i think there's a really interesting metatextual component to how we view house md's finale. and this isn't taking shots at anybody because any and all interpretations of the finale are valid /gen. but i think we can relate some of the discourse back to how the show is told strictly through house's pov about 95% of the time.

i wrote a little bit about why i find the season 4 finale so successful here and the points still stands: when we're so entrapped by house's pov, we come to view wilson (among other characters) are entities that serve house's narrative. so when season 4 bursts that bubble/breaks open that box, so to speak, it's extra jarring. the scope of wilson and amber's tragedy goes way beyond what house can handle on his own, so the scope of the show expands at a textual level. like house, we're forced beyond an inherent selfishness as viewers of wilson's story. cool stuff!

and this happens again with the series finale (the cancer arc at large, really) in an even more overt way. wilson's cancer exists beyond house, and wilson's reaction to it are beyond house's control. all of 8x21 is house rejecting wilson's desires to die in peace, without any chemo, and only in the final hour does he accept this as an unyielding fact. he can change, contrary to his prior beliefs, at the very end.

so - to read the finale against the grain, or to believe that wilson ended up changing his mind and seeks treatment, reverts house md back to its original playbook. wilson exists within house's narrative. his textual choices are, at the end of the day, in service to house's perspective, and in service to the former ethos of the show that prided itself on house's namesake.

with all that in mind, and despite how much it hurts my heart, i have to believe that wilson stuck to his original plan and waited out the ~5 months till death. shortly after, then, house went with him. i read/enjoy other versions of the story because sometimes tragedy really is TOO MUCH, but this is my raw take on the ending. i hope i don't sound combative at all!

i have never reacted to anything with as much enthusiasm as the way ticks do when you approach a plant they're questing on. here's an example with this ornate sheep tick (Dermacentor marginatus) who immediately went into hug stance mode thinking i was going to walk another few centimeters forward with an oblivious look on my face. get your own blood, idiot

Like I know and support Buck learning to be by himself before he reaches out to Tommy, but there's no way Tommy sees it like that.

He... He made a whole fucking breakfast--not just toast this time-- HE BOUGHT CHAMPAGNE. He was so ready to celebrate their second chance and then-

And then Buck implies that he doesn't have to have feelings for everyone he sleeps with.

And then Tommy leaves.

And then-

Buck doesn't call. Doesn't reach out. And it's just like their breakup all over again except it's Buck who ended things and he's making it pretty fucking clear he doesn't actually want Tommy back--doesn't want a future.

I liked how in Nosferatu it’s shown that Ellen not only leaves Thomas behind, lets him go, but she effectively remarries, by dressing up in wedding gown and pledging herself to Orlok and then consumating their sort of marriage. Orlok came before Thomas as Ellen’s dark suitor and Ellen ended up in the end with Orlok, not Thomas. Lilacs as running theme also support it because they are associated with Orlok so even when Ellen was marrying Thomas with lilacs on her head she was involving Orlok into her marriage.

Yes, the lilacs!.. God, the lilacs. She wore them throughout the film, on her dresses, in her hair, as a scent - they're such a prominent motif, and it's very clear that she was never able to let go of her occult nature entirely, despite her very best efforts to conform. The way Orlok reacts to the scent of them in the locket is so telling, too!.. It must've felt like a secret note, passed in code - my first love, I've never forgotten you. Come to me. The hesitation, the slight trembling in his hands as he holds it. The way he keeps it without question, the way he can't resist opening it just to catch the scent - again, again, again. There is something so vulnerable about their connection, on either side.

I think that's why their consummation is so tender sdksjgdjh

i get so shocked when i hear abt 90s/2000s lesbian films that never popped up for me before, which is stupid because honestly i had no interest in any femslash movies as a teenager that weren't of the handful of controversial age gap ones, esp of the student/teacher variety. so i'm sure i just totally ignored the others whenever they had come up.
