Frank hears an odd sound in the Sanctum Sanctorum and thinks he'll be funny by teasing Strange about it.

Frank paused when he heard it. 

Now, there were a lot of odd sounds in the otherwise silent Sanctum Sanctorum, but they were usually the kinds of odd, isolated sounds one might associate with a haunting or a curse. This sounded like a cat. 

A happy, purring cat. 

Random clanking and quiet whispers, Frank can ignore. This? This he needed to investigate. 

“Strange, what is that?” he called over to the man cataloging some artifacts on the other side of the stairwell. 

“What is what?” Stephen called without looking over.

“You don’t hear that?”

“I’m fifty feet away from you, Frank,” Stephen said. “I don’t hear anything.”

“Then come over here.”

Stephen sighed, but obediently stopped what he was doing to walk all the way around until he could rest his chin on Frank’s shoulder. “What?”

Frank raised a hand to indicate Stephen should be quiet, and waited until the purring came back, loud and clear. 

“Oh, that?” Stephen waved a dismissive hand. “That’s nothing.”

“It doesn’t sound like nothing.”

“I don’t mean literally nothing,” Stephen said with some annoyance. He stepped back from Frank’s shoulder and walked around a pair of displays to a case full of smaller, assorted knick knacks, presumably of magical importance. “I just mean it’s not of any concern. This one doesn’t really do anything.” 

Frank watched as Stephen slid the back wall of the case open and lifted a necklace from its base. As he brought it out from under the glass, the purring gained volume, which was the only reason Frank believed the string of tarnished metal and inset stones was truly the source of it at all. “It just purrs.”

Stephen set the necklace delicately on top of the case. “Yes.”

“At random.”

Stephen sucked in a breath and held it between tight lips as he looked down at the softly purring object. The reluctance to explain was obvious when he said, “Not quite.”

That was too interesting to let go. Frank got out his metaphorical stick and poked the hornet’s nest. “What do you mean?”

Stephen stared determinedly down until finally clearing his throat and saying, with the air of someone who knew what was about to happen and that it wouldn’t be any good, “It only purrs when the people around it are,” and this he said with the tone of someone reciting from a textbook, “happy or excited.”

Frank glanced down at the purring necklace, then back up to Stephen. “Happy or excited.”

Stephen nodded. “Happy or excited,” he confirmed.

“You have a necklace,” Frank began, just to be sure, “that makes a pleased rumbling sound whenever the people who happen to be around it are… “happy”?” He didn’t make air quotes when he said it, but Frank was pretty sure Stephen knew they were there anyway. “Someone made this artifact with a very specific purpose in mind.” And Frank didn’t think he needed to spell out what that purpose was, either.

“You don’t know that,” Stephen objected. His voice had gone a little high. “The person who enchanted this could just… have really liked cats.”

Frank gave Stephen a knowing look, the kind that meant he didn’t believe Stephen at all. “Right. Liked.” 

Stephen tilted his head and pinned Frank with a stare of his own. The one that could mean anything from “don’t be gross, Frank” to “don’t shoot the burglars, Frank, the cops are already on their way and nobody needs the additional paperwork tonight.” Frank was pretty familiar with that stare.

Frank put up his hands. “I’m just saying.”

Stephen rolled his eyes. “I’m sure you are.”

With a shrug of his shoulders, Frank let both the point and his hands drop. “So why’s it purring now?”

Stephen’s lips pressed into a brief frown that told Frank he didn’t really know. “I guess you must be happy?”

Frank froze as soon as the words left Stephen’s mouth. The necklace reacted before Stephen was anywhere near it, so it had to be Frank that set it off, that was true. In light of the teasing Frank had just put Stephen through, however, the implications of that were a little…

Stephen must have noticed his hesitation, because his brows furrowed just before his eyes widened with startled realization. And now they were on the same page. 

Frank accepted the reality before him and decided to barrel right through. “I’m not sure happy is the word I would use.”

Stephen held his gaze for just a moment longer, then carefully placed the necklace back on its display stand and quietly shut the case. He straightened his spine with deliberate effort and the forced nonchalance was obvious in his voice when he said, “You have a minute, Frank? I’ve got something else I’d like to show you.”

This felt like a trap. Despite himself, Frank took the bait. “Oh?”

Stephen turned lightly on his heel and started leading the way. 

“In my bedroom,” he said.

Frank smirked. 

“Oh.”

So Sanzo is understandably irritated when the fairy he rescues from a five hundred year nap in some obscure rock on an even more obscure mountain doesn't just go on his way like Sanzo meant him to. No, the idiot (kind of) moves in, (kind of) invites his friends, and (kind of) makes a spectacle out of Sanzo and his formerly quiet life.
