A Motherâs Sacrifice
Summary: Sad!Thrawn shower thoughts. I wanted to explore what a Chiss motherâs lullaby would be like considering their culture of rematching to new families. Are they conditioned from childhood that one's birth family may not always be there? Is it taboo to speak of one's past if rematched to a new family? Do Chiss keep in contact with their former/birth relatives if they are rematched? Does a birth family only refer to one by their new name, or a variation of one's core name since it's the one that follows the Chiss for the entirety of their lives? Iâd love to see more people exploring this.
Precision, precision, precision was Thrawnâs mantra as beads of sweat streamed down his face and onto the floor of his private sparring gym. Of all the private amenities provided to him as Grand Admiral, this had to be the one he was most thankful for. The vibroblade gripped in his right fist thrummed with energy as he wielded it with brutal efficiency, the blade flashing as it made contact with the Imperial sentry droidâs black plating. He swiftly lifted his left forearm to block a rapid punch from the droid, the vibrobladeâs hilt dragging along his chest and plunging forward into the droidâs alloy abdomen. Energy crackled along the plating and caused the droid to seize, granting Thrawn mere seconds to catch his breath. Fatigue was beginning to take over, and when he glanced at the crono on the wall, he realized he had been sparring for over 30 minutes. If he continued, his form would become sloppy.
Absolutely unacceptable.Â
âOverride...Code Ruhk,â Thawn said between ragged breaths. The droid immediately shifted into attention stance and powered down, Thrawnâs reflection becoming clearer in the sudden darkness now occupying its dimming red eyes. He swallowed as he took in his appearance, noting his own red eyes hooded with exhaustion, and his blue skin a shade paler than usual.Â
His reflection was the only Chiss heâd laid eyes upon in the years since heâd entered Imperial service. It had never bothered him before, but for the past few months, it had begun to weigh on his mind. A reunion with Admiral Arâalani was anticipated in the future due to unusual events occurring within the borders of the Empire, but it had yet to come to fruition. Had he even spoken a word of Cheunh in the past standard year? A hollow feeling began to expand in his chest. His exercising garments, now saturated with perspiration, felt too tight as the sensation spread throughout his entire body.
Melancholy. A feeling he was never fond of but currently permeating every fiber of his being. He shook his head and exited the sparring gym. Light followed his movement as motion sensors tracked his path from the gym to his shower. The thought of warm water and soap washing away the sticky sensation he felt all over brought a smile to his face. Surely that would make him feel better. He strode into his refresher, settling on the fact that of all his private amenities, his spacious shower ranked second. He began humming as he removed his garments and entered the stall, stark white lights illuminating the space. Soaps from distant planets housed in a variety of containers lined the wall, each a unique piece of art that made his cleansing space akin to a private gallery of all his intergalactic travel.
He was still humming a tune as he pressed the buttons to activate the shower, releasing a sigh of satisfaction when steaming water hit his skin from various jets clustered along the ceiling and walls. However, as the realization of what he was humming began to process through his mind, the smile that was plastered across his face slowly shrank. He pressed his lips together and closed his eyes, tipping his head back as water ran through his hair and cascaded down his back.Â
Rentor. His home planet. The melody? His motherâs. He could still hear her voice echoing within his mind as he stood under the jets, his humming increasing in volume as he remembered the words of the old Chiss lullaby.
Deep in the Chaos,
Far, far away.Â
Cold unforgiving,
Our Ascendancy brave.
Resilient hearts,
Traditions of old.Â
Fortune be with you,
Warrior soul.
Thrawn felt the weight of his sadness from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet. He wondered if it was possible that his own reflection made him recall the characteristics he inherited from a woman he never spoke to again after rematching to the Mitth. The woman who gave him life.
Your name may change,
And your life may lead,
Down paths I canât follow,
To places I wonât be.
He had never reached out to her. Although it was frowned upon, birth family contact had never been explicitly prohibited by the Mitth. As he lathered dzisnir herb soap on a cleansing cloth and began scrubbing his torso, he felt the reason for his choice rise from the depths of his mind. There was no question about the pain this topic held in his birth home.Â
Vurikaâs disappearance. Being an inquisitive child, a young Vurawn constantly asked about his older sister after she vanished. There were never clear answers from his parents, although he would catch a pained look sweep across his motherâs face if Vurika was so much as mentioned. After countless attempts, he at some point stopped asking. However, he always ruminated on it, hoping to solve the reason for her disappearance as easily as a tactical dilemma.
Oh, how naĂŻve he was.
As the years passed, Thrawn did his best to excel in his studies and remain obedient to his parentâs wishes, if only to not be the next child that disappeared. In hindsight, he realized his parents could have never revealed such sensitive information as to Vurikaâs whereabouts, even if they had wanted to.Â
Even if the silence hurt them as much as it hurt him. Even if he had vanished as well.
But you, my dear child,
Remember in your heart,
That if I live in your memory,
Weâll never be apart.
As he rinsed off the last of the soap, Thrawn felt his throat tighten with raw emotion. His mother had not lost just one child, but both her children to the needs of the Ascendency. More so, his passion for art stemmed from her influence. The fondest of his childhood memories were those seated next to her easel, watching her blend colors and bring to life the faces of children she would never see again. Had she had more children? Had she sung them that lullaby? Had she seen his successes and failures on her Questis news feeds, reading about a son who no longer acknowledged her existence? Was she still alive?Â
There was no way for him to answer these questions now. Unlike everything else in his life, he had never planned for this.Â
He had never planned to think of his birth mother, let alone miss her.
He found he couldnât bring himself to exit the stall as he shut off the water. The light around him seemed too bright, and his breathing was shallow and quick. He closed his eyes for a moment to settle his senses, and was stunned to see his face- her face, peering at him from the earlier reflection in his training droidâs eyes.Â
In that moment, a sudden tremor emanating from the core of his being overcame all his logical faculties like a massive explosion; emotions that had been suppressed for survival finally erupting on the surface. He roughly grasped the handlebar along the wall with one hand, and a pitiful whimper escaped his lips. Then another, followed by another. He could feel the tears roll down his face as shudders racked his entire body. He had given everything to the Ascendency, and so had she.Â
So had she.
Although I donât know,
What harms you will face,
My love for you transcends,
Both time and space.
So go far, my child,
And if you seek me,
Within your reflection,
There I will be.
And as Thrawn finally cried for the mother he once had, he allowed himself to wonder if all their sacrifices would be worth it in the end.

Regarding Lucca x Ayla, do you have any headcanons involving Ayla and Luccaâs glasses?
oh, wow, hmm, your ask reminds me how way back in 2012(?) i wrote bits of a lucca x ayla story that had aspirations of being 20 chapters long (this was in the great beforetimes, when i could update multi-chapter fics every month).
i can't remember much about the plot (if a copy exists it's on my old failed raid, may its disks rest in peace) except it involved lucca winding up in 65,000,000BC and befriending ayla by herself before crono and marle track her down. i'm certain most of the best bits wound up being recycled into my later story 'the quest for fire'', so the few dozen of us who ship this pairing aren't missing anything :)
anyway, there was to be a scene in a later chapter where lucca (tired no doubt of the running gag of getting her glasses broken) asks marle to heal her eyesight, since, hey, why not, you can heal grievous wounds through magic anyways, right? ayla was going to show up during this process and get jealous at the sight of marle with her hands on either side of lucca's face and gazing deeply into her eyes. that said, if i were writing this now, i'd scratch the jealousy angle completely since it doesn't fit ayla's character. she'd just be adorably confused, and probably want to sit uncomfortably close and watch.
i'm afraid that's all i've got! though i'll add that any fic where lucca and ayla meet would have to contain a scene where ayla tries on lucca's glasses. pretty sure that's mandatory.

Hell Week 101
What is it? Hell Week is a tabletop campaign, created and DMed by myself. It uses the Fate system instead of Dungeons and Dragons, which means thereâs a couple of differences in mechanics.
What is the plot? In a world of superheroes and villains, a hero team has recruited four new junior members. They must face off against supervillain threats while also unravelling the mystery of the greater forces working against them.
The player characters:
Captain Catfish: A leopard/piranha hybrid originally created for evil. The lab he was created in was stormed by the government, and Catfish was found and turned into a hero. Cute and fluffy, but he also has a very big gun.
Cain: A bounty hunter with wings and the ability to create weapons out of nothing. Cain has quite a reputation, unstoppable, but a sucker for more coin.
Spud Bud: A large, strong, sentient man made out of mashed potato. He was brought to life by a crazed cook who is currently trying to track him back down to cook him. More disturbing than aggressive, he is a self-proclaimed âSexy buff sweet potatoâ.
Night Knight: Aka âGoblinâ. A goblin mage typical of a far more fantasy-style world, sheâs dipped her fingers into quite a few pockets to satisfy her love for shiny things. Her magic is versatile but her favourite spell is âBlow enemyâs limbs offâ.
The ally NPCs:
Lady Luna: A cheerful werewolf, the most encouraging of the team. She spends most of the time in her wolf form, and her power increases in moonlight. If you need support, sheâll always be there for you, even if her positivity comes on a bit strong.
Doctor Dalmatian: The team healer, in more ways than one. DeeDee handles majority of the teamâs public relations, organising press conferences, filling paperwork, meetings with the mayor. He puts off sleeping for days to keep working and relies on caffeine to keep him going, which is a big cause for his irritable and impatient personality.
Gepetto: Between looking like a human-sized doll and his ability to control anything humanoid, Gepetto can come off as quite creepy. Luna and Dalmatian will vouch that he is still a hero who wants to protect people, even if he doesnât do so well when he has to interact with those same people.
Harley âTaserâ Hofelder: Harley is the teamâs engineer, upgrading them with gear and equipment. Although he rarely leaves his workshop, he still watches majority of the teamâs battles. Harley is deeply afraid that they will be hurt or worse out in the field, but has never voiced this fear to his teammates.

The villain NPCs:
What is Black Mambaâs Villain Alliance? The VA is the main supervillain group in New Salvation City, where the campaign takes place. In a similar vein to the Legion of Doom, the VA is an association of villains who have partnered together under one leader in order to serve their own goals.
Fester Jester: Bouncy, colourful, and undead, Fester Jester is a clown and the ringmaster of her own circus. She has a near-unlimited power to bend reality, but only while inside of a tent. Fester Jester craves being the centre of attention, and while her focus is always on putting on a good performance, sheâs very fond of abducting people and âconvincingâ them to be an audience member or one of the acts. (Current status: Captured by the PCs, limbs were torn off but later reattached)
Trencher: A mutant anglerfish man with a mouth full of teeth. The Allianceâs smuggler, Trencher takes pleasure in his job and in acting like the monster he appears to be. Get on his bad side and youâll wind up either cussed out or his next meal. (Current status: Arrested. Suffering severe lung and rib damage from close-range laser blast)
The Boogie Man: Combining both the looks of haunted houses and disco into his personal style, Boogie Man loves nothing more than crashing parties and making himself the headliner. With the help of his stage presence and his âRoadiesâ, heâll keep you around to watch his full show. Whether you want to or not. (Current status: Active)
Miss Vile: One of the Vs, a villain duo of lesser status that work for Crono Sector. Vile has the ability of transmutation and uses this to make and sell super-powered weaponry. Compared to her partner, sheâs level-headed. On her own, sheâs glamorous, sarcastic, and rude. She has no qualms about calling others out on their bullshit. (Current status: Assigned by Crono Sector to accompany Boogie Man)
Mr Venus: One of the Vs, Venus considers himself the boss and Vile his sidekick. His charming personality is designed to lure his targets into lowering their guard. His power means that even a kiss to the hand will make your well-kept his stolen knowledge. Venusâs sense of self-importance leads to frequent temper tantrums and sulking. He wants to be a member of the main Assembly, and he wants Black Mambaâs job. (Current status: Assigned by Crono Sector to accompany Boogie Man)
Crono Sector: Owner of the most successful security company in the city, Crono has possibly the most reach in New Salvation. He uses his company as a front for not only his own crimes, but as a backdoor for the rest of the Assembly. A fan of time bombs and speaking in metaphors, Crono does not like mistakes, and he believes he does not make them. (Current status: Watching the hero team closely)
Black Mamba: The crime lord at the head of the Villain Alliance. Almost every action of the Alliance is directed by his hand, and he always gets a share of the spoils. He may appear to be a gentleman, but there is a venomous streak willing to sacrifice others for his own ends. his hands are blackened to the elbow and can dissolve anything they touch. (Current status: His name has been mentioned, but there are currently no leads as to who or where he is)

Clarice Episode 12 Review: Father Time

Clarice Episode 12
In Clarice episode 12, âFather Time,â Agent Clarice Starling (Rebecca Breeds) finally loses her shit and clocks someone, and the series is better off for it. The young agent who rose to the top of a media circus on her first serial killer case has been scrutinized, chastised, hypnotized, and downsized since returning to the field. Sheâs had to run amok straight into danger just to get a point across which will solve cases. Tonight, Clarice lashes out at everyone, packs her boxes, and runs until her legs give out. It provides the most satisfying episode the series has given so far.
Starling has even had enough of her chosen, as opposed to assigned, therapist. Dr. Renee Li (Grace Lynn Kung), is the very definition of calming. Just a few words from her mouth usually silence the lambs in Clariceâs head. But let her blame being late on a traffic cop and the Sheriffâs little deputy snaps her cuffs. Clarice sees the scars on Dr. Liâs arms, gets her fill of explanations that unprocessed trauma comes out as anger, and goes with it. Sheâs been getting SOS calls from her subconscious, and her therapist canât decipher them.
It is very telling, however, how Clarice responds almost automatically to the mere validation âyouâre not angry,â from the therapist. The agent is an expert in many psychiatric disciplines, and is prescribing for herself. She visibly wills herself, through the episode, to come to the conclusion Dr. Li suggests at the outset. Clarice has a memory, and she doesnât need regressive hypnosis to bring it out of her. That would be too comforting. When it finally comes, Clarice faces the pain the therapist wants her to accept, and it stops her in her tracks.
The ViCAP unit gets official approval to raid Alastor Pharmaceuticals, and Agent Murray Clarke (Nick Sandow) is having a blast. He loves Raid Days. It would be a perfect afternoon for him if it wasnât for the agent who canât hold his bladder. Peeing in a bottle is unnecessarily rude, and probably another piece of unprocessed trauma for Starling. The entire episode could be chalked up as a very bad day for Clarice.
Attorney General Ruth Martin (Jayne Atkinson) is now serving a proper function: acting as a tool to work against a quickly ticking countdown. Thereâs a lot of money involved, and she could just as well have gone the other way and pocketed her retirement in a weekend. Her daughter, Catherine Martin (Marnee Carpenter), owns the line of fire. Their scene together is sweet, and serves to allow the audience to accept their premature bonding.
As the ViCAP team enacts an evidentiary warrant for ties to the River Murders, Deputy Assistant Attorney General Paul Krendler (Michael Cudlitz) makes Alastor CEO Nils Hagen (Peter McRobbie) do the perp walk in front of all the cameras. But the psychopathic pharmaceutical magnate does it big. He goes both Shakespearean and Jesuit, forgiving his arresting officers as he is cuffed in the round. Ready for his closeup while gasping for breath, his eyes are open now. There are bad apples in his company, he admits, and heâs going to worm his way out of it.
Agent Shaan Tripathi (Kal Penn) is consistently growing as more than a well-rounded investigator. We learn he really knows his art, the brush strokes and everything. He can tell the difference between a painting and a blank canvas. After a few words with the artist, he realizes there is something darker going on, and itâs not merely the pigments of the oils and acrylics. Marina AbramoviÄ only used pigâs blood in her massively misunderstood performance piece âSpirit Cooking,â but the mentored artist dabs from a much more human palate. Donât tell Qanon, but there are fetal tissues of five babies in the painting of Cronus the team took from Nils Hagenâs office.

Clarice: How Does The Show Compare to Hannibal?

The chief executive replaces the damaging artwork by putting Joe Hudland (Raoul Bhaneja) in a frame as a still life. The entire sequence is extremely well done. From threat to cleanup, the problems facing the megamerger at the center of the crime disappear leaving nothing but further suspense.
The depths of the debauchery on the corporate fronts appears to be much deeper as ViCAP airs Hudlandâs concerns about âuncovered sex stuff,â which Starling pegs as power. Her first reaction is to help what she sees as a powerless victim, Hagenâs heir, Tyson (Douglas Smith). Cronos is the god who ate all his sons but Zeus, and Clarice sees Tyson as an appetizer. The team later finds out the son is helping prepare the menu.
âThis is what happens when bitches have badges,â an FBI agent says as he passes Starling after the ViCAP team are awarded jurisdiction of a compromised crime scene. The affront sets off Agents Esquivel (Lucca De Oliveira), who gets called âTaco Bellâ for sticking up for his sister in arms. The situation could have given Esquivel the last drop in the law enforcement pissing match. But Clarice gets to crack the guy in the nose. Itâs a good clean shot, too. We donât have to see Murray to know he approves, and even Krendler looks like heâs biting his inner lip so he doesnât smile out loud.
Clarice disarms and turns in her badge, but it probably wonât be for long. She doesnât do it because of her anger. She doesnât do it because Agent Ardelia Mapp (Devyn Tyler) and Agent Garrett (K.C. Collins) are right in naming her in their claims against the department. Yes, she got preferential treatment, and she sees how unfair it is. But Clarice turns it in because her father was more than a dirty cop. He was a bad daddy. The only thing stopping Clarice from walking back in that office to reclaim her name as a good cop is the showâs cancellation. And so, âFather Timeâ ends on a triple cliffhanger. The uncovered memory has to have an outcome, the son of Dr. Frankenstein is walking up the stairs, and Clarice turned in her gun.

The Pantorian Captain then asked âHas it been destroyed?â
âYes sir, but not before it sent out a messageâ Firebird said
âDo we have an estimate of when more ships will enter the system?â Captain Namin asked.
âNo sir we do not.â Firebird said
Namin thought for a bit widing his stance around the holo table âIf we launch here, does the Star Fortress have enough fuel to reach the DâQar system?â
âWell sir, we estimate that the bombers have enough fuel to reach DâQar, but not enough for the return trip.â Captain Gideon Park said with his Hologram flicking.
âWhat if we launch from N-13?â Namin asked
âThey will have enough to make one maybe two hyperspace jumps, but again not enough to return home.â Park returned
âSir, we can do it! get us as close as you can and we will make it home againâ The Star Fortress Squad Leader said, his hologram shimmering next to Park.
Namin hung his head a thought for a long moment. âOk, we will get you as close as we can to maximise your chance of returning home, Captain Park, prepare to jump the Torrent''
âYes sir!â Park said saluting and his hologram disappeared
âGet to your ship S.Lâ Naming ordered to the other hologram
âI am already on my way!â The Squad Leader said with a smile as his hologram faded
âCommander Damon! Prepare to jump my ship to N-13!â Namin said to the comm unit tied to the bridge.
âYes, sirâ Commander Damonâs feminen and professional voice said
On the Bridge Commander Xavo Damon looked around to confirm that each and every one of her crew members were paying attention to their station and not trying to get her attention to alert her to another crisis.
âHelm?â She asked
âCheckâ the helmsmen said
âNavigation?â Damon said next
âCheckâ the Nav officer said
âCommsâ
âCheckâ L.T Slack Varris said
âEngines?â
âCheck!â The engineer on duty said
âShields?â She said next
âStanding byâ the Officer maning that consol said
âWeapons?â She asked next
âStanding byâ the chief weapons officer said
âSensors?â
âStanding byâ L.t Udell said
Commander Damon then grabbed her comm unit and said into it.
âCaptain the board is green, we are standing byâ
âThank you Commander, we are waiting for the Torrent to clear the board, Iâll tell you whenâ Captain Namin said, causing some of the bridge crew to chuckle over the fact that they cleared the board faster than the Torrentâs bridge crew. It last only a few seconds as the Captain came back and said
âJump in 4..3..2..1.. NOWâ
The helmsman pushed keyed his buttons and the beautiful star scape stretched into the star line.
âE.T.A 18 minutesâ The navigation Officer said
âAlright! The book said it takes five minutes to come out of hyperspace to restore shipwide full operation. I want it done in two minute. When we jump out there is a fifty fifty chance we might be in a combat situation so I need all ship functions restored in two minutes. Sensors make a short range scan of the area and report as soon as it's back. Shields I need you up as soon as we get in. Weapons; if we are fired upon, fire back regardless of who is shooting.â
âUnderstood!â The Weapon officers shouted back
âOk, we have 15 min left, so top off with caff we might need itâ She said. Xavo walked up to the caff machine installed on the bridge and thought to herself how this was probably the best pre-war feature the New Republic implemented fleet-wide, probably some senator or senator's son went on a deep space voyage and complained of the lack of caff on the bridge. She was not sure of the real reason it was there but that the scuttlebutt that was passed around, and she didnât mind so long as her caff cup was topped off and she could focus on her work. With her hydro cylinder filled she walked back to the command chair at front of the bridge and gazed up at the models hyperspace sky, she pulled her feet up and pulled out her data pad tapping a few key she pulled up the novel that the Captain recommended to her a four weeks ago, despite her starting it four weeks ago she was only a dozen pages in. Xavo checked her crono and with 13 minutes left she began to read and sip her cafe.
As the minutes slipped by, Xavo lost track of time but continued to read in peaceful silence. The Navigation Officer walked up to the command chair and calmly said âCommander we are five minutes outâ.
Startled a bit, she reluctantly disengaged from her novel and said âThank you Lieutenantâ. Dismissing him.
She looked down at her data pad containing her holo novel and let out a long sigh. âMaybe laterâ she said to herself fully knowing that she wonât pick it up for another two or three weeks. Xavo then picked up the comm unit and tapped in the Captain's extension when she heard the click that signified the channel was open she said
âCaptain was five minutes out, are there any surprises we should be aware of?â
âNot yet Commander, the Y-Wing have yet to report in, but in this case, no news is good newsâ Captain Namin said
âYes, sir, Iâll alert you if we do have any more surprises,â Xavo said.
âPlease do, Commander,â Captain Namin said.
âBridge.out!â Xavo said back acknowledging the order.
âOne Minute!â The Nav officer said
âOk crew! We all know what we have to do, Rightâ Xavo shouted. No one shouted back there was no excitement or gusto, clearly the bridge crew was still processing the destruction of the Hosnian System. She took a good long look around the bridge taking in every officer and every console.
âWe need a boost of morale soon or we're going to lose discipline very quickly.â Xavo said to herself.
â10..9..8..7..6..5..4...3..2..1.. Here we go!â The navigation officer counted down.
Xavo gritted her teeth and grabbed the arms of her chair more tightly as the massive deceleration pushed against the Star Cruiser. As the star faded from blue streaks to lines then finally to points she started her stopwatch. She let the low hum turn increase in volume, she waited a few seconds for each of her crew to process the new information from their consoles. She then interrupted
âSensors?â She asked next
âGetting the telemetry back now sir!â L.t Udell said âpatching it into your consoleâ
âSheilds!?â She shouted, inquiring when they would be up.
Two seconds later the officer at the consol shouted back âlight shields are up, Full shields in 45 seconds!â
âWeaponsâ She said following her mental list.
âAll turbo lasers and point defences cannons are at maximum chargeâ the Chief gunnery officer said âTracking missile telemetry is setting upâ
âMaâam the sensor scan is back, Iâm only seeing our twelve Y-Wings.â L.T Udell said. Xavo consulted her console which showed her the four groups of three Y-Wings
âDonât forget, they still have cloaked ships, so stay on your toes, Comms recall our fighters! Let's not stay here longer than we have to.â Xavo said.
âYes, sirâ L.T Slack Varris then spoke into his comm to carry out his orders.
âShields at maximum, sir!â The officer consulting Shields said. Xavo stopped the stopwatch and looked at the time. One minute and thirty four seconds, she shook her head and started to plan a few more drills to cut the time down.
âSir, the Torrent is launching the Star Fortress,â Udell said.
All eyes peered to the port side of the ship where the Star Fortress were attached to the Torrent. Standing at 22 meters they were too big to be housed in the hanger bay so what the Raysho and Torrent engineers came up with, where to attach them via docking clamps, air locks and hull access points. This made the Torrentâs usual sleek mon calamari designs look more bulking and obtuse. As each docking clamp retracted, air locks depressurised and access points closed off. The Star Fortress drifted from off the hull of the Torrent. Just as Xavo thought that they forgot to put the crews in the ships, each Bomber activated their engines and flew forward and formed up 500 meters from the Torrents Bow. Over the Intercom a voice resonated.
âThank you for the ride Torrent and Ranger, one day we will see you again ,and on that day I look forward to serving with you, cobalt leader out!â and the comm snapped off. Xavo could not shake the feeling that she just witnessed the last words of condemned men. Her attention was diverted to her Comm unit as the Captain said
âCommander, have we retrieved our fighters?â
Xavo look over at the comm officer who gave her the thumbs up
âYes, sir, yes we have!â She said
âThen let's get out of here as soon as possibleâ Captain Namin said
âUnderstood sirâ She replied
âThank you, I'm heading toward the bridge.â Captain Namin added
âWe will be waitingâ She said sarcastically before cutting the comm and saying
âHelms men heading 1.8.0 mark 9.0â
âRoger heading 1.8.0 mark 9.0â The Helm officer confirmed
âNav, lay in a course to the Hosinian----â she cut herself off then corrected âRaysho stationâ
âYes sirâ The Navigation Officer said deflated at the reminder of the destruction of his home.
By the time the Ranger and Torrent made a 180 degree turn the Rangerâs Pantorian Captain reached the bridge.
âCaptain on Deckâ The master at arms said
Commander Xavo Damon stood out of her chair and saluted, when Nadmin returned the salute she said âCourse laid in for Raysho Station sir, and all stations report readyâ she paused then said âThe ship is at your commandâ
âThank you Xavoâ Captain Nadmin said âHelm! Engage hyperdrive, let's see what is waiting for us when we get home!â

Buzzes & Bummers: 2018 Was a Wild Ride in the World of Cannabis

It took a whole lot of rolling (joints) and scrolling (old news feeds) to complete a thorough review of the most important, inspiring and infuriating stories about cannabis from the past yearâand no doubt I still missed a few along the way. In my defense, 2018 has been a wild ride in the world of weed, a 12-month timespan which truly could be called âthe best of times and the worst of times,â or perhaps just the highest and lowest of times.
My personal year in cannabis began on New Yearâs Day, when I waited in line along with countless other Californians to buy some cannabis on the first day of legal adult-use sales. The fact that I was already stoned before I made my purchase would seem to indicate that it wasnât exactly difficult to find cannabis in the Golden State prior to this momentous occasion, but thatâs kind of besides the point.
And cannabis just kept getting legal-er and legal-er all year, including in Vermont, Michigan, Missouri, Utah, and the entire nation of Canada (see more below). Election Night also ushered in new, pro-legalization governors in so-far not legalized Illinois, Connecticut, Maine, Minnesota, and New Mexico, and also saw the defeat of staunch cannabis opponent Pete Sessions, whoâs been blocking cannabis legislation for years.
And then you scroll a little further down and discover that the new Farm Bill is going to legalize hemp farming in the United States for the first time in eighty years (huzzah!). Or that Big Tobacco just invested $2.4 billion dollars in the weed business (fuck!). Or that Thailand is blazing a trail in Asiaâwhere cannabis laws are often draconian and harshly enforcedâby legalizing medical use (yes!). Or assholes like recently retired Speaker of the House John Boehner think that after decades of pushing prohibition they deserved to get rich off cannabis (oh, hell no!).
Itâs honestly hard to know what to think these days. Perhaps my new yearâs resolution for 2019 will be more rolling, less scrolling! But until then, here are the buzzes and bummers 2018 had to offer.
Buzz: Vermont Legalizes Adult-Use Cannabis
Less than two weeks into 2018, Vermont lawmakers gave final approval to a bill legalizing adult-use cannabis, and the governor subsequently signed it into law, making it the first state to end prohibition through the legislature rather than a direct vote of citizens.
Bummer: Big Tobacco Makes Moves in Cannabis
Itâs no longer a question of if Big Tobacco and the booze barons will enter the cannabis market, but rather how aggressively theyâll move in and how much market share theyâll manage to gobble up.
Neither corporate giant lifted a finger to help legalize cannabis or bring justice to the millions of people whoâve been incarcerated or had their lives disrupted as a result of prohibition.
In August, Constellation Brands (brewers of Corona beer) spent $4 billion to massively up their stake in Canopy Growth, which in 2014 became the first publicly traded cannabis company in North America, and now lists on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange.
And then in December, Altria (formerly Phillip Morris) made a $1.8 billion investment in Cronos, a Canadian cannabis company, which includes an option to take a controlling stake in the future. As first reported by Leafly, Altria has âover the past five years quietly patented dozens of devices that could be used to consume marijuana, a review of public documents at the US Patent and Trademark Office shows.â
Important to note: Neither corporate giant lifted a finger to help legalize cannabis or bring justice to the millions of people around the world whoâve been incarcerated or had their lives disrupted as a result of prohibition. And Altria in particular comes to the table with a long track record of corporate malfeasance, which is why they changed their name in the first place.
Buzz: Bong Wick Fighting Crime
On September 6, four men burst into the Recreational Cannabis Farmers Market in Shannonville, Canada, spraying a can of bear mace and screaming âget down.â The plan was allegedly to rob the place blind, but as they say in the action movies, these punks picked the wrong dispensary.
Despite being outnumbered and taken by surprise, John Wickâthe storeâs clerkâreached down below the register, pulled out a borosilicate glass bong, and prepared to defend his turf. As captured in the storeâs surveillance video, the four cowardly criminals were clearly no match for a good guy with a bong.
Bummer: The Cost of Legal CBD

GW Pharmaceuticals will soon call them customers, because thatâs how much patients are estimated to shell out for Epidiolex, a cannabis-derived treatment for seizure disorders that was approved in June by the FDA, rescheduled by the DEA in September (though only Epidiolex was rescheduled, not CBD itself) and is currently moving rapidlythrough phase III clinical trials.
Thereâs nothing to justify the sky-high price (about $90 per day) beyond the cost of research and development to win FDA approval.
Marinol (synthetic THC) has been available by prescription since 1986, and other synthetic cannabinoid drugs are in the works, but Epidiolex is the first plant-derived pharmaceutical to reach the US market. It was fast tracked through the approval process in response to parents of severely epileptic children pushing for a way to legally use CBD, after seeing it work wonders for children profiled in a 2013 CNN documentary called Weed, hosted by Dr. Sanjay Gupta.
Bringing pharmaceutical CBD to market will make it available to patients in every state (with a doctorâs prescription), allow it to be covered by health insurance, and guarantee a product thatâs produced to high standards.
But thereâs nothing to justify the sky-high price (about $90 per day) beyond the cost of research and development to win FDA approval and Big Pharmaâs insatiable thirst for profits. No wonder GW has been working behind the scenes to lobby for a de-facto monopoly on legal CBD.
Because hereâs the recipe, which includes nothing expensive:

Bummer: Patients Are Still Struggling for Cannabis Access
John Flickner, a 78-year-old resident of Niagara Falls, New York, was evicted from his federally subsidized housing in December of this year for using a vape pen. The facility, which has a âzero toleranceâ policy on âdrug useâ (except alcohol and pharmaceuticals) kicked Flickner to the curb in the freezing cold despite the fact that he uses a wheelchair and has a doctorâs recommendation to consume medical cannabis per state law.
All because federal law still sees him as a wonton criminal. So he ended up in a homeless shelter. Thankfully, a public outcry led his old landlords to allow him back home.
Buzz: Utah Legalized Medical Cannabis
In October, as Utah citizens prepared to vote on Proposition 2, a statewide medical cannabis ballot initiative, Democratic state senator Jim Dabakis decided to head out on a fact-finding tripâin more ways than one. Claiming heâd never tried cannabis before in his life, Dabakis drove to Nevada, bought a cannabis-infused gummy, and then posted a live video feed of himself on social media as he ate the edible.

On election night, Proposition 2 passed with sizable majority, but instead of enacting the law as written, lawmakers in Utah signed off on a âcompromise billâ thatâs more restrictive than Proposition 2 but has wider political support.
Bummer: âJust Say No to Nazi Weedâ
Bethany Sherman, formerly the owner of OG Analytics, a cannabis testing lab in Oregon, filed a defamation lawsuit in October against online anti-fascist activists after they exposed her alleged ties to local white nationalists.
She claims that when Antifa activists publicized her posts to social media and message boards, they took them âout of context.â Then she hired an attorney to defend her who is a self-described white nationalist.
Allegations against Sherman included that she baked swastika-shaped cookies for a celebration of Adolf Hitlerâs birthday (which is also, coincidentally, 4/20). Buzz: Cannabis Equity Programs Expand Opportunities
In late November, Blunt + Moore, the first dispensary to get permitted as part of Oakland, Californiaâs far reaching cannabis equity program, held their grand opening in a small, sleek retail space just across the highway from Oracle Arena, home of the Golden State Warriors.
The shopâs proprietor, Alphonso T Blunt, Jr., is a 31-year-old, fourth generation Oakland resident who started selling cannabis when he was just 16. He qualified for the equity program based on a previous felony conviction, and having lived in a neighborhood disproportionately targeted for cannabis arrests.
Blunt told Leaflyâs David Downs he could never have made it into the legal industry without the programâs assistance in getting licensed and attracting investors.
âHad you asked me even a year ago, I thought it wouldnât happen. I canât even put into words how it feels.â
But reviews of the equity program have been mixed, with critics arguing it so far has a disappointing track record for actually bringing equity-approved businesses online.
The effort has meanwhile inspired other municipalities and states to follow suit. In September, California passed a statewide Cannabis Equity Act, and undoing the damage of the War on Drugs has now become a standard part of the legalization conversation around the world.
