I am back home now, but here is a sketch of the St. Anton monastery ruins along the Camino Frances as you approach Castrojerriz. This is a few days walk out from Burgos, at the beginning of the Meseta.

These ruins have a lot of history behind them. In the XII century the order of the Hospital Brothers of St. Anthony was founded, and it opened several hospitals along the Camino de Santiago. They treated some contagious diseases, but especially the so-called “St. Anthony’s fire,” a horrible disease that used to come from eating bad grains. It would create the feeling of burning inside your body. Ouch!

Nowadays sometimes there is an albergue open that you can stay at ( its closed sometimes because of lack of volunteer staff). But they always seem to have tables and coffee for pilgrims.

I did this sketch April 23, 2024. I had just shipped my watercolor equipment ahead to Leon to try to cut down on my backpack weight.
