Common Application Essay Writing

Thick eyeglasses buried behind scratched up laptops. Battered old copies of Walden. Red soccer cleats tapping in a jubilant pattern. A table nursing a steaming cup of café mocha.
I sit back and observe all the readers and coffee-lovers of our town united in this calm and comfortable atmosphere. I recognize a few familiar faces seated at their usual tables – the amiable man at his corner seat with his New York Times; the mother, both content and cautious, juggling her two toddlers at the center round table; and the struggling student with his face buried in his computer screen.
Their habitual steps towards their usual tables evoke an empathetic sense of comfort as I, too, curl up in my corner on the cushioned chair and indulge myself with the aroma of coffee and freshly opened novels. In the embrace of my surroundings at this corner café, I feel at ease to peak through the doors of my curious and creative nature; I feel inspired.
In reality, I am granted only a few hours of these tranquil moments, but for that exact reason I devour every whiff of cream on my cappuccino and scribble down every observation in my sketchbook. The secret to this determination is within my attitude – that of a devoted mind poised to observe and appreciate my surroundings. The quiet young man’s slack-jawed awe when witnessing the bravery of his hero in the comic book, the sweet embrace shared by two old schoolmates, and even the tears of the girl with her flushed cheeks – such human qualities draw my heart towards their stories.
My curiosity triggers questions and conclusions – why does that young man in the suit look so anxious? Who is that older man that has approached and greeted him? As the two men sit at their tables with subtle tension, I surmise that a job interview is occurring. The scene touches a part of my memory of when I, too, experienced an interview. In that moment, I suddenly revisit the chills of anxiety and excitement I felt before. Embracing this empathy, I cheer on the young man in my mind and establish a covert bond with the once-stranger whom I now recognize and latently connect. I then quickly sketch the precious scene. Every person has a history, and each individual is a parent’s precious son or daughter. Joy, pain, anger, patience, and endurance are found in every sip of coffee, gesture, and word. As I observe everyone around me, I am able to excavate the bones of the ideas that link everyone in a common whole. I am then able to layer, build, and understand my own identity which is largely inspired by humanity and its connections.
After all, my understanding of humans and our community is this: We are all, in our own ways, individuals and reflect, with every detail, our diversity. Intuitively, we must then also remember that in order to understand and improve ourselves, we must behold the qualities that link each person to another and embrace compassion. We must hold the ability to see, within each person, ourselves.
This very process can be accomplished in every street, building, and seat. My predilection is in the worn-cushioned chair in the corner café, where the human nature of each individual reveals itself in the pool of novels, coffee, and tea.

Did you know Princeton has a secretive eating club system?
Not kidding. It’s like Hogwarts houses, but make it Ivy League and extremely well-fed. 🍽️
There are 11 eating clubs lined up on Prospect Avenue—each with its own vibe, culture, and mysterious selection process. Some are super exclusive and use a process called “bicker” (yes, that’s really what it’s called 😬), while others are open to anyone who signs up.
They’re not quite fraternities. Not quite dining halls.
They’re very Princeton.
Honestly? It’s a little Gossip Girl, a little Great Gatsby, and a lot of preppy tradition.
❓Would you join one?

In a world that glorifies hustle and constant connection, JOMO is a quiet rebellion. It’s the peaceful, content feeling of choosing rest over rush, solitude over social pressure, presence over performance.
Embracing JOMO means saying no without guilt, unplugging without FOMO, and reclaiming your time, energy, and attention. It’s not about missing out; it’s about choosing what really matters to you.

✨ Spellcheck is Your Friend (But It’s Not Psychic) ✨
Listen. We’ve all been there. You’re writing something brilliant: an essay, a blog post, a caption for your favorite pic of your cat. It flows so well you feel like Shakespeare with a caffeine addiction. Then you post it … and someone replies with:
“Did you mean ‘their’ instead of ‘there’?”
😳 Cue the existential crisis.
Here’s the thing: spellcheck can catch a lot, but it can’t catch everything. Especially when it comes to homophones: words that sound the same but mean very different things (e.g., their/there/they’re, to/too/two, your/you’re).
Letting one of these slip through might not ruin your message, but it can mess with your credibility. It’s like wearing a super cute outfit with mismatched socks; you still look good, but something’s just a little off.
🔗 Speaking of mistakes that can hurt your writing, check out the 5 errors you should avoid on your college essays.
