 On one level the book is about the life of a woman who is hardly more than a token in a great epic poem, on another it’s about how history and context shape how we are seen, and the brief moment there is to act between the inescapable past and the unknowable future. Perhaps to write Lavinia Le Guin had to live long enough to see her own early books read in a different context from the one where they were written, and to think about what that means.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Matthew P. Cochran, who went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on October 10, 2023.

Matthew was born on May 12, 1986, in Euclid, Ohio. He was taken from us far too soon, leaving a void that will forever remain in our lives. He graduated from Mentor Christian School in 2004. He then went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Education from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.

Matthew was a compassionate and dedicated individual who touched the lives of many through his chosen profession as a teacher at Mentor Christian. He had a passion for education and had the ability to inspire his students to reach for greatness. Matthew positively impacted countless young minds during his career, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge and inspiration.

Along with teaching Matthew was the Office Manager at Bible Community Church, he served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, also working with VBS, Gym Youth Ministry and Youth Group Leader. He began his life of service as a custodial assistant at BCC and MCS under the guidance of Mr. Bill Scholes, his best boss ever. He had a profound love for the game of soccer, finding solace on the field and fostering lifelong friendships through the sport as an athlete and coach. He was known to be an enthusiastic supporter of The Ohio State basketball and football teams, along with the former Cleveland Indians often cheering on his favorite teams with unwavering spirit.

Matthew was a loving and devoted son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and dear friend. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends. Matthew's faith held great importance in his life, as he was a devout servant of the Lord. His dedication to his beliefs and love for others left a lasting impact on those who knew him and the words he lived by 1 Samuel 12:24 "Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider what great things He has done for you."

Matthew is survived by his parents David and Carla Cochran, brother Joshua (Bethany) Cochran, niece Felicity nephews Jethro and Edward, uncles Phillip J. Strunk (Vicki-deceased) and Mike Cochran (Laura), aunts Kimberly Sulecki (Creig), Cindy Barnhart (Glen-deceased), and Becky Sayegh (Rod), his cousins, Creig Jr. (Amy), Dustin, Theresa, Shaun (Heather), Jermey(deceased), Joye (Aaron), Daniel, and Elisabeth.

Friends and family to gather on Friday, October 13, 2023, from 4-8pm at Monreal Srnick Funeral Home, 35400 Curtis Blvd, Eastlake. A funeral service to honor Matthew's life will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at 9:30am at Bible Community Church, 8600 Lakeshore Blvd, Mentor. Following the service, a burial will take place at Knollwood Cemetery, Mayfield Heights. During this sorrowful time, we extend our deepest sympathies and offer our support to all those who were touched by Matthew's life.

Let us gather to celebrate his life, reflect on cherished memories, and find solace in knowing his spirit will live on within each of us. Donations can be made in honor of Matthew to Bible Community Church or Mentor Christian School.
