When the global pandemic began its outbreak in December 2019, India announced the first lockdown on March 25th owing to the shutdown of every schools across the country. This pandemic has brought online education into the mainstream which has always played fiddle to the offline model. For a country like India who after realizing the potential in the larger base seeking education in the country, they enhanced the focus on management and development of education system in India through the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017) which aimed at an increase in literacy rates to 100 percent.  

The global pandemic has taken a massive hit on all the sectors of the economy. While it has been slightly easier for MNCs and professionals to adopt work from home as the new normal and continue business as usual, the times have been challenging for the education system around the world. With disruptions everywhere, several concerned scholars, citizens, politicians, and bureaucrats support the need for reimagining and reinventing the education system. Hence, comes in the smart classroom systems.

These nationwide closures are impacting over 91% of the worlds' student population. Several other countries have implemented localized closures impacting millions of additional learners. UNESCO is supporting countries in their efforts to mitigate the immediate impact of school closures, particularly for more vulnerable and disadvantaged communities, and to facilitate the continuity of education for all through remote learning. The UNESCO report estimates that the coronavirus pandemic will adversely impact over 290 million students across 22 countries. The UNESCO estimates that about 32 crore students are affected in India, including those in schools and colleges. 

With education institution shutting down temporarily across country as a measure to contain the spread of coronavirus, the education of the student has taken a toll on the system, students, parents and institutions. With no certainty of when they will reopen, there are more than million young learners in India who engender the far-reaching economic and societal consequences. 

“The first news of lockdown was a relief for me as it gave me more time to prepare for my entrance exams”, said Christy Antony who is now preparing for her medical entrance exams. But this news also brought a great amount of tension for Ms. Veronica Anthony who was in the verge of completing her portions and is now sticking to complete them online before the deadline issued by her institution.

The sudden switch is not only limited to private schools but even a number of government schools who have started running smart classes. Due to the accelerated adoption of digital technology triggered by the lockdown, educational institutes, business houses, data management methods and online education solutions have been forced to work in tandem. Many educational institutes are considering this as an ideal time to experiment and deploy new technology to make education delivery possible and meaningful. In a move to not let the crisis hamper the curriculum, digital transformation has become a new norm with educational institutes across the country. Many are leveraging it as a chance to be more productive and efficient while developing innovative and improved professional skills through online learning and assessment.

“It is a great challenge to monitor students through online classrooms and give them more understanding on the subject”, says Ms. Veronica who also mentioned that not every student has access to internet and smartphones. There is a glaring disadvantage as exams are being postponed. With examinations not being able to be conducted online there is also the impending challenge for the instructor to focus on the overall elements of a well-developed course and not just the question of imparting continuous and uninterrupted learning during the outbreak of the pandemic. 

Nevertheless, Covid-19 has prompted experts to rethink the conventional mode of education. Digital education appears to be a viable solution to fill in the void for classroom education for a period of three to four months while minimizing the chances of any infection to students until classes resume. More importantly, it has also brought the hitherto peripheral issue of digital education in India to the centre stage. Going forward, digital education is likely to be integrated into mainstream education. This will enable inclusive education by facilitating learning across diverse geographies in India. Moreover, it will provide an opportunity for educators to come up with customized learning solutions for every student.

”If Covid-19 school closures and their related challenges with distance learning have taught us anything, it is that we must liberate learning from outside curriculum and the disproportionate emphasis on information transfer”, was the opinion Christy had to share while concluding the interview.
