After taking a break last month so materials for volume 6 could be made, Shirabe Meshi is back with the first half of its 39th chapter
Tumblr media
It starts with Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika being called to SONG headquarters. Shirabe comments that it's rare to do stuff with Maria lately because of how busy she's been with secret investigations and such. (Meanwhile Genjuro apologizes to Kirika who has been eating the whole time because even though it's lunchtime, she needs to set down the chopsticks for a moment)
Ogawa explains that the reason they've been gathered is because early that morning, an unidentified object came hurtling across the Pacific, entered Japan's waters, then they lost track of it so the government has requested for them to confirm whether or not it's a new type of Noise
Genjuro says it's strangely fast for a ship, but too slow to be a helicopter or plane
Kirika: "Could it be...a cricket?!"*
Fujitaka: "You mean a cryptid"
*I had to take some liberties with the joke here. Kirika says "Could it be...a horse?!" in Japanese, with horse being "uma" and Fujitaka corrects her with "UMA" (Unidentified Mysterious Animal)
Maria says that if it's a Noise, then they'd need to be sent out but if it's some sort of giant monster, then they'd have to pass the job over to the Commander
Tomosato pulls up some footage taken by one of the Japanese Coast Guard's ships and...
Tumblr media
It's Nastassja zooming across the water on her wheelchair (as a reminder, in the bonus pages Nastassja has been in Hawaii trying to recover this whole time)
So they think Nastassja is probably on land in Japan by now and they should probably find her but they have no idea where to look. At that exact moment, they get a call from Hibiki frantically telling them Nastassja is at Flower eating all the okonomiyaki.
Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika rush in and just as they do Nastassja spews a geyser of blood from her mouth. Uh...Naturally Maria, Shirabe, and Kirika are freaking out
Tumblr media
Poor Chris comes in afterward to meet up with Hibiki and Miku and thinks something horrible happened
Maria scolds Nastassja for eating too much, but she says that isn't what's wrong, claiming instead that crossing the Pacific put a strain on her body. The seat on her chair is hard and there's no warming function so she was more affected by the elements
Shirabe points out that she was supposed to have certain dietary restrictions. Natassja recalls that after she had her surgery, she was on a liquid diet for a while. When she was finally able to eat solid food again, she learned they were giving her "meat" made from soy.
She drowned it in some soy sauce that Kirika had given her and immediately had to be rushed to the ICU.
Tumblr media
......And then she escaped
Nastassja: "I missed the taste of Japan and before I knew it, I was rushing across the waves"
Maria: "I wish you'd at least say you missed us"
Shirabe reminds Nastassja that that no matter how good it tastes, eating like this all the time will make her sick. Nastassja answers back with "meat and carbs build up your body"
Maria decides they should go back to SONG (meanwhile Flower still looks like a crime scene)
At SONG HQ, they start discussing what to do next. Obviously Nastassja loves meat but she can't really handle it at the moment and she doesn't like soy replacements so Kirika excitedly says it's time for Shirabe to cook up something.
Nastassja says that they can't fool her with meat substitutes because her carnivorous views are far too strong so Shirabe takes it as a challenge and declares she'll make something that will convince her otherwise

walked from the coast guard station down to the haul-out and back past holy trinity and the float base. two big ravens in the ditch talking to each other, eating an orange, & twenty or so otters just swimming lazy circles in behind the shoal. wrens and murrelets. couple weeks back an old waterbomber lost an engine on the way to some aviation museum in the states and she's still out there too, belly down, listing a little, big red zodiac lashed to one of her floats. driftwood fire on the beach, someone making tea for the occasional ritual swimmer. dressing gowns and neoprene boots. promises to look out for someone's sock on the trail, "somewhere between here and totem, i don't know, it's grey." (complaining: pretty warm, this year. probably get a snap in february says the firekeeper to one after the other. chipped enamel on the mugs, sugar and milk, "soy if you want!"). dogs: yellow point-eared mutt in a red and white knit scarf, little coyote-looking guy, fat black pug, ancient alsatian in a bandana. hawthorn, snowberry, chokecherry, nootka rosehips. arbutus and oak. christmas day gale brought in a big old-growth hemlock perpendicular to the shore, with the rootball sitting out in maybe three feet of water: climbed up there to watch little silver fingerlings skitting in and out. don't know what they were. home for a pantry-clear hash (red pepper, chorizo, half a leek, shallots, two tomatillos, couple yukon golds, a heel of smoked gouda, three eggs). happy 2025.

This is partially true. USA does produce some food and some oil and most of that is exported by large corporate interests.
The central portion of the country mostly produces corn and soy. The western coast produces almonds and some vegetables. The east coast has some southern fruit growing. And mining crude oil that's useless to us and sold elsewhere.
The thing that will happen is most likely an internal crush where we lose the ability to feed our own population. As with many super powers in history internal famine will come for us.
This is because that cushion of money doesn't extend to the working people. And because the USA is effectively 13 regional cultural states, it's likely the trading and supply lines will collapse at those edges.
The USA has a massive military but large chunks of it are in the smaller national guard, which are posted regionally. The country is simply too large for it to hold together for any extended struggle.
I personally feel that the country will shamble along for a few more decades with shrinking supplies before any major unrest starts. Mostly because our sheets are high thread count, our pillows are downy soft, and the Internet won't fail immediately.
I don't think the US economy is going to collapse right now, but I think this will cause a slow down in supply chains which will cause inflation and crisis. The US economy can't really fall all at once because like other first world nations it rests in a cushion full of money under the rules they set for themselves, but the truth is that they're extremely fragile, they don't really produce anything anymore, just trade, any market disruption like this will create crisis.

It’s appropriate that Coach T is GM for the mystics because he seems to have some sort of international recruiting magic going on. If Rui Machida actually works out then he’ll have gotten possibly one of the worlds best available point guards for the bare minimum salary
I think it's a smart move. They aren't losing any inches because they're bringing in Rui to replace Leilani Mitchell.
But there's other factors. It will really come down to the Mystics organization and the players on the team making Rui feel welcome.
It's one thing to be a Belgian player spending the summer playing professionally in the US. It's another thing to come play here from Japan. The culture shock and language barrier is significant. There's many new challenges for Japanese players in the WNBA. On the court, she knows what to expect. She played well against the top WNBA players. But off the court, it's going to be difficult.
The travel in the WNBA season is grueling for anyone, but especially for a WJBL player. They rarely spend more than 3 hours getting to away games. The WNBA is a travel nightmare compared to that. Also, all the food here is different. Grocery stores are different. Food is very significant for an athlete. Most Japanese athletes eat natto (fermented soy bean) every day. It's a health superfood. She won't be able to find it at American grocery stores. She'd have to find a Japanese import grocery store in DC. Everything that was easy to do in Japan will take several extra steps to do in the US. And all of that is on top of playing in an extremely competitive league with a language barrier.
Ramu Tokashiki played 3 seasons in the WNBA. But she also played in a west coast city with a large Japanese-American population. She was semi-comfortable with English when she came to the Storm and only needed a translator her first season. Even though I think she adjusted well, it was probably still difficult.
Luckily, Alysha Clark, who was Tokashiki's Storm teammate, is now with the Mystics. She'll have a good understanding of the challenges Rui is facing. The only thing I worry about is the Mystics have a weird vibe socially. Elena Delle Donne and Natasha Cloud are besties, but sometimes they both get very intense and strange. And then Ariel Atkins is very quiet. It took a while for Tina Charles and Alysha Clark to connect with the team last year. So it might take a little while for Rui, too. But I hope not. Team unity, team identity, and team loyalty are everything in Japanese basketball. Without teammate support, I think it will be impossible for Japanese players to find success in this league.

Backstory/Background:
Past
Blaise was born on a compound to magical parents. They were wealthy and so made a sort of heaven for others of their kind to hide out at. Blaise’s family is one of the eldest in the magical world. They are also very few in number and some say the most powerful of any others of his kind, because of the ages long magic that runs through his veins, which plays a factor in their bloodline. As of the Salem Witch Trials, his family has been hunted as any other of his kind, almost to extinction. But still the most ancient of their kind, his family had been able to avoid mostly any attack on their kind for many years following the trials.  Until Seven days after his birth.
Technology for the witch hunters had becoming more significant since then, and his family along with all those of his kind who had found refuge in the safety of the Willows land, was soon attacked. Women, men, and even children were butchered in their sleep and defending themselves and loved ones.
Blaise’s mother and father were the last to be attacked, being in the most guarded home on the Willows land. The spells took a while for the hunters to break through. Giving Blaise’s mother and father the time to cast spells in order to protect him, and then they hid him. Days after the attack, a frighteningly disfigured man, along with a group of other witch hunters were going through the homes and trying to find out more on the witches and so on an so forth.
The spells had begun to fade from Blaise around this time. And the poor orphan had begun to cry, alerting the witch hunters to his presence. Pulling away floorboards, they soon pulled the small infant up from his hiding spot. But instead of killing Blaise, they decided to let him live.
Present
Being raised by the witch hunters. He was quickly accepted by them, or so it would seem. But little did he know, they had only raised him to be their own personal weapon against his own kind. Being raised by the hunters, and listening to their stories, has convinced him that his own kind are his enemies, and that his parents were killed by the others of his kind. These days he's usually hunting. He hunts down other witches, with the sole reason being that he believes they are his enemy.
But on his back, is the a tattoo of his coven, and the legacy that shows his true past. If only any  of his kind could get through to him. Lately the population of witches and warlocks and the like have been growing though. Most of them are too weak, being trained by other witches and not having the history in their veins to cast many significant spells.
Those who are powerful enough to take Blaise down have usually been those who’s family are just as, if not older or as old as his own family. And with the witch hunters constantly around him it makes any of those who try to reach him and reveal to him that he is being used fail in their attempts.

Koibito (P.2) - Zuki Week 2020 - Four
Title: Koibito - Part 2
By: Fanwright
Zuki Week 2020 Prompt #4: Date Night
Summary: Just a simple date. A night out in one of the many small towns that dotted the coast on Kyoshi Island, close to Suki’s home, but far from the troubles of the world. Nothing is ever that simple when you date the young Fire Lord.
Rating: T
Author’s Note: Second part to the “Date Night” prompt, in which Zuko and Suki go “ride or die” for each other. I hope you guys enjoy it!
Organizers: @madamebomb @whatusernamex3000
__________________________________________________________
He pushed the empty bowl aside, tossing the chopstick into it. Patting his belly lightly, Zuko sighed contently, letting his meal settle.
“I wasn't expecting that to taste so good,” He said, licking his lips. He could still taste the beef and broth, almost tempted to ask for another helping.
Suki merely chuckled, slurping up the last mouthful of noodles as she set down her bowl. “Yeah you tucked into that pretty quickly! I told you this place was worth it.”
“If we ever come back here, I wouldn’t mind staying to have another bowl with you,” Zuko nodded approvingly. He then chuckled, palm resting on his forehead. “Now you have me sounding like Uncle. He’d love this kind of comfort food.”
“I’ll hold you to it then, Zuko,” She smiled.
“What’s this soup called again? Ramen?” He asked.
“Yup! That’s what we on the island call it at least. Its just a noodle soup, beef broth flavored with soy sauce and served with pig-chicken meat, dried seaweed, and scallions.” She plucked up a napkin and wiped her lips. “Easy to make, sure, but if you really know what you're doing you can make it into a delicacy.”
“Well, you picked the right place for a delicacy like this,” Zuko nodded slowly. “The chef really did a good job.”
On the other side of the long wooden counter from where they sat, savory steam from freshly cooked ramen wafting around him, the chef perked his head up at the the compliment. With unusual grace for a man as portly as himself, he turned on his heels and gave Zuko a wide, toothy grin. “Thank you kindly sir! Always a pleasure to hear customers enjoy my meals.”
Zuko straightened his posture and leaned back in his stool, surprised that the man could even hear him over the cacophony of loud, chatty customers and clanking dishes. “Um. Think nothing of it.” Was his response.
“There’s something else that Old Man Tatsu likes more than compliments,” Suki smiled wryly. From her sleeve, a handful of copper mon pieces chimed against the counter. Just as soon as they were given, they were just as quickly taken up by the plump chef. He gave a wide grin as well, his crooked teeth bared once again. “Ah, you know me so well,” He chortled.
“That should be enough to cover the both of us, old man” Suki nodded.
“Of course it is,” The chef mused. He even bit the edge of one the coins Suki gave him, a crude way of checking whether it was legitimate or not. He seemed pleased as he stowed it away in his robe. He then turned his gaze specifically to Zuko, scrutinizing him. The young Fire Lord grimaced, making the chef chuckle.  “I don’t care where people are from. You could’ve come from the next province over or from the Fire Nation. As long as you’re copper is good, I’ll serve you a fine meal. Cheat me, and I’ll throw you to the musha of our domain.”
Zuko narrowed his eyes at the old man “Noted.”
“We get it, Tatsu. You have customers to tend to,” Suki reminded him.
“Ah, and money to take from them as well. Give a holler if you want more grub.” He waved them goodbye, waddling away to tend to his kitchen as the other younger cooks tried to weave around his imposingly round figure.
Zuko’s eyes lingered on the man, glaring at his back. “I think he was trying to intimidate me.”
“Old Man Tatsu likes to do that to new faces that come around here. Don’t take it too seriously,” Suki reached her hand over to pat Zuko’s fist. He had balled it tightly, knuckles turning white. “So relax, okay?”
Grunting, Zuko slowly loosened his fingers, holding onto Suki’s hand. “What did he mean by musha?”
“On the island, that’s what the Kyoshi Warriors are commonly called,” She said. “Each shugo, what you’d probably call a provincial governor in the Fire Nation, has control over a single domain and provides funds and supplies to outfit the musha of each domain. Each village might offer up a cadre of girls to be the protectors of a village or town, but its the shugo that has the final say on things.”
Suki took up a warm up of tea sitting beside her, pressing the rim against her lips. She took a slow sip. “My little village of Mikasa only got enough money from our shugo to raise a very small cadre. The Hatsuse Domain is poor. Towns like Haruna here in the Kirishima Domain can afford to raise a large cadre since their shugo is rich.”
Zuko listened attentively of course, but he felt embarrassed for not knowing about these things as much as he should have. Being the Fire Lord meant dedicating time to learning statecraft, economics, and diplomacy. So much was thrown his way that It was enough to give him a headache... and sometimes he just forgot things.
But it was in times like this, where he felt at ease with the girl that had so captured his heart, that he actually found himself listening. It helped that he found her voice so pleasant to hear. She could read something as dry as a treaty and he would listen to her talk, though he hoped things would never come to something as mundane as that.
“So, what does having a rich shugo mean for other Kyoshi Warriors?” He asked. “Does it really make a difference?”
When Suki set down her tea cup to answer him, the heavy clatter of boots along the cobbled road just outside the ramen house drew her attention. She wouldn't have given it much thought had they not been marching in unison. Zuko looked over his shoulder as well and saw how the mass of people on the street parted out of the way of a group of four ornately clad women, all armed to the teeth.
Suki’s shoulders sagged, frowning heavily as the group swaggered by. “Take a look for yourself.”
Zuko had always thought Suki and her warriors dressed rather ornately. And he had always assumed green was the standard color for any uniform of the warrior group as a whole. The young women that passed by put pay to those assumptions. They were as impressively dressed as they were imposingly armed. White painted faces and brightly painted lips, their hair crowned by intricately crafted golden hair pieces even more impressive than what he’d seen Suki wear while in uniform. And they weren't wearing green. All four sported vermilion colored robes, armored chest-plates as black as obsidian, each brandishing two swords tucked into crimson sashes inlaid with gold. They shouldered long and fearsome spears that towered above the crowds. They strutted as if they had owned the entire town.
As they marched away, the crowd receding behind them, Zuko couldn’t help but feel impressed by how they looked... and how much more intimidating they seemed.
“... they remind me of my palace guards,” Zuko muttered. “And I thought I was the only one wearing red on the island.”
“Peacocks...” Suki muttered venomously, sipping her tea.
Zuko quirked an eyebrow as he turned to face Suki. She had a glare that could melt through iron. “You don’t like them?”
She sighed heavily. “When I was little I thought the warriors of this domain were some of the finest on the island. Everyone did, and still do. Even dad was impressed with them.”
“Something changed though,” Zuko added.
“Yeah. When I became a warrior myself, I soon realized that all the groups within the domains had little rivalries with one another. Like schoolyard cliques. The cadres here in this domain, especially in Haruna, are...” She looked over her shoulders to see who was listening. When she thought no one was, she whispered. “... are nothing but privileged, overdressed thugs.”
Zuko chuckled, but Suki didn’t look so thrilled. “Kyoshi would weep to see what we’ve become.”
“Or beat some sense into everyone, if what Aang says is true about her,” Zuko said, squeezing Suki’s hand. “I hope you don’t think you’re like them. You’re no thug. You wear you’re uniform with pride. And you don’t have to prance around like a peacock to impress me.”
She smiled softly, leaning forward to kiss him on the cheek. “Thanks, Zuko. It means a lot to hear you say that. You’re being awfully sweet tonight, you know.”
“I have moments,” He smirked. “I just like seeing you smile.”
“Keep it up and we’ll see if we can’t find other ways to make each other smile,” She winked at him suggestively. His heart pounded against his chest, mind suddenly racing at the implications of what she might have been proposing.
“I wouldn’t mind that at all,” Zuko smiled knowingly, to which Suki giggled.
“Come on then you. Lets get some desert. There’s an ice cream vendor just down the street. I’ll buy,” Moving off the stool she took Zuko by the hand and beckoned him to follow.
“I’ll be sure to repay you,” He said, wrapping a firm arm around her waist as he pulled her in close, kissing her on the forehead. She squeaked excitedly, wrapping her own arm around him as she leaned her head on his shoulder.
“I’m sure you will.”
They held each other close as they trotted down the road, gazing up at the stars that glittered overhead. Couples wearing their finest clothes, groups of friends laughing at each others antics, even throngs of drunken fishermen singing chanties out of tune all passed them by, everyone of them relishing in the sights and sounds of the night. It was incredibly different than what Zuko was used to. For one of the few times in his life, he didn’t feel like a prince or a Fire Lord or someone that an assassin would stick a dagger in to. Tonight, he felt like another face in the crowd. Just a boy on a date with the girl he loved. And that was just fine with him.
He breathed softly, leaning his head against her. “This is nice.”
“Yeah. I’m really glad you came with me back home. I hope we can do this more. Just you and me,” She squeezed his arm. “I’m sorry if it was an inconvenience. I know you had important things to do when we left.”
“Don’t be. I can worry about all that when I get back. I’m glad you talked me into coming here,” Zuko said. And then he smiled. “I’m glad I’m here with you.”
Suki squeezed his arm tighter, chuckling lightly as they walked on. “The ice cream shop is right over there. we can get any flavor you want.”
“Sounds good,” Zuko nodded.
As they weaved through the crowd toward their destination, Zuko felt a sudden chill run through him. He tensed up, wary of eyes glaring back at him. Suki noticed as well, since her hand suddenly squeezed his. “What’s wrong?”
He didn’t really know. He peered through the crowd, eyes shifting from one face to the other. Suddenly, for a brief moment, right at the corner of his scarred eye, he found a group of four vermillion-clad Kyoshi warriors glaring back at him. They stood outside a food vendor’s shop, perusing the shopkeeper’s wares when Zuko had apparently caught their wary gaze. Two of them, dressed stylishly as identical twin warriors, waved their fans haughtily, their eyes like daggers pointed at his throat. Another pecked at a handful of nuts, eating slowly as her eyes followed Zuko through the crowd, a long spear leaning at her side. Their leader, wearing a golden headpiece adorned with the visage of the Unagi, rested her hand against the hilt of her sword. She had the air of someone who had sniffed at something extremely foul.
“... warriors,” Zuko muttered quietly. He quickly turned his gaze ahead of him. “They’re staring at me.”
Suki straightened her posture, but still held onto his arm. “Walk on. Don’t look at them.”
He squeezed her hand and kept his eyes forward. The ice cream shop was just head of them. He could smell the sweet aroma waft through the air, beckoning them closer. If they could only walk a little faster-
“You there! Stop!”
The high-pitched order cut through the crowd and rang sharply in Zuko’s ears. Some of the passersby looked confused, unsure if they were the ones that incurred the wrath of their musha. Suki merely tugged Zuko along, not bothering to stop. “Walk on.”
“I said stop!” Came the harsh voice again. Neither Suki nor Zuko did as the voice commanded them. And for his troubles something hard slammed into the back of his head. It surprised him enough to make him stop, his vision growing spotty as he hunched over, clenching his teeth in pain. Suki gasped, rubbing his neck comfortingly to try and nurse him.
“Are you okay?” She asked urgently.
“N-No.” Zuko uttered. “I think it was a rock. It felt sharp...”
When he ran a hand through his hair, a small bead of blood smeared the tip of his finger. Zuko growled, the pain adding fuel to his rage.
As she tried to help straighten Zuko’s posture, Suki quickly turned her gaze toward their assailant, fire in her eyes. Unsurprisingly one of the vermillion-clad twin warriors stared back at her, red painted lips curled into a vicious smirk. Another rock rested in her palm, while her twin fanned herself innocently, giggling at Zuko’s pain.
“Nice throw, sister~!” She chimed in, her voice deceptively sweet.
“Too bad the other turned around. Oh well~,” The other twin sighed dramatically, dropping the rock. “I would have thrown it at her too.”
Suki glared at them, teeth gritted tightly. The four warriors leisurely plied their way toward them. Others stepped out of their way, rushing children along or hastily taking their belongings with them. Each of them circled Zuko and Suki like pack of make-up wearing vultures, waiting for an excuse to pounce on them. The nut-eater chewed at her food slowly, using her spear as a cane as it clanked menacingly against the cobbled road. Something cracked in her mouth and she spat it out at Zuko’s feet, grimacing at him. The twins each unfurled their fans and covered their mouths coquettishly, skipping giddily around them. Their leader was the first to speak and jabbed a finger in Zuko’s direction.
“What is this?” She demanded.
Suki didn’t speak a word, shifting around Zuko to face the warrior. Her hands fell to her sides, fingers flexing with anticipation.
Grasping Suki’s shoulder, Zuko spoke up, barely containing his anger. “What’s this all about? Why are you-”
“Shut up!” The leader demanded. Again her gaze fell on Suki. “What is this doing here?”
He narrowed his eyes. She refused to even acknowledge him properly, to see him as human. His blood boiled, clenching his fists tightly.
“He is with me.” Suki stated firmly. “And he asked you a question.”
“So did I,” The leader was measured and calm, but her tone seethed with rage. “You dare to bring a foreigner, one from the Fire Nation no less, into the Kirishima Domain! Into our town! Sullying our streets with his presence!”
“The musha from Hatsuse Domain are a pack of damn fools,” The nut-eater muttered, gripping her spear tightly in her fist.
“Poor fools,” One of the twins chuckled. “Look at those rags she’s wearing.”
“They’re disgusting as always, sister,” The other chortled. “A rabble of back-country bumpkins without standards or morals.”
“And they’ll screw anything that moves it seems~ Look how ugly that... thing is. Its scar is hideous.”
“Can it even see out of its eye?”
“Its probably blind~” The twin held out her hand and gave Zuko a gesture that anyone would take as a grave insult. “Can you see this? I bet it doesn’t understand me.”
Zuko flared his nostrils, glaring daggers at the vermillion-colored Kyoshi Warriors. His fists were clenched tight, steam emanating from between his fingers. Suki tried reign him in, but even she had a limit to her patience.
“No one said a word about him not being allowed here,” Suki stated. “Everyone’s left him alone.”
The leader crossed her arms, unamused. “You think commoners without any training would dare raise a fuss with musha? Against a woman with a sword? You really are a damn fool, Hatsuse.”
“The good people of our town let us know when you arrived, whispered of some musha hanging off the arm of a foreigner,” The nut-eater muttered. “Had to see it to believe. Now you have to deal with us for offending our people.”
“What? You’re insane!” Suki protested.
“I ain’t the one crazy enough to cozy up to a damn Fire Nation foreigner, you whore,” The girl grimaced.
“Don’t call her that!!” Zuko snapped, his fists shaking with unbridled rage. “Don’t you dare insult her in front of me!! You’re all a disgrace to Kyoshi and the uniform you wear!!”
“Zuko...” Suki turned, surprised at his outburst.
The twin warriors looked incredibly amused, chuckling incessantly at his burst of anger. The nut-eater with the long spear merely shook her head and rolled her eyes, like she heard a bad joke. Their leader made her way forward, brandishing her obsidian colored fans. She unfurled them and her arms fell to her sides. “Insolent Fire Nation bastard! You dare to insult us, the great protectors of the Kirishima Domain! You’ll pay for that.”
Suki whirled around, swiping out her gold colored fans and striking an intimidating stance. She couldn’t hold back her own anger anymore. The moment the girl took out her fans and insulted Zuko was enough for her. It took Zuko by surprise. “Suki...”
Their leader’s eyes widened. “You’re protecting him!?”
“Yes. As I always have.” She stated. “I love him. And none of you are going to change that.”
Zuko’s eyes widened. He felt his spirits soar. His anger was supplanted by a renewed sense of purpose. To protect Suki. He covered her back, taking a wide stance.
“You’re a disgrace, Hatsuse. You do not deserve the privilege of being counted among the musha. You’ll suffer the consequences of your actions when we’re done with you.”
“Not as much as you’re going to suffer, Kirishima.”
The group leader bared her teeth, snarling as she took a more aggressive stance. The other three followed suit, fans and spear drawn.
“I’ll give you another scar for your eye, foreigner,” One of the twins taunted. It was the one that threw the rock at his head. Zuko remained silent and steadfast, but his gaze settled on her first.
The girl’s twin giggled. “You should’ve just stayed away~ Now we’re going to hurt you for insulting us~!”
“Not going to happen,” Zuko warned. “Suki. Duck.”
With only seconds to react, Suki suddenly crouched down. With a deep breath, Zuko unleashed a great torrent of fire from his mouth. It swept around the gathered group of Kyoshi Warriors, all of them reeling from the sudden display of light and heat that seared their expensively ornate robes.
“He’s a firebender!” One of them screeched. It was the twin that pelted him with the rock. He zeroed in on her first.
She was taken off balance by the gust of fire, her stance wobbly. Easily, Zuko merely extended is arm, a massive ball of fire shooting from his fist as it seared the air. It hit the girl’s chest plate, but the sheer force of his attack threw her back into a wall. The wood cracked behind her and she crumpled to the ground, groaning in pain. Revenge never tasted so sweet.
“Sister!” The other twin cried out, charging forward, the blades of her fan glinting. “You pig! I’ll kill you!”
“Get in line!” With practiced and efficient grace, Suki swept low and kicked out her legs to trip the oncoming warrior. She fell to the ground, her face scratching against the stone surface, smearing it with make up. She tried to get up, to unleash her fury and fight back, but Suki was ready to meet her. Closing her fan and clenching it in her fist, she let loose a vicious punch that connected with the girl’s cheek. She could hear the jaw crack. The girl plopped back down, unable to get up, whining painfully as her vision spun.
“You made that look easy,” Zuko stated.
“It was,” Suki smirked.
The cold flash of steel soon drew Zuko’s attention. The other warrior with the spear lunged forward, a vicious war cry emanating from her throat. Zuko barely had enough time to side step and turn out of the way. He could feel the blade slice into the skin on his bicep, fabric ripping away. He winced, groaning in pain at the sting of the cut. His elbow shot forward and with the force of a stone it smashed into the girl’s nose. She was taken off balance, her feet quivering under her. Zuko took the opportunity to grasp the spear and push her back with it. She fell to the ground, clutching at her face as blood trickled between her fingers.
“Idiots! I have to do everything myself!!” The leader rushed forward, charging toward Suki.
Quickly, Suki dodged out of the way of a swipe, but the blade’s on the fan nicked her shoulder. It cut into the fabric, a small red stain sullying her blue robe. Again the vermillion-clad warrior lunged forward with a strike from another fan and Suki was pushed back, curling up defensively.
“Come on!!” The girl cried out, her fans cutting recklessly through the night air. She left herself wide open and Suki took her chance. With the graceful sweep of her own fans, she was able to grapple her assailant’s arm. Holding her in place Suki’s elbow struck back, slamming into the girl’s nose. She cried out in pain and tried desperately to wriggle away, but Suki wouldn’t let her go. She swept her leg under the girl and flung her to the ground. Her armor and gold headpiece scratched against the surface with a resounding chime. And with one final blow, still pinning the leader in place, Suki brought her fist down hard. White make up smeared her first and blood trickled from the girl’s nose in a thick stream. She whimpered pathetically, laying defeated under Suki.
As Zuko flung the spear to the side of the street, he looked at their handy work with some amazement, breathing a sigh of relief.
“A lot of bluster for how easy they went down.” He clutched at the cut on his arm. It was small and only pierced the flesh, but it stung incredibly bad. “They might need to train more.”
“Like I said. Peacocks.” Suki muttered. A finger pressed down on the cut on her shoulder. She winced painfully. “They might get the money, but the only fighting they saw during the war was then they were called to break up drunken fights.”
“Glad I have the actual fighters in my care,” Zuko smiled.
“I trained them well, of course,” She smirked.
Over the pained groaning of the girls laid out on the street, the blare of high pitched whistles and the march of boots echoed through the night air.
“Oh no... more are coming,” Zuko muttered.
“Lets get out of here then. Four was enough, but I’m not willing to push my luck on the entire town’s cadre,” Suki tugged at his sleeve.
“Agreed. I’ll follow you.”
They hurried away back down the street as the whistling and marching got louder. Quickly, Suki led Zuko down a tiny alley way, tucking themselves away in the shadows. It was a tight fit and their bodies rubbed against each other uncomfortably.
“Ow! Watch your knee, Zuko,” Suki yelped.
“Sorry. Here, lets shift each other-” He held her by the waist, his knee almost digging in between her legs. “... like this!”
“Shhh! Keep your voice down,” Her hand clamped over his lips. He could hear the footsteps against the road as well.
Long shadows were cast against the alley walls, passing them by completely. The sound of warriors barking orders to find them resounded through the street.  Soon the sounds died away and the breath that Zuko and Suki were each holding was slowly released.
And then they laughed. Not loudly enough to be heard, but just enough to hear each other.
“We really kicked up a hornet’s nest, huh?” She giggled, trying to cover her mouth and restrain her laughter.
“Yeah. Looks that’ll end our date for tonight,” Zuko chuckled. “That way we can at least clean these cuts.”
“Whenever you’re ready to go then,” She said.
“R-Right. Right...”
Even with the warriors gone, both of them stayed in place, Zuko’s hands still clasped to her hips. He was unwilling to move. The way she leaned into him, her warm, slender body pressed so closely to his chest, made his heart thump in his ears. He looked down at her, trying to steal a glance, only to find her eyes staring back at him. He pursed his lips awkwardly.
“Suki, I-”
“Yes? What is it?” Her eyes seemed to glitter in the soft dim light, unblinking. Had she been waiting for him to say something?
He blinked, swallowing hard. “... what you said earlier... did you mean it?”
“That I-”
“That you loved me,” Zuko stated. “Did you really mean that?”
She only paused to smile up at him, gently cupping his scarred cheek in her hand. “I did,” She nodded her head gently. “I love you Zuko. You’ve been really good to me, even sticking up for me. I hope I’ve been good to you.”
His heart thumped against his chest again, butterflies in his stomach. He didn’t know why, but his eyes stung a little. For a moment he didn’t know what to say, her words touching his very soul and ringing like a sweet chorus in his ears.
I love you.
He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against hers. He pressed her up against the wall and her arms wrapped around his neck pulling him even closer. Her breath tickled his lips and he grasped tightly at her waist.
“I love you too, Suki,” He said. “So, so, much. I don’t deserve you. I just want to hold you so you never leave me.”
He had so much more he wanted to say to her. How she made him feel, how she always managed to make him smile, feel special, feel loved. But he could hardly utter a word. Her lips had found his, her arms embracing him, unwilling to let him go.
They remained there, basking in bliss, even as the crowds came back and the stalls reopened. The night went on, the stars twinkled overheard, and the sounds of laughter and merriment continued unabated.
The date was ruined, but their love for each other only grew.

Happy 227 Birthday, Coast Guard
President George Washington established the U.S. Coast Guard on Aug. 4, 1790, when he signed the Tariff Act that authorized the construction of 10 vessels, referred to as “cutters” to enforce federal tariff and trade laws and prevent smuggling.
Referred to as the Revenue Cutter Service for more than a century, it was renamed the Coast Guard in 1915. In 1967, it was transferred to the Department of Transportation before being transferred to the Department of Homeland Security, where it resides today.
The Coast Guard serves dually as a federal law enforcement agency and military force, protecting the U.S. in peacetime and in war. It protects more than 100,000 miles of U.S. coastline and inland waterways, and safeguards an Exclusive Economic Zone comprising 4.5 million square miles. More than 56,000 Coasties operate a fleet of 243 cutters, 201 fixed and rotary-wing aircraft and more than 1,600 boats.
On an average day, the Coast Guard:
Conducts 45 search and rescue cases
Saves 10 lives
Saves over $1.2 million in property
Seizes 874 pounds of cocaine and 214 pounds of marijuana
Conducts 57 waterborne patrols of critical maritime infrastructure
Interdicts 17 illegal migrants
Escorts 5 high-capacity passenger vessels
Conducts 24 security boardings in and around U.S. ports
Screens 360 merchant vessels for potential security threats prior to arrival in U.S. ports
Conducts 14 fisheries conservation boardings
Services 82 buoys and fixed aids to navigation
Investigates 35 pollution incidents
Completes 26 safety examinations on foreign vessels
Conducts 105 marine inspections
Investigates 14 marine casualties involving commercial vessels
Facilitates movement of $8.7 billion worth of goods and commodities through the nation’s Maritime Transportation System
Coast Guard Core Values
Honor. Respect. Devotion to Duty.
Read on to see what some Coast Guard spouses have been doing with their time!
Here’s what our Coast Guard Spouse of the Year community is up to:
I have continued to write a column about military family life for the Coast Guard every two weeks. I started writing it as a volunteer effort four years ago, and From the Homefront has been a great way to show how dynamic and resilient our families are. I’m also a member of the board of directors for the Military Family Advisory Network, where I have the chance to serve families of all branches of service and to make sure they get the support they need. I also volunteer my time as an Arlington Lady, making sure that no member of the Coast Guard family is buried alone.
Our family moved to the Washington, D.C., area a few years ago and, after struggling with unemployment at our previous station, I was able to find work teaching media law at The George Washington University and at the University of Florida.
My husband is stationed at Coast Guard headquarters, where he is the chief of aviation forces. Last year was the 100th anniversary of Coast Guard aviation, so it has been an exciting time to be here!
~Shelley Kimball, 2013 AFI U.S. Coast Guard Spouse of the Year
My husband, 12-year-old son and black lab PCSed from Rhode Island to Astoria, Ore., at the end of June. I am going into my third year working full time with Semper Fi Fund. I am a graphic designer/photographer and website administrator. This past year I was able to travel for many of our Team Semper Fi and Community Athlete events – Boston Marathon; Beat the Bridge, Jacksonville, N.C.; Tunnel to Towers, New York City; and the Marine Corps Marathon, Washington, D.C. Last year during Thanksgiving week, Semper Fi Fund was given a PSA in Times Square. Eleven of my images were chosen and displayed in bright lights during one of the busiest travel times in NYC – what an amazing feeling that was!
I have been a photographer for almost 18 years. My passion is photographing high school seniors, military families, service members and children. I finished up my fourth year volunteering with Military Spouses of Newport – the local all hands spouse club. I was the Hospitality Committee Chair from 2013-2015 and President from 2015-2017.
~Stacey Benson, 2015 AFI U.S. Coast Guard Spouse of the Year
While stationed in Kodiak, Alaska, I met with Senator Nelson, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Ray (PACAREA Admiral’s wife) to discuss Kodiak work-life/family issues and with Superintendent MacDonald (Kodiak Island Borough School District) regarding Education Opportunities for Military Children. Our superintendent was asked to provide input for the entire state of Alaska.
I also participated in Mishap training with Air Station Kodiak. Essentially this was a drill to practice if one of our aircraft when down. We role-played our participation and brainstormed what if scenarios. It was the most important and beneficial training I ever participated in. It was also the most emotionally draining.
I worked with Safe Routes to School, a local organization to create the first Bike Rodeo on Base Kodiak. This free event provided bicycle helmets, bike tune ups, taught street safety and obstacle courses.
In 2016 we PCS’d from Kodiak to NAS Pensacola where my husband was promoted to CPO. He is in a very unique position as a composite instructor. In a nutshell, he is a Coastie working for the Air Force on a Navy base. It’s been an interesting year. Before leaving Kodiak I became an ombudsman trainer. While I am not able to be an ombudsman at this unit it is an invaluable resource that is near and dear to my heart.
Due to the unique nature of this assignment I decided to take this time for myself to focus on me. I finally put my big girl panties on and took the teaching certification exams for the state of Florida, earning my Special Education Teaching License, became a Registered Behavior Technician and will enroll in a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analysis) program to provide ABA therapy to children on the spectrum (a dream of mine).
Rob and I have three boys (Robert 13, Chris 11 and Paul 8). This summer we adopted the best dog ever — a black mouth cur named Bruno!
~Danielle Medolla, 2014 AFI U.S. Coast Guard Spouse of the Year
It was PCS season for us. We transferred over the summer and are settling into the same city where our oldest son is stationed. I am working diligently on starting up a multi-unit spouse club at our new duty station and assisting with doing the same at our old one. I’ve also continued my efforts to assist special needs families throughout the Coast Guard, starting with District 7. I recently traveled to Dubai for a Lifestyle Rewards vacation I earned from Jeunesse Global. While there I enjoyed a desert safari, which included an off-road sand dune excursion, a once-in-a-lifetime camelback ride, and an extravagant torch-lit dinner at a desert oasis with belly dancers for entertainment!
My husband and I recently dove in to a monthly fitness challenge presented by Cerno called #GiveASquat (spearheaded by Michelle Aikman, 2016 AFI Air Force SOY). We’ve rallied together active duty service members and spouses across the country, friends and fitness instructors from local YMCAs, and fellow Jeunesse Independent Distributors to donate their squats to assist with completing the challenge. In turn, the sponsor of the month makes a financial donation to the benefitting nonprofit of the month. Our team #Squattin8ers takes pride in our work with this program and intends to continue building awareness of the challenge! Be sure to check out gocerno.com/giveasquat or the Facebook Group “30-Day GiveASquat Fitness Challenge” for more details!

Waterway under vital Memphis bridge reopens to maritime traffic
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/waterway-under-vital-memphis-bridge-reopens-to-maritime-traffic/
Waterway under vital Memphis bridge reopens to maritime traffic
Earlier Friday, the Coast Guard said more than 60 vessels with over 1,000 barges had been held up on the river.
The first vessel with barges passed under the bridge just after 10 a.m. local time, according to MarineTraffic.com.
An initial analysis of the bridge found it to be “stable,” and an independent firm was to take a second look on Friday, Tennessee’s Chief Engineer Paul Degges said before the reopening was announced. Officials had said emergency repairs could take months and lead to delays in a major US shipping corridor.
“Based on information provided to us by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard has determined that transit under the I-40 bridge is safe for maritime traffic,” Coast Guard Capt. Ryan Rhodes of the Port of Memphis said in a statement.
“We appreciate the cooperative efforts of both the Tennessee and Arkansas Departments of Transportation, as well as maritime port partners, to ensure the safety of our waterway.”
Closure highlights nation’s crumbling infrastructure
The Hernando de Soto Bridge on Interstate 40 — a major artery for traffic crossing the Mississippi River between Memphis and eastern Arkansas — was shut down Tuesday for emergency repairs after transportation officials discovered the crack during a routine inspection.
The Coast Guard’s decision on reopening the passageway to barges was contingent on a final state DOT analysis.
The bridge closure highlights the nation’s crumbling infrastructure and President Joe Biden’s push for a $115 billion increase in spending to modernize bridges, highways, roads and main streets in need of repair.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on Friday said the shutdown was “a huge disruption” to traffic both on the road and on the Mississippi River. He told The Washington Post an inspection “revealed a major crack that could have led to a catastrophic failure.”
“So we don’t have to use our imagination to understand why bridges are important and why they need to be in good repair,” Buttigieg said.
“We need first-rate infrastructure if we want to have a first-place economy,” he added. “This is a matter of economic competitiveness, as well as safety and wellbeing.”
The infrastructure plan, which must be approved by Congress, aims to fix the 10 most economically significant bridges in the country, as well as proposing repairs to 10,000 smaller bridges.
It’s possible the Hernando de Soto Bridge would be eligible for funding, but the White House’s plan lacks details on how the money would be disbursed. The administration has not identified which 10 bridges it deems most economically significant.
I-40 is a major transcontinental transportation route, Degges said. Appradab affiliate WMC called the bridge a “vital piece of America’s infrastructure for moving traffic and freight around the country.”
According to the TDOT, the average daily traffic for the bridge is about 45,000 vehicles, with about 25% of that being truck traffic.
Drivers are being rerouted to Interstate 55, about 3 miles south, where another bridge spans the Mississippi River, causing major delays.
Degges sought to reassure the public about mounting concerns this week over the condition of the “old bridge” where I-40 traffic has been diverted, particularly the high volume of eighteen-wheelers.
“The wear and tear over that time would be infinitesimal,” Degges said.
“It will not measurably accelerate the deterioration of the bridge during the short duration” of heavier traffic, he added.
Tennessee shares responsibility for the bridge with the Arkansas Department of Transportation, which discovered the crack during a routine inspection and immediately shut down the bridge, the release said.
Degges described the crack as “very unusual.” He believes the crack was most likely caused by fatigue or a welding error when the bridge, designed in the 1960s, was originally constructed, but the state will conduct forensic analysis to discern the exact cause.
The bridge was opened in August 1973 with a price tag at that time of $57 million, WMC reported.
It’s unclear how long the crack has been there, but Degges believes it has probably been there for a couple weeks. He noted it was not present during a bridge inspection in September 2019.
Prices of corn and soybeans could rise
Soy Transportation Coalition Executive Director Mike Steenhoek told Appradab the marine traffic shutdown was an “unwelcome” situation and, in the short term, prices of corn and soybeans could increase, especially south of Memphis.
If traffic along the river remained suspended, Steenhoek expected the industry to begin shifting to rail and to a lesser extent, trucks, to move product.
As for any grain stuck on barges, Steenhoek says there’s significant difficulty and expense in unloading and moving it to other types of transportation. “I expect the barges in the queue will wait — hoping traffic will resume in the near future,” he said.
The system has already been stressed by shifting buying and consumption habits, and a shutdown or delay can easily compound the challenges, he said.
At 48 years old, the Hernando de Soto Bridge is newer than the 72-year-old Memphis-Arkansas Bridge on I-55, where traffic is being diverted.
Appradab’s Katie Lobosco, Amir Vera, Jason Morris, Kate Sullivan, Richard Davis and Paul P. Murphy contributed to this report.

My Bad Coffee Travel Guide
There’s something incredibly reliable about good coffee shops. My own dependability on decent barista coffee is similar to that of a heroin addict relying on their drug dealer.
Yes, I say that, because not getting the right coffee can seriously ruin my day. And people who know what I mean, know what I mean.
Tumblr media
So what’s so difficult about getting good coffee when you’re far from home?
For me personally, there are three relatively annoying barriers to live with:
One:
I’m not into black coffee and I don’t drink milk that came from a cow’s tit (how did we only just realise this isn’t natural?!)
Two:
I can tell good coffee beans from the bad a mile off.
This means I need access to a skilled barista who knows how to source good coffee beans and process them correctly as well as appreciates that silly milk alternatives such as soy, coconut or pea (nice try Sproud, but you’re not quite there) are simply not acceptable. They change the taste of coffee. Unsweetened oat (yes, I’m looking at you, Oatly Barista) is a good alternative - it doesn’t get in the way of coffee. Simple.
Three:
I want to sit down to drink my coffee.
That one may need a bit of explaining. What can I say, I just like to sit down and feel it sink in and stir that God-sent buzz into my blood. I don’t care to run along with a herd of angry commuters, not before I had my fix.
Yes, I’m that much hard work. And the sit down requirement stands in conflict to the previous two goals. The God Of Caffeinated People knows that if you manage to get a perfect oat latte, you’re most likely in a very busy cafe.
(decaffeinated growl)
Nevertheless, in 2019 all this fussiness can seem carefully marketed to.
I mean, all over the globe coffee culture is being taken to absolute extremes hitting an all time high with recent nitro cold brew and what not.
But let me tell ya. Having travelled a fair bit in the last two years whilst often working from cafes I feel I could write a book about bad coffee experiences.
The good ones? They’re good. You get your fix, lift your spirits and on with your day. It’s the bad ones you remember because for some reason they really f*** with you.
So here’s my completely biased and selected at random Bad Coffee Travel Guide. Here I go.
1. Surprisingly, there’s no bad coffee in Norway
This came much to my surprise but perhaps the best overall coffee experience I had was in Oslo and Bergen. Something about the seemingly cold, neat and annoyingly healthy Norwegians makes them perfect coffee addicts.

No matter how hard I tested the nordic coffee scene, I just could not get bad coffee in Bergen. And it’s not an insignificant detail that they have a way of pampering you with their waffles. It’s one thing to eat a delicious, warm norwegian waffle (whilst admiring the perfectly erect posture of your nordic barista). It’s quite another to be able to make one yourself, which I came across in a couple of cafes in Norway and wept with pleasure.

2. Obviously, there’s no bad coffee in Italy
We all hate Italy. It’s basically a country which has everything and one does struggle to think of a single reason why they shouldn’t just drop everything and move to Tuscany, or Puglia, or Veneto, or…
But if you are looking for reasons not to move to Italy (other than grown-up ones such as crime rates) quite possibly the hardest one will be coffee. They make espressos taste like mother’s milk and paint the gentle foam on top of each unmistakable cup with the finesse of Michaelangelo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried catching the Italians off guard by ordering coffee in petrol stations, at busy airports or very near the northern borders. But no luck. Their coffee is so good, I prefer it in an espresso or alongato so I can savour it. And if I want my afternoon cappuccino, I don’t even mind a bit cow milk.
In Italy, I’m not even fussy anymore. They’re that good. It’s super annoying.

3. There’s almost no bad coffee in New York
To decrease your chances of getting a baddie in NYC, go Brooklyn. Brooklyn feels almost like the home of most of this world’s baristas so it’s no wonder I didn’t even have to ask. I just walked in and the person behind the coffee machine would just start making my coffee. They knew.
But even if you stay in Manhattan, you’re likely to be wowed: the Japanese themed, the minimalist, the artsy, the functional - whatever tickles your reusable mug.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only annoying aspect of coffee drinking in New York is the price. No, it’s not actually $6,30 because you have to add a 20% tip. And no, it’s not an option, they make sure you feel like a d*** if you just give them a smiley face. And I hope you’re not hungry as that microscopic cinnamon bun might drive the final tag up to $12. And given that Norway, one of the most expensive countries in the world (especially when it comes to food) opened the list, this should hurt even more.
Get a day job, NYC.
Love you though!

4. There’s some bad coffee etiquette in London
I love London, me and her have a very special relationship. And there are some amazing cafes and coffee companies that make it really hard to get bad coffee. This applies especially to East London and Soho, but really you can dictate a pretty high standard throughout zones 1 and 2.
What I find difficult to live with sometimes is how tiny a lot of cafes are and how overcrowded they get. Somehow, if you go to a nice cafe anywhere else in the world you’ll be able to walk inside without shrugging your shoulders up against your body like a bobsledder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not in London though! The general expectation is: slide in, try not to breathe too closely to anyone, get your coffee and get out. Forget sitting down. And that takes a lot of joy out of coffee drinking.
But try Tap Coffee, Kaffeine, Italo or Story Coffee for an unmistakably sublime London finish and possibly even a seat.

5. There’s some adorable coffee in Portugal
I know that some people would talk about France, and I do love dunking a croissant in my coffee, I’ll give them that. But for me Portugal does it better. Something about the size and choice of vessels (love having a small latte in a simple, thin glass!) as well as the pastry selection makes it extremely difficult to complain about.
The price of coffee in Portugal is an additional bonus. It’s as if someone had recognised espresso machine coffee as a very basic, if life-enhancing, commodity that should not be restricted to busy bodies and hipsters. In Portugal, the time you spend sipping on your tiny yet satisfying cafe au leche is unlimited.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only “but”, which probably doesn’t even apply to that many people, is that the Portuguese don’t really care about pleasing the more refined taste buds. Unless you seek out an artisan cafe, you basically get what you get. It’s good coffee but on the whole it won’t knock your socks off like the Italian juice.
Oh, and forget about vegan milk in a real Portugese caf. They don’t give a sh** about that nonsense.

6. LA doesn’t care that much about coffee
There’s a lot to be said about why living in LA doesn’t require that much coffee. First of all, there’s so much sun and jogging and freshly squeezed juices and kombucha on tap that a primitive caffeine fix is just not that essential. The it girl that trots around East Village with a paper coffee cup will swap it for a beetroot-celery-apple-ginger juice whilst she’s longboarding in Venice Beach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And sure enough, I didn’t pay that much attention to coffee in LA. There was just so much else to do. Yet still, I don’t remember getting any noticeably bad coffee in LA.... well maybe apart from the one in Universal Studios canteen. But that only proves the point - if you’re shooting an exciting new series surrounded by industry top dogs (which - let me make it clear - I was not doing, I was taken around on a friendly tour), you don’t need perfect coffee.
You’re on a pretty sweet natural high!
Fussy decaffeinated customer experience level: 6/10
7. I don’t care about coffee in Cape Town
Coffee culture has a way of mirroring gentrification. If you’re in an ungentrified area in a city and come across an outlet with a bit of scandinavian interior design, thick wooden tables or recycled furniture as well as a shiny new cadillac-of-an-espresso-machine, you feel safer. It’s strange to find that in a place such as Cape Town, as remote and “ethnically complicated” as they come and yet delivering the perfect vegan froth at the snap of your fingers.
So yes, although they are scarce and make you feel a bit like you’re trying to stay in your european bubble, you can find nice and often worky cafes in Cape Town. But why the hell would you want to go there, when you’re also surrounded by so much beauty and adventure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Take a coffee detox in Cape Town and hike up and down Table Mountain instead. Or drive up and down the coast and watch one of the most spectacular sunsets on earth!
Fussy decaffeinated customer experience level: 5/10
8. There’s some amazing coffee in Warsaw
Warsaw, my beloved hometown, has a difficult relationship with coffee. On the one hand, like everything in Poland it’s saturated with mainstream brands and coffee corporations. The first Polish cafe chain Coffee Heaven was bought out by Costa Coffee (insert puke emoji) and the more sophisticated Green Coffee was turned into Nero. This of course killed of most of the character that these independent Polish brands managed to create in their heart-warming outlets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the other hand, since approx 2015, smaller and more locally targeted cafes have been popping up all over the place. And most of them keep a fantastic standard of beans and make all sorts of coffee making techniques available to the general public. So I implore you to skip on Nero and try the likes of Cophi, Coffee Desk or Relaks.
Fussy decaffeinated customer experience level: 4/10
9. There is way too much bad coffee in Oxford
For a town hosting so much poignant brain power, Oxford has still a lot to learn when it comes to serving good coffee. It’s no secret that most English people are more into pubs than cafes and fair enough. But I seriously doubt that all those international scholars, prima sort professors and MBA high flyers run on builder’s tea alone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oxford simply has much more potential for great coffee experience - a well run cofee joint will immediately find customers. That’s why it’s disappointing that there are only a couple of decent joints scattered around it’s Harry Potteresque streets.
But you can prove me wrong - please send me your Oxford coffee list!
Fussy decaffeinated customer experience level: 3/10
10. There’s plenty of really bad coffee in Switzerland
I love Switzerland. The efficiency, the timely trains, the impeccable landshafts. Your mind can truly be at rest as the Swiss are taking care of everything. And yet, I dare say it does not apply to coffee.
Sure, you can find perfectly crafted cafes in Zurich, it is after all an extremely affluent Eauropean capital. But venture out anywhere and coffee turns into something resembling something a friend of mine compares to “milled mammoth bones brew”.
Why oh why, Switzerland?!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fussy decaffeinated customer experience level: 2/10 Now, there’s really no need to venture out anywhere that goes below 2/10, unless of course you’re having the adventure of a lifetime and coffee is beside the point. But if, like me, you need the taste of a perfectly crafted coffee to feel grounded and complete at your destination, there’s no need to go there.

Chad and the Incel Chapter 3
Tumblr media
Rated: M
Fandom: Original Fiction (but inspired by the Virgin vs Chad meme)
Relationship type: Male/Male with a bit of Female/Female (the lesbians are adorable, btw) and unrequited Male/Female (in other words, the guys are bisexual).
Description: Chad is, well, a Chad, or at least he looks like one. He’s got his sights set on the cool nerd Becky and enlists the help of her shy incel ex-friend Noah, offering to help him get the gorgeous girl (Stacy) he desperately wants. Noah is reluctant to help, believing that he will be stuck in inceldom forever, but Chad’s interest in his life gives him hope. When their plans go awry, they start turning their romantic attention towards each other.
Content Warning: Given the subject matter, you can guess that this story has dark themes in it, such as suicide and self-harm (plus the mental health issues that often cause them), sexism, slut-shaming homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. There is also swearing and some mentions of sex but nothing too explicit (hence the M rating as opposed to an Explicit rating).
3rd Post: [Experiment] (POLL) Who is the enemy?
Tyrone was at it again. He was going on and on about the other team in their upcoming game being a bunch of pussies, despite knowing that most of the other team’s members were twice his size.
Chad ignored him, preferring to smile at Noah, who ignored him. The squeak of sneakers against the unpolished wooden floor filled the sweaty room.
‘What’s the point of bragging when they’re not even here?’ Chad finally asked Tyrone while picking up a dodgeball. He frowned when he saw Noah just standing there but gave him a thumbs up when he instinctively caught a ball. Noah glared at him before pushing his fringe over his eyes and hiding behind it.
Tyrone’s glare was even more vicious. ‘What, you scared? Think the other team can hear us all the way from their shitstain of a school?’ He hurled a ball at Becky, who fumbled but ended up catching the ball. She smirked at him before frowning as if she’s made a huge mistake.
She was right, in a way. ‘You said dodgeball was the moron’s sport!’ Tyrone yelled. ‘You a hypocrite or something?’
Becky looked at the ground. ‘Middle school doesn’t count,’ she murmured. She then raised her voice. ‘We all said stupid things then. You once bragged about sleeping with a teacher and there was a needless investigation all because of you.’
The teacher blew her whistle. ‘Tyrone, go to the side of the court. Becky, focus on the game.’
Instead of following orders, Tyrone stormed up to Becky. Chad’s blood became magma just waiting for him to erupt.
‘So now you‘re talking again? Decided not to be a frigid bitch? It’s been a while.  Were you afraid that if you talked in homeroom that Shakespeare’s jizz’ll come out of your mouth?’
Before the teacher could chastise him for using foul language, Chad shoved him to the ground. He leaned down and grabbed him by the collar. Tyrone flailed his arms about in the hopes of landing a punch but each punch had the strength of a baby mouse-deer. Chad’s punches, on the other hand, carried the strength of an African elephant whose family was poached. Soon Tyrone’s face was covered with blood. Chad gave him one last shove into the ground before standing up and looking at Becky with a hopeful smile. Becky scrunched her nose at him before crossing her arms and looking away.
Noah, on the other hand, stared at him with wide eyes and a mouth that constantly shifted from a grin to a frown and vice-versa.
Chad was sent to the Principal’s office where he was given three weeks in detention rather than a suspension or expulsion like one would expect.
‘I know how you boys are,’ the Principal said. ‘Just don’t do it again.’
Chad returned to class just as the bell for lunchtime buzzed around the gym. He waved at Becky as she brushed past him, refusing to look at him.
He grabbed her arm but Becky tore her arm away from him.
‘What do you want?’
Chad smiled at her. ‘So, uh, what did you think?’
Becky closed her eyes and sighed. ‘I have no interest in your penis-measuring contest with Tyrone. And besides, you know he’s a lot weaker than you. You may as well have beaten up a baby. Not exactly impressive.’
Chad’s blood went from magma to ice, rendering the act of movement intensely difficult. All he could do was shiver as Becky continued to glare at him.
‘Are we done here?’ Becky asked. Chad paused before nodding.
Noah left the gym last, waiting for everyone else to go before him. When he saw Chad he did the same smile-frown-smile thing he was doing before.
‘You okay?’ Chad asked him.
Noah, caught off guard, stepped back into the doorway. ‘Uh, yeah. I’ve never seen a real white knight before.’
Chad flexed his arm. ‘Finally someone appreciates what I did.’
Noah looked down at different spots on the ground, not focusing on a single spot for very long.
‘I don’t know if I appreciate it, per se,’ he whispered.
He didn’t talk to Chad for the remainder of the day.
At home he decided to make two posts to Incels.me, one a blog post about the day.
Anicel1919- [Soy] A Chad resorts to being a White Knight
You’d think a Chad wouldn’t need to do this since he can get any femoid he wants, but I guess we live in a weird sexual economy where even a Chad has to prove himself to a femoid to get her approval. I swear to God, feminists ruin everything.
So there’s this Tyrone (or at least, he’s named Tyrone. Doesn’t look like one.) who’s picking on this Becky that Chad likes, so he beats him up.
I’m honestly kind of conflicted. It was kind of nice to see him be all brave but at the same time I remember I used to be a white knight until I learned it was pointless for me. Femoids only care about chivalry when someone who isn’t a sub-8 is doing it.
Or at least that’s what I thought. I overheard Chad talking to the girl afterwards and she wasn’t impressed. What an ungrateful bitch! I bet she thinks she has to play hard to get or some bullshit like that.
He then posted a poll.

Chads
A few days later, there were fairly even splits between each answer, though, to Noah’s surprise, the Chads option was a little smaller in popularity.
‘Huh…’ he whispered while tapping his fingers against the desk in his room.
At school, Noah stood next to Stacy’s locker. He reminded himself of when Chad took the initiative to defend Becky and that, while it didn’t work on someone like Becky, it could work on Stacy.
His heart stopped for a moment and then quickly went into overdrive when he saw Stacy saunter towards her locker. His smile faltered when he realised that she was going past her locker.
He followed her, making sure he was a few steps behind so as not to look suspicious.
She strutted to the library, which Becky was just then entering. Noah hid behind a corner just outside the library.
‘Um, uh, can I… talk to you?’ Stacy asked, her confident walk collapsing into a pigeon-toed, slightly bent-over stand.
Becky walked backwards out of the library and smiled softly. ‘Sure.’ Stacy stood there in silence, fidgeting with the hem of her short sundress. ‘Sure,’ Becky repeated a little louder, sending a shock through Stacy’s spine.
‘Oh, yeah. So, um, You’re really… prart… uh, I meant to say pretty but then I ended up trying to say smart and they just kind of… mushed together.’ Becky frowned and raised an eyebrow. ‘I’m sorry! So, this is going to sound really weird and I get it if you end up being grossed out by me, but… I kind of… like you.’
By this point Stacy was covering her face. Becky moved her eyes from side to side.
‘Oh. I… I find you to be pretty as well. Maybe not ‘smart’ since I don’t know your grades, but you also seem kind enough. I should probably focus on my studies, though. I’m not grossed out by you. I like you too, in fact.’
Stacy nodded, her lips contorted into a smile that didn’t belong. ‘That’s fair. Um, if end up being less busy for whatever reason, let me know.’
With a nod of her own, Becky went back into the library. Noah’s nails tried to dig into the wall by the corner but this only hurt him. His mouth was wide open and so were his eyes.
He took out his phone and messaged Chad.
The school library’s kind of shit, so let’s go to this library near my place today. We should look for books about seduction.
Chad agreed and headed there after detention was over. This particular library, a wide one-story building that stood in front of a lake, made him forget to breathe for a moment. Everything, from the floor to the desks to the bookcases, was covered with spray paint, the vagueness of each tag implying that this was an intentional decision on the part of the library owners. Chad was careful with his steps until he realised that the broken mirror shards on the floor were stuck to it and wouldn’t hurt him. The lights flickered but were still bright enough to read a book under. The bookshelves themselves were shaped like high school lockers with each ‘locker’ opened. The library smelled of paint and old paper.
Noah snickered at Chad’s dropped jaw. ‘Cool, huh? The selection’s even cooler. I’d spend the rest of my life here if I could.’
Much to Chad’s surprise, Noah practically skipped to the dated computer in the corner of the room. To even more of Chad’s surprise, the computer worked like new and had modern features despite looking like it belonged in the early 90s. Noah typed the words ‘seduce women’ into the library search engine, causing Chad to wince and look from side to side. He relaxed his shoulders when he saw that the coast was clear.
Noah headed to one of the bookshelves and searched for the book. He then headed to another section and pulled out what looked like an anime, but as a book. Chad held back laughter when he saw the title of this book-anime. ‘Is it Wrong to Seduce Girls During the Zombie Apocalypse?’
‘Is that an anime?’ Chad couldn’t help but ask as they sat at two oak desks that the library owners had pushed next to each other.
Noah scrunched his nose up for a second but let it go and smiled when he noticed the twinkle of genuine curiosity in Chad’s eyes.
‘It’s a manga, actually. Like anime, but in comic book form.’ Chad nodded in understanding. ‘You can learn a lot about Japanese culture from reading these. I also have a feeling if I try a bunch of stuff from these, one of the techniques is bound to work.’
‘Is... that how it works?’ Chad asked as nicely as he could.
Noah glared at him. ‘Shut up.’ He abruptly opened the manga and pushed the other book towards Chad. ‘Get a Date in Five Easy Steps,’ it read. Chad held up the book and marveled at how thick it was.
Instead of reading the book, he stared at Noah, who was flipping through pages as fast as a competitive speed reader. His thick eyebrows went all the way down to his eyes and his lips went red from him biting them.
‘So, uh, what made you decide to come here?’ Chad asked him, looking away and trying to play off the ever so slight speed increase in his heartbeat as nothing.
Noah slammed the manga shut, his tears welling up. ‘Well, I… I saw Stacy… I saw her… I saw her…’
‘Are you about to-’
‘No I’m not! You think I’m a faggot or something like that?’ Chad felt tempted to look left to right again as an old memory threatened to punch its way back into his consciousness. ‘Anyway, Stacy… confessed to Becky.’
‘Wait, what? So Stacy’s a…’
‘I guess so. Well, unless she gets asked out by some Chad, I’m guessing.’ Noah lowered his voice to a spat out whisper. ‘Fucking femoids.’
‘Fem-what?’
‘Femoids. You know, women. They don’t even deserve that name. They’re all sluts. If you want to be shorter, you can call them foids.’
‘Is this to do with that black… pell thing?’
‘Blackpilled. Yeah. I’m an incel.’ Noah groaned at Chad’s question marked face. ‘Involuntary celibate. I don’t want to be celibate, but I can’t help it when no woman even talks to me.’
‘Have you tried talking to them?’
‘Don’t give me that shit. You know if I tried that a girl would just call me ugly or creepy and run away screaming. I’d rather not end up in a jail cell for a crime I didn’t commit.’
‘So why are we here?’
Noah was silent for a moment. ‘Well, to be honest, you managed to fool me for a second.’ He stood up, put the books away and headed out of the library. Chad chased after him.
‘We can still hang out, right?’
‘Why would someone like you want to be friends with someone like me?’
Chad shrugged. ‘I guess you’re kind of interesting. I want to ask you more questions about this blackpill thing.’
Noah paused, then nodded with a frown. ‘I’ll… see you at school, then.’ He turned around and waved goodbye with his back to Chad. He then put his headphones on and slowly inhaled and exhaled.
At the school library, Becky kept reading the same sentence multiple times as Stacy’s words resonated in her mind. She eventually realised that she was playing with her ponytail and gave up on reading the textbook.
‘Shit,’ she whispered.

S.O.S. Emergency Food Rations Review
S.O.S. Emergency Food Rations
SOS Emergency Food Rations are typical of many emergency food rations found on the market. They provide 36oo calories over three days and are approved by the Coast Guard.
They have a 5-year shelf life that makes them even more appealing as they can be placed in an emergency kit and left there for a long period of time without needing to be changed regularly.
[wc_toggle title="Table of Contents" padding="" border_width="" class="" layout="box"]
Who should be Interested in SOS Emergency Food Rations?
Features
Pros
Cons
Conclusion
[/wc_toggle]
Who should be Interested?
If you're putting together an emergency kit, you should be interested in these types of rations. They're readily available to eat because they don't require any kind of preparation.
This makes them great in the first few hours of an emergency when you need calories but don't have time to cook or prepare other types of food.
Features
SOS Emergency Food Rations contain 3600 calories per package and are divided into 9 – 400 calorie bars. One package is meant to last three days.
Each bar is individually wrapped to preserve the taste and keep moisture out.
Comes in cinnamon and coconut flavors.
Designed to be eaten without preparation.
High energy/size ratio.
Non-thirst provoking.
Small, compact and lightweight.
Suitable for storage from -22 degrees F to 149 degrees F.
5-year shelf life.
Ingredients: Sugar, Enriched Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Vegetable Shortening (Soybean & Cottonseed Oils), Corn Starch, Wheat Gluten, Dextrose, Desiccated Coconut Preserved with Sodium Metabisulfite, Corn Syrup, Contains less than 2% of the following: Soy Lecithin, Guar Gum, Calcium Propionate Preservative, Citric Acid, Salt, Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Niacin, Vitamin A, Palmitate, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate.
Weight: 1.6 lb.
Dimensions: 5″ x 2″ x 4.5″
  Pros
Each package contains 9 individually wrapped bars. This means that even after you open the strong mylar outer wrapper you still have an additional layer of protection for your emergency food.
These contain a high amount of sugar which makes them taste pretty good. Add in the fact that you can choose from coconut or cinnamon and these taste better than you'd expect.
They're designed for situation when you may be without water so they don't need any kind of preparation and they don't make you thirsty when you eat them.
Cons
SOS Emergency Food Rations suffer from the same major drawback that other emergency rations do...they're designed to give you a minimal amount of calories to keep you alive. They are not going to keep you full or happy.
The consistency of these rations is a little crumbly and greasy. It's more like a cookie than some other emergency rations. This means that they can crumble if tossed in a pack or bounced around a lot.
  Conclusion
The SOS Emergency Food Rations aren't as well known as some other brands out there but they're more than adequate as an emergency food source. The calorie count isn't going to keep you happy but it is going to keep you going when you really need it.
These emergency bars are just that...an emergency food ration. They aren't designed for daily consumption and you wouldn't want to eat them every day anyway.
If you use these as an initial food source after a disaster you'll be good to go, just don't make SOS Emergency Food Rations your primary food storage item!

SOS Food Labs S.O.S. Emergency Rations
Our Rating: (5/5)
SOS Food Labs is a company that specializes in the making of emergency food kits which are high in calories and perfect for your backpack. Their S.O.S. Emergency Rations Food Bars are among their best-selling products since they are extremely compact, packed full of the much-needed calories, and securely sealed in order to last at least a few years.
These food bars come in vacuumed packages which can be re-sealed after opening. Each package contains 9 food bars with each having around 400 calories. The total calorie count of each package is more than 3600 calories, making it enough for a single person to survive for 3 full days. On average, you need 3 of those bars per day to get the minimum amount of calories for your body to cover its basic energy costs.
The bars are US Coast Guard approved and have a shelf life of around 5 years no matter the conditions in which they are stored thanks to that vacuum seal.
In terms of flavor, these food rations have a cinnamon and coconut mix to them. More importantly, they aren’t thirst inducing like some other cheaper food bars. They are also quite solid, making them hard to crumble in their packaging. The only downsides here are that you need a lot of those if you plan on preparing for a 10+ day emergency. On top of that, you won’t be getting much of your body’s nutrient needs from these bars, apart from basic carbs, proteins, and fats.
Pros
Excellent price to value
Very energy-rich
Air-sealed package
Compact
Can help you survive for 6 days
Good flavor
Non-thirst provoking formula
Cons
Not a very long shelf life
You need more packages for a longer emergency
Doesn’t address the complex nutrition needs of our bodies

Wise Company Emergency Food Supply
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
Another company that is pioneering the emergency food kit industry is the Wise Company. Their emergency food supply buckets are one of the most delicious and flavor-rich out there but come at a slightly higher price per serving than most other brands that produce emergency supply buckets. Brands like Augason Farms have their rations down to around 0.50$ per serving, while they maintain similar shelf life and meal quality. So, Wise Company’s near 2 dollars per serving must be justified, right? Well, let’s find out!
The main thing with this supply bucket is the insane amount of diversity in the meals. There are a total of 120 meals inside which include:
Chicken noodle soups
Creamy pasta
Tomato basil soups
Southwest beans and rice
Potato and chicken pot pie
Cheesy lasagna
Chili mac
Heart tortilla soup
And many others! That meal diversity combined with the delicious recipes Wise Company uses for their servings is one of the main reasons they keep such a high price tag. Basically, if you want to enjoy delicious and nutritious meals during a natural disaster or other types of emergencies, this bucket is the perfect addition to your shelter. All the packages inside the bucket have a shelf life of up to 25 years when stored properly and can be prepared when mixed with water only.
The downsides here are that the meals aren’t very rich on calories and won’t be good for a long duration if you have to feed more than 1-2 people. That, combined with the high price tag, makes this bucket a hard-to-pick options for large families on a budget.
Pros
25 years shelf life
Delicious and diverse recipes
120 servings
Easy to prepare
Perfect for a shelter
Can help a person last up to 16 days
Cons
Very expensive
Meals aren’t very calorie-rich
Not enough calories/servings for a large family

Augason Farms Deluxe Emergency Food Supply
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
The ultimate leader in budget emergency kits that taste amazing is Augason Farms. Their Deluxe emergency food supply bucket has 200 servings which are enough to last a single person 30 days thanks to the high calorie count in each of the meal packages. Moreover, each serving here costs less than half a dollar, making this the cheapest emergency meal options out there with such a diversity in the recipes.
There are 12 meal varieties here ranging from banana chips to cheesy broccoli, chicken soups, and other delicious sweet desserts like maple brown sugar oatmeal. These desserts are the main reason why this bucket contains twice the calories of other similar emergency supplies. There are more than 37,000 calories inside which can last you around 30 days with an average daily calorie intake of around 1200 calories (or around 6-7 servings).
Within the bucket, you also get a 30-day meal planner which is a unique take on the whole emergency situation which other companies are quickly catching up to. This food supply also has a shelf life of 25 years which is among the highest in the industry. As a whole, there aren’t many disadvantages here apart from the lack of salty recipe varieties and the bulky footprint of the whole bucket.
Pros
High-calorie count per serving
Can last a single person 30 days
Long shelf life (25 years)
Easy to prepare meals
Excellent for shelters
Cons
Quite bulky. Only suitable for shelters
A lot of sweet dessert recipes

NorthWest Fork Gluten-Free Emergency Food Supply
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
NorthWest Fork Gluten-Free emergency food supply takes a slightly different approach to emergency food kits and adds a bit of a progressive touch to their meals. What I mean by that is that they are Kosher, Non-GMO, and Vegan – a combination unique to the whole industry. And you would think that this would spike up the price but it actually doesn’t and this box full of meals is actually an affordable and delicious option for families or people wanting to stock their shelters.
The meals here are rationed in 6 bags with each containing 15 servings (pouches). Each bag is good for 5 days (3 meals per day) and gives you all the needed calories and nutrition to keep your body running. All of the 6 bags are resealable and are good for 2 months after being opened. The meals here are contained in Mylar Bags with oxygen absorbers which prevents degradation and adds to the 10+ years of shelf life. When you mix these with water (the hotter the better) they result in a serving of around a pint of food.
The star feature here is, without a doubt, the fact that all the meals here are GMO-free, vegan, kosher, soy, nut, and gluten-free. There are also quite the diverse meal choices ranging from strawberry banana oatmeal to green pea soup and chipotle stew. Everything inside this box is good for a single person for 30 days or a family of 4 for roughly 8 days. Despite the slightly high price, this food supply checks almost all the boxes.
Pros
Rich variety of recipes
30-days supply for a single person
Easy to prepare meals
Vegan and GMO-free
Can be stockpiled
Cons
Slightly short shelf life
Higher than average price

Sustain Supply Co. Premium Emergency Survival Bag
Our Rating: (4.5/5)
The Premium Emergency Survival Bag by Sustain Supply Co. is a slightly different product than the rest in this guide. Instead of giving you a purely food-oriented emergency supply, they give you a survivalist dream containing all the necessary tools and features to guarantee your survival in or out of your house.
This backpack has all the essentials to last you and one more person full 72 hours after a disaster. Inside, there are:
12 meals
2 refillable water carton bottles
2 water filtration straws
4 snap lights
1 lantern
A flashlight
There are also things like first aid kit, bath wipes, emergency blankets, bowls, utensils, and even a portable stove that can be used to cook food. Everything here is meant to be used by two people for around 3 days, as this is considered the time needed for emergency teams to get to your location. Apart from ensuring your immediate survival, this backpack also makes sure that you can last a while longer even without its core food and water supplies. You get a fire-starter, tinder, and a lot of light options. While it is a little more expensive than other emergency food supplies, it is actually a great value for its money all things considered. There is even a 4-person backpack option that is an even better deal.
Pros
Comes with all the essentials to survive the first 3 days
Has tools that can ensure your survival after that
Comes with a stove, fire-starter, and tinder
Good for two people
Decent price to value ratio
Cons
Backpack quality isn’t stellar
Not enough food for more than 3 days

Survival Tabs 60-Day Emergency Food Ration
Our Rating: (4/5)
The Survival Tabs is a company or rather a product that tries to change the way we look at emergency food supplies. While other brands are focusing on diverse recipes and meal plans, this 60-day emergency food ration focuses on sweet tabs that are rich in calories and have all the essential vitamins and minerals your body needs to sustain itself.
Even if those tabs aren’t very diverse in their flavors, are made with a high-quality protein and are also GMO-free and Gluten-free. They are also made with a formula that maximizes the body’s absorption rate, which is typically low for emergency food kit meals. With this package, you get 4 bottles that have 180 tables each. With 12 chewable tablets per servings, that makes 60 servings. Here is my issue, though – the company states that this is enough to last a single person 60 days, even though this makes barely 250 calories per day which isn’t enough to sustain a human body.
What these tabs are good for, though, are supplementing your other emergency food supply. Normal food supplies aren’t rich in vitamins and minerals and these survival tabs will be a great addition to any disaster shelter stockpile and will make for a delicious dessert after each meal. Still, I have to call them out on their slightly false advertising.
Pros
Long shelf life
Excellent addition to a full-on emergency food supply
High-protein formula
Excellent body absorption
Delicious taste
GMO and gluten-free
Cons
Not enough to support a person on their own for the stated 60 days
Can barely last a week on their own with no extra supplies
Expensive

Survival Food Kits Buyer’s Guide
Whether you are preparing for an expanding wildfire that you relocate you from your home or a hurricane that will pin your family to your shelter for days, you should always have food and water at the top of your priority list. While water is fairly simple to come by in most places, food that is nutrient-rich and long-lasting requires a bit of prior preparation. To understand food kits better, we must first answer one important question…
What exactly is a survival food kit?
Survival food kits are basically packs of dried and/or canned food that are good to last you and your family for up to 14 days. This time frame is set by the number of days needed for emergency services to clean up the site and rescue everyone involved in the disaster or emergency.
While some kits provide you with freeze-dried meals that can be prepared when just mixed with water, some other kits emphasize on calorie-count by having dried fortified food bars that are easy to carry around and are extremely dense in calories. When it comes to portability, we must make one clear distinction that divides most survival food kits into two types…
The two main types
Depending on whether or not the food kit is meant to be carried in a backpack or stockpiled in a shelter or your home, there are two different types of survival food kits. Those are:
Cabin/Stockpiling Emergency Food Kits/Supplies – In most cases, these come in the form of a large bucket that contains various meals according to the meal plan of the kit. These meals can be prepared when mixed with water or be eaten straight away, depending on the size of the bucket. Most of these emergency supplies are good for up to a few days for a whole family or more than a week for a single person. Still, there are some extremely large food supply kits that are good for up to 30 days. The main benefit of these kits is that they are very rich in terms of nutrition variety and will provide all the vitamins and minerals a human body needs along with a minimum daily calorie supply. They are, however, very limited in terms of portability and are suitable only for stockpiling or preparing a shelter.
Backpack emergency food kits – Unlike the previous kind, these are very compact and are easy to carry in your backpack in case of an emergency. In most cases, they come in the form of dry bars that are extremely rich in calories and are air-sealed in order to withstand all sorts of conditions. They have a long shelf life which allows you to stock up if you need a lot of those packages for your family. While they are rich in calories, they are often limited in terms of vitamins and minerals and struggle to supply your body with its full nutrition spectrum. They also don’t need any type of preparation furthering their theme of portability and convenience.
Now that we’ve gone through the basics, let’s dive deeper into the features that you need to look for when you’re choosing an emergency food kit…
Important Features
As with any food you get, there are quite a lot of things that you should look for if you want to have a nutrient-rich stockpile that will not only keep you full but will keep your body at optimal health. Here are the things that you should pay attention to:
Type
Number of servings
Shelf Life
Nutrition and calories
Meal Variety and Taste
Portability and Preparation
Preservatives
Packaging
Type
As we already discussed, with survival food kits, you can pretty much choose between buckets and food bars which are vacuum sealed and quite compact. Buckets are the way to go if you’re stockpiling a shelter you have or a basement that you use in cases of tornadoes or hurricanes, while food bars are the best way to pack up a survival backpack or an emergency kit that you can quickly take with you in case you have to leave.
There are products out there that combine the best of all worlds by selling you a backpack full of all the essential tools to prep the food you get (both in bars and in packets that are prepared with water only). The Sustain Supply Co. Premium emergency survival bag is one of the best examples for such a combo product but it does cost quite much more than the other food kits.
Number of servings
The number of servings is going to be determined mainly by the number of people that will depend on that survival food kit. Most buckets will have around 100-150 servings which is more than enough to feed a 4-person family for around 10 days. Always account for unexpected meals that are given to other people outside of your initial circle. Apart from the number of servings, you should look at how nutritious and caloric each serving is but more on that later…
Shelf Life
The shelf life is, without a doubt, one of the most important features of anything that is emergency related. When preparing for an emergency you don’t actually know when it will happen. It can be next month or in 15 years. This is why emergency food kits should have a long shelf life. Most premium companies pride themselves with kits that can last up to 25 years if kept well. Still, some aren’t as long-lasting and you should always account for that when buying them. If you get food kits which have shorter shelf lives, make sure you mark that with a stick-it note on them so that you are constantly reminded if you have to change them when you go to the shelter or inspect your emergency backpack.
Nutrition and calories
Your intake of calories is what keeps your body at a constant weight and health. Eating more calories results in a caloric surplus with the body storing them as fats. Eating less, however, will end up starving the body in the long run. On average, a healthy female needs around 2000 calories per day, while males need around 2500. That, of course, varies from person to person based on their weight, height, and age, as well as their activity levels. Athletes often need 1000-1500 calories on top of the daily average just to cover their energy losses through exercises. In an emergency situation, the goal is to keep your caloric intake to the minimum that your body needs to sustain all of your systems. Moreover, eating the same amount of calories in evenly distributed meals throughout the day guarantees a better resorption rate than eating them all at once. Large meals lead to the biggest energy and nutrient losses due to the inability of our bodies to process everything we’ve eaten in that large meal.
Nutrition refers to the overall composition of the food inside or in other words, the diversity of the ingredients (proteins, carbs, fats). Foods that are rich in carbs only aren’t very nutritious by definition, even though they are good for your body’s energy consumption. To be an all-around balanced meal, it must contain all three of the main nutrients plus minerals and vitamins.
Meal Variety and Taste
The fact that these kits are meant for an emergency situation doesn’t mean that they have to be bland and identical when it comes to the different servings and meals in them. Different flavor-rich meals will not only keep your GI tract at its optimal state but will also boost morale. Nothing feels like an emergency more than having nothing to eat or having to eat the same tasteless food bar over and over day after day.
Portability and Preparation
We sort of already covered portability when we discussed the types of emergency food kits. If you need something more static, go for the large buckets with 100+ servings in them. For backpacks, I recommend survival tabs or dry food bars.
In terms of preparation, most food kits are going to be prepared with water only. They typically don’t need heating up or cooking but rather mixing them with water only. Some freeze-dried meat buckets can be either eaten straight out of the meal pouch or cooked in water to create various soups or stews.
Preservatives
Even if it is sometimes hard to give certain foods a long shelf life without preservatives, try looking for food kits that rely on good packaging and solid meal choices rather than ones that have a quarter of a century shelf life.
Packaging
The last thing I want to talk about is the packaging. Look for kits that are packed into smaller meals or individual rations (either for a meal or for a day). Kits that are divided into bigger rations are suitable for families as you will need to prepare larger meals at a time. Food bars that aren’t vacuum-sealed won’t last long and will almost certainly crumble inside the packaging if you aren’t careful with them. The lack of air in some vacuum packages keeps them fresh and also keeps them intact.
Top Survival Food Brands
Some of the best brands that make survival food kits are Augason Farms, Valley Food Storage, My Patriot Supply, Mountain House. There are some smaller brands like Emergency Essentials, Survival Frog, and The Ready Store which are also worth mentioning due to their high-quality products with decent value.
While most of these brands have paused production right now, their products are still (mostly) available on the Amazon store. Brands like Augason Farms sell some of the best price-to-value survival buckets which cost around a hundred dollars and are good to last you up to a month. Mountain House, albeit a little expensive, produces some of the finest food kits in terms of flavor and nutrition qualities. Valley Food Storage is another great-tasting option that comes at a bargain price, although they aren’t taking full orders now as well. They offer 1-year survival food packages which are delivered in 4 parts 3 months apart due to the high demand right now.
Frequently Asked Questions
What foods should I stockpile for survival?
Some of the main things you should consider when choosing your stockpiling food picks is having plenty of frozen fruits, veggies, and canned food. These will be rich on vitamins and minerals enough to sustain you without a proper rich diet. Canned beans are an excellent choice since they are rich in plant proteins and zinc. Canned fish is a good source of omega fatty acids, while whole grains will give you fibers and iron.
If you want to stock up mostly in terms of high-calorie numbers, put your stock on dry pasta, white rice, hard grains, canned spaghetti, and other high-carb foods. Those will give you plenty of energy, although they won’t be really rich in other nutrients.
What single food can you survive on the longest?
While it isn’t a good idea to eat only one type of food since that will eventually lead to certain deficiencies, the potato is a good example of a food that can sustain human life for longer periods. Whole nations have survived on mostly potato-based diets for centuries. In other words, the potato has proven itself as a Mars-worthy food when it comes to sustainability.
What is the best canned food to stockpile?
While we already established that canned beans are an excellent choice for protein and vitamins, other canned foods are also great for stockpiling. Diced tomatoes, corn, different soups, spam, tune, and vegetable medley are all great picks for a nutrient-rich canned stockpile.
Final Words
One of the most important takeaways from this guide is that the best survival food kits should be rich in nutrients, diverse in terms of their meals, and should be calorie-rich in order to provide a better survival chance. Depending on the type of survival kit you pick, you should be focusing either on calories or taste and convenience. Shelter kits will be much more nutrient-rich and will be far more delicious. They are, however, hard to carry around and suitable only for static stockpiling, while true emergency kits can be put in your backpack and still provide you with a few days worth of calories.
