Colonial America | How Social Class Shaped the Lives of Women and Children | Rational Politics
youtube
In this video, we explore the varied lives of women and children in colonial America, where social class played a significant role in shaping their daily experiences. Upper-class women managed households and directed servants or enslaved individuals, while middle and lower-class women often engaged in labor-intensive tasks, from farming to crafting goods. Although upper-class women enjoyed a more comfortable lifestyle, they still faced limitations, such as the inability to own property, as their wealth was often tied to their husbands or families.

Bring Me To Your Stars (on Wattpad) https://www.wattpad.com/story/349195649-bring-me-to-your-stars?utm_source=web&utm_medium=tumblr&utm_content=share_myworks&wp_uname=komej0sephine&wp_originator=6vqEpRp%2BB8UUAgvwzGdkz8abwajp3ggp3PjOTu%2FYHmC24jTKayzq%2B%2FZ%2BeAxQO%2FplOtifsTYTYth9tUsSousk9MXKC7BXWlOMwjUFUzFeETr8YEhGQFqM7ZVzVUX7HK3A Titanic officer, James Moody, wakes up lost and adrift at sea with vague memories of his past. And when the shopgirl at the counter insists that "White Star Line Shipping Company" isn't actually headquarters but a gift shop, James realizes he's not in 1912 anymore. How can he even begin to explain that he belongs to a world decades apart from her own? Titanic Retail Cashier, Emily Amberflaw, believes it's just an ordinary day on the job, until a strange customer approaches the register in cosplay and tries to convince her he's the "real James Moody". As his world collides unimaginably into hers, she realizes that what she always believed about hers wasn't the truth. Torn between two versions of her life, she is faced with a heart-wrenching decision. Choose the man she loves this time, or forever lose him to the currents of history? "And so, she asked me, in that strange dreamworld a century after mine, had I known the fate of her maiden voyage and my death to come, would I never have set foot on Titanic? The answer I gave her is that I'd do it all too much the same. I wouldn't change even a footstep, if it showed me away from hers." (Downton Abbey/Titanic Crossover)

This index is somewhat expected on an emotional and intellectual front. Emotionally, the themes of growing and becoming more mature (and its consequences) were frequent, ringing true with the state of my life I found myself in. Intellectually, there are common themes of the dynamics between the oppressor and the oppressed in a sort of Marxist class war sense, as the theme of one group in conflict with one controlling most resources was prevalent. I feel like this index captured things for the most part, though I was a bit surprised by how common the theme of the simple passage and usage of time were.

“His mother was yelling, ‘Feed it to the pig, you stupid creature! Why not? No one decent will buy burned bread!’ He began to tear off chunks from the burned parts and toss them into the trough, and the front bakery bell rung and the mother disappeared to help a customer. The boy never even glanced my way, but I was watching him. Because of the bread, because of the red weal that stood out on his cheekbone. What had she hit him with? My parents never hit us. I couldn’t even imagine it.” -Collins, The Hunger Games, 31

This quote is one that illustrates the fact that, though Katniss is stuck in a lower socio-economic strata than someone like Peeta, it does not exempt Peeta from having life struggles under the system that oppressed them both. The narrative in this case is that Katniss’ family at least has its moral compass despite lacking any finances, while the more affluent family of Peeta has somewhat lost its soul with their success. However, a closer reading indicates that, though Peeta is better off economically, his family too struggles in the economic burden that is placed under this cruel system that exploits everyone in the outer districts. Peeta too is a victim in the same sense that Katniss is.
