This week’s episode of the new Syfy series The Magicians was called “Consequences of Advanced Spellcasting” - that’s quite a mouthful, and it speaks to the big-scale, wide-screen approach that this series takes. Everything is big, drastic, and well, attempting to be epic.
To further emphasize this, they used two epically dramatic songs. First, the moody “Let You In” by Wishes and Thieves plays as Q and Alice try to figure out how to get the cottage door open.  Then, Great Northern’s “Home” which has been a favorite of ours since we first heard it, plays when Alice uses her magic to burn a hole through the cottage door.
This transition of the songs during these connecting scenes is really something, with the music perfectly fitting the changing moods of the on-screen activities. We always love to hear our favorite songs in TV shows, but it’s really quite another thing when they’re used so masterfully.
Check out an episode preview above.

Yep. Love wins. The Magicians | S01E03: Consequenes of Advanced Spellcasting (2016) books in some of the more obscure corners of the stacks retained some autonomy, dating back to an infamous early experiment with flying books, and lately they’d begun to breed. Shocked undergraduates had stumbled on books in the very act. Which sounded interesting, but so far the resulting offspring had been either predictably derivative (in fiction) or stunningly boring (nonfiction); hybrid pairings between fiction and nonfiction were the most vital. The librarian thought the problem was just that the right books weren’t breeding with each other and proposed a forced mating program. The library committee had an epic secret meeting about the ethics of literary eugenics which ended in a furious deadlock. The Magician's Land (The Magicians, #3) by Lev Grossman

Because of the odd way Eliot’s jaw was built, the cigarette stuck out at an angle.

“So just to be clear,” Eliot was saying to Dint and Fen. “It’s called Ember’s Tomb, but Ember isn’t buried here. And he’s not dead.” He sounded exactly as relaxed and unworried as he ever had back at Brakebills. Just dotting the i’s, clearing up the details, the way he would have insouciantly picked apart one of Bigby’s problem sets, or decoded a closely written wine label. He was in control. The deeper they rolled into Fillory, the shakier Quentin felt, but Eliot was the opposite: he just got calmer and more sure of himself, exactly the way Quentin had thought that he, Quentin, would, and exactly the way that he wasn’t.

Sad and desperate people. Once one of 'em offered to blow me for a spell. It was barely worth it. The Magicians | S01E03: Consequenes of Advanced Spellcasting (2016)

Eliot had already faded back out into the hall. He didn’t seem to have much patience for Alice lately, as somebody who didn’t share his rigorous dedication to pleasure-seeking. Quentin supposed her unfussy diligence reminded him unpleasantly of the future he was ignoring. Quentin knew it had that effect on him. He hesitated on the threshold, torn between conflicting loyalties. She would probably be grateful for some quiet time to study. “I think she’s coming later,” Quentin said. He called in the direction of the bedroom: “Okay! Bye! I’ll see you there!” There was no answer. “Bye Mom!” Eliot yelled. The door closed.
