Dan Savage, the author and sex advice columnist, said the couple’s description of what their arrangement may become sounded something like his own personal situation. He practices a type of hierarchical polyamory, in which he and his husband of nearly 30 years each have a long-term boyfriend, while keeping their marriage bond primary. “They’re kind of publicly acknowledging something that most people can barely bring themselves to admit, which is that three decades into a marriage, almost all marriages at that point are companionate," he said. “What they want is N.R.E., as the poly people call it — new relationship energy, the excitement and lovey dovey-ness that characterizes a new relationship," he added. 'But they don’t want to lose the bond they share.”

I'm not going to criticize Ms. McCray and Messrs. de Blasio or Savage for doing what is best for them and for their relationships. This is obviously a very personal decision and there is no one right answer.

However, after three decades or in one's 60s, why would someone expect the "lovey-dovey" of a relationship's initial phases to persist. Relationships evolve with time, and I don't comprehend the desire to return to the sort of relationship one might have enjoyed in an idealized reminiscence of youth. Should I make it to my 60s, I expect to be too tired and slow to be able to do anything with this "N.R.E." I'm not asexual, but I don't expect my libido to be in prime shape after a dozen years of AARP membership. I am looking forward to, beezrat Hashem, embrace that companionate stage, to love the person through loving the duty to wake up with her daily and and continue to live a live of devotion even as whatever it is we call "magic" transforms into something perhaps more mundane, but also more enduring.

Yes, my attitude towards mature relationships is informed by "Do You Love Me" from Fiddler on the Roof. So sue me.

As a postscript, whenever I've been tempted by the prospect of "N.R.E." to turn my eyes away from a current girlfriend, time has proved that any such dalliance would have proved a disaster. "N.R.E." can be a self-destructive trap, and it is for the best that I've never gotten so entangled by it as to prove sexually unfaithful to a partner.
