Alixandra Fazzina: Hargeisa, Somaliland Region of Somalia, 2018
Alixandra Fazzina’s moving and hard-hitting images are of refugees escaping Somalia, from the series Yemen Contraflow. Fazzina writes: ‘A parable for our times, untangling powerful meta-narratives that cloak the links between human smuggling and protracted conflict’

I haven't watched Steven Universe in full, but an excellent example of an sx/so is Rose/Pink Diamond. It's said that contraflow people run solely on their dominant iv, and that is very true for Rose. She's attracted heavily to stimulating experiences and it doesn't matter who she experiences them with. It's the epitome of selfish and being attracted to the high.
What I find the most fascinating is the people she's left behind. I feel that 6s (Pearl) and 2s (Spinel) are horrible matches for sx/so types. These people want to feel supported and loved and sx/sos like Rose simply do not have the attention span or devotion to match theirs. It's why I really like songs like "It's Over, Isn't It?" and "Drift Away." Really shows the damage sx/sos can leave in their wake.

Paraggi Tue 24 Jun Day 2
Looks as if I just made it through Doha yesterday before the Iranian strike on Qatar.
I took the tram to Nice Aeroport terminal 2, found the car place and spent most of an hour sitting in the car figuring it out. You need pilot training now. Drove confidently into the Nice morning traffic, found a servo and filled it with 95. I knew it was petrol because the label inside the filler cap lid said so. I didn’t realise it was a hybrid until much later, on the autostrada to Genoa, when I saw it charging occasionally, instead of just eco and power, and felt the “braking”. No badge to indicate hybrid. Initially in the satnav I disabled tolls, then found it would take until 5pm to get to Portofino through all the coastal towns. I decided to disable tolls until Ventimiglia, just over the Italian border, and allow it to take me through Monte Carlo and Menton on the coast road. We (me and the nice lady in the satnav. I named her Lucy, for no particular reason) went along tortuous roads through the hinterland, weaving under the expressway far above us on enormous bridges. No close views of sparkling ocean. I took matters into my own hands and turned right, down the escarpment, to the D6007 and then let her guide me again. I have to stay on good terms with Lucy, because I am utterly dependent upon her service. We cruised through Menton, the road signs changed to Italian and I was in Ventimigia. Drove east along the beach until vacant parking spots appeared and got the Citroen parked. I couldn’t lock it with the remote. It clunked when I pressed the lock button but didn’t lock. After a while I realised it was the presence of the second remote fob in my bag inside the car that was upsetting it. They make you take both fobs that come with the car so they don’t have to keep one and match them up later, perhaps in a different city. So I retrieved the 2nd fob, locked the car and, armed with 2 key fobs, went in search of lunch. BTW, the car is red, like the last one in 2018, a bit unusual, stands out in a row of parked cars, quite useful.
Tumblr media
Here it is, a few hours later, in the B&B “private parking” at the foot of 527 steps. Note the red plates. Other drivers know I’m foreign. It’s registered in my name.
The beachside cafes were a bit expensive, I didn’t want to sit down and spend $50 on lunch. No patisseries here in Italy. I found a bar in a side street that had a ham filled half foccacia for €3.50. That will do.
Back to the car. Easy to find, but it would not unlock. I placed the 2nd fob a few metres away and tried again, no go. What now? As I went to retrieve the fob I noticed the red car was a Peugeot.
Back in my Citroen, I decided to take the battery out of the 2nd fob when I can, and hide it in the car. I allowed tolls with Lucy, drove several km westward along the beach road toward France, then onto the E80 autostrada, heading east. About 190km to the Rapallo exit. It wasn’t a smooth cruise though. Contraflow sections with both directions using a lane in one tunnel while the other tunnel was blocked for roadworks, a one hour cruise at walking pace because of a blocked lane. The road goes through tunnels and on bridges most of the way. It’s an engineering masterpiece, worth whatever the toll turned out to be. Speed limits are just as inconsistent and illogical as at home, with 110k into ill-lit curved tunnels and 80k on straight, flat sections in the open.
Despite being a hybrid, the car didn’t seem to have much hybrid vigour. It was a bit sluggish. It’a 1.2 litre, 3 cylinder turbo making 100kW. The auto doesn’t help. My manual VW Golf has 70% more power. I discovered later the C4 has “flappy paddles”, manual gear selection. I’ll try that today (Wednesday morning, 3am, I was awake.). I couldn’t make the cruise control work, it said “conditions not met” every time I tried it. Like the last C4, the cruise has a single button for pause/resume, a great feature (when the cruise works) that all manufacturers should adopt. You need it on the autostrada to cope with all the speed changes. I won’t know if it’s adaptive until I make it work.
And the engine keeps stop/starting to save a thimbleful of fuel. It told me it’s using 8l/100km. My VW does 7 or less without being a hybrid. Don’t get me started on the lane keeping assist. It keeps shouting at me to stay in the lane and drive carefully when I never deviated. It’s rubbish, and creates misleading steering wheel feedback. I hope I can disable it. It keeps making electronic beeps and flashing meaningless symbols on the dash. That said, the satnav is terrific. But, unlike the 2018 C4, I would not buy this car. I’m not sure why I didn’t get the Renault Clio, a more compact, fun car. I’d forgotten that the C4 is quite big, like a Nissan Qashqai. I think it was because the only available manual car 4 weeks ago was the C4, then it wasn’t.
Exiting at Rapallo, my Wise card was rejected but my humble Australian debit card worked. Not too bad, €21 for 190km.
Then Wise sent me this:
Tumblr media
Hm, Wise didn’t tell me that before. I’ve used it a few times already. I’ll try that tomorrow.
The Trekking in Paradise B&B had sent me this through Booking.com:
“ATTENTION: B&B CAN ONLY BE REACHED ON FOOT VIA STEEP STAIRS OF 10/15 MINUTES
In case you don't like walking, or you can't, we would not reccommend our B&B.
ATTENTION: Via Costamezzana is NOT the right address: if you use Google Maps, set "Paraggi Parking" as the starting point. Then, use our directions, as follows.
Dear Customer,
The B&B Trekking in paradise is located in a private house in Paraggi, between Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, which can be reached ONLY ON FOOT via steps in the woods and a path. The house overlooks the bay of Paraggi and the Gulf with a wonderful panorama. It is a relaxing place especially suitable for people who love trekking in close contact with nature.
DIRECTIONS to the B&B Trekking in Paradise - Paraggi (GE)
From Santa Margherita Ligure (bus stop to train station or other bus stops) take bus number 782 towards Portofino; get off the bus in Paraggi; cross the Paraggi public car park (sign "P" corner Hotel Argentina). The same route for the car you can park in our small private car park.
The pedestrian walkway with stairs in the woods leading to the B&B is reached in this way:
1 - enter public parking (payable) of Paraggi (sign "P" corner of Hotel Argentina) and cross it to the bottom where, to the right of an orange house with the sign "La Mandragola", you have to enter the small carriageway a rough private about 50 meters long. Take the uphill section of this road and park your car on top, BEFORE the small bridge. You should also park the car with the front facing the sea.
2 - The pedestrian walkway with stairs into the woods leading to the B&B starts with four concrete steps at the end of the small stretch of road after the small bridge. You will find on a tree on your right two signs: "Teleferica" or "Costamezzana 3". Walk up the stairs following the sign "Costamezzana 3". The staircase leads up to the B&B with about 400 steps in the woods and, after a small wooden gate, continues along the path between the olive trees. Just before arriving at the B&B you will pass a small country house. 2 Minutes upon this house you will arrive to our B&B.”
Got that? I knew nothing of this when I booked the room, it was the only affordable accommodation within walking distance of Portofino. The key info in all that was Paraggi. Lucy knew where Paraggi was, I followed the directions and parked the car. 15 minutes later , exhausted, I clambered up the last flight of stairs to the house.
It was pretty good, run by a young guy by himself. The view from the terrace was great, as it was 500+ steps high..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The gate was after 429 steps. I counted them the second time.
After I had my room (one of 2 rooms, the other occupied by a young Ukrainian currently living in Canada) I decided to walk to Portofino for dinner, since the 2 restaurants in Paraggi were €100+ according to Google. At least there were many places in Portofino, perhaps some competition. I walked in along the road but mainly on a pedestrian path. Some snaps on the way there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As usual, mostly pizza. I’m trying to find some affordable dish without mozzarella. I had linguini carbonara, and dainty it was too, for only €18. The exchange rate is $1=€0.56, so divide € by 0.56 to get $, or multiply by 1.8 or (2-0.2). So the €18 was 36-3.6 or $32.40.
Then I walked back to Paraggi, up the steps, counting this time. I reckon there are 529, plus another hundred in the slope beyond the gate, so 600+
The phone was flat again. I plugged in the charger, connected the phone, beep, all good. Then it stopped charging. It was OK in Nice the previous night. The charger had died at its first exposure to Italian electricity. I have another one in the car, but I want a backup.
