this girl is singing el emigrante (the migrant*), one of my favourite coplas ever, by famous cantaor juanito valderrama ❤️‍🩹
juanito composed this song in 1948 to honour the thousands of spaniards that had been forced to flee and live in exile during and after the civil war. here are the translated lyrics that the girl is singing, i do recommend checking the full original song, it should be easy to find:
i have to make a rosary
with your ivory teeth
so i can kiss them
when i am far from you
over her divine bead**
made out of nardo*** and jasmine
i will pray for the protection
of her who is in san gil****
and goodbye my beloved spain
i bring you inside in my soul
even if i am a migrant
never in my life
will i ever forget you
------------------
*i know it's not the same word but it's similar enough, also i don't know if 'emigrant' is a word in english
** i don't know if i understood this verse correctly, but if i did it's referring to the beads of the rosary
*** nardos are a species of flowers :)
****for what i've gathered doing some research, the church of san gil is a famous one in sevilla, and he's referring here to the virgin mary, either our lady of la macarena or our lady of el carmen, one of them.

Viva España: A Journey Through Style, Flavor, and the Rhythms of Spain After an incredible experience in Singapore with IAMTHEONEMANGANG on the Live in the Lab podcast for episode #85, I almost forgot I had another journey lined up—this time to the captivating Kingdom of Spain. It was my first visit back since the early days of the COVID pandemic, and I was eager to immerse myself once again in Spain’s rich culture, stunning landscapes, and mouthwatering cuisine. While the Magical Music Bus stayed in Singapore under good care, I traveled from Southeast Asia to the heart of Europe, ready to uncover more hidden musical treasures. via SoundCloud https://ift.tt/RKTW2IJ December 13, 2024 at 07:33PM

Coplas of Tears and Joy   This new album will take you through the history of the Copla, the quintessential Spanish popular music genre. To the rhythms of the Pasodoble, the Marcha, the Zambra and the Habanera, it deals with love, heartbreak and even pays homage to Federico Garcia Lorca. From the grand majesty of the symphony orchestra all the way to the intimacy of the guitar, flute and trumpet, you will feel its intensity and instrumental magic with its powerful vocals and passionate lyrics. It also includes a version reproducing the original sound of the 1940s to the 1960s.

Miguel de Molina.

I think one of my favourite scenes in Sinners is the one in the car, when Slim gets emotional about his life and turns his pain into a song. It is just a moment but it encapsulates the whole movie while also telling the audience the history of Blues, a music style that is called after a very direct feeling of, well, blues.
Everyone in the movie is riddled with sorrow and pain and weight. And they are all doing their best to keep going, they are all finding ways to distract it. Times are hard and life is hard and history is hard. Absolutely nobody is doing ok. It's the beginning of the Great Depression, in the plantations.
But there is song, and dance, and sex, and food, and drink. And it's a bit lighter, specially if you have someone to do it with. He starts singing alone and Sammie is asked to play along, you cannot let this man sing his sorrows alone. We won't speak about it more than what you will tell us, but we won't let you face it alone. It is a movie about quiet company, which is ironic given the amount of music there is.
Slim recalls his anecdote, erratically, and we (the audience) hear his memories of it, the music he played, the people yelling at him, the banging. But in the car, they are in silence until the moment he sings.
And I think this is a powerful message not only in the context of the movie, but in the current context we are living. To keep each other company in the pain, without judgement.
