A five minute PYZ80 feature you can use right now

Do you use conditional compilation already?  I've been putting off adopting this good habit for so long.  But it should make things so much easier.

When you've got a big project it can be really useful to turn off things for the time being.  Like gravity, for example.  Or particle effects.  Or something that could be breaking your new code, but you want it turned off just to prove it's not the source of a bug.

If you're like me, you spend ages spelunking through your code working out which lines of code to comment out for some test, then remembering what to turn back on.  And at some point, you get it wrong and the build breaks.  Arg.

Isn't there an easier way?  Yes, and it's been under my very nose AND I KNEW ABOUT IT and didn't use it.  I'm an idiot:

CONDITIONAL COMPILATION

1) In the main program, put a list of your toggles you want to be able to switch on or off:

    particles.on: equ On

I have defined On and Off as separate equates.  And Yes and No, Success and Failure etc etc.

2) In the module for the routine, write a tiny "quit if not on" routine, and bookend it with the magic assembler directive:

        if defined (DEBUG)     particles.check_on:         ld a,particles.on         cp On         ret z         pop hl ; Junk return address if quitting         ret         endif 3) In the maintenance routines themselves, add in a check before starting any real work:

    particle.clear_data:          if defined (DEBUG)         call particles.check_on         endif         ;... rest of routine...

4) Finally, change your build script to include the following switch when invoking pyz80:

    -D DEBUG   ie the full thing looks like this for me:

    pyz80.py -I test/samdos2 -D DEBUG --exportfile=symbol.txt test/auto.asm

The -D switch defines a new variable and this version just checks if it’s defined (and therefore given a default value of 1), is so include the code.

Now I can easily change the toggle to Off if I don't want to use it for a while.  When I make the final build, I can leave out the -D DEBUG switch from the make.bat script file, and everything automatically compiles without the tests included, so you don't have to worry the public will find your cheat.

And the toggles will all be listed in one place so I can easily see what I've got activated in one glance.  If I want, I can do this outside of the code entirely by setting the debug variable value.  (I haven’t thought about it properly, but that may be useful for building multiple versions and testing for errors at once.)

Can COMET do this?  I can't remember and don't think I'll ever need to find out.  Another win for pyz80.

You can use this to include all sorts of developer things you might need, like a cheat to move to certain rooms, or adding invincibility, anything useful when you're playtesting but won't need in the real thing.

I've been especially dumb these last few years because I've always known it's there and I never got my head round it.  Chris White found this set of toggles in the original Outrun arcade code.  I've read deeply useful books from cover-to-cover (I recommend Code Complete by Steve McConnell), exhorting me to routinely include robust unit tests, and not done them in my own code.  That's got to change.
