Five days of mourning for the death of Pope Francis. A questionable choice for a secular state Upon the news of the death of Pope Francis, the Italian State proclaimed five days of national mourning. A decision that raises doubts, especially when compared with the practice followed on the occasion of the death of other pontiffs and with the principle of secularism of the State enshrined in the Constitution. To make a historical comparison: Benedict XVI (2022): no national mourning, as Pope Emeritus John Paul II (2005): 3 official days of national mourning John Paul I (1978): 1 day Paul VI (1978): 1 day John XXIII (1963): no official day, but Republic Day was postponed Pius XII (1958): no official day In all cases, the Vatican has always observed the traditional nine days of mourning, the so-called novemdiales. The decision to extend national mourning to five days, in addition to representing a significant exception compared to the past, ends up overlapping with April 25, Liberation Day (Wikipedia: is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against Nazi Germany and the Italian Social Republic, puppet state of the Nazis and rump state of the fascists, culmination of the liberation of Italy from German occupation and of the Italian civil war, in the latter phase of World War II), which this year celebrates 80 years of the Resistance. This year, the government spoke of a "sober" celebration, but this choice risks obscuring a fundamental anniversary for the country's historical memory and democratic identity, especially on the Eightieth anniversary. In a secular state, national mourning for the death of a religious leader, however influential, should be carefully considered, taking into account both the institutional precedent and the historical context. Otherwise, the risk is that of conveying an ambiguous message about the relationship between religion and the State and overshadowing the founding values of the Republic.
