor cortex took those plans and sent the signals down to my fingers. And each set of “orders” took less time than the blink of an eye.
I peeked up after I got to the “safe zone” of the out melody (which I already knew), and my keyboard player’s jaw was on his chest. I had to remind myself to concentrate; after all, I was still recording.
When I finished, he hit the stop button, turned to me, and said, “How did you do THAT??”
I didn’t quite understand, so he rewound the tape and played back what I had just recorded.
And I was treated to a sonic representation of the way my brain and ears operate when they’re in top form. I had no memory of playing the actual solo (and I still don’t); it was a true transcendental experience. Yet, as I listened back to the track, I KNEW every note I was about to hear as if I had been waiting my entire life to play that solo. It was like a perfectly written story that practically told itself. 25 years later and I still know it by heart; haven’t thought of a single thing I’d do different. It was a complete stream-of-consciousness expression, in fretless bass solo form. I’ve never had another experience like it since.
We both kind of sat there for a few seconds after the song ended, and he finally said, “I don’t care what anyone else says; for my money, this song’s done. Let’s show this to the band at rehearsal.”
So we took it along and played it for everyone else. Everyone loved it, but the bandleader said, “I know that was an amazing solo, but there’s already too much fretless on the upcoming record. I think the solo should be sax instead. I hope you understand.”
And I did understand, even if it was a bit of a bummer. Oh well, at least I had a copy of my solo on cassette tape for posterity.
Sax player showed up a few days later, on a day when I wasn’t there, to play the melody and do a solo, but there was a problem - he had been sent the same demo tape that I had, with my solo on it, and it was influencing his improv in a way that didn’t really suit the sax. He finally said, “I need to skip the solo. The melody is fine, no problem, but I keep veering off course during the solo because I hear the bass solo in my head so strongly.”
So the bandleader calls me and tells me what happened, and that he’s decided that HE will play an electric jazz guitar solo over the chord changes (he did this regularly in the group, and to great effect). Okay, great. Curious as to what I’ll hear in two days when it’s done.
Two days later I get another phone call: “I can’t do it. I keep playing stuff that works great on the guitar, and it fits the changes nicely, but the phrases just sound disconnected, I keep hearing your solo in my head, and I can’t seem to fix it. Would you mind if I transcribed your fretless solo and played it on the jazz guitar?”
“Feel free, it’d be an honor,” I said. Good thing FaceTime wasn’t a thing back then, because I’m sure I was smirking.
The next day I arrived at the studio to record another song for the new record, where I find the bandleader standing outside shaking his head.
“Did you finish the solo? How’d it go?”
“Yep. And I hate it.”
“What happened?”
“I spent over an hour last night transcribing your part. And I just spent another hour recording it. You know what it sounds like?”
I had an answer ready, but I wasn’t about to say it out loud if I didn’t have to. I figured I’d let him say it instead, which he did:
“It sounds like a bunch of great fretless bass licks, played on the wrong instrument. I think we should just use your original bass solo.”
Now that’s taking the long way around to come to the right decision.
When I look back on that moment, I find it amazing that I don’t remember coming up with the phrases, and I certainly don’t remember anything happening that pulled me out of that “mode” I was in; the solo all but wrote itself, and I was simply the conduit. But I remember my bandmate’s reaction.
Since then, I have tried to conjure that mojo dozens of times, with varying degrees of success, but never quite to that level. But it showed me what was possible within the realm of performance. All those scales and exercises and hours upon hours of practice were paid off in that one instance of musical epiphany and pure expression. It was enough to ensure I’ll die a happy man.
