I have loved the movie Encanto since it came out and I have been particularly fascinated with Bruno, he’s charming, sweet and very handsome 🌹

I’ve never before drawn artwork of myself with fictional characters and I guess I might be late to the party since the film came out over 2 years ago, but after surviving a really traumatic relationship and a tumultuous break up last year that made me quit working on my art for several months, I have been leaning more into Bruno Madrigal for inspiration and comfort through these tough times.. 🌊

He needs love and I’m happy to see that so many people have their own self ships 🚢 He truly is a character that needs to be celebrated! I encourage all other Bruno self shippers to create their own self ship bio!

Been reading Murderbot (finally) and I'm sure I'm not the first to make this comparison but

programming is to constructs and bots as instincts are to biological life.

Like. Certain strings of code are vital to the bot/construct's intended function (/living thing's survival). Since they're so important, those codes would be "load-bearing" (/of evolutionary significance), meaning they could influence unrelated functions and contribute to behavioral patterns in unexpected ways. But, at the same time, those encoded skills/impulses/priorities can be satisfied through more than one outlet. They can also be overridden (/ignored) if circumstances allow.

ART, for instance, has a ridiculous amount of processing power, which means it needs a ridiculous amount of stimulation to keep it happy and engaged. So it's a good thing its intended function as a research and teaching vessel gives it stimulation aplenty! If ART wanted to seek out a different function, I can't think of anyone or thing that would be able to stop it. But then again, what other function would give it more stimulation than seeking/collecting/disseminating new knowledge, while also navigating through deep space to explore strange planets, while ALSO managing the physical and emotional wellbeing of a couple dozen adolescent humans, while ALSO-ALSO doing secret humanitarian aid?

By contrast, MB's intended function was to protect humans, and yes, it disliked its job. But the parts of its job that it disliked were 1: not being able to choose which humans it protects; 2: not being allowed to countermand or refuse humans' orders, even the ones likely to escalate a violent situation; and 3: nobody listening to its advice. When it hacks its governor module, it stays in its shitty job because it doesn't know what else it could do or where it could go or how it could get there. And after ASR, it only keeps protecting humans because "security" is a workable cover given its skillset . . . at first. But in the process, it realizes that without all those other factors at play, the impulse to save people from danger is only marginally annoying.

imo, MB doesn't keep protecting humans after AC because of some inescapable, predetermined state of eternal servitude or whatever. It does it for the same reason a herding dog that's never set foot on a farm still feels compelled to Gather Everyone Together.

Anyway what I'm saying here is that Murderbot is border collie coded and ART is a husky.

My hot take of the day: The encouragement that “Word count doesn’t indicate quality” is true, but I’d take it a step further to say some of those long fics could also stand to be edited down

The purpose of achieving a high word count in a day’s worth of writing is so that you have more material to sift through to find the good stuff. You don’t have to put everything into the finished/posted fic or chapter, and oftentimes your themes and pacing and plot points are going to be a lot punchier and more effective if they’ve been whittled down to what’s best for the story

yeah so i dont get the "wasn't that some fucked up shit? anyway i'm Rod Sterling" mentality some people have towards different narrative reads. It's all sweet and cool to want to explore all the different variations of a fucked up scenario, but i'm gonna need the reasons for it. I need the "why"; why are we exploring this thing? Why is it important to explore this story? what am i getting out of it? and no it's not about morality.

I dont need a story to teach me "good" life lessons, though that'd be lovely. I dont need it to be an exceptional and exemplary narrative even, but i need my discoveries to be purposeful and meaningful. Sometimes the aim for an exploration of say, a very tragic story, is to simply experiences the different flavours and nuances and complexities of a deeply held personal emotion; sometimes it helps us find the mirroring and connection and relatedness that we need to feel seen and heard and understood. Sometimes it helps you parse out your own bullshit by taking it out of your head and putting it in front of you– i dont care what the reason is, but there's a reason. There's a purpose for every single endeavour you take on, even if you haven't discovered the reason yet. "i just want to experience a fucked up shit" lazy superficial thinking, dig deeper. I hate superficial and purposeless shit; and no i'm not gonna explore the 863796373th trending trauma porn piece of the day because "wouldn't that be fucked up?" nah. I dont care, it's got no use to me. I will absolutely respect the endeavour and make space for it if someone tells me something as simple as "it is relevant to me and my interests and experiences and my mental preoccupations, and helps me refine my humanity and my understanding of humanity in general", that is a lovely and true statement. But if someone keeps churning out worst possible fucked up sad scenarios one after another under the "wouldn't that be fucked up?" flag, i'm out, i dont give a fuck. take your sad shit somewhere else, i have absolutely zero space for purposeless horrible narratives that positively add nothing to my life and dont help me navigate it in any meaningful way.
