Originally posted: January 15th, 2023 What makes life worth living? Is it the accumulated experiences we gain? The dreams and aspirations we set out to accomplish? Or maybe… something simpler? Can those dreams get in the way of what truly matters?

One of the most critically lauded Pixar films, the opening is so powerful most people would agree it's already a narratively satisfying experience, if a heartbreaking one. A sentiment I agree with: an entire married life of good and bad times, unfulfilled dreams intertwined with lovely everyday experiences, and the void that comes when one half of that whole parts. All in just seven minutes, it could have been a masterpiece of a short film on it's own merits.

Which provides an interesting contention point: some claim the movie peaks at that point and is followed by an underwhelming wacky adventure, which is kind of missing the point of the story. While you can discuss whether or not the execution was on part with such a striking opening(and I can see the decidedly sillier comedy clashing a bit with the surprisingly down to Earth drama of set up), the contrast is needed for the core of the film to shine. And shine it did: this was nominated by the Academy for Best Film when it came out. Even with their contempt for animation they couldn't deny it's greatness.

You need to feel how deep the loss of Carl is, and how ingrained his sense of failure to Ellie's dream is for it to dawn the stronger he is missing on the other things life still has to offer or have already offered him. How that grand dream never coming for her didn't stop her life being worth living by his side, as it's those small experiences that made it valuable. How to move on, keep going and meeting new people was the most meaningful way to embrace the true spirit of said dreamed voyage: an adventure to share with others you care for.

In the words of Doctor Seuss:

"Don't cry because it's over, be happy because it happened"

Oh, fuck it. I wasn't planning on bleeding into another day but there's a LOT this movie does that makes it a masterful showcase of visual design and storytelling. From the different, subtle shifts in color grading that can completely change how the same space feels, to it's almost religious commitment to shape language and how that communicates character.

Sure, it's unsubtle but tells SO much about the contrast of personalities that it gets the point across without words. The fact Russel is round the same way Ellie's furniture is designed isn't a coincidence. Both in the general(his friendly nature) and in the specifics of the movie's conflict (his role being a new person for Carl to share his life with), the decision is pretty deliberate and pays off big time

Also explains why Charles Muntz is so triangular. Specifically triangles pointing downwards. Unstable, passionate. Dangerous. Tragic. The perfect foil for Carl, but arguably more so for Ellie. She could treasure the little things even if some of her wildest dreams couldn't be achieved, which made her life fulfilling. He couldn't move on from his own, so he gave everything away for a fool's errand.

And of course, shape language gets reinforced with body language. One frame. You can really tell the kind of characters they are with just that.

In case it's not obvious I love this movie. Some of it's comedy is a little too goofy for my taste, sure, but the overall package just hits the right way. Sure, it's romantic and it's central plot device doesn't lack a sense of the absurd, but those emotional peaks render any complaint I could have otherwise completely void.

The Seeker album by composer Rachel Fuller has been announced and will be released June 2020. Featuring Pete Townshend, Elton John, Emeli Sande, Sunidhi Chauhan and Nakhane on vocals.

It’s been exciting working on this project as co-producer and mixer and I’m looking forward to it being released next year!

#KeHuyQuan per il pluripremiato Everything Everywhere All At Once ha conquistato la leadership della categoria #Migliorattorenonprotagonista fin dai primissimi riconoscimenti dell’Awards Season, lasciando solo “briciole” al suo rivale #BrendanGleeson (Gli Spiriti dell’isola) che in compenso ha ottenuto la candidatura a tutti i premi chiave. Dietro di lui il talentuoso #BarryKeoghan che per lo stesso film ha mancato solo la nomination ai Satellite Awards, conquistando un interessante 3° posto ai premi assegnati dalla prestigiosa National Society of Film Critics. In questo scenario il vero escluso dalle nomination agli Oscar è stato Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse) fuori solo dalle candidature ai Critics Choice Awards e agli HCA Film Awards, oltre a Paul Dano (The Fabelmans) a cui è stato “preferito��� il veterano #JuddHirsch in quella che è sempre stata considerata la categoria del “premio alla carriera” (da Jack Palance a Gene Hackman, da Martin Landau a James Coburn, da Alan Arkin a Cristopher Plummer). Particolarmente interessante poi il percorso di #BrianTyreeHenry (Causeway), fuori da premi chiave come i SAG, BAFTA e Golden Globe, ma forte della sua candidatura ai Critics Choice Awards e soprattutto sostenuto dalla critica americana con ben due preziosi runner-up ai NSFC Awards e ai LAFCA Awards. Invece la “sorpresa” Brad Pitt per Babylon da molti sostenuta non è arrivata, anche perché la Paramount aveva impostato la sua campagna per la categoria dei protagonisti, anche se i Golden Globe lo avevano candidato tra i supporter e i BAFTA lo avevano inserito nella Longlist dei non protagonisti. The passing of Cristopher Plummer brought back memories. I never saw The Sound of Music until I was an adult. I was in detention when the family announced that they were going off to the movies and, naturally, bad boys stayed in their rooms. So off they went leaving me all alone with my toys, my books, my games, my records, my pets and the keys to the motor. It was purgatory, I tell you. They came back gloating and trying to make me feel sorry as I scoffed cake after cake (you can't gloat with your mouth full). As we all know, the accusations laid against me were clearly false. I personally suspect a republican plot to discredit me. They were always trying! About a week later, father decided that I had suffered and sent a chaperone to take me to a matinee. So, I brushed my hair and set off to the cinema. On the way there, I saw that Flash Gordon was playing and told the man that I wanted to see that. He asked me if I was sure because he'd heard that Julie Andrews was "really very good". I insisted and he saw me to my seat and left, saying that he'd come and collect me at the end. When the credits started, I noted that they had spelt Flash with an "e" and I feared that if they had been just as careless with the effects, then it was a clear sign from God that I had to repent. The effects turned out to be superb and Dale was super friendly, even more than Julie Andrews, I suspected, but - I lamented, first Flash, now Doctor Zarkov! They'll never get to Mongol if she doesn't keep her feet on the pedals.

Stephen Daldry

Second filmography review of this blog. After the Italian director, here it comes the first one who has an international fame - by international I mean fame outside Italy and France, countries where Nanni Moretti is highly respected - alias Stephen Daldry.

Stephen Daldry (1960) is an English director, who has a solid theater background - he even won a Tony Award for Billy Elliot - The Musical. He never writes his movies and he rarely direct. So far his filmography limits itself to 4 movies! However, they are quite famous and all of them have been nominated - and in some case even won - for important awards, in both acting and directing fields.

But here comes the big question: do I like Stephen Daldry? Not that much, actually. Let's see why.

1) Billy Elliot (2000): Daldry's debut is a world-wide success, from both critique and audience. I think you all know the story: Billy (Jamie Bell) is a slim young lad who wants to dance, instead of boxing, in the Thatcher times. His father is poor and has to work in the mines against the anti-Thatcher strikes of most workers, in order to allow his son to be a boxer. Billy doesn't want to and will have to fight his father. Generally regarded as one of the best English movie ever, Billy Elliot is simply a good movie, and nothing more. It isn't particularly well-written or directed but is interesting and that is enough. Moreover, it is an effective mix of comedy, musical and social drama.

2) The Hours (2002): another major success, especially in acting. Nicole Kidman won her only Oscar and The Hours is, I believe, the last good movie she starred in years. The movie has an original idea - well, the book that inspired the movie has - which is to reunite Virginia Woolf's story (Nicole Kidman) with the ones of two other women, one in the 1950's in America (Julianne Moore), and one in modern times (Meryl Streep). The story, however, is not originally developed and the interest that in the book was inspired by great writing, isn't substituted by great directing. You might add: but the acting is awesome. True, but it is quite clear that once you have Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Meryl Streep, John C.Reilly, Jeff Daniels and Ed Harris in one movie, you have to be very unlucky to see them act under their possibilities. Again, homosexuality is in the background, but legitimated by Woolf's bisexuality.

3) The Reader (2006): his best movie. Again, not his merit. The Reader (Der Vorleser) is first a book, original, somewhat disturbing, but in this case it has been well-adapted to the screen in a solid but simple story, that bases itself on Kate Winslet's amazing performance, who received an Academy Award for that. A nazi woman has a relationship with a younger boy. The relationship lasts a summer, they separate and find each other in a trial: he, member of the audience, she, as an accused of crimes against mankind in the concentration camps. That's all, but the lack of any presumptuousness is quite effective, and the movie is quite appalling. In this case, Winslet's performance is amazing and helps the movie to become a really good one.

4) Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: the worst. It also comes from a book, unknown to me but of great success. It simply wants to do too much, it is completely unsure of the genre, the meaning that it wants to have. The result it is a mess. Well-acted again, but the 9/11 attack theme is quite unlegit and inappropriately developed. With Thomas Horn, Tom Hanks, Viola Davis, Sandra Bullock and Max von Sydow, who earned his first nomination to the Academy Awards but lost to Cristopher Plummer.
