By Sector:
Though Corporate Training in India has been dominated by the services industry that comprises of IT, BFSI, BPO etc. training requirements from Retail/Wholesale and Education sector are growing at a faster pace. The covid-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for the digitization process in retail and education sector.
By Training to designation of employees:
Training programs for the non-managerial level of employee’s accounts for majority of the training. Technical trainings are popular at non-managerial level. Managerial trainings are also on rise. Courses like lean, compliance, statutory laws, process are given in managerial trainings.

GREEN UPS MARKET ANALYSIS (2018-2026)
Green UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) is an electrical device, which provides power supply to loads when power supply from the main station fails. It helps in conserving energy and reducing the carbon footprint. A single green UPS system can reduce carbon footprint by 3,152 pounds and conserve 2,352 kilowatt-hours of electricity, which is enough to power a compact fluorescent light bulb for 20 years.
Increasing demand for uninterrupted power supply
Restriction of hazardous substance (ROHS) directive adopted by the EU in February 2003 put forth restrictions on the use of certain hazardous chemicals/substances for the manufacturing of electrical or electronic products. The green UPS comply with the directive and is eco-friendly, as they do not involve the use of hazardous chemicals/substances during its manufacture. Most of the conventional power supply systems cause harmonic pollution. Harmonic pollution in power systems is caused due to increased heating of the equipment and conductors as well as misfiring (absence or fault in one of the four components which initiate ignition, namely – proper air-fuel mixture, good compression, proper timing, and correct spark) in variable speed drives, which results in the wastage of power. Moreover, green UPS reduces power wastage caused by harmonic pollution.
Increasing IT sector and number of data centers in the last decade across the globe is driving growth of the green UPS market. For instance, according to a report published by the Department of Commerce of Washington State in January 2018, in 2017, the number of data centers across the globe totaled 8.6 million. IT sector and data centers use green UPS to provide continuous power supply to protect operational data, IT equipment, and to keep cooling systems of equipment, which can be lost due to interrupted power supply. Furthermore, green UPS provides faster speed while switching up (switching between power supply sources from the grid to the UPS and vice-versa) and provides security, which is very useful in protecting computer, electronics and telecommunication equipment from downtime, damage, and data loss, which is caused by interrupted power supply.
Rising urbanization across the globe leading to increasing demand for continuous power supply and growing power deficit resulting in interrupted power supply is driving growth of the green UPS market. Rising standard of living and increasing disposable income also drives the market growth. For instance, according to the report by Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), disposable personal income (DPI) in the U.S. increased by US$ 39.8 billion (0.3 %) in April 2018, as compared to 2017. Green UPS reduces operational cost and requires low maintenance cost. Moreover, it requires low power consumption while charging, as compared to conventional UPS system.
Lack of awareness regarding the advantages of green UPS is hampering growth of the market
Lack of awareness regarding usage of green UPS is a major factor hindering growth of the green UPS market. Moreover, strict rules and regulations regarding manufacturing of green UPS and the raw materials that can be used are other factors hindering growth of the green UPS market.
Global Green UPS Market: Regional Analysis
North America and Europe have the largest market share with respect to the usage of green UPS. North America has been witnessing growth in the green UPS market over the years, owing to the presence of large number of data centers and impending plans to build new ones in the future, as more and more enterprises are migrating from housing their data centers in-house to outsourcing their data storage to service providers such as Google and Oracle who have their own data centers across the globe.
Asia Pacific is expected to show growth in the green UPS market. This is due to the fact that economies in Asia Pacific such as India and China, where consumers are concerned towards adopting eco-friendly energy saving products in addition to government initiatives (such as subsidies for purchasing and installing such services) are encouraging the use of such products. Furthermore, government supported initiatives such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ are also helping in growth of the green UPS market, owing to increasing manufacturing of electronics and electrical hardware and increasing use of electronics. For instance, according to a report by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY), in India, the demand for electronics is projected to increase from about US$ 45 billion in 2009 to US$ 400 billion by 2020. The Government of India is also taking initiatives to move all of its Government Services to the cloud and this is expected to increase the need of a robust IT network involving data centers. For instance, in an effort to stabilize the digital ecosystem of the country and keeping in mind, India’s emergence as a biggest consumer of data, the Government of India in association with the National informatics Center (NIC) announced in June 2018 that it was setting up the country’s fifth and the largest data center in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. Such initiatives are expected to boost growth of the green UPS market.
Global Green UPS Market: Competitive Landscape
Key players operating in the green UPS market include Cyber Power Systems Inc., Emerson Network Power Inc., Eaton Corporation PLC, Falcon Electric Co., General Electric Co., Numeric Power Systems, Rittal Corporation, Smart Power Systems, Socomec, Tech Data Corporation, and Tripp Lite.

AIIMS director Randeep Guleria on Thursday said that it was "important to reach out to patients who are missing out of treatment because of the stigma and panic", adding, "It is important to encourage more and more people to get tested, get treated."
"...It (stigma) is actually causing increase in morbidity and mortality. Because of the stigma that is happening many patients who have COVID-19 or flu like symptoms are not coming to health care facilities," he added.

He also said that at various centres, "we've started using convalescent plasma that is the blood of COVID-19 patients who have recovered. A large number of patients who have become alright have come forward and volunteered to donate their blood."
Centre says no exponential growth in COVID-19 cases so far
In its press briefing on Thursday, the Union health ministry asserted that the growth of coronavirus cases in the country has been more or less linear and not exponential, and added that testing has been ramped up consistently.
CK Mishra, the chairman of Empowered Group Two, said, "One crucial weapon we employed during the 30-day lockdown period is RT-PCR test to ascertain if one has contracted the disease or not."
As on 23 March, nearly 15,000 tests were done across the country and by 22 April more than 5 lakh tests were conducted, which is about "33 times in 30 days", he said, adding, "But we are conscious of the fact that this is not enough and we have to continuously ramp up testing in the country and we will do that."
Of the empowered groups formed to suggest measures to ramp up healthcare, put the economy back on track and reduce misery of people once the lockdown is lifted, Mishra is the chairman of Empowered Group Two tasked with coordinating availability of hospitals, isolation and quarantine facilities, disease surveillance, testing and critical care training.
"The growth of COVID-19 cases has been more or less linear, not exponential; this indicates that the strategies we adopted have succeeded in containing the infection to a particular level. Post imposition of lockdown, while the number of new positive cases has increased by 16 times, testing increased by 24 times," Mishra said in his presentation.
Mishra also said that in the last month, the number of dedicated hospitals for treating coronavirus patients has been increased 3.5 times and the number of isolation beds rose by 3.6 times.
"Despite a 24-fold increase in testing, the percentage of positive cases is not rising. The percentage of positive cases as a ratio of testing is more or less the same as that a month ago," he said.
Mishra also claimed that India has done better than a majority of developed countries with respect to the percentage of test cases yielding positive results.
Maharashtra, Gujarat worst-affected states
Coronavirus cases have spiked in Gujarat, and the rising infections in the state have become a new cause for major concern. Just five days ago, Gujarat was at number six, with Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh — apart from Maharashtra — having more confirmed cases.
As of Thursday night, 217 more cases were reported in Gujarat, taking the total number to 2,624 in the state, and Maharashtra reported a jump of 778 new cases, taking the total to 6,427.
A total of 34 deaths were reported since Wednesday evening of which 18 fatalities were reported from Maharashtra, eight from Gujarat, three from Andhra Pradesh, two from Rajasthan and one each from Delhi, Telengana and Madhya Pradesh.
Of the 686 deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 269 fatalities, followed by Gujarat at 103, Madhya Pradesh at 81, Delhi at 48, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh at 27 each and Telengana at 24.
The death toll reached 21 in Uttar Pradesh, 18 in Tamil Nadu while Karantaka has reported 17 cases. Punjab has registered 16 deaths while West Bengal has reported 15 fatalities. The disease has claimed five lives in Jammu and Kashmir, while Kerala, Jharkhand and Haryana have recorded three COVID-19 deaths each.
Bihar has reported two deaths, while Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Assam have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.
However, a PTI tally of the figures reported by various states as on Thursday showed 21,673 cases and 689 deaths in the country.
There has been a lag in the Union Health Ministry figures, compared to the number of deaths announced by different states, which officials attribute to procedural delays in assigning the cases to individual states.
According to the 5 pm update on the health ministry's official website, Delhi recorded 2,248 cases, Rajasthan was at 1,890, Madhya Pradesh at 1,695 and Tamil Nadu at 1,629.
The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 1,509 in Uttar Pradesh, 960 in Telangana and 895 in Andhra Pradesh. The number of cases has risen to 456 in West Bengal, 443 in Karnataka, 438 in Kerala, 407 in Jammu and Kashmir, 277 in Punjab and 262 in Haryana.
Bihar has reported 148 coronavirus cases, while Odisha has 83 cases. Forty-nine people have been infected with the virus in Jharkhand and 46 in Uttarakhand. Himachal Pradesh has 40 cases, Chhattisgarh has 36, while Assam has registered 35 infections so far.
Chandigarh has 27 COVID-19 cases, Ladakh 18, while 17 cases have been reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Meghalaya has reported 12 cases, and Goa and Puducherry have seven COVID-19 cases each. Manipur and Tripura have two cases each, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a case each.
"Our figures are being reconciled with the ICMR," the ministry said on its website. States wise distribution is subject to further verification and reconciliation, it said.
Uddhav Thackeray says govt's focus is to reduce mortality rate
Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday said that his government's focus was to reduce the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients and increase the period during which the number of positive cases double.
He made the remarks during his video-conference interaction with the members of two central teams that toured Mumbai and Pune cities, the two coronavirus hotspots in the state.
The teams took a review of the medical machinery, implementation of the lockdown measures and social distancing, safety of health workers and situation of labourers in shelter camps, supply of essential goods, among other things.
A statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that Thackeray told the teams that reducing the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients and increasing the period of doubling of positive cases were his government's focus.
At present, the period of doubling of patients in the state is seven days, which has to be increased to more than 10 days, Thackeray told the teams. He asked the state administration to take into consideration all the suggestions made by the central teams.
US sees record levels of unemployment
Unemployment in the US swelled to levels last seen during the Great Depression of the 1930s, with one in six American workers thrown out of a job because of the coronavirus.
More than 4.4 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, the US government said on Thursday.
In all, roughly 26 million people — more than the population of the six biggest US cities combined — have now filed for jobless aid in five weeks, an epic collapse that has raised the stakes in the debate over how and when to lift the state-ordered stay-at-home restrictions that have closed factories and other businesses from coast to coast.
Meanwhile, some countries — including Greece, Bangladesh and Malaysia — announced extensions of their lockdowns. Vietnam, New Zealand and Croatia were among those moving to end or ease such measures.
In Africa, COVID-19 cases rose 43 percent in the past week, up from 16,000 to 26,000 cases, according to John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The figures underscored a recent warning from the World Health Organization that the virus could kill more than 3,00,000 people in Africa and push 30 million into desperate poverty.
Huge lines have formed at food banks from El Paso, Texas, to the Paris suburbs, and food shortages are hitting Africa especially hard.
The European Union has pledged 20 billion euros to help vulnerable communities globally. EU leaders scheduled a virtual summit on Thursday to take stock of the damage the crisis has inflicted on the bloc’s own citizens and to work out an economic rescue plan.
The coronavirus has killed over 1,84,000 people worldwide, including about 47,000 in the United States, according to a tally compiled by John Hopkins University from official government figures. The true numbers are almost certainly far higher.

Different Kinds of Tiles Used in Homes And Businesses
Tiles are considered a cost-effective flooring choice that's also environmentally friendly. You'll use tiles that are made up of natural stone, or man-made materials. The manufacturing of tile doesn't use heavy chemicals and harmful substances that you simply notice in other flooring options. Tile also generally carries a longer lifetime than different flooring option like wood flooring. Here are some popular tile options that you will choose from for your next project.
Ceramic Tile: It is used in kitchen nowadays. It is a versatile and adaptable material which will be used in a number of settings. Ceramic tile low-maintenance that provides it more appeal. The kitchen and bathroom are nice locations to use ceramic tile, as well as all the living areas, hallways, foyers, and porticos.
Porcelain Tile: It is a type of ceramic that's very fashionable. The difference between ceramic and porcelain is that the temperature it's fired at once be made. The higher temperatures used to make porcelain tile makes it more resistant to moist conditions, less porous, and more stain-resistant. Porcelain may be used for indoor and outdoor installations.
Mosaic Tile: It is usually less than six square inches and made out of porcelain or clay material. Mosaics give you the power to be very creative once coming up with your project. You'll see Mosaics most often in smaller areas like bathrooms, kitchen backsplashes, and tiny counter house areas
Natural Stone Tile: It is a product created by nature; no 2 stone tiles can look exactly alike. Stone is a natural solid formation of one or several minerals that have formed over lots of years through pressure. Because the earth's crust began to expand and erode through time heat and pressure pushed the solid minerals to the surface, that formed colossal rock beds everywhere the world. This has created thousands of kinds of stone that are quarried over the centuries. These quarries are set all around the world. The majority of natural stones come from the United States, Canada, Spain, Turkey Italy, France, Greece, India, China, Taiwan, Mexico, and Brazil. There are three popular kinds of tile used nowadays.
Travertine Tile: It comes in natural beige stone shades, and is commonly used in the kitchen on the countertops and also the backsplashes. Travertine is also nice to use for bathroom countertops, shower area and on the floor.
Marble Tile: It is a natural stone that has been used for many years in residential homes and commercial buildings to form a luxurious look and feel. There are many variations within the color of every and each tile; therefore it creates a one-of-a-kind style that may not be naturally duplicated. Marble is a porous that has got to be sealed.
Granite Tile: It has been used on kitchen countertops for several years. It's also been employed in bathrooms on the shower walls and counters. Granite tiles give a natural antibacterial surface that's not damaged by water contact. This is why Granite is a popular choice for kitchen and bathroom tile installations.
Slate Tile: It is a natural material that comes in many various shades of colors like blues, purples, and grey to black shades. Slate can be used for exterior projects as well as inside the house due to the various different looks and colors you can decide from. Slate tiles became more popular these days than ever before due to their versatility.
Quarry Tile: It is a ceramic tile that is un-glazed. This kind of tile could be a cost-effective and durable product. Quarry tile is less likely to chip or scratch. You'll notice grades of this tile that may stand up to extreme weather conditions, further as the hot climates. This tile is a sound choice for your home or business projects because it can be used for both indoors and outdoors. Due to the fact this type of tile is less slippery than most other choices; you'll most often see it used in hallway floors, kitchen floors, and pool areas. Make sure to use as little water as possible until you have properly grouted, glazed, and sealed this tile. You run the risk of mold growth and water damage to un-glazed tile.

Resale Price Maintenance in the High Technology Market: A Competition Law Perspective
[Mudit Nigam is a 4th Year Student of National Law Institute University, Bhopal]
The increased demand for products such as smart phones, ultra-HD televisions, LED lights, high-end laptops and computers, has promoted technological innovation and market growth, leading to the prominence of the high technology market in India. The country is emerging as a global digital lab with more than 20,000 technology companies, with an increasing focus on innovation, of which nearly 50% are digitally focused.
The manufacturers of the high-tech products adopt various market strategies to promote their products and increase its sales. One example of such strategy is resale price maintenance (RPM) which is a type of price fixing arrangement whereby the manufacturer fixes the price at which the retailer can sell the product to the end customers. The manufacturer may fix the maximum or minimum price at which its product can be sold and may also fix the maximum and minimum limits of discount offered on its product to the end customers. RPM is a vertical restraint as it is imposed by a player operating at a higher level in the market chain on a player operating at a lower level in the market chain. For example, Samsung Electronics adds a clause in distributorship agreement that no distributor can offer a discount of more than 10% to the end customers of Samsung’s products. Even in India, the manufacturers of high tech products impose a cap on discounts offered to the end customers.
The technological innovation and high technology market is not only governed by the market forces but also by the prevailing laws. In India, RPM is classified as an anti-competitive agreement under section 3(4)(e) of the Competition Act, 2002. However, an RPM agreement would be void only if it creates an appreciable adverse effect on competition within India. This condition is generally based on the rule laid down by US Supreme Court in Leegin Creative Leather Products, Inc. v. PSKS, Inc. In Leeginit was held that RPM is not illegal per se and the rule of reason must be applied by court in assessing the impact of RPM on competition in the market. The rule of reason allows an inquiry as to the economic rationale and competitive consequences of a manufacturer’s RPM policy.[i] Under the rule of reason, the fact finder weighs all of the circumstances of a case in deciding whether a restrictive practice should be prohibited as imposing an unreasonable restraint on competition.[ii]
In India, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) in Fx Enterprise Solutions India Pvt. Ltd. & Anr.v. Hyundai Motor India Limited observed that an agreement that has as its direct or indirect object the establishment of a fixed or minimum resale price level may restrict competition. In this case, CCI held RPM through discount restrictions imposed by the manufacturer to be anti-competitive because of the potential harm to consumers.
Nevertheless, RPM has an important role in high technology market. Intra-brand competition is the competition between the distributors (wholesale or retail) of the products of a particular manufacturer operating at downstream level.[iii] For example, consider competition among sellers of Samsung smart phones. On the other hand, inter-brand competition refers to competition among various brands of a particular product. Imposition of RPM leads to restriction on intra-brand competition in the market as fixation of price by the manufacturers hampers the ability of distributors to decide the prices. When a minimum RPM is imposed by the manufacturer of a particular brand, distributors are prevented from decreasing the sale prices. In other words, the mechanism does not allow the dealers to compete effectively on price.[iv]
However, restrictions on intra-brand competition can actually enhance market-wide competition by fostering vertical efficiency and maintaining the desired quality of a product.[v] Instead of competing on price and attracting customers by offering heavy discounts, the sellers or distributors compete on services. In high technology market involving complex products, consumers likely require more guidance from vendors of such products than from vendors of other types of products. Thus, by imposing RPM, the manufacturer can prevent the distributors of its product from competing on price, which in turn will force the manufacturer to offer better services to customers such as product demonstrations, repair services, advertising, showrooms. It will be beneficial to consumers as well as the manufacturers of the product. This could be further explained with the help of following example.
Suppose X Co., a manufacturer of high-end laptops fixes minimum resale price of its laptops and mandates that no retailer should sell the product below Rs.1,00,000. There are two retailers selling the same product of X Co. Since, neither of them can sell the product below Rs. 1,00,000, they will try to attract customers by providing better services such as a detailed explanation of high-end laptop or demonstration and compete with other retailer. This could potentially ensure consumer satisfaction and would result in high sale of product of X Co.
RPM is also necessary to prevent online distributors or sellers of high-tech products from abusing their market position. In today’s world, most of the high tech products are available in the online marketplace at very low prices. Online sellers often utilise their capabilities to offer heavy discounts on high tech products. Due to such excessive discounts, customers often shift to the online market thereby reducing the sale of offline sellers. The shifting of the consumer base from the offline market to the online market may result in foreclosure of the offline market. Through discount restrictions, RPM can be helpful to prevent such foreclosure. When discount restrictions are imposed on online as well as offline sellers, there would be a parity in prices and online sellers will no longer be able to attract customers by offering heavy discounts.
The high-tech market is altogether different from other markets and RPM in such market can be beneficial to end consumers as well as the manufacturer. It is rightly so that RPM is not illegal per seand that circumstances in the high-tech market may call for RPM to be prevalent. However, it does not suggests that RPM in high tech market is always pro-competitive and essential. The competition regulators in India have not dealt with a case of RPM in high-tech market and it would be interesting to witness the evolving jurisprudence of competition law in this regard.

A few years ago, Kanojia took on some of the biggest media companies in the U.S. with his streaming TV startup Aereo. Well before the recent explosion of internet-based TV bundles, Aereo became a tech phenom by streaming broadcast channels over the internet for a small monthly fee.
It had the feel of the next big thing. The company had customers, funding, and no immediate competitors. It was all going to planup until the Supreme Court stopped him. It’s the kind of defeat that can cripple an entrepreneur.
Not Kanojia. Over tequila shots with colleagues on Aereo’s final day, he was already hatching his next move.
“There’s no obligation, but if you walk in we can’t promise it’s going to work,” he told some of his remaining staffers, many of whom took him up on the offer.
Almost three years after that ruling, I’m riding an elevator with Kanojia up to a loft in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He’s going to show me a piece of that technology Kanojia teased over tequila shots.
The elevator arrives, and we walk into a penthouse apartment, where a white triangle with a screen sits on a window sill.
“This is part of Starry,” he said.
Starry is Kanojia’s new venture, a way to provide cheap, wireless internet access to people’s homes. Most people only have one choice for high-speed internet, a choke point that causes any number of issues and is central to the ongoing net neutrality debate.
This device is an internet router, but it’s just the tip of a much larger, technology-sophisticated system that includes various pieces of equipment set up across a city to create super-fast, wireless access. For now, Starry Internet is only running as a beta test in the greater Boston area. The company is on track to launch in several additional cities by the end of this year.

If Starry works, it could mean big things for the internet, not just from a business perspective.
It’s a big if, the kind Kanojia deals in.
“What we’re doing and what other people will do it’s not only critical, it’s necessary,” Kanojia said.
‘All roads lead to India’
Kanojia, 47, is a disruptor at a time when “disruptor” is thrown around by Silicon Valley poseurs with a new food delivery app.
He immigrated from India in 1991 and has expertise in mechanical engineering, computer systems engineering, and the telecommunications industry. He gained notoriety for Aereo, which was well on its way to irrevocably changing the TV business. Prior to that, he had run Navic Networks, which developed data-collection technology for cable companies. He sold that startup to Microsoft in 2008 reportedly for $250 million.
“Engineering, its like magical… Its so abstract that you either get totally intimidated, or you think, ‘How does it work?'”
Like many of tech’s most impactful entrepreneurs, his story started outside the United States. He was born in Bhopal, India. Bhopal is known for being the site of one of the worst industrial accidents in human history. Thousands of people died in 1984 after a nearby pesticide plant leaked toxic gas.
He gravitated to engineering from a young age. He also saw what it meant to have gatekeepers.
When he was growing up in India, young people took one national exam that determined the level of university they could attend. That single exam set children like Kanojia on one path with little ability to veer from it.
“All roads lead to India. Growing up in India theres a hierarchy because there’s so much competition, there’s not a lot of opportunity,” he said. “If you were an engineer or a doctor, you had a path forward. Everybody else, you had to figure it out.”
That experience of fighting for a spot and then being unable to veer from it informed Kanojia’s views on technology and business. You can be successful, sure, but within the system. Entrepreneurship was, for the part, absent, meaning the status quo was never challenged.
Kanojia now relishes that opportunity. Both Aereo and now Starry have been squarely aimed at bringing change to markets in which big companies held outsized power.

“Unchecked corporate interests can do a lot of damage, and there are new age corporate interests that tend to be more ‘Do no evil,'” Kanojia said.
“To me, technology it allows you to transform things, and thats the coolest part about it all. It changes everything,” he added.
Aereo’s rise and fall
Starting in 2012, Aereo looked like a winner. Kanojia raised almost $100 million for the company, which grew quickly. He had the backing of media mogul Barry Diller.
FirstMark Capital was one of Aereo’s investors. Amish Jani, managing director of the firm, had met Kanojia in early 2001 back when he was running Navic. The company had raised some early-stage capital, not that anyone could tell. Jani recalled the first meeting inside Navic’s second offices, a tight-packed room, stacked with boxes and desks side by side.
“What you got the sense immediately was someone who is very intelligent about technology and products and how they can be leveraged to disrupt an industry,” Jani said.
“You saw someone who was very hard-working, and you saw someone who was very gritty about it. This was right around the bubble. Other companies had fancy stuff left and right. [Navic employees] were passionately focused on a mission,” he continued.
Aereo, the project he started after leaving Microsoft in 2010, worked by operating clusters of tiny antennas that streamed broadcast TV to users. It was a hack, but one that seemed to have found a legal loophole around the rules against rebroadcasting over-the-air TV.
Various courts agreed. The broadcasters sued Aereo and lost just about every time until the Supreme Court heard the case. The judges ruled 6-3 that Aereo had exploited a loophole to get around copyright law.
But Aereo wasn’t a failureto Kanojia and to investors. Jani put Aereo on the list of historical investments for his biography. Rather than an acquisition or a public listing below Aereo, it reads: U.S. Supreme Court.
“We built a lot of great momentum and Chet single-handedly accelerated the movement of TV anywhere,” Jani said. “Now every person expects to see a live-stream of their favorite game on their device, no matter where they are. [Aereo] was not a failure. It was masterful execution.”
“Was” being the operative word there. Aereo’s execution was too masterful. A Supreme Court ruling and a few tequila shots later, Starry became the new gig.
Enter Starry
Kanojia already had a backup planand this one involved a loophole as well, though with far fewer legal issues.
It is very expensive to build new internet infrastructure, particularly the “last mile,” which refers to the connections used by normal consumers. Most Americans have no more than one option here. Kanojia recognized this as a problem for Aereo, as it is for every other tech company that operates on the internet. For all the wide range of choices consumers have for services on the internet, it’s all coming down one pipe. And that meant a gatekeeperthe kind that Kanojia doesn’t particularly like.
So he, along with his business partner Joe Lipowski, who serves as Starry’s chief technology officer, started thinking about how to fix that.
“If Aereo succeeded, Aereo was going to need it. If Aereo failed, we were going to need new gigs,” Kanojia said.
Starry’s main product is its router. It looks like Google Home and Eve from Pixar’s Wall-E had a baby. Which is to say, it looks like something I wouldn’t mind having on my window sill. But why would I need a router this fancy?
Well, the simple answer was it provides fast, reliable, in-home WiFi.
In the apartment, Kanojia fired up “Stranger Things” on Netflix. It’s a controlled demo, but it is fast. His experience with Aereo taught him the risks that a company like Netflix faces (or at least faced when it wasn’t quite as powerful as it is now) in trying to stream video.
If only a few companies control the pipes, you’re going to have problems. This is the essence of the net neutrality debate.
“If you dont have net neutrality, how does Netflix continue to make the investment it needs to make?” Kanojia said. “When it doesnt consider the cost to the consumer, the power will be in two to three companies.”
The 10-year plan (as of this moment)
Unlike Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Kanojia isn’t following a 10-year plan.
“The one certainty in a 10-year plan is in three months, it’ll change,” Kanojia said with a smile when asked about long-term strategy.
“If there is a 10-year plan, it’s find and hire the best,” Lipowski said.
Kanojia said he doesn’t have a hard time recruiting for his new venture.

That’s one reason why Starry’s operations are based in Boston, where nearby Harvard and MIT students are apparently eager to solve challenging problems in the engineering industries, not just build the next Facebook.
“I think a lot of us now are utterly spoiled because each project is more complex and more difficult and more impactful,” Kanojia said.
Kanojia has a lot of work to do. As CEO, his time is split between calls with investors (Starry raised $30 million in a Series B last year, totaling $63 million in funding), hiring, operations, design, sales, and new tech. Like many entrepreneurs, he’s rarely off.
The majority of Starry’s 100 employees do not come from traditional backgrounds in the telecommunications industry. They have some people who worked in defense and other software engineers who have spent most of their past writing mobile apps.
“It’s so fun to sit in this mix because they dont speak each others language. It forces them to build a solid API across people,” Kanojia said, using the tech jargon of API, application program interface, as a metaphor for creating human relationships.

Starry is still in early phrases, but it does have a product in the marketplace. An undisclosed number of Starry Stations have been installed across the country. Starry Internet is live as a beta service in Boston. The station itself is pretty, and that’s part of the selling point.
The biggest question for Starry remains the core technology. It relies on something called “millimeter wave band active phased array” to provide internet access over the air. It’s a technology that others have tried before but failed to make into something ready for consumers.
Kanojia and Starry say they have succeeded where others failed. The company is promising 200 megabit per second speed for $50 per month.
Next up for Starry is perfecting the technology and then, obviously, expanding to markets.
“We’ll make mistakes,” Virginia Lam, Starry’s communications chief, said.
