The Murder City Devils – Webster Hall - July 28, 2024
Tumblr media
Formed nearly 30 years ago in Seattle, garage-punk heroes the Murder City Devils don’t play live too often anymore — but whenever they do, like last night at Webster Hall, it should be celebrated.

The Murder City Devils at Webster Hall
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On Sunday, July 28, 2024, The Murder City Devils headlined Webster Hall with a supporting set from TERMINATor.
Images of MCD are now available on Bowery Presents’ “The House List” here. The last time I saw the band was two years ago in Atlantic City for a festival called Frantic City. Photos from that performance are available here.

Napalm Death and the Melvins on 4/24/25 at the Culture Room in Ft. Lauderdale, FL!
Tumblr media
This co-headlining tour hit all stops across the USA with proof that they even hit Ft. Lauderdale (we don't get a lot of shows here). The place was sold out, if that's any proof.
I missed doomed openers Weedeater, but heard they were worthy. As I walked in at 9 PM, the Melvins had already launched into their first song. The two drummer lineup with Coady Willis back there, along with original drummer Dale Crover, created a wall of sound that would have even impressed Spector. Steven McDonald (Redd Kross legend, as you know) crouched in every rock move imaginable and entertained the hungry Floridians (and was that a Nudie suit he had on??). Up front Buzz "King Buzzo" Osborne wearing a flowery smock of some sort, and his thick gray, curly locks have gotten even more impressive. The Melvins gleefully beat the South Florida crowd into submission 'til everyone in the room was glassy-eyed and obeying every Melvins command. They have that sort of power.
Tumblr media
Apparently, UK grind-core band Napalm Death has been at it since 1981. They've got no original members, but most of this lineup has been together since the early 90's so that counts for something. The frizzy bassist (Shane Embury) looks like he hasn't left his basement since 1997, while vocalist Barney Greenway jogged laps around the stage in between lyrics. The songs hacked, buzzed, and ground from one to the next, and I swear I saw blood coming out of some audience member's ears (would I lie?).
If you wanted your ears to bleed, then this was a show for the ages. I wanted to keep my hearing, and I did, but major props to both of these bands for keeping this flame (bonfire?) going for as long as they have. I think they call this a gluey porch treatment, and it looks like it's gonna continue on for at least a few more decades.

Melvins + Unsane @ Webster Hall; April 29, 2012.
Unsane just dropped Wreck after five long painful years of waiting. You know what that means: new album, new tour.
They were one band I hoped to see live one day, and here’s my opportunity. In a rare instance, the band I’d come to see would be the openers, not the closers. Who got that night’s honor? Melvins. I never heard of them before, so I was going blind not knowing what to expect. I bought tickets to see Unsane, bottom line. Anything after that was a bonus.
I stayed in line outside the venue for a good 45 minutes before we’re allowed entry. I ended up getting the best standing-room spot possible: up front and center, right between the drum kits. It won’t get any better than that. It was a few minutes before Unsane started pouring out on to the stage. Here’s Chris Spencer ready to go. Dave Curran is all set. But…where’s Vincent Signorelli at? I’ve heard he suffered a bad injury that kept him from drumming tonight’s show. It’ll be Dale Crover taking over on drums tonight. Not complaining.
No one should expect the Unsane crowd to be the hard-knuckled, knock-down drag-out type. Far from it. The audience didn’t match the viciousness and filth of Unsane’s power as I expected. They were more relaxed and chill. Not one fan even started a shoving match. But, that didn’t matter to me. I’m here to experience. You’d know Spencer with those enraged eyes, clenched teeth, and maddening expression on his face. He’s even lifting up his guitar to twist its horn during the essential chords. That’s the nature of Unsane; usually a tough, painful, and injurious aggression of sound. Curran pushed through and kept it going on bass to carry its rugged sounds, and Crover did great as Signorelli’s temporary sit-in.
“Stuck” became one of my favorites on the newly-released Wreck due to the subject of desperate, hopeless addiction which reminded me of a friend of mine. It became one of Unsane’s “ballads” if you dare call it that. Not to say that it didn’t deliver any jarring, anguished, and mournful riffs that burned like a barn fire. They also covered “Ha Ha Ha” from one of their punk influences Flipper, and that would end Wreck. Did they play any other classic material? You bet. Spencer did whip out the harmonica for “Alleged” off Scattered, Smothered, And Covered. On that note, no one would expect Unsane not to play “Scrape” in their home town, thus making us New Yorkers proud. It was undoubtedly the shortest set I’ve experienced, but my ‘thank-you’ to one of my all-time favorites has been paid.
It took a while before Melvins took the stage. When they did, I was baffled. Who is this person with the huge grey kinky hair all dressed up like he traveled light-years from the cosmos to be here? It’s fucking Roger “King Buzzo” Osborne (no relation to Ozzy or that old crow Sharon, thank the Lord). Dale Crover is ready to go on drums, and Coady Willis gets situated at drum kit #2. On the right was Big Business’ Jared Warren; this berserker Viking warrior of bass player.
They must’ve played every card in the deck because they went all over the place. They ignited their set with “Dog Island” to psych things up and shot right off onto “Hung Bunny” for some thick sludgy stuff. They showed their fun side and sense of humor. King Buzzo would lead the charge with “Evil New War God”, which segued right into Crover and Willis dueling it out on “Water Glass”.
It was amazing how on “A Really Long Wait” that they perfectly balanced and stabilized their sound to a floating mass. They bended, twisted, and stretched their sludgy riffs on “A Growing Disgust”. One of their high moments came in the form of a Wipers cover (“Youth Of America”) where Melvins totally went bonkers and took all their time to run through.
It all culminated into “The Bit”, a trudging 12+ minute kiss goodbye that would seal the deal for tonight. Buzzo hangs his guitar up and called it a night as while they laid down some more monstrous riffs, leaving it up to drummers Crover and Willis one final go before their standing ovation. Warren turns on Big Business mode and takes over for vocals. He’s left on stage as the last man standing; firing out the final buzzsaws and drones to close the night out.
**********
You remember me saying that I had no idea what the Melvins’ legacy was. Damn. Now I know.
Melvins were the first band I ever realized to be an adventure because that’s how it felt for me. My mind took off, turned on autopilot, and let it fly. It was all full-on dynamics, never straightforward nor formulaic. That’s the gauge in knowing how great, knowledgable, and talented an artist is. You wouldn’t want to feel cheated either just standing there or just going with the motions because you would support them anyway.
I can count on one hand all the artists who impressed me on first sight. It works best when you don’t even know that the band existed. Meshuggah came to New York City with Ministry and turned Irving Plaza into chaos. The lack of crowd control that they enabled convinced me more than enough to get my hands on Obzen. Melvins had about 30 years of putting out albums and touring, and made the best of every minute. If I was a musician, I would take great strides to write and run through ideas as much as I can. As much as I like the countless bands who have some sort of formula and leave it up to their sound, sometimes you discover bands who run on structure and create many more possibilities for what can happen in the future.
**********
Believe it or not, the ‘bonuses’ still came rolling in. I arrive home after a long train ride and log on to my laptop to see if Unsane thanked us for being there. That I don’t remember, but reaching back, I don’t think they ever did. Our own skipped over us. What in the fuck? Reaching further was something I found to fuel the continuous fire of Unsane’s legacy. Curran and Jim Paradise just came out with a new project. They morphed The J.J. Paradise Players Club into Pigs, and their debut You Ruin Everything was now out in the wild. As my team lead always use to say: “yeah! Let’s keep the fire going!”

HIGH ON FIRE - Cometh The Storm
Tumblr media

The Storm Has Arrived: High on Fire w/ ZETA & High Command Live at The Senate
Grammy award-winning High on Fire is a doom/heavy/stoner/thrash/sludge metal band from Oakland, CA. which formed in 1998 after frontman Matt Pike’s former band Sleep took on a hiatus. High on Fire now consists of Pike (guitar/vocals), Jeff Matz (bass), and Coady Willis (drums). High on Fire has released nine (9) LPs, three (3) Live albums, two (2) EPs, four (4) Splits, ten (10) music videos, and four (4) singles. Their latest release, Cometh the Storm, was released on April 19th, 2024, on MNRK Heavy. Since its release, Cometh the Storm has charted high across the board with the music industry: #5 Current Rock Album, #1 Record label Independent Current Album, #3 Current Hard Music Album, #10 Current Digital Album, and #11 Digital Albums just to highlight a select few. As a longtime fan of High on Fire, Cometh the Storm is moving up to the Top 3 in my favorite albums by High on Fire. Snakes for the Devine (2010) and Blessed Black Wings (2005) would round out my Top 3 albums by High on Fire.
High on Fire announced via their socials on March 19th that they would tour in support of their latest release, and I noticed that The Senate in Columbia, S.C. made the cut for this tour. For opening support, High on Fire enlisted the help of High Command and ZETA. This would be my first time attending a show, and for that matter doing photography at this venue in Columbia, S.C. Now that I think about it, High on Fire would be my first show doing photography in the state of South Carolina. Truthfully, I know I am very fortunate to have this opportunity, and want to do my utmost best!
High Command is a thrash metal/crossover/hardcore punk band from Worcester, MA. that formed in 2016. High Command consists of Kevin Fitzgerald (vocals), Chris Berg (bass), Ryan McArdle (guitar), Razzle (guitar), and Ryan Pitz (drums). They have released two (2) LPs, two (2) EPs, one (1) split video, and one (1) Demo. They are currently signed to Southern Lord Recordings and their latest release is entitled Eclipse of the Dual Moons (2022). I first listened to High Command on the Bandcamp app when they were announced at tour mates. “Merciless Steel” off Beyond the Wall of Desolation and “Imposing Hammers of Cold Sorcery” off Eclipse of the Dual Moons were played during this set so I was happy to hear a few of my favorite tracks from High Command performed live. Their set was just as vicious and full of power as I expected from streaming their music before the show. I hope to see High Command later down the road during one of their headline tours or as opening support for another wicked band.
Check out High Command’s setlist from the second night of this tour below:
·         “Omniscient Flail of Infamy”
·         “Merciless Steel”
·         “Everlasting Torment”
·         “Fortified by Bloodshed”
·         “Sword of Wisdom”
·         “Imposing Hammers of Cold Sorcery”
·         “Impaled Upon the Gates”
·         “Eclipse of the Dual Moons”
·         “Inexorable Darkness”
Show High Command some support and head to their Official Bandcamp page today to grab some merchandise.
Zeta is a Venezuelan post-rock band that was founded in 2003 in Lecheria. Zeta consists of founding members Juan Chi (multiple instruments/vocals) and Dani Debuto (multiple instruments/vocals) with Chino Sandoval (drums) and Antonio Pereira (bass). Zeta has released six (6) LPs, two (2) Live albums, one (1) EP, and two (2) cassettes. I knew that Zeta performed at Grantski Records in Augusta, GA. a few months back, and I knew I should have made that show. Instant FOMO. I knew Zeta and how great this band would be live. But I had no clue of the magnitude until I saw Zeta perform at The Senate. Phenomenal musicianship with an electrifying performance!
You can view Zeta’s setlist from The Senate below:
·         “Intro”
·         “II Afrontar”
·         “III Sufrir”
·         “IV Perder”
·         “Yo el peor de todos (somos cosmos) XXV”
·         “V Completar”
·         “La flor del tiempo”
·         “VII Magia infinita”
Check out ZETA‘s Official Bandcamp page today and show them some love!
Closing out the evening, High on Fire took the stage at The Senate with a thunderous roar from the pumped-up crowd in attendance. After being warmed up with both High Command and Zeta, you could see the excitement in the crowd’s faces as “Karanlik Yol” played over the venue’s loudspeakers. You could almost feel the anticipation as the crowd wondered what song would kick off their set. In honor of their new release and the first single from Cometh the Storm, the introduction to “Burning Down” riled up the crowd as this was the second time that High on Fire has played this song (or any song off the new album) live for their fans. Trust me when I say, that “Burning Down” was just as ferocious live and left a lasting impression on me. I was happy to see “Come Down Hessian”, “Rumors of War”, “Carcosa”, “Fury Whip”, and one of my all-time favorite High on Fire songs “Snakes for the Divine” on the setlist for this tour.
You can check out High on Fire’s setlist from the second stop of their tour at The Senate in Columbia, SC. below:·
·      “Karanlik Yol” (Intro)
