anytime anyone unequivocally says they just think all religions are stupid or something else of that manner i think about what my religion professor said at the end of our introductory Islam course. she told us “if you’ve gotten nothing else out of this class, at least you’ve taken the time to learn more about how over 2 billion people in the world live”. And that’s why I like religious studies. Whether you personally like religion or not, it’s a part of people’s lives and you should strive to understand it. and not “understand to criticize” but simply understand, without bringing judgement to the table.
#like i’m not personally religious but. i still love learning about religion#anyway this post? mostly about conversations with my mom#who seems to think that because i am taking a couple of islamic studies classes that im going to convert#when like. that’s not the point of religious studies. at least not at my university#and not at most secular universities#it’s about understanding a fundamental part of human life & history

Since you're a college student, how do you ask for religious accommodations for Jewish holidays? Also when requesting it do you mention that you're Jewish or just that you're converting to Judaism, or something more vague? I'm also a college student converting and took online classes this semester, so I didn't have to worry about it. Next semester however, ohhh boy. I'm super nervous because I'll probably have to miss some heavy stem classes that I definitely wouldn't want to miss otherwise, but I think having to miss the high holidays especially would suck a lot worse. Plus it's pretty nerve wracking to have to tell multiple professors that I'm Jewish/converting with yknow... the heavy antisemitism on a lot of college campuses. I go to a small school and their website says nothing about religious accommodations that I could find so I'd really appreciate your perspective if you've gone through this process!!!
I feel you on that - most of my classes have been online, and if I'm honest... I kind of just didn't show up to my in-person classes for any holiday, which I was able to get away with because they were generally chill. I understand that this isn't necessary feasible for STEM - I'm in the psych department so I feel like I've been able to get away with a lot
I would say, though, that it's best practice to get your request in writing - make sure to email your professors even if you talked to them in person. This will ensure that there's concrete evidence that you did ask for an accommodation. G-d forbid that a professor acts maliciously, but sometimes, people do forget things in good faith.
You don't even have to give a background as to why you need an accommodation. Let's say you want to go to Rosh Hashanah and you want an extension for an assignment. You could leave your message as, "I would like to request an extension on [assignment] due to the holiday of Rosh Hashanah." I myself am a very private person, so I typically don't want to give people a whole spiel about who I am an why, and it's also my belief that you don't need to know the ins and outs of a person's life story to show grace to them and accomodate them to the best of your abilities.
I definitely understand being nervous, and I truly hope that you will have accommodating professors. Your academic life and judaism don't have to conflict, even if it means tweaking a few things.
If you have a shul, I would also talk to them! I've been very open about being a college student and being in conversion classes, and it's been very helpful for my peace of mind to know that my shul already knows my situation. I doubt anyone at shul would begrudge you if g-d forbid you had to miss something because of college, but I know for me, sometimes I'll just feel like they are, anyway (even if that's irrational - humans are irrational creatures).

Oh yeah I Also did so good on one of my homework assignments that my professor sent me This,

Informal proof so good that he's asking if he can use it as an example for other students. This is remarkable, given the fact that I detest informal proofs with my entire mind body and soul. But apparently I'm still pretty decent at writing them.
#speculation nation#the secret to my ability here was that i converted the english phrases into FOL so that i could understand them at all#bc when i have it in the formal structure then it Makes Sense. so i basically half-formalized it b4 writing it informally hfkhskf#but you know what whatever works lol#i have not been enjoying this class but im pretty proud of how well ive been keeping up with it.#ive gotten full marks on like all my homeworks. im gonna get at Least an A. and maybe i could even get an A+#itll depend on the final exam i suppose 🤔🤔 and i guess... that i should start posting to the discussion boards hfkshfk#i need to do like 2 more of them to get my participation points. blegh.

just saw a really stupid post on tumblr where someone showed the prices of vegetables in china and how, when converted to US dollars, only costs a couple of cents, and the post was like, "ugh why must us americans suffer such high prices when the rest of the world doesn't !!!" and it's like. you are aware that you come from a country with an extremely strong currency, yes ? and that, just bc a loaf of bread costs R20 (or 1.06 USD) here in south africa, that doesn't make it affordable to the average working class south african, just bc it seems cheap to you, yes ? u are aware that many ppl around the world make wayyyyy less than even the minimum wage american, yes ? that, even though you may be struggling financially in ur country, ur dollar still has significant power over the majority of the currencies around the world. yes ?
#cacophony of kaliya#“but kaliyaaaaa :•(((#us americans haven't been taught anything about other countries bc of propagandaaaaa :•((( you can't expect us to know how the world works!#have u considered that maybe ur just a little bit uh. not that smart#lol.

"They're running towards the house on fire." -Rubin talking about all conversion students after Oct 7th.
A recent notion came to me about a month back. "I feel like a sleeper agent."
Something woke up my Jewish soul. It feels like it has always been there, waiting for me. Nothing has felt more like coming home than working on my conversion.
I've heard from a Rabbi in New York that Judaism's introduction courses have a seven month wait list and have doubled in size.
Hebrew classes have grown and the demand for them is growing still.
Hebrew reading comprehension courses are being introduced to learning apps that have long ignored Hebrew in the past. Prayer book study courses are increasing and attendance to the bigger services this year like Yom Kippur were quite massive compared to previous years.
Not only are we seeing more new faces in Synagogues of people looking to convert or who are curious, but OLD faces are starting to come back.
This past Friday the Rabbi stopped while looking out at the crowd and went, "I see some faces I have not seen in over ten years!!"
I spoke with a man that only appears at the holiday events and he admitted that it had been a while since he had done anything, but he was starting to hear a calling to come back.
Antisemitism is on the rise. Violence towards Israeli and Jews in the Diaspora is growing and there has been a lot of betrayal from former safe places and groups.
Yet there is a sold out Jewish Music concert happening downtown next week. Synagogue tours are still happening and Judaica decor is certainly on the rise. The Jewish Bakery near me today was having a special Hanukkah festival and the line was incredible.
The Jews are Tired. A saying that has been going around any time we read idiotic posts filled with Antisemitism. I think that table has turned. The Jews are Angry.
The Mountain is calling and it feels like so many more are coming home.
#jumblr#just jewish things#jewish conversion#A freaking idiot of a sleeper agent but here I am all the same#Anyone else noticing a rise in Jewish Pride#We will dance again

Specifically it goes back to Nietzsches Genealogy of Morals and The Antichrist, where he identifies Christianity as fundamentally a Jewish religion who grew out of the priestly caste rule (rule by the weak) and the resentment felt by the Jews at their domination by other peoples, especially the exile in Babylon and slavery in Egypt. Thus Judaism (and through Judaism, Christianity) exalts the weak and debases the strong, it is a true slave morality (quite literally, the morality of slaves, rather than the morality of slave owners, as he would prefer), and it was in its changed form as Christianity that Judaism would dominate and defeat the Aryan, dharmic morality (and, his pagan followers would add, religion) of the European aristocracy that he so adored.
For every claim about Pagan survivals in European / North American folk traditions and holidays, it's important to remember that there are at least three layers of cruft on top:
Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Protestants trying to discredit Catholicism by claiming that it was secretly Pagan
Nineteenth-century Romanticists and Nationalists trying to construct an "authentic" volkisch identity by connecting everything to a remote pre-Christian (pre-Jewish) antiquity, and
Contemporary Neopagans and New Agers who want to maintain these traditions.
#that he was able to convert some anti-Semitic tropes to be positives in his value system doesn't change that#like he believed that Jews give a positive example of the Will to Power in their domination of Europe through finance#and that their money-sense needs to be bred into his post-national European aristocracy best represented by the Prussian Junker class#... that's hardly a positive view of the Jewish people I'm sorry#he's just inverted Wagner while maintaining the fundamental belief

Hopefully I scheduled this for the right time, I am horrible at converting time zones, and I have classes so I had to schedule the post ahead of time.
But yeah! This is just a little gif of when Wukong drops his glamor to apologize to Macaque in @kyri45 ‘s Shadowpeach Bio Parents AU! I have no idea if the colors are right, but I spent way too long on this, so… hopefully this helps with the Shadowpeach Bio Parents AU Tumblr takeover!
(Also sorry the tails a little janky at the end, I am still pretty inexperienced with animation.)

I’m about to combine my religion posting with my socialist posting for a second.
I’ve never tried to hide on this blog that I’m fairly religious. My faith is a big part of my life. I’m not here to convert anybody but I’m not interested in hiding that aspect of myself either.
Anyways I’ve been thinking about what I want from my life and wealth and how that relates to Christianity and the kind of economic system I live in.
Because in many ways pure capitalism and Christianity are kind of opposed if you really think about it. Any form of hoarding wealth and Christianity are opposed to each other if you really think about it. Yet it’s also been used as a reason to hoard wealth.
Jesus often spoke against hoarding wealth. He encouraged tax collectors to only collect what was due and not skim extra off the top. He said a poor person who gives a little money has given more than a rich person who gives a lot. He said it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than enter the kingdom of heaven. And I’ve heard interpretations that that “eye of the needle” thing was actually in reference to a kind of very small door in city walls or something but point is, it’s difficult.
Then you get the invention of something like prosperity gospel. The idea that if you’re doing well it’s because you’re blessed. You get politicians working for the rich or who themselves are rich making a show of being pious while also harming the poor.
So I’ve been rattling this around in my brain. The culturally dominant religion in the western world teaches against the hoarding of wealth. Yet that same culture also puts the wealthy up on a pedestal and protects them.
I watched this video once about this guy who personally decided to donate half of his earthly wealth to charity because of his Christian faith. He wasn’t trying to tell other people they should do this. Just talking about his own spiritual journey and why he decided to do that. He sold half of his possessions, sold his house and downsized, really went through the wringer figuring out what’s really actually important to him and this guy wasn’t even particularly wealthy. He was maybe middle class. This was a huge sacrifice he made.
I’ve been tossing around in my brain how the same belief system could could create both that guy and prosperity gospel.
We get stories all the time about how the real treasure was the friends we made along the way, right? About letting go, about being happy with less, about sharing, about the dangers of greed. Sometimes we even get those stories from the organizations and people looking to hoard more and more. Disney comes to mind. The real treasure is family. And also all this money we made off of toy sales.
I feel like society is trying to push us towards a very specific definition of “success” while also wrestling with the reality that even if you aren’t Christian you live in a society with Christian ideals and one of those big Christian ideals is supposed to be charity. Not hoarding wealth at the expense of others.
Like this idea of being happy with just enough is supposed to be a message for the rich, right? Yet it seems to have been twisted around the other way. If you’re sick it’s your fault, you didn’t try hard enough, you didn’t rise and grind hard enough. Even though Jesus helped those who were suffering whether their suffering was their own fault or not, and often he rejected the notion that a person’s suffering was their own fault.
I know the answer to this disconnect is that the rich can afford to twist the narrative in their favor. That religion is a tool that can be used for both great good and great harm.
It’s still frustrating though. That I feel like I’m socialist partially because of my faith but those same messages that inspire people who aren’t even that well off to give away half of their earthly possessions are used as an excuse by others to justify bleeding the poor dry.
It’s something I’ve been sitting with when it comes to what I want with my life. It’s a cliche I guess in some Christian circles that you shouldn’t want what society wants but I’m starting to think that’s true. At least to some extent. I think I don’t want success by society’s definition of it. God asks you to not hoard your wealth. God instructs you to make time for rest. Yet society has told you to climb that ladder of success and never rest, never sleep until you get there.
Yeah, I think I’m going to rest. I think I reject the idea that success needs to involve money. I think that hoarding wealth is bad. And you don’t need to be Christian to think those things obviously but my faith leads me at least to these conclusions. However it hasn’t lead everyone to them, clearly. It’s a contradiction of values we all have to live with for now, unfortunately. Hopefully one day we can all live out the things we preach but for now that day seems very far away.

Hi this is kind of a niche question but It's related to conversion so I hope it's not too off-topic to ask. I have an assignment for a class to write about a cultural tradition we're already familiar with or that we've actually participated in (likely with our family). I'm in the conversion process-ish, and I really want to write about a Jewish tradition but obviously since I'm converting it's not something my family practices or even that I'm remotely an expert in... but I've gone to so many shabbats (if that's even a word lol) that I feel pretty knowledgeable about it by now. If you were me would you write about another tradition instead? I'm also really disconnected from my family and we don't have many traditions which is another motivation to write about a Jewish tradition.... honestly also do not have the confidence to explain my extremely niche situation to my teacher lmao. Mostly just want to know if it'd be weird to write about a Jewish tradition in this instance since I didn't grow up Jewish nor am I an expert (but definitely familiar).
I wouldn't see anything wrong with talking about jewish practices - they have a precedent within your life right now, even if you're not done with conversion yet. Converting is essentially assimilating into a new culture, which is why many people liken it to emigrating to a new country - think of it like this: if you emigrate to a new country, there is a period of time where you're learning how to engage in the country's culture. You'll start doing things such as celebrating cultural holidays, or cuisine, or language. That's - quite literally - what you're doing now as you're converting.
If you know what you're talking about, talk about it! It's probably best if you talk about practices you're familiar with, but that's pretty self-explanatory. I personally think that when you're converting, it's important to have moments where you're more 'obviously jewish' in non-jewish spaces. That's partly why I wear kippah - one day, I will have to interact with the world as a jew, and that's for better and for worse, and most goyim know what a kippah means when they see someone wearing it. That's the same for all converts, and I think we ought to eventually learn how to navigate through that as soon as we're ready to. Talking about who you are (or who you will be) is a great way to learn how to do just that. If you feel ready to share that aspect of yourself with others, then it's the right time to do so.
#ask#jumblr#jew by choice#jewish conversion#personal thoughts tag#convert FAQs#long post#throughout my entire conversion this is more or less what my rabbi has been encouraging me to do and it makes sense why!#for people who are seriously in the process of conversion i think it's important to get this out of the way if that makes sense#the sooner you start learning how to navigate the world as a jew the better#i took a cultural comms class and the thing i didn't do was talk about my judaism because i felt very similarly to you#so instead i would write about being a man or being american. but like... this is also who i am too. it matters just as much to me or more!#i totally get why you feel this way and trust me - i feel it too. but you're not a Bad Person you know?

14 days with you: A comprehensive (i hope so) guide on what are those encrypted messages on day 4.
Soooo for those who don't know, i have a special interest for cryptoanalisis and even took classes when the military showed up at my school (it's a normal thing for the military to come recluting in my country lmao, males even have to go one year of mandatory military training) anyway. I noticed something interesting on day four and i don't know if anyone else has tried to decipher these. But i don't want to just limit to give the decoded message, so in this post i'll teach you how exactly this type of cipher works so you can respond to this guy in his same language >:3
TW: Spoilers for 14dwy (of course) and a looong rant. Those are the only warnings.
Just scroll to the end in case you're just looking for the translations alone.
The first two messages are pretty easy to decode since it's just ascii. You can easily translate it online or if you know the language of 0s and 1s you can just read it through.

The first one reads a bit more harder than the other two but it says "HI ANGEL" and "ERROR: I SEE YOU" or something like that.
The main thing it's the more complicated set of words we get later:
This specific cipher is called Monoalphabetic substitution.
I'll teach you how it works:
Monoalphabetic ciphers are a type of substitution cipher where each letter in the plaintext is mapped to a fixed letter in the ciphertext. This mapping remains consistent throughout the entire message. The primary goal of these ciphers is to convert plaintext into ciphertext and vice versa, ensuring data security.
Basically swaps a letter for another and that's it. Well...not quite. There is also different categories when you work with this specific cipher. You have to take into account if the spaces on the encrypted message must be kept (Aristocrat cipher) or ignored (Patristocrat cipher). In this case we'll be taking the spaces into account. You also must take into account the language, since russian monoalphabetic and english monoalphabetic (for example) are completely different (obviously).
You need to start guessing the letters with the only clue being the text itself.
It might sound complicated but it is really simple. I'll work with the messages in the game directly while i show you:
We already know that the language is english, so there is must likely two letters we already have, and it's the letter "I" and the letter "A". Since those are the only single character you could use separately from the others to indicate personal first-person pronoun and an adjective respectively. The first issue is that we have two letters that repeat themselves as single letters throughout the messages: Letter "P" and letter "M"
So we must figure out which letter corresponds to which substitute letter. So my recommendation is to look for short words through the messages that include a P or an M
We have PIJ and PS and JMJ, AMQ and AMS for example. The ideal would be to look for any words with P and M both included, but i didn't find any word. So if you replace Ps and Ms as
P→I
M→A
Basically the words are IIJ IS JAJ AAQ AAS
Notice how the "IS" seemed to be partially solved but could be "IS" or "AS" since we don't have confirmation of actually P→I. Of course, all of this assuming S→S
When you do the substitution as P=A and M=I we have something like this: AIJ AS JIJ AIQ AIS
the AIQ and AIS are two really interesting words since they could be pronouns. HIS and HIM respectively, but this is all a process of trial and error until you try every possible combination that will get you to eventually complete more words (bigger words) and fill in the gaps, obtaining more letters.
It kinda reminds me to the system of learning a language in this game called HOMICIPHER.
Anyway, I'll save you some troubles and try some more combinations.
If we assume that
S→S
P→I
M→A
We can now try to figure out bigger words. Words that contain S, P and M
Btw this is a super complicated thing to do as it sometimes requires more of a leap of faith than a proper analysis. So this is a process that goes back and forth.
For example, we see the word PQ a lot. The P being I and the Q could be an S so it forms the word "IS". But when we see that S=S the only other possible combination is Q→M
So now we have another letter deciphered and we can try and replace the letters in bigger words to see how many more letters we can complete. From this point on it gets a lot easier unless we make a mistake, in which case we need to go back and try other combinations.
Now that you have the method, you can try and figure it out by your own. But if you don't feel like it, I'll just leave the full substitutions below. I encourage you to skip it and try to figure out all the letters by yourself, it's pretty fun.

HCJWTBYKNDRGIUEAMQSLOPFVXZ is the key for solving this.

See?
Of course i will translate all the messages for you in case you just want to read them.
TRANSLATIONS:
HOW INTERESTING. A LOWLY, MEAGRE INTERLOPER ATTEMPTING TO REWRITE WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN ORDAINED SINCE THE BEGINNING...
YOU REMEMBER NOTHING OF YOUR PAST NOR HOW YOU CAME TO BE, YET HERE YOU ARE, ATTEMPTING TO DIG UP THE ROOTS OF FATE AS THOUGH IT WERE A WEED AND PLANTING YOUR OWN CORRUPT SEEDLING IN ITS PLACE
PERHAPS WE ARE THE SAME, THEN
I TOO FIND ENJOYMENT IN DISRUPTING THE VINES OF KISMET AND WATCHING HIM STRUGGLE
(Kismet = a force that controls the future, outside human control)
TWAS I WHO GAVE HIM HIS GIFT, AS I DID WITH OTHERS, AND YET HE WASTES SUCH SPOILS ON A LOWLY MORTAL TO BORROW MORE TIME. I SUPPOSE THE LIFE OF MANY MATTERS NOT TO THE LIFE OF ONE
NO MATTER. SUCH TRIVIAL ENTERTAINMENT IS NOT LOST ON ME
GO ON, CONTINUE DOWN THIS FOOLISH, OVERGROWN PATH AND SEE WHAT WILL HAPPEN. TIS NOT THY WILTING SOUL I FEED ON AND IT SHALL NOT BE THY LIFE I CLAIM ONCE THE ENDING HAS BEGUN
AFTER ALL, I AM THE END, JUST AS I AM THE BEGINNING AND THE IN-BETWEEN. THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE, COMBINED INTO ONE. I AM INEVITABLE.
...
Final thoughts:
This doesn't seem like something Ren would say, not even [REDACTED] since whatever this is seems to be ancient (judging by the language) and completely able to "give" abilities to people.
I personally believe there is certain philosophy under the idea of "being a programmer" or a "hacker" since it's one of the only instances in which a human can become something remotely closer to a god. When you think about it, within that knowledge lies the ability to name (variables), the ability to give a purpose and overall the ability to control what happened, happens and will happen. Considering that 14dwy is a game that heavily brings the topic of something (probably Ren/Redacted) messing with the code, i wouldn't be surprised if this entity that speaks in criptic manners was something among the lines of a laplace demon. Which would be hella funny, because the nickname Ren chose for us ("Angel").
I could explain more about the Laplace Demon concept if you, dear readers, are interested but that would be for another occasion. Another essay hehe.
For now, a huge thanks to @14dayswithyou for their amazing work in cryptography. I had a lot of fun deciphering this. I am excited about what this game will turn out to be.
Have a really great day/night!

If you need to get out of the US, READ THIS:
Again, if you need to get out of the states and have a location-independent source of income (because on the easiest-to-get visa you won't be able to work here--SSDI or regular social security works, but not SSI), we can help with the logistics of getting settled in the Philippines and make local introductions in Baguio. English is one of the two official languages of the Philippines, too, so although you're encouraged to learn Filipino, Tagalog, and/or Illocano, you can get by with English.
(And I hate that this needs to be said because of today's mercenary culture, but OF COURSE WE'RE NOT CHARGING ANYTHING. I'm just sorry we're not in a position to offer financial help to others.)
It's not perfect here (especially with all China's sabre-rattling), but at least for now, it's safer and freer than the US, especially if you're queer or an ethnic minority. We've been here going on seven years, and I've helped one person get out already, so I know what to do and how to do it. Also, although marriage laws have not caught up yet, queer folks are generally more accepted here than in the states.
As far as mechanics go--As a US citizen you get an automatic 29-day tourist visa on arrival, and can keep getting extensions for up to three years, at which point you board a cheap (often less than 100 dollars) round-trip flight to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore, and start your three years over again. (You cannot work on a tourist visa, though, hence the need for location-independent income.) There may be other options depending on your specific situation, but ANYONE from the US can do the tourist visa thing.
The local immigration office here in Baguio is incredibly helpful and sympathetic, and went above and beyond the call of duty for us during our daughter's citizenship fiasco. Everyone there is friendly and helpful, but we'll be happy to introduce you to our contact there just for extra comfort.
I'll post some relocation tips in a day or so, but in general, a single person, or even a couple, can get by on 600 USD a month here with some budgeting and giving up some Western luxuries. 1K USD puts you (as a single person) firmly in lower middle class. You can have fresh produce from the wet market delivered to your door for about a third of what it would cost at the local supermarket, and as for eating out, you can find budget meals for around 2 dollars--some with unlimited rice--if you shop around a bit. Public transit is ubiquitous, and costs literally pennies to use, and taxis start at about 75 cents. (This is all for Baguio, a popular tourist destination city--things are even less expensive if you live out in a small town or in the country--and I've converted to US currency for better clarity.)
Birth control and plan B are available over the counter (birth control pills start at about a dollar for a month's supply), and if you need to terminate a pregnancy, Thailand is close--with no one threatening you upon your return.
Now, on this next part I can't make promises, but we'll also be looking into what it would take to open an English school here to sponsor work visas for folks who want to get out, but who don't have a portable income. (Although as indicated above, English is widely spoken here, it's not the same dialect as anywhere else in the anglosphere, so some schools hire a single qualified American, Brit, or Aussie, as a bragging point, and they focus on people here on spouse visas that allow them to work, so they won't generally sponsor work visas--so I imagine a school with ONLY US-raised instructors would do well.) The English schools here mostly serve foreigners (especially Koreans) attracted to the Philippines' lower cost of living, and there are enough who want to study here that another school would only be adding to the local economy, and not putting any locals out of work.
As for your own education, tuition for a semester at University of the Philippines Baguio campus was about 900 dollars last time I checked.
More later.
