Why ?!

Out of authenticity grows abundance…

I’ve been thinking about authenticity a lot lately, and what it means to me to be authentic.

It used to really get to me when people would copy my work — recreate a shoot I did, legitimately rip off an entire look I created, or just straight up copy things about my business/stuff from my website — and if I’m being totally transparent, it still gets to me sometimes.

But then I remember something a dear friend said to me once, very confidently, ‘I don’t 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 competition.’ I laughed, and she went on to elaborate that no one is her competition because no one will ever be her, and she will never be anyone else. Even if they copy her, even if she straight up gave them step-by-step detailed instructions on how to recreate her work, it’ll never be the same as if it were coming from her hands, her eyes, her brain.

So much of creating art comes from seeing other art, taking inspiration from it, and making something of your own. Learning from others is essential to an artist’s growth — and it benefits both the student and the teacher. As a growing artist, it’s totally okay to take inspiration from other people, but you’re not doing anyone any favors by copying someone else’s work or business model, and in turn, not giving space and energy to your own authentic voice. And from the other side of the same coin, sharing some of yourself (whether directly or indirectly) to help someone else grow their voice doesn’t diminish or replace yours.
