Finally it was time for the ceremony to begin. The guests sat down (except for Piper and Cam who decided to stand up to kiss but anyway 🥴), and Hanh was walked down the aisle by her mom Toni, who was sappy but held it together as she walked with her daughter. Then Cece was escorted by her auntie Iseul. “Don’t cry auntie Is, cause then I’ll cry too and smudge my makeup.” Cece said to Iseul out of the corner of her mouth because Iseul’s eyes were bright and she kept blinking. “I’m trying not to, Cee. Seeing you grow up through the years and now walking you down the aisle is emotional as heck in a good way.” Cece blinked too. “I know, and I’m glad you’re here.” She said, and Iseul smiled and squeezed Cece’s arm* as they reached the wedding arch and Cece smiled back at her auntie before she headed to her seat.
The game wouldn't let Cece's dad be the officiant so I just had them exchange vows and rings and do the spousal kiss. Cece's dad, auntie, and grandma were super emotional and happy in the photo I took and it's sweet. 😊 “I can’t believe it, my nooboo is married.” Min Jun said to his mother in law, Sang-Hee. She smiled back at him. “I felt the same way when my Paenji married you. Of course I was saddened to have her leave me and her appa but I was happy she was with someone who loved and respected her.” She said, and Min Jun smiled.

• Chiang Wei-kuo
Chiang Wei-kuo (traditional Chinese: 蔣緯國; simplified Chinese: 蒋纬国) was an adopted son of Republic of China President Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang served in the Wehrmacht before fighting in the Second Sino-Japanese War and Chinese Civil War.
Born in Tokyo on October 6th, 1916 when Chiang Kai-shek and the KMT were exiled to Japan by the Beiyang Government, Chiang Wei-kuo was the biological son of Tai Chi-tao and a Japanese woman, Shigematsu Kaneko (重松金子). Chiang Wei-kuo previously discredited any such claims and insisted he was a biological son of Chiang Kai-shek until his later years, when he admitted that he was adopted. As one of two sons of Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Wei-kuo's name has a particular meaning as intended by his father. "Wei" literally means "parallel (of latitude)" while "kuo" means "nation"; in his brother's name, "Ching" literally means "longitude". The names are inspired by the references in Chinese classics such as the Guoyu, in which "to draw the longitudes and latitudes of the world" is used as a metaphor for a person with great abilities, especially in managing a country. Chiang moved to the Chiang ancestral home in Xikou Town of Fenghua in 1910. Wei-kuo later studied Economics at Soochow University.
With his sibling Chiang Ching-kuo being held as a virtual political hostage in the Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin having previously been a student studying in Moscow, Chiang sent Wei-kuo to Nazi Germany for a military education at the Kriegsschule in Munich. Here, he would learn the most up to date German military tactical doctrines, organization, and use of weaponry on the modern battlefield such as the German-inspired theory of the Maschinengewehr (Medium machine gun, at this time, the MG-34) led squad, incorporation of Air and Armored branches into infantry attack, etc. After completing this training, Wei-kuo completed specialized Alpine warfare training, thus earning him the coveted Gebirgsjäger Edelweiss sleeve insignia. Wei-kuo was promoted to Fahnenjunker, or Officer Candidate, and received a Schützenschnur lanyard. Wei-kuo commanded a Panzer unit during the 1938 Austrian Anschluss as a Fähnrich, or sergeant officer-candidate, leading a tank into that country; subsequently, he was promoted to Lieutenant of a Panzer unit awaiting to be sent into Poland. Before he was given the mobilization order, he was recalled to China.
Upon being recalled from Germany, Chiang Wei-kuo visited the United States as a distinguished guest of the US Army. He gave lectures detailing on German army organizations and tactics. Whilst in the northwest, Chiang Wei-kuo became acquainted with the local generals and organized an armour mechanized battalion to formally take part in the National Revolutionary Army. In addition, he spent some time in India studying tanks. There, Wei-kuo became a Major at 28, a Lieutenant Colonel at 29, a Colonel at 32 whilst in charge of a tank battalion, and later in Taiwan, a Major General. Chiang Wei-kuo was stationed at a garrison in Xi'an in 1941. Throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War he lead tank battalions. In 1944, he married Shih Chin-i (石靜宜), the daughter of Shih Feng-hsiang (石鳳翔), a textile tycoon from North West China. Shih died in 1953 during childbirth. Wei-kuo later established the Chingshin Elementary School (靜心小學) in Taipei to commemorate his late wife. After the war was over, communist and nationalist conflicts occurred which lead into the Chinese Civil War. During the Chinese Civil War, Chiang Wei-kuo employed tactics he had learned whilst studying in the German Wehrmacht. He was in charge of a M4 Sherman tank battalion during the Huaihai Campaign against Mao Zedong's troops, scoring some early victories. While it was not enough to win the campaign, he was able to pull back without significant problems. Like many troops and refugees of the Kuomintang, he retreated from Shanghai to Taiwan and moved his tank regiment to Taiwan, becoming a divisional strength regiment commander of the armoured corps stationed outside of Taipei.
Chiang Wei-kuo continued to hold senior positions in the Republic of China Armed Forces following the ROC retreat to Taiwan. In 1964, following the Hukou Incident and his subordinate Chao Chih-hwa's attempted coup d'état, Chiang Wei-kuo was punished and never held any real authority in the military again. In 1957, Chiang remarried, to Chiu Ru-hsüeh (丘如雪), also known as Chiu Ai-lun (邱愛倫), a daughter of Chinese and German parents. Chiu gave birth to Chiang's only son, Chiang Hsiao-kang, (蔣孝剛) in 1962. From 1964 onwards, Chiang Wei-kuo made preparations in establishing a school dedicated to teaching warfare strategy; such a school was established in 1969. He was also the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of China from 1968 to 1969. In 1975, Chiang Wei-kuo was further promoted to the position of general, and served as president of the Armed Forces University. In 1980, Chiang served as joint logistics commander in chief; then in 1986, he retired from the army and became National Security Council Secretary-General. In 1993, Chiang Wei-kuo was employed as the advisor of the president of the Republic of China. After Chiang Ching-kuo's death, Chiang was a political rival of native Taiwanese Lee Teng-hui, and he strongly opposed Lee's Taiwan localization movement. Chiang ran as vice-president with Taiwan Governor Lin Yang-kang in the 1990 ROC indirect presidential election. Lee ran as the KMT presidential candidate and defeated the Lin-Chiang ticket. In 1991, Chiang's housemaid, Li Hung-mei (李洪美, or 李嫂) was found dead in Chiang's estate in the Taipei City. The following police investigation discovered a stockpile of sixty guns on Chiang's estate. Chiang himself admitted the possibility of a link between the guns and his maid's death, which was later ruled a suicide by the police. The incident permanently tarnished Chiang Wei-kuo's name, at a time when the Chiang family was increasingly unpopular on Taiwan and even within the Nationalist Party.
In the early 1990s, Chiang Wei-kuo established an unofficial Spirit Relocation Committee (奉安移靈小組) to petition the Communist government to allow his adopted father Chiang Kai-shek and brother Chiang Ching-kuo to be interred in mainland China. His request was largely ignored by both the Nationalist and Communist governments, and he was persuaded to abandon the petition by his father's widow in November 1996. In 1994, a hospital was supposed to be named after him (蔣緯國醫療中心) in Sanchih, Taipei County (now New Taipei City), after an unnamed politician donated to Ruentex Financial Group (潤泰企業集團), whose founder was from Sanchih. Politicians questioned the motivation. In 1996, the Chiang home on military land was finally demolished by the order of the Taipei municipal government under Chen Shui-bian. Chiang Wei-kuo died at the age of 80, on September 22nd, 1997, from kidney failure. He had been experiencing falling blood pressure complicated by diabetes after a 10-month stay at Veteran's General Hospital, Taipei. He had wished to be buried in Suzhou on the mainland but was instead buried at Wuchih Mountain Military Cemetery.

A Touch of Zen (1971, Taiwan)
When Chinese director King Hu was writing the screenplay to his upcoming martial arts epic, he found himself disgusted with the mindless violence pervasive in the wuxia genre. Wuxia, for those unfamiliar with the term, is a genre of Chinese fiction involving martial arts during the times of Imperial China. Wuxia can also include elements of masculine chivalry, sometimes sorcery (though not in this film). King Hu’s A Touch of Zen is an unusual wuxia film – it is over three hours long, and no swords are drawn nor do fists fly until more than an hour has passed. Those facts about A Touch of Zen might alienate wuxia fans and frighten those who have never delved into Asian martial arts cinema. But what if I told you that A Touch of Zen is one of the greatest martial arts films of all time, with its first-hour nonviolent intrigue, enormous scope, heavily Buddhist themes, and among the most astonishing action choreography that movie audiences have ever witnessed?
For the first two hours, A Touch of Zen centers its plot on the oafish painter, Gu Sheng-tsai (Shih Chun). It is set sometime during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). Gu lives with his mother (Zhang Bing-yu) – who hounds her son into taking the civil service exam and finding a wife to continue the family line – in the charred remains of an abandoned imperial fort. It plays like a domestic comedy, if only briefly. A behatted stranger, who will later be identified as Ouyang Nian (Tien Peng) and is introduced in shadow as if this was an American Western, comes to town one day to have his portrait painted by Gu, but his unspoken objective is to capture a woman named Yang Hui-zhen (Hsu Feng) – a fugitive of the law and adroit in combat. Unbeknownst to Gu, Yang has moved into the house across from his mother’s and the two will become friends – although Gu’s mother would like her son to seal the deal already. Also in hiding and allied with Yang are generals Shi and Lu (Bai Ying and Xue Han, respectively).
As motivations are gradually revealed and as the corrupted eunuch’s forces converge upon the town and the fortress, our protagonists flee to the countryside and, in the final hour, the narrative focus shifts from Gu to Yang and General Shi. We are also introduced to a number of characters – most notably, the eunuch’s commander Xu Xian-chun (Han Ying-jie; who also serves as the film’s martial arts choreographer) and Buddhist Abbot Hui-yuan (Roy Chiao).
The opening shot of A Touch of Zen sees a spider moving towards its entangled prey. Spiderwebs are typically a thoughtless hallmark of horror films, but here they appear – mostly in scenes at the abandoned fortress – on occasion to suggest entrapment, the proximity of bloodshed. This applies not just to the protagonists, but those pursuing them. Despite the spectacular wide shots that appear after Gu, Yang, and General Shi find themselves in the wilderness, many of the interior shots in the opening half of A Touch of Zen feel cramped – even moreso at night and during the moments when Gu, Yang, and their allies attempt to trick the enemy reconnaissance into believing that the abandoned fortress is haunted. Notice how quickly the predators can become prey. Such is the confusion that imminent violence might cause.
If the violence found in A Touch of Zen is a result of Yang’s familial duties and sense of honor clashing with the rigid laws governing the eunuch’s lands, it is something that several characters – including Yang herself – are considering an escape from. Here enters Abbot Hui, who first appears in the town’s market with his fellow monks, walking past Gu’s establishment without talking to anyone. Only after the stranger, Ouyang Nian, has confronted Gu for the first time does Abbot Hui break from his wandering stroll. Abbot Hui will not appear again until much later after a violent battle, to help clean and tend to the deceased. In general, the Buddhist monks only make appearances in the film when violence is imminent or has just completed – serving as a sort of punctuation for the film. Unbounded by the earthly desires and allegiances that dictate the actions of all the other characters, Abbot Hui extols nonviolence, showing quarter to even those who threaten exceptional violence.
Does nonviolence work against those who do not respond to soothing, reasonable words? Current sociopolitical thinking might reject these notions outright In Buddhism – a religion dominated by principles, rather than rules – self-defense is, depending on who you ask, an ambiguous topic. But self-defense is largely believed to be permissible (excluding to-the-letter pacifists, but not to the extent of how certain Burmese Buddhist radicals have condoned violence against the Rohingya minority there), as long as it is not borne from hatred towards the attacker, but compassion for the defendant/s and the attacker. From the words of Vietnamese monk and peace activist Thích Nhất Hạnh, when asked about a hypothetical question in which he faced an attacker after a genocide in which he would be the last Buddhist on the planet:
It would be better to let him kill me. If there is any truth to Buddhism and the Dharma it will not disappear from the face of the earth, but will reappear when seekers of truth are ready to rediscover it. In killing I would be betraying and abandoning the very teachings I would be seeking to preserve. So it would be better to let him kill me and remain true to the spirit of the Dharma.
Though no such genocide appears in A Touch of Zen, Thích Nhất Hạnh’s illustration of Buddhism’s incompatibility towards much of the violence contained in A Touch of Zen. Separation from worldly matters and displaying trust and forgiveness for those who might wish one harm is key, and Abbot Hui abides by these principles. For many Westerners – especially those who have not studied or at least have a superficial understanding of Eastern religions – this might cause befuddlement and consternation in the closing third of the film when King Hu begins to feature the Buddhist monks more often. The final, open-ended scenes draw from Buddhist metaphysics and mysticism – capturing ascendance through selflessness.
Through the actions and words of Abbot Hui, we are better able to comprehend the suffering of Gu, to use one of a few possible examples. Unambitious and uninteresting though his life might have been prior to meeting Yang, Gu’s involvement with Yang and her allies sees him evolve from bumbling straggler to cold-blooded tactician when planning an ambush against the eunuch’s troops – as an aside, undesirable events occur any time after he sleeps with Yang. There, the idea of planning violence is shown as less mentally consequential than committing those acts. Committing violence – whether in self-defense, for “altruistic” purposes (is such a concept inherently contradictory?), or for other reasons – aligned with one’s compassion is a perilous predicament, as this behavior can all too easily transform into malevolence.
The protagonists depicted in A Touch of Zen are well-meaning, imperfect beings unable to release themselves from the shackles of chivalry, familial honor. That is what leads to their suffering from the hands of others, and from within.
For those without much experience in Asian martial arts films, let alone wuxia, A Touch of Zen starts roughly for its opening minutes. Cinematographer Hua hui-ying and editors King Hu (who had a history of performing many tasks other than directing in his movies) and Wing Chin-chen utilizing various swooping movements that do not appear to serve much purpose other than to make the motion-sensitive slightly queasy. After that inexplicable introduction, Hua, Hu, and Wing piece together an excellent collaborative effort. For cinematographer Hua – working with Eastmancolor and a glorious widescreen lens – his cameras are typically flat or glancing upward, utilizing swathes of open space to suggest danger, a higher consciousness/power, all to unsettle the viewer and keep our attention not just on the foreground. Shot partially at Taroko National Park in eastern Taiwan, there are nature shots in A Touch of Zen stupendous to behold; fans of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, Taiwan) will be awed by the scenery, and perhaps wondering if A Touch of Zen inspired the later film in any way (it certainly did, but more shortly). Hua’s camera can also barely capture combatants when running or jumping from ground to rooftops – because wuxia, kung fu, and other Chinese martial arts logic is like that, so just accept it – at full speed. The editing by Hu and Wing, sometimes only including a shot for the shortest of split-seconds, forces the viewer to pay the fullest attention, in fear of missing on a crucial detail of geometry, body positioning, or location during a furious swordfight.
The action would have been less exhilarating if choreographer and actor Han Ying-jie did not work on this film. Two extended set pieces are standouts: the final battle at the abandoned fortress in the dark of night and a free-flying bamboo forest battle that would later be recalled and reworked in Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. For those who have never seen A Touch of Zen – it is recommended that you have seen some other wuxia, kung fu, and other assorted martial arts films before this one – this movie contains some of the most arresting action imagery and gobsmackingly tense battles one can ever experience in this genre. Han’s choreography has stamped his unquestionable legacy into modern martial arts films from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
A Touch of Zen became a sensation of world cinema when released – winning a technical prize at the Cannes Film Festival – but was half-forgotten until Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came along at the turn of the century. Releases of the most recent restoration by the Masters of Cinema releases in the United Kingdom and the Criterion Collection in North America have allowed A Touch of Zen a global reach like never before.
Asian martial arts cinema – of the distant past, less distant past, and the present – has never been a specialty of mine (my father and many in my extended Vietnamese-American family have consumed much more). What separates A Touch of Zen from the dizzyingly large number of Asian martial arts films lies in something not often found in this genre. It has mastered matters elemental and physical, while commanding a dialogue with the spiritual.
My rating: 10/10
^ Based on my personal imdb rating. A Touch of Zen is the one hundred and forty-first film I have rated a ten on imdb.

Everything is (not) a competition
Prince of Tennis (2019 CDrama), Zhang Baiyang/Qiao Chen
Summary: Although they call themselves enemies, everyone knows Zhang Baiyang and Qiao Chen are really the best of rivals. The problem comes when they start to drag their rivalry into things that aren’t tennis or school. Then the problem is something else entirely.
Written for @sarah-yyy! Happy birthday! It’s a bit of a mess, but full of dumbass rivals to sort of boyfriends. I hope you like it!
------
“BAIYANG!”
Zhang Baiyang did not fear Qiao Chen. Not one bit. (And if anyone asked, he was only running as part of his quadrupled training regimine.) But Baiyang did know Qiao Chen’s obsession with his childhood crush from Yu Feng High School just slightly exceeded his passion for both tennis and stuffing his face with hamburgers. So it was only slightly justified to run after messing up Qiao Chen’s plans to meet with Xing Zi. Again. For the tenth time.
“Why do you want to meet with her so bad anyway?!” Baiyang called over his shoulder as he turned the corner. The sounds of footsteps matching his had not tapered off yet, so Baiyang continued running. “Everyone knows you don’t know how to talk to girls!”
“That’s bullshit! I’m great with talking to girls!” Qiao Chen’s voice was suddenly right by Baiyang’s ear and Baiyang, thankfully, did not flinch.
Baiyang continued running and Qiao Chen kept pace. “Then why is your Xing Zi always laughing at you?”
“Because I’m funny!”
“Your face is the most hilarious thing you have.”
“Thank- Hey!”
“Anyone can do better at wooing a girl than you.”
“Are you saying you’re better than me?!”
“I’m not you,” Baiyang said as they continued to run past the teacher’s office. Mu Siyang watched them run from the doorway as he was about to step out, opened his mouth, and then closed it and continued on his own way. “So I must be.”
“Prove it! Go ahead and tell me a line if you’re so great!” Qiao Chen pulled Baiyang to a stop as they reached a secluded spot on the high school grounds, the spot with the statues of three women. “Then I’ll use one of mine. Whoever tells the best one wins!”
Baiyang huffed and pulled his arm out of Qiao Chen’s grasp before leaning in. Qiao Chen found himself stepping back just a bit to find a pillar behind him. With Baiyang’s arm trapping him from another side, Qiao Chen raised an eyebrow but then startled when Baiyang used his free hand to tip his chin up.
“Have you eaten yet?” Although Baiyang’s voice was normally rough and grumpy, it suddenly carried a lightness, as if Baiyang was talking to something small and cute as opposed to Qiao Chen. “If you’re hungry, let’s go out for lunch.” Baiyang smiled just a bit and even that surprised Qiao Chen. It wasn’t as if Baiyang was ugly, everyone on the tennis team was considered handsome, but Baiyang’s expression was normally so terrifying that no student approached. But now, Baiyang’s smile was terrifying for another reason.
“Too handsome,” Qiao Chen murmured.
“What was that?” Baiyang grumbled.
“I said your line is so fake,” Qiao Chen shot back. Grabbing Baiyang’s shoulders and twisting, Qiao Chen pressed Baiyang against the pillar. “Are you tired? You’ve been running through my mind all day.” Qiao Chen finished with a wink. Baiyang mimed throwing up.
“So much cheese, I’ll become lactose intolerant.”
“Hey! That’s a classic line from the west!”
“So? It’d be more impressive if you said it in English like you’re supposed to.”
“Are you tired? Because you’ve been running through my mind all day.”
Baiyang and Qiao Chen whipped around to find Lu Xia strolling past, as if he hadn’t put their combined ability in English in the gutter. Lu Xia raised an eyebrow in acknowledgement before walking on.
“This damn junior…” Baiyang grumbled before pushing Qiao Chen off of him. “Oi! Lu Xia! Come practice with me today!”
“Sure, senior.”
“Hey! You just texted Xing Zi that I have to practice with you and now you’ll practice with Lu Xia?! Baiyang, you have no shame!”
Baiyang rolled his eyes. “I’m sparing her from an awful date and sparing you from losing so badly again during your next match.”
“What awful date?! I bet you’d scare your date away!”
Baiyang and Qiao Chen continued to growl in each other’s faces. Lu Xia looked between them and went back to drinking his grape Fanta. “It’s not tennis related, I don’t have to care,” he reminded himself as he walked on. “But maybe Captain should know.”
------
A long and grueling evening training session later, Qiao Chen pulled Baiyang out of the gym by the back of his shirt. Baiyang followed, only because he didn’t want to rip his uniform.
“What are you attempting to drag me for?” Qiao Chen felt his eye twitch at the emphasis on the word “attempting.” For as well as he could leap, it was true, Baiyang was the more muscular and thus heavier one between them. If he wasn’t complying by walking along, Qiao Chen wouldn’t have been able to move him one inch.
“Since you think I’d give Xing Zi an awful date, I’m going to prove you wrong!” Baiyang found himself shoved into a shower stall. “Now wash up. I refuse to sit next to you during a movie while you still stink of sweat.”
“Who said I want to go with you?”
“Are you admitting I’m already a good date?” Baiyang threw his sweaty shirt in Qiao Chen’s face in reply. Qiao Chen threw a bar of soap back. “We have early practice tomorrow morning. So shower quick.”
Baiyang didn’t have very high expectations for what Qiao Chen would consider a good date, even if there were particular formalities that would be required for at least a good first date. But when Qiao Chen began to pull on fake glasses and stick on a fake goatee, Baiyang figured he should say something.
“You’re taking me to the place you’re banned from because of your binge eating?”
“The food is good!” Qiao Chen protested as he finished applying the fake facial hair. “Plus if we both eat enough of our specials, it’s free!” Qiao Chen then adjusted his hair from his usual style. “It’s win/win for a date really.”
“So you would honestly think your Xing Zi could keep up with you?”
“Xing Zi? Eat like this? No no, I’d buy her meal properly.” Qiao Chen smiled. “And then I’d take her to a good movie and we’d whisper back and forth in the dark about the movie!”
“So why are you forcing me to eat like you just for a free meal?!”
“Are you saying you can’t eat as much as me?”
Baiyang frowned. “If you trained your muscles as well as you trained your stomach, you’d be as strong as I am.”
“It’s not a noooooo!”
Thirty minutes later, Qiao Chen walked out with a satisfied smile on his face while Baiyang stumbled out, using all his willpower to not clutch at his stomach.
“I’m impressed! You kept up pretty well!” Qiao Chen pat Baiyang on the back and Baiyang grit his teeth. “Now wasn’t this a romantic date?”
“This was hell. You’re better off just not dating if this is the best you can do.”
“Then let’s see you do any better!”
Baiyang glared at Qiao Chen. “Why should I?”
“If you don’t, it means I win.”
Baiyang grumbled to himself. “Tomorrow after practice. I’ll show you what a proper date is.”
A proper date by Baiyang’s standards turned out to be a walk (read as jog) around the park. Qiao Chen grumbled and whined the entire time, but Baiyang turned a deaf ear. Baiyang did, however, speed up just to piss off Qiao Chen.
But as the sky darkened, Baiyang lead them up and around a hill in the park. Qiao Chen collapsed into the grass, eyes closed and chest heaving, but Baiyang prodded him until his eyes opened.
“Come on, look up.”
Qiao Chen grumbled again, but did open his eyes to see a vivid sunset fading into the slow twinkle of office lights and street lamps. “Oh.”
“Now this is romance you dumbass.” Baiyang sat next to Qiao Chen before rummaging in his bag and pulling out two bottles of sports drinks and handing one to Qiao Chen.
Qiao Chen gulped down half his bottle immediately before saying, “This isn’t romance, this is exhaustion. The only reason why anyone would be amazed is sure relief from the end to your hellish running routine.”
Baiyang frowned. “This is more romantic than your binge eating date by miles.”
“Tell me the truth Baiyang, are you making a girl run with you just so she’d be too exhausted to run away from you?”
“You!” Baiyang’s body jerked in Qiao Chen’s direction, but Qiao Chen had already lept up from his sitting position to bolt down the hill.
“I don’t acknowledge you as having won,” Qiao Chen shouted as he ran off. “Just you wait! I’ll show you what romance is next week!”
“Who said I’ll go?!”
“If you don’t, you lose!”
------
The following week, Qiao Chen’s idea of romance was a movie. This was a standard choice and Baiyang initially intended to let Qiao Chen win if only to free up his time again. Taking a hit to his pride was a small price to pay in order to finally be free of his annoying teammate. However, as Qiao Chen decided to pick the most horrifying and gruesome movie available, Baiyang had no choice but to point out this flaw in the atmosphere. Which meant he was stuck with Qiao Chen for at least one more date.
Wanting a guaranteed win, Baiyang took Qiao Chen to, what the internet described, as the most romantic cafe in town. Baiyang considered it his win for sure until their ordered tea set came and Baiyang had broken the teacups by gripping the fragile porcelain too hard. Qiao Chen laughed until his sides hurt and thus the cycle continued.
The next week, Qiao Chen took Baiyang bowling and nearly hit the couple playing in the lane next to them. Baiyang countered with karaoke, but neither he nor Qiao Chen were successful at singing any of the romantic love songs they picked.
The fourth week of dates included paddling out in a couples boat that nearly capsized when Baiyang and Qiao Chen continued to jostle each other over who was paddling less and a date at the mall which was interrupted not by their own antics, but because there had been a glimpse of Mu Siyang with Ji Jingwu.
(“Stop staring!” Qiao Chen hissed into Baiyang’s ear as they hid behind a potted plant. “The captain will notice!”
“The captain hasn’t even managed to notice how hard Ji Jingwu is staring at his ass. He’s not going to notice us.”)
As the pair started to enter into their fifth week of their newest competitive streak, Chi Dayong intervened.
“Just what are you two up to?” Qiao Chen and Baiyang only stared at Dayong and did not once look at the other. “If this is another disagreement between you two-”
“It’s training.” Qiao Chen whipped his head around to face Baiyang. Baiyang’s expression hadn’t changed once. “For doubles.”
“Huh?” Dayong blinked. “You… you’re seriously training for doubles? By… going on dates?”
“Didn’t you and Jiale say we need to understand each other?”
“Yes?”
“So this is one way, isn’t it?”
Qiao Chen bit his lip as he took in Dayong’s confused face. “Baiyang, you really are clever when you want to be, aren’t you?”
Baiyang kicked Qiao Chen, who whined about the injustice, before he continued. “Senior, don’t worry so much. We’ll be a proper doubles pair before long.”
“Huh… Interesting…”
“Dachi…” Qiao Chen began. “You’re not thinking of-”
“Oi! Jiale!” Dayong called out. “Look at this new training idea Baiyang and Qiao Chen are trying!”
“What is it?”
“Let’s go out for omurice later and I’ll tell you!”
“Oh really?!” Tang Jiale ran into the office, smile as bright as ever. “Yes! Omurice! Let’s go!”
“Shit… When did Senior become that smooth?” Qiao Chen whispered.
“Don’t you remember? Everyone is smoother than you,” Baiyang replied.
------
It took another month of their dating competition before Baiyang drew the line. “We need to settle this.”
“Huh?” Qiao Chen looked up from his large bowl of noodles. Apparently Baiyang had taken his voracious appetite into account for today’s rebuttal of dating skills and brought him to a noodle place that was not only considered highly rated and romantic, but also had a noodle eating challenge. Qiao Chen was torn between finding fault over his wontons and just letting Baiyang win because this was a place that hadn’t heard of him and his bottomless stomach yet and the noodles were delicious. “How do you want to settle it?”
“No more dates. We settle this with what happens after.”
Qiao Chen’s chopsticks dropped into his bowl with a clatter. “With… what happens after?”
Despite Baiyang’s tan, Qiao Chen could have sworn there was a hint of pink on Baiyang’s cheeks. “Who ever kisses the best wins.”
“You-”
Baiyang raised his eyebrow. “Are you objecting? Haven’t you bragged about having had your first kiss already?”
Qiao Chen frowned. “I did.”
“So this is the sure fire way to see which one of us is the better date and finally end it.”
The remainder of the meal passed in a blur as Qiao Chen worked through several more bowls of noodles before they left together. No matter what Baiyang insinuated, Qiao Chen hadn’t lied. His first kiss had happened long ago, but that didn’t mean he was comfortable kissing just to end their little spat.
“But I bet I can totally kiss better than that grumpy, little, black, snake,” Qiao Chen mumbled to himself as Baiyang walked in front. “Of course I’m better! I bet he’s never kissed anyone!”
“What are you yelling about?” Baiyang turned to look at Qiao Chen over his shoulder. “Are you trying to hype yourself up or something?”
“There’s no way I can lose. I actually had my first kiss! I bet you’ve never kissed anyone!”
Baiyang sighed and pulled Qiao Chen into a quiet corner alley before pressing him against the wall and after a grunt of determination, pressing their lips together.
It should have been weird and awkward. The angle of their faces was off and the force of Baiyang’s kiss was hard enough to make Qiao Chen’s teeth hurt. Baiyang’s lips were just a bit thinner that Qiao Chen’s and definitely more chapped. Baiyang’s bangs tickled the bridge of Qiao Chen’s nose and his exhales were too heavy on the top of Qiao Chen’s lip.
So why, when Baiyang’s lips parted to nibble on his bottom lip, did Qiao Chen feel his heart thump painfully?
Qiao Chen pushed Baiyang back and scrubbed at his lips. “You nearly broke my teeth! You call that a kiss?”
Baiyang tipped his head up defiantly despite the pink dusted across his cheekbones. “I didn’t see you try anything.”
“Oh I’ll show you a proper kiss!” Qiao Chen stomped up and cupped Baiyang’s face before moving in for his kiss.
Despite the heat of his indignance, Qiao Chen didn’t smash his lips into Baiyang’s. Qiao Chen kept his pace slow, lips moving lightly over Baiyang’s. Baiyang, to his credit, did not move or shove Qiao Chen off immediately. When Qiao Chen pulled away, the pink of Baiyang’s cheeks was just a hair darker. Or it was a trick of the light.
“That was hardly a kiss at all.” Baiyang crossed his arms. “You just pressed our lips together.”
“Oi! And you think smashing your lips against mine counts?!”
“It was better than yours. I was falling asleep.”
“You-” Qiao Chen wagged his finger in Baiyang’s face. “You’ll see tomorrow! I’m just… too full! That’s it! I ate too much. I’ll win tomorrow after lunch!”
“You’ll lose tomorrow, after lunch.”
Tomorrow after lunch was extended into later that night after practice. This bled into an impromptu sleepover which lead into a late night and early morning. Fortunately, Baiyang’s parents were away, but nothing could save them from Zhuo Zhi’s questioning about their swollen lips.
“Just what were you guys doing? Your lips are so puffy…” Zhuo Zhi moved to poke Baiyang’s lip and Baiyang grabbed and squeezed the accusing finger.
“Senior, it’s nothing. We just ate too much chili pepper yesterday.”
“Oh… Was it Yan’s juice experiments again?”
Baiyang and Qiao Chen shared a glance. “Yes. Yes, it was.” Qiao Chen replied.
“Oh, save me some next time. I want to try it!”
“You can have all of it next time, Senior. We’ll leave you to it.”
------
Things continued to escalate in their own fashion. Qiao Chen and Baiyang were equally guilty as they took opportunities to snatch away the other and prove their worth at kissing. More than once, Baiyang could have sworn he heard Qiao Chen moan, but Qiao Chen would then push him away and claim that it was Baiyang and that was a stain on his pride that Baiyang couldn’t tolerate. However, kissing was continuing to prove to be another stalemate, so Qiao Chen stepped up to provide another idea.
“Seduction?” Baiyang raised an eyebrow. “How does that have anything to do with dating?”
“Seduction is very important to dating! It’s how you you can get that first burst of attraction!” Qiao Chen grinned. “I will totally manage this and win!”
“You don’t have a seductive bone in your body.”
“You’ll see! Just come over to my place tonight!”
Baiyang shuddered, but whether it was out of fear or anticipation, he couldn’t say.
But in the end, Baiyang decided on disgruntled dismay. “Why are you dressed as… A cat boy?”
Qiao Chen looked up from his position on his couch, cat ears positioned well in his hair and a long tail attached to the back of his pants and curling up onto his thigh. Qiao Chen’s shirt was also just a bit tight to show off what definition his body had. Either way, Baiyang decided he wasn’t impressed. Regardless of the weird thumping in his chest. “What? I was told you like cats!”
“Who told you that?”
“Jiale!”
“Well Jiale lied,” Baiyang said as he looked away from the spectacle Qiao Chen was making. “Besides, even if I did like cats, I wouldn’t like cats sexually.”
“So what do you like sexually?”
Baiyang sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Not this. You definitely lose this one.”
“Hey! You haven’t even tried to counter it! How do you declare me the loser?!”
“Because I’m not seduced at all.”
Unable to bear the declaration, Qiao Chen tackled Baiyang into the floor. “Nyaa… Ah Yang…” Qiao Chen licked his lips slowly. “Ah Chen thinks…” Qiao Chen nuzled the crook of Baiyang’s neck, smelling his deodorant and feeling his pulse quicken. “You’re lying.”
Baiyang growled before sending them into a tumble so he could end up on top. His slightly thicker frame loomed over Qiao Chen and his gaze seemed to carry a weight and a means to pierce Qiao Chen’s skin. Baiyang smoothed a hand through Qiao Chen’s hair, tugging lightly. Qiao Chen hissed, but couldn’t help the frisson of heat that passed through his body quickly. Baiyang also nuzzled his neck, but the warmth of his breath sent shivers down Qiao Chen’s spine.
“Ah Chen is naughty,” Baiyang said, his voice low. “If Ah Chen is good, he’ll be rewarded.”
Qiao Chen shivered before shoving Baiyang off him. On reflex, Qiao Chen covered himself, despite being fully dressed. “Asshole, if you’re gonna play that kind of game, you should have set up a safeword first. You’re out of line and you lose!”
Baiyang blinked. “Game? Safeword?”
“Uhh… Maybe we need to not talk about that right now...” Qiao Chen bit his lip. “We’ll call this one a draw for now. But I won’t lose next time!”
------
“Ah, Qiao Chen!” Xing Zi called out. Qiao Chen turned away from the vending machine to find his crush running over, hand already out to snatch his spare drink. Qiao Chen found himself jerking his arm away on reflex. “Oh, is that drink for someone?”
“Ah! No…” Qiao Chen apologized to Baiyang in his mind despite having only bought the drink on accident. This caused him to pause mid transfer of the drink to Xing Zi. Xing Zi tilted her head and Qiao Chen proceeded to hand it over. “You can have this one, no problem!”
“It’s been a while!” Xing Zi led them over to a bench and sat down. “You’ve been quiet the last couple of months. Has training gotten even more tough?” Xing Zi took a sip of her drink and Qiao Chen followed. “Yu Feng won’t lose so easily again.”
“Ah, Xing Zi, your brother is really good already. But Yu Qing won’t lose either!”
Xing Zi smiled and nodded. “Un! But… You’re avoiding my question.” Xing Zi’s expression changed. “You’re my good friend, Qiao Chen. You’d tell me if there was something wrong, wouldn’t you?”
“Friend…” Qiao Chen thought about it for a moment longer and realized that despite his passion for proving how good and romantic a partner he’d be to Baiyang, he still hadn’t asked Xing Zi out. More startling was how little he wanted to at this point. Qiao Chen turned to look at Xing Zi who was smiling at him expectantly. “Yeah… I promise I will talk to you about it.” Xing Zi’s smile had once caused sparkles in Qiao Chen’s vision and butterflies in his stomach. But now… there was only the strangest pang of guilt. “Training has been stepped up. Baiyang and I are going to show Yu Feng a brand new kind of doubles with our teamwork, you’ll see!”
Xing Zi smiled, a bit more earnest. “Good! I’ll look forward to it!” Xing Zi took another sip of her drink. “You know, that last time… I think you and Baiyang really do understand each other. You work well together. It’s… Sort of like complementation.”
“Hmm?”
“Opposites don’t just always fight, they cover each other’s shortcomings. You and Baiyang are an interesting pair of opposites. Maybe you will come to cover each other. Yu Feng might have a bit of a worry this time.” Xing Zi stood up and dusted herself off. “Think about it some more. I’ll go finish this. Bye bye!”
And just as quickly as she had come, Xing Zi left, leaving Qiao Chen staring at the remainder of his drink in the bottle. Qiao Chen did not leave until more than an hour later.
------
“Let’s end this. You win. I’m not romantic at all. Okay, bye.” Baiyang barely had time to register what had just happened before Qiao Chen turned to leave. Before he could take more than one step, Baiyang had already reached out to grab his shoulder.
“What are you doing? Since when do you concede so easily?”
“I’m not interested in playing this dumb game with you anymore, Baiyang. I don’t have to prove anything. I’m going to go ask Xing Zi out whether you believe I’m romantic or good at dates or kissing or whatever.” Qiao Chen did not turn around through his whole spiel. “Let go.”
“Something’s bothering you. Who said something?”
“Who has to say something? Isn’t it enough when I say it’s enough?” At last Qiao Chen turned around and shoved Baiyang. “So I’m saying it’s enough!”
“Don’t push me!” Baiyang got into Qiao Chen’s face. “I didn’t say you’re not allowed to say it’s enough. I asked what’s wrong.” Baiyang’s expression changed ever so slightly, but Qiao Chen could see it, after months of dates and kisses, he was better than ever at reading Baiyang’s microexpressions. And that was frightening. “You’re scared of something. You realized something.” Baiyang’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t like her anymore, you don’t like Xing Zi anymore, do you?”
Qiao Chen didn’t push, but he did step back. “It’s none of your business.”
“Qiao Chen-”
“I said it’s none of your business.” Qiao Chen took another step back. “I’ll see you at practice.”
Baiyang watched Qiao Chen walk off before sighing. He huffed, straightened out his hair, and walked off in the other direction.
------
“First, Lu Xia tells me you were using English pickup lines on each other.” Mu Siyang put up a finger. Qiao Chen and Baiyang pointedly did not look at their captain. “Then Dachi tells me you guys were going on dates.” Another finger. “Then Zhuo Zhi says you’ve been testing Yan juice causing swollen lips.” A third finger. “And now you both won’t even look at each other or practice together without yelling.” A fourth finger. “After how hard we’ve worked to get this far to nationals, I can’t allow you both to mess it up.” At last, Siyang’s tone caused the pair to turn to face him. “Until you clear this up, you’re both not allowed to play.”
“Captain!” Qiao Chen jumped up from his seat. “That’s not fair!”
“Sit down, Qiao Chen,” Baiyang grumbled. “You’re not going to change his mind.”
“You be quiet!” Qiao Chen waved Baiyang off. And for a brief moment, it sounded like things had returned to normal. “What do you know? Captain! I promise this won’t affect a thing. There’s nothing going on and nothing to explain. We will win! You can trust us!”
Siyang pinned them with his stare. “Go run thirty laps together. I expect you both to reflect while you do so.”
The two left to carry out their punishment, but it wasn’t until lap twenty that any talking or self reflection happened.
“You were right,” Qiao Chen said.
“Right about what?” Baiyang’s pace slowed so the two could run side by side instead of shouting at each other. No one else on the court seemed to notice, but everyone was just a hair less active as they ran. Even Lu Xia seemed to be sipping on his soda a little more slowly than usual today.
“Xing Zi.” Qiao Chen frowned. “I… I think I don’t like her like that anymore.”
“So what?”
“So I was supposed to date her! I was supposed to get her to like me! And we’d get married and have kids and teach them tennis!”
“So why don’t you?” Baiyang increased his pace again, but this time Qiao Chen sped up to match him.
“Why should I date her if I don’t like her like that anymore?!”
“You seem to want to do it anyway,” Baiyang grunted.
“But now I want to do that with you!”
Baiyang ground to a halt. The entire tennis court also came to a standstill. Qiao Chen’s face immediately turned red and he continued running until he had run away from the court. Baiyang was frozen until he noticed a tennis ball flying at his face. Smacking it away, Baiyang noticed Lu Xia wandering off, can pressed to his lips and racket over his shoulder.
“Damn junior, thinks he’s playing cupid…” Baiyang grumbled before running after Qiao Chen.
Baiyang found Qiao Chen hidden in the back of the locker room. Qiao Chen did not move even after Baiyang had slammed the door open. Baiyang approached and Qiao Chen curled up just a bit tighter.
“You know, you didn’t give me a chance to say anything,” Baiyang said as he crouched down. “Are you afraid?”
“Who’s afraid?!” Qiao Chen turned, his expression indignant, but his ears were still red. “I’m not!”
Baiyang sighed and his expression softened. Qiao Chen recognized it. Baiyang and he had split after one of their dates, but Baiyang had stopped short, noticing a kitten. The tone and expression Baiyang had used when comforting the cat had given Qiao Chen a warm feeling in his chest, and perhaps the idea that Baiyang would like a cat costume for seduction. Baiyang used that expression now and Qiao Chen wasn’t sure how he wanted to react.
“If you’re not afraid, then you’re going to listen, aren’t you?”
Qiao Chen frowned. “So what are you going to say?”
“I’m going to give you my answer.”
“I already bet I know the answer.”
“Are you sure you’re willing to bet on it?” Baiyang raised an eyebrow and Qiao Chen hated how much mirth he could still find in Baiyang’s expression, as if he was dangling a string of yarn in front of a cat. “What will you give me if you lose?”
“I don’t plan on losing to you, ever.”
“So what do you think I’m going to say?”
“If I say it first, then you’ll just change your mind so I lose!”
“So let’s say it at the same time.”
Qiao Chen nodded and Baiyang used his fingers to signal counting to three. The second his third finger went up, both shouted at the same time.
“I like you!”
“You hate me!”
“You lose, Qiao Chen,” Baiyang said smugly.
“What? When?! When could you possibly have-”
Qiao Chen felt his mouth click shut as Baiyang’s hand cupped his face. “You’re very annoying. But you’re very endearing.” Baiyang pressed a kiss to Qiao Chen’s forehead. “And I guess you’re not really all that bad to spend time with or whatever. So you’re wrong. I don’t hate you. You lost this time for sure.”
Qiao Chen covered Baiyang’s hand with his own. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
“I don’t accept this loss!”
Baiyang nearly fell over. “What?!”
“That confession was awful! I can confess a billion times better than that!”
“Wasn’t your confession out on the court? That was a billion times worse!”
“That one doesn’t count!”
The two continued to bicker as the rest of the team, sans Lu Xia, listened from behind the door. Several sighs of relief were released at the same time.
“Finally. I thought they’d never work it out.” Zhuo Zhi sighed again. “At least now they can be dumb together properly.”
Mu Siyang frowned at his phone. “Jingwu says he called it first.”
“Uh captain… When did Ji Jingwu…” He Xinglong trailed off when he saw Siyang’s expression. “Ah. I understand.”
“In any case, we’ve all ditched practice over this,” Siyang began. Everyone immediately stood up. “Twenty laps. And then we get them to pay for roast goose at Xinglong’s place.”
“Happily!” Xinglong agreed. “But what about Lu Xia?”
“Thirty laps for hitting a ball at Baiyang.”
“Captain… you’re too harsh!”

Combinational creativity
Han, Ji, Dongmyung Park, Feng Shi, Liuqing Chen, Min Hua, and Peter RN Childs. “Three Driven Approaches to Combinational Creativity: Problem-, Similarity- and Inspiration-Driven.” Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science 233, no. 2 (January 2019): 373–84. https://doi.org/10.1177/0954406217750189.
Combinational creativity is an accessible form of creativity we use everyday. We combine two or more separate ideas into a single new idea. This kind of creativity rides on our innate -- perhaps even neurological -- ability to associate ideas, memories, and thoughts.
However, combination is not necessarily association. Association connects and overlaps two things together; combination fuses them, for the deliberate goal of synthesizing something new. An association would be "rubber duck AND ruler"; a combination would be "rubber duck on a stick". In this way we can also see the generativity of combination, whereby surprising and novel traits emerge from the gestalt. (I did not specify stick; I only said "ruler".) Basic association does not guarantee gestalt combination.
We predominantly use combinational creativity in three contexts: problem-driven, similarity-driven, and inspiration-driven. Problem-driven combinational creativity works in response to an explicit problem, like keeping rain out of your hair with a manila folder and a belt tied around chin and head. The authors of the paper define problems as a "recognition of an incomplete pattern that needs solutions" (Han et al., 2019). Indeed, such combinations would "fit" the incomplete pattern. We tend to use the problem-driven approach the most.
Similarity-driven combinational creativity arises when we relate two items by their surface (formal, visual, physical) or subsurface (deep, structural, functional) similarity. An umbrella and a hooded sweater both keep rain out; what if we made the hood of sweater out of two sewed sheets of recycled umbrella canvas? In this case, we identify that an umbrella and a hooded sweater both protect from rain, and then combine these two concepts.
Inspiration-driven combinational creativity comes from a flash of inspiration, whereby we combine a basic/starting idea with an inspirational idea. One notable example of this is the Juicy Salif, when Starck combined the lithe form of a squid with the function of a handheld lemon reamer. Inspiration tends to be most sung about in the arts, but we encounter and use inspiration more than we think.
In my experience, the process of inspiration is actually derivational rather than combinatory. I am pulling or producing something (a quality, trait, etc.) from the locus of inspiration, into something completely new. I muse over this in "the inspiration of (using) your notes". Combination tends to be bilateral, where each combined concept mutually influences each other (or the end creative idea takes equal elements of both); derivation tends to be more unilateral, almost as if the locus of inspiration is "infecting" the end idea.
In the big-C vs. little-C creative distinction, combinational creativity leans towards little-C creativity. Little-C creativity is psychological and novel to the individual; big-C creativity is historical and novel to all of (recorded and/or actionable) human history. Developing big-C creativity in a vacuum seems quite difficult. I think it may be more worthwhile to carefully combine many little-C ideas or lucidly refine a little-C idea to big-C prominence.
I would also like to note that this paper conceptualizes combinational creativity as an additive process. I am also interested in other non-additive creative processes, like derivation (as previously mentioned) or subtraction, whereby we subtract a certain quality from a pre-existing idea.
For my current hybrid slipbox, Hemera, combinational creativity is of particular interest to me. The nature of the slipbox makes it trivial to search for notes on problem-driven, similarity-driven, and inspiration-driven bases, and precipitate new ideas and theories. This is not a new line of cerebration; I have been theorizing about recursive synthesis and associativity long before architecting Hemera. However, what makes this different is both the awareness that combinational creativity exists, and that the slipbox is encouraging from a diverse set of reading that serves the perfect substrate for theorizing.
