What has the scotgov done
Just utterly bored at the pretence that we’re being wildly innovative. Appointing the former Chief Operating Officer of Skyscanner as “Chief Entrepreneur” where he’s not an entrepreneur at all. He’s never built a business from scratch.
Also Skyscanner isn’t a Scottish victory. It’s a Scottish company that ‘unicorned’ but instead of making it a global company with Scotland as its home, it was sold to Chinese megacorp Ctrip.
It’s always a good headline to say “We need kids to start coding from a young age” but what’s the point if they’re just going to get hoovered up by giant corporations? You can’t talk about innovation if you’re not going to pile money into start-ups.
Every party in Parliament tries to talk up ‘Silicon Glen’ - Scotland’s answer to Silicon Valley - but the investor community here don’t invest in software, support from government bodies like Scottish Enterprise don’t follow through with meaningful support and start-ups are left in the lurch.
For example, in Scotland it’s easy to get stuck in what I call the ‘Start-Up Circuit’ - you can pitch your business to a bunch of different groups running competitions and get grant money to fund development for your Minimum Viable Product (MVP) - but once you have built that MVP you then need an influx of cash to hire developers (who are being offered fuckloads of cash from megacorps - some salaries at £120K with benefits) to Polish the product and commercialise it.
In Scotland, the investor community don’t follow through with the influx. So we have half-baked innovative ideas that fall completely through the gaps. It absolutely does my head in. We need to stop being so risk averse.

#AscottCentralWuxi
I was invited to attend the year-end Christmas party celebration of the Filipino community in Wuxi, P.R.C.
Tumblr media
And because of this . . .
I’ve decided to ask a friend who happens to manage one of Wuxi’s hotels - it’s an international brand for which I trusted most. I sent him a private message asking whether there’s availability for Saturday (2020/12/19). Luckily, I got a booking via my friend’s account - I was worried at first as I couldn’t find rooms via Ctrip.
Ctrip is amongst the most commonly used APP in China for hotel, flights, and train bookings.
But honestly, aside from attending the Filipino Community Year-End Party, I’d like to check what the hotel is offering - sauna, steam bath, food, and the room of course!
I was excited to go to Wuxi from Jiangyin. But, because of my prior commitment with the webinar offered by Purdue University, I’ve attended it first then went to Wuxi after two hours or at noon. It wasn’t a relaxing trip as I’m still using walk-in crutches and I need to save a little for an expensive Didi service. Well, to cut the story short, I took the bus and arrived at the Wuxi City at 1:00 in the afternoon.
It wasn’t that far, but you need to endure all sort of “bus experience “ of which I’ve got no choice as it’s my choice of transportation. Another hassling experience is my Didi service from Wuxi Passenger’s Terminal Station to Ascott Central due to my ”worst” Chinese language, that enables me to give a concrete direction as the place of location for pick up. But despite those, I managed to book another car and arrived in safety in the hotel.
Upon arrival, I must comply with the needed documents, including my health code upon check-in, and so far, I got all of those. I mace it sure that I coordinated well to avoid getting tagged as a lousy client.
Voila! I was given a room with a fantastic view, but of course, it wasn't as homey as the one I usually got at Somerset Harmony City (Wuxi). I'm used with laundry and kitchenette in a room; the passage seems too tight for someone who uses walk-in-crutches. . .
and I was a little bit disappointed that both steam and sauna services aren't available. It's the basic standard that I'm always considering for a hotel to get my 100% recommendation, plus, I think the cleaners aren't  cleaning some areas that well. Just say, for example, the dressing table, it was dusty, I hope they can instruct their janitorial/cleaning department to be very particular about it, much more than we are currently in a pandemic situation - cleanliness matters a lot!
I've also ordered a spring chicken (Korean dish), it wasn't that satisfying, and it seems more Chinese than Koreans.
The night view of my room is amazingly fantastic for 500 RMB. I had a literal awesome night in that hotel room, much more at morning time where'd I've to see how the city changes, from a quiet night to bustling city life. I'll definitely go back to this hotel - and hopefully, will get a more satisfying experience!
I've also tried their food at breakfast as I was given a complimentary stub: the setting is another exhilarating experience, it's well-arranged according to your food preferences. I wish staff can talk in English, I mean, they're good at it, all they just need is to train the existing team (linguistically) to ensure that the international image of Ascott is maintained.
By the way, I have chosen the window table to see the outer view from the dining room, and it's another lovely view for me as I usually observe the activities of those people outside the building, more so what city life is in Wuxi.
I hope to check in again one of these days.
That's all folks!

3 Reasons Why Commercial Support Is Essential To OpenCart
Tumblr media
OpenCart is an eCommerce solution. It's a PHP-based software, with a MySQL database and various HTML elements. There's also support for other languages and international currencies. It's free to use under the GNU General Public License as long as you abide by its terms of service. Since it was released in 2010, there's already quite a lot of use out there.
A good number of people who use Opencart Türkiye as their e-commerce builder have encountered some difficulties, though. These obstacles range from the easy to the not-so-easy ones. There are technical support and updates that you might need if you're having trouble with your OpenCart setup. And some of the glitches come straight from the OpenCart code itself.
There is, however, a way to overcome these difficulties. You can upgrade to the most recent version of OpenCart, 3.4, which fixes a number of the more glaring issues with this eCommerce platform. Some of the most notable upgrades from OpenCart to the latest version include: OpenID application integration, which offers a user authentication and password solution for online accounts. This was one of the primary reasons why so many people preferred to use OpenCart as their eCommerce platform of choice.
Another upgrade that OpenCart 3.4 brought to the table was the addition of a built-in shopping cart solution. It's built right into the platform, meaning that you don't have to download and install any additional software to use an existing shopping cart on your site. This is an excellent upgrade for both beginners and experts in eCommerce. Instead of spending time learning and installing additional software, users will be able to utilize an all in one solution that eliminates the need for extensive programming or installation.
The third major upgrade to OpenCart involves its web hosting service. Web hosting is perhaps the biggest drawback that users run into when choosing an e-commerce software solution. Most web hosting providers require you to host your store on their server, which can make the process of securely securing your information extremely difficult. This problem is completely eliminated with OpenCart, which utilizes its own in house SSL certificates along with its own self-hosted virtual hosts. This is a great step in improving the security of your online transactions.
A fourth upgrade to OpenCart that was recently added is the ability to install open source component code directly into the product itself. This feature is very useful for users who are interested in building their own extensions or customizations to the OpenCart platform. For example, if you feel that the product you are selling is lacking in some area, you may be able to add the necessary functionality to it by adding some simple code that allows you to collect additional data. This upgrade will also allow you to easily add new features and fix bugs that become undetected by current versions of OpenCart and other e-commerce software solutions. It also makes it much easier to add new web hosting servers if you feel the need.
One final upgrade that was recently added to OpenCart is the built-in e-commerce platform support. This is extremely helpful when it comes to allowing you to offer a fully functioning online store that utilizes all of the latest advancements in online marketing. The improvements include: full featured Google checkout, built-in SEO, built-in catalog creation, product catalogs, shopping cart functionality, and more. The upgrades should greatly improve your ability to compete with other online retailers.
OpenCart has been around for quite a while and it continues to gain more popularity among e-commerce merchants. If you have a small business and would like the ability to easily manage your online store, then this is definitely a great option. Although there are other options available such as Ctrip and PayPal, not many people are aware of the extensive customization options that OpenCart offers. If you would like to learn more about this software and why it is superior to the competition, please read the next two articles which will detail 3 reasons why commercial support is essential to running an efficient online store.

8 Chinese Websites YOU Want to Know
Tumblr media
Every country has popular websites.
If you want or are learning Chinese, you should not miss the following Chinese websites.
Not only can you learn more Chinese knowledge from these websites, but also know about Chinese people’s hobbies, habits, customs and things that you can’t learn from school or textbooks.
1.Baidu
(百度,bǎi dù)
——Chinese google
2.YouKu (优酷, yōu kù)- Chinese YouTube
3.Weixin(微信,wēi xìn)-Chinese WhatsApp
4.Jingdong (京东, jīng dōng)  – Amazon of China
5.Ctrip (携程, xié chéng) – China’s Best Travel Site
6.Meituan takeaway
( měi tuán wài mài)– the ninth wonder of the world
7.Zhihu(知乎 zhī hū)-Chinese Quora
8.Mandarinclass101
-the best spoken Chinese website
1.Baidu
(百度,bǎi dù www.baidu.com)
——Chinese google
If you want to find really free Chinese learning materials, please go to Baidu instead of Google. The reasons are given below:
Baidu is often called “China’s Google” because of its more localized algorithms.
The most important thing is that it is the largest search engine in China and the second largest in the world.
And has its own map system, image search, and news services.
Therefore,no matter what you want to search for learning: in Chinese materials or learning tools ,it is far more efficient than other search engines.
Now,
Baidu is the most popular Chinese search engine in China.
Most of the sources of the 7 best free online Chinese tutor websites we recommended before are due to Baidu.
2.YouKu (优酷, yōu kù www.youku.com)- Chinese YouTube
Youku is a highly recognized Chinese video website in China.
Friends who want to learn Chinese must seize this very interesting way to learn, because you can watch original free Chinese movies and TV series here, and all of them are with subtitles. Some translated American movies and TV series are also available with bilingual subtitles, making it an excellent and not-to-be-missed for learning Chinese Websites
With an estimated user base of between 9 and 100 million, Youku is one of the most popular streaming platforms in China.
Many friends think that Youku’s name was chosen because its pinyin is similar to YouTube. It is undeniable that youtube is the largest video platform in the world, but this statement is actually nonsense. Youku and youtube have very different pronunciations. Needless to say, many Chinese people are unaware that youtube exists.
3.Weixin(微信,wēi xìn www.weixin.qq.com)-Chinese WhatsApp
No matter your purpose of learning Chinese is to make friends and chat with Chinese people, come to China for tourism or doing foreign trade business, as long as you want to have a deep understanding of Chinese people and establish a good understanding and interaction, this free chat (text, voice, video) tool is the only unique tool, pay attention to the word: unique.
Because it is the real-time communication tool used by all Chinese people.
According to statistics, as of June 2022, WeChat has 1.3 billion active users
Although WeChat is essentially a platform for chatting and communication, its payment function and positioning function are also a huge convenience for you to travel in China. Almost every merchant, including grocery shopping aunties on the street, has a WeChat Pay QR code. WeChat’s online payment has achieved great success in China. Let’s put it this way, even if you regard it as China’s paypal, it’s  a nice and fitting analogy.
4.Jingdong (京东, jīng dōng www.jd.com)  – Amazon of China
JD.com is a self-operated e-commerce company in China,yet 46th in Fortune Global 500 in 2022
Friends who want to shop in China must check this Chinese shopping website:
Some people have compared Amazon in the United States with JD.com in China.
This friend stayed in China before and bought things on JD.com, so he is very familiar with JD.com. Currently in the US, though, he buys on Amazon.
One day, A funny idea suddenly occurred to him .
He wanted to find out which products on Amazon and JD.com have the cheapper price and which one has the faster delivery speed, and then he got a comparison.
So he called his brother in China to buy the same charger.
The price is there since the order was placed, and the charger is available for $7.99 in the US. His younger brother bought it for 21.99 yuan on JD.com in China, including delivery.
Delivered on the third day of purchase on Amazon, and on the second day of purchase on JD.com.
It can be seen that the goods of the same quality, the Chinese shopping website JD.com has fast logistics and transportation, and the price is good. It is worth recommending to foreign friends who have shopping needs in China. In addition, if you want to buy high-quality and cheap Jingdong electronic products, please take the time to learn Chinese,or you could hardly read the local version of JD.com
5.
Ctrip (携程, xié chéng www.ctrip.com) – China’s Best Travel Site
A must-use Chinese travel website for friends who want to travel to China.
Ctrip is a reliable travel software that I have used for many years.
Although Ctrip’s hotels may not be the cheapest among all travel websites, they have the largest number of choices, especially when booking hotels outside China. And there are also more choices for combination air tickets; What most travelers like about Ctrip is that the English customer service is online 24 hours a day, and their response speed is fast and the ability to deal with problems is very strong, which makes people feel very reassured. Now Ctrip’s tour group products are not bad.  The Visa business is also good, for buying tickets with Ctrip is efficient and worry-free for their customers
If you ask:
Are there any other good Chinese travel websites to recommend?
THE ANSWER WII BE:
Friends with limited budgets can also consider Qunar when traveling to China, but the service will be discounted, which is recognized.
On the other hand,
If your spoken Chinese is good, you can communicate with Qunar’s customer service without any problems, then you can save a little money by sacrificing some of the travel experience.
If your budget is sufficient and the Chinese level is not enough to support the whole process of barrier-free communication, it is better to choose Ctrip
Ps:It has English service (localized versions in German, French, Vietnamese and Russian at the same price).
6.Meituan takeaway
(Meituan takeaway, měi tuán wài mài www.meituan.com)
– the ninth wonder of the world
The takeaway ordering screen that often appears in the United States is: in a party scene, pizza and other food delivery services often need to be booked by phone, and then a series of processes such as the user or the restaurant contacting the delivery company, picking up the goods and delivering them to the door. It often takes hours for a pizza to be delivered to your home.
It’s a shame if you’re traveling in China and don’t know that Meituan can deliver hot, delicious meals to your door in half an hour. Because you missed the best food delivery website in China
Friends traveling in China, if you want to eat the most authentic and original Chinese food but don’t know where to go, and you have already learned a small amount of Chinese, then you should try your best to find food that represent the customs of China, then Meituan Takeaway is your easiest choice, Pick up the phone and try it now!
7.
Zhihu(知乎 zhī hū www.zhihu.com)-Chinese Quora
The biggest difference between this Chinese website and ordinary forums is that there are some professionals who answer questions in different fields, and their knowledge level is higher than that of the forum. Compared with other knowledge platforms, Zhihu’s professionalism is revealed.
Many good articles on Zhihu can be translated directly to CNN without any problem.
The total number of content exceeds 3 million, and the annual number of visits exceeds 3 billion.
The brand mission is to “enable people to better share knowledge, experience and insights and find their own answers”
Therefore, if you have a certain knowledge of Chinese and have some insurmountable difficulties in the process of learning Chinese, you can ask questions on Zhihu, in a similar way to quora.
The native speakers who will answer your questions include Chinese teachers, doctors, scholars, engineers and other experts in various industries.
How do you feel about that?
Got a problem?
Go to Zhihu.
8.Mandarinclass101

New normal in virus-hit China: High-tech tracking and fever checks
WENZHOU, China: Constant temperature checks, a "no mask, no service" ethos, and high-tech people-tracking: welcome to the new normal in China, where reminders of the country's national mobilisation against the coronavirus lurk around every corner.
China appears to be coming to grips with the virus, which emerged late last year and has infected more than 80,000 people and killed nearly 3,000 in the country, but has slowed markedly in recent weeks.
But that has come at the cost of new preventive policies that have turned life upside down and are not likely to be swiftly abandoned.
The changes wrought by a contagion spread by humans and their travels is particularly felt when trying to move around within China, as AFP journalists discovered during recent trips from Shanghai up to the borders of the viral epicentre of Hubei province.
Reminders of the virus begin as soon as one leaves home, with masked cab drivers in white gloves quick to admonish any passengers who forget to wear masks.
One worker at a time, virus-hit China's factories sputter back online
Chinese coat maker adapts to make hazmat suits
China reports lowest number of new virus cases since January
Some drivers are going even further. In the city of Wenzhou, about four hours by train from Shanghai, AFP reporters jumped into car called via Didi Chuxing -- China's answer to Uber -- in which a clear plastic barrier was stretched over a makeshift frame to separate driver and passengers.
Didi Chuxing piloted the project in a handful of hard-hit cities and plans to spend 100 million yuan ($14 million) to expand it.
- 'Sold-out' trains -
Travellers booking tickets aboard the country's efficient high-speed rail network lately are surprised to find that, despite travel being depressed by virus fears, popular booking apps like Ctrip invariably list most trains as "sold out" or with only a handful of seats left.
But one such Wenzhou-bound train was full of empty seats. That is because only a fraction of tickets are being made available to prevent travellers sitting too close to each other.
"We are sorry for the confusion, but China's high-speed rail systems are contributing to the patriotic hygiene campaign. We hope you find this convenient," said a young female train attendant.
With the government calling for an all-out "People's War" against the virus, tech champions like Alibaba and Tencent have rolled out digital mobile-phone apps that use big data to track a traveller's movements going back as far as a month.
Users are rated as green, yellow or red based on whether they visited any high-risk zones.
Showing one's code to security personnel is now compulsory in a number of cities to exit train stations, or use public transport.
In Wenzhou, cab drivers, hotels, and virtually any business will ask to see the colour code before letting someone pass.
The system has fuelled new grumbling on China's internet over previous accusations that the big tech firms were doing the Communist Party's surveillance work.
But most complaints seem to involve "green" ratings inexplicably turning "red", which can result in mandatory 14-day home quarantine.
The pervasive measures attest to the one-party state's ability to marshal huge resources -- financial, material, and human -- for mass campaigns couched in 1950s Communist rhetoric.
Red banners hang throughout now largely shut-down cities like Wenzhou, lauding the "War of Resistance Against Pneumonia", and declaring that "Everyone Must Contribute to the Patriotic Hygiene Campaign."
- Elbow bump -
Hotel check-ins have become mini health inspections by masked staff who measure guests' temperatures by aiming hand-held sensors at foreheads and forearms and record the result.
"Have you experienced any fever, felt unwell or visited Hubei recently?" a Wenzhou front-desk clerk asked.
The temperature obsession can be taken to absurd lengths, with some hotels re-measuring guests who had stepped out only minutes earlier.
On one day, an AFP reporter moving around Wenzhou had his temperature taken a dozen times, including by cab drivers, restaurant owners, convenience-store clerks, hotel security, front-desk staff and a final late-night knock on the door by a female hotel employee.
"Do not walk forward! Be still please," she snapped, before a light beep announced the result.
"It's normal. Enjoy your evening."
Beijing is pushing a long-term fight and local governments will no doubt be fearful of letting up even slightly anytime soon and being blamed for a new outbreak.
That means even some of society's most time-honoured practices are on hold.
When an AFP reporter presented a business card to a government liaison officer in Wenzhou, she recoiled and asked that it be placed on a table.
And when it came time to shake another official's hand, the man refused, laughing nervously.
"For safety, we don't really shake hands at the current time," he said, instead sticking forward the crook of his arm for an "elbow bump."

GUEST ANALYSIS Three ways to win shoppers during Chinese New Year (and beyond)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Myles Dawson is managing director, Adyen UK
For us in the West, New Year feels like a distant memory. But, while we’re in the midst of ‘Dry Veganuary’, celebrations in China are just about to kick off.
It’s a peak travel season with a growing number of tourists coming to the UK. In fact, flight arrivals from China between September and November were 23% higher than the same period last year. And, these visitors are willing to spend. From January to March 2018, visitors spent a record £123 million in the UK, on average £1,680 per visit – almost three times the market average.
That’s a huge opportunity for retailers who are looking for ways to push up profits and increase in-store footfall. But amazingly, our research reveals that only 43% of retail and hospitality businesses believe that Chinese consumers in the UK are an important target audience – evidence that some retailers are missing a trick.
If you are interested in tapping into this opportunity, it’s important to understand how to effectively target Chinese consumers. Back in the day, it was easy; you simply had to partner with tour operators for busloads of Chinese tourists to be delivered to your door. But these days, Chinese travellers are more independent and more discerning. They make their own travel arrangements and rely on recommendations from friends, family, and social media.
The key to successfully targeting Chinese shoppers in the UK can be broken down into three parts:
    1. Entice shoppers through social media
Months before visiting the UK, Chinese consumers begin their research on brands. So communication must begin well in advance of departure. And, to get it right, you’ll need to understand your audience, their journey, and the platforms they’re using.
We all know about Millennials and Gen X. But in China, demographics are much more granular. You’ve got Post-80s (those early initiators of Chinese consumerism); Post-90s (luxury enthusiasts); Post-95s (social media shoppers); and Post-00s (less impressed by mainstream brands). These demographics are active on different social media platforms, from WeChat to Weibo to QQ. So, each segment needs a tailored strategy targeted via different channels.
This might sound complicated, but it’s worth the effort; up to 70% of China’s younger consumers prefer to buy products through social media channels. And don’t forget the all-powerful social media influencers or Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs). They have millions of followers and can make and break a brand with their reviews. They also have fantastic customer insights and can be an invaluable asset.
    2. Excite shoppers with great in-store experiences
Chinese shoppers have travelled a long way and are looking for products that will stand out back home. Bespoke items are popular as are limited editions. And in this selfie age, a branded backdrop in your store can be a sure-fire way of making it onto people’s newsfeeds.
Mobile is also an important consideration. China remains the global leader in mobile payments, accounting for 60% of the worldwide user base. And the use of QR codes to make purchases is universal; codes can be found on everything from vending machines, to print and outdoor media, in-store items, and menus. Consumers can even use their smartphones to virtually queue for busy restaurants. eMarketer predicts that by 2021, 79.3% of smartphone users in China will be scanning, swiping, and tapping to make a payment.
All this helps to streamline the purchase process. Chinese shoppers in the UK expect the same convenience, which leads us neatly on to the Golden Triangle of Chinese payment methods.
  Alipay
With over one billion users and counting, Alipay is the leading payments and lifestyle platform for Chinese shoppers in Europe. It also offers a range of free marketing tools. For example, you can send push notifications to all Alipay users within 200 meters of your store.
  UnionPay
The world’s largest card scheme, UnionPay covers almost 80% of the payment share in China and is popular for making high-value purchases.
  WeChat Pay
The social platform WeChat is so ingrained into the lives of its users that someone who loses their smartphone in China is likely to say: ‘I’ve lost my WeChat.’ It’s also an advertising channel where retailers can display brand information and communicate with shoppers. It’s committed to expanding its footprint across Europe and we’re seeing some interesting developments as it ramps up competition in the region.
It’s good to give the Chinese consumer the choice to pay with their preferred payment method at any given time, so it’s best to offer all three.
    3. Engage with shoppers long after the sale
If you know when and how to target your customers, you’ll continue selling to them when they return home. A good place to start is Ctrip. It’s an online travel agency-come-social platform where returning tourists can write reviews and share experiences. Ctrip’s latest program, Trip Moments, encourages tourists to upload photos and videos from both inside and outside stores. Ctrip then links the photos to your official store page. Other popular review platforms are Dianping, (Chinese TripAdvisor), Zhihu (Chinese Quora), and Mafengwo (online travel agency).
And of course, timing is everything. Chinese New Year is a great opportunity to boost your marketing efforts. But it doesn’t stop there. There are more than 80 calendar events you could potentially campaign around, meaning the opportunity for attracting, engaging with, and selling to Chinese shoppers is year-long.

Business Trip to China - Advice
A couple of us from team BabyHub travelled to China to visit our factory, meet buyers and exhibit at the NECC in China
Our destination was Shanghai, on the east coast of China, and the surrounding provinces.
Preparation for travel to China includes:
Research: Up to date information https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china
Organise your visa. We very carefully checked the requirements and did these ourselves by post, rather than pay a visa arrangement service. They cost £175 each. You will need a letter of invitation from a Chinese business which must be written in a certain way. You can check this on visaforchina Your passport must have 6 months plus remaining. You will need photos, photocopies of your passports, copies of the invitation letter, forms to fill out (from visaforchina) a signed declaration, stamped addressed return Royal Mail envelopes and payment details page. All this must be sent with your passport by registered Royal Mail post to one of the three UK centres. We chose Edinburgh as it had the shortest delay. Allow at least 6 weeks. As a resident of the UK or British islands you will get a 2 year visa.
Download WeChat to your phone. This is the Chinese communication app
Tumblr media
WeChat is still in development for use outside China but worth trying as EVERYONE uses it for EVERYTHING in China
Get a short translation into Mandarin Chinese of the main points of your product/business
Have flyers/business cards made which will ideally have one side in English and one side in Chinese including your Chinese paragraph/sentence and if possible, your WeChat QR code
If you use Gmail, get another email address! Generally people in China cannot easily access Gmail, Facebook etc. They can use Yahoo, so we used a Yahoo email address
Arrange meetings – best to allow some time following arrival to catch up on sleep. Organise for a translator/your agent to be at meetings
Organise your flights. If you’re taking connecting flights to a major airport, make sure your flights are “through travel” Then your luggage goes all the way through and if there are delays, you’ll be sent on the next available flight. This is one time when I didn’t arrange  my flights online but went face to face with a travel agent
Organise accommodation Tripadvisor link Booking.com link We can recommend the Sofitel Shanghai Hongqiao for the NECC
Get some Yuan. Although it’s easy to get yuan using a debit card in cash machines, it’s handy to have some for your first taxi from the airport
Print out some notes showing your hotel’s full address in Chinese to show to taxi drivers
Check the weather forecast – Shanghai has 8 months of hot summer and when we went every day was 40 degrees
Your flight:
We travelled by Emirates which was very good, organized by British Airways. This was my first time travelling long haul. My tips include:
Tumblr media
Wear clothes you can sleep in. Slip on shoes, casual exercise type clothes and layers.
Cabin baggage should include a main bag with your essentials for the trip – in case your hold luggage gets lost. This bag can be stowed in the overhead lockers. Then take another bag – laptop bag/shopper, which includes the things you might want on the plane – a book, reading glasses, iPad, phone, charger, tissues, small cosmetics, toothpaste, deodorant in a clear plastic bag, painkillers, passport and boarding passes.
Try to get an aisle seat. If you’re blocked in by someone who’s taken medication to sleep through the flight it’s bloody difficult to move them (as we discovered on the first leg) and you’ll need to get up to use the toilet/walk about
If you’re travelling with small children, you can put up the elbow rests and stretch out across the seats (if you can get the kids to go to sleep!) and lay the kids on top.
Be prepared for hole in the floor toilets at stopover airports
 While in China:
On arrival at the airport, don’t spend ages in a queue of Chinese people waiting to go through customs. There will be a separate place for foreigners and you will have to look for the signs. Don’t worry if you can’t see them – an official will come and tell you but don’t spend 15 minutes in the wrong queue as we did!
You will need to present your details on an arrival card which you will have filled in on the plane. Keep back the part for departure for when you return (although there are spare cards on the return at the airport in case you have lost it)
Only use registered taxis. At the airport you may be approached by people offering to drive you to your hotel, but look for the taxi rank and queue there instead
Your hotel can summon taxis for you and give you a note with the name of your destination in Chinese
Be prepared for lots of unfinished building development. For example, although our hotel was close to the NECC it was not possible to walk there. There was as yet no way for a pedestrian to cross the river and the only access between the two was motorway flyover.
Travel by bullet train if going far – our experience was of spotlessly clean, comfortable trains on time. I had bought the train tickets on Ctrip, a few weeks before travelling. The first class seats get fully booked, so allow a few weeks if possible. You will be emailed a code, so take the print out to the train station for them to give you the tickets. Then you’ll have to queue for your platform. There was someone selling snacks on our train – vacuum packed fish and meat snacks. We chose the popcorn!
Be prepared for scary road trips. Expect traffic jams around the cities and people will drive on any side of the road in the provinces. When out walking you must look out for cars, scooters and bikes. It’s not unusual for them to go through red lights.
In some parts of China you may be the only Westerner around. Don’t be surprised if people stare and children ask to take selfies with you.
Be very polite, accept offerings with both hands, present your card with both hands
Ask for help! Once when lost we asked a local man for help. He drove us to our hotel! People called taxis for us.
 Enjoy your trip!

WeChat e-wallet teams up with Line to target Japan’s 7M Chinese tourists
China’s biggest chat app WeChat is set to make its payments service more ubiquitous in Japan, a popular outbound desitnation for Chinese tourists.
On Tuesday, the Tencent-run messenger unveils a partnership with Japan’s Line chat app on mobile payments. The tie-up allows Japanese brick-and-mortar merchants with a Line Pay terminal to process WeChat Pay transactions directly. Instead of going through the hassle of currency swaps, a Chinese customer can simply summon the WeChat app and pay by scanning a QR code the retailer presents.
The fresh alliance is hot on the heels of a similar gesture from Tencent’s most serious rival, Alibaba. In September, the Chinese ecommerce giant’s payments affiliate Alipay teamed up with Yahoo Japan in an effort to grab Chinese outbound travelers.
Tencent did not provide information on the number of potential Japanese retailers reached through the scheme when inquired by TechCrunch . But the firm says its setup with Line Pay allows small and medium-sized businesses to adopt mobile payments at relatively low costs because it doesn’t require merchants to purchase QR code scanners.
Both WeChat Pay and Alipay have already been going it alone in Japan over the past few years. WeChat Pay, for instance, claims that it scored a six-fold increase in the number of transactions in Japan between June 2017 and 2018.
On the other hand, having an ally with an extensive local reach can help Alibaba and Tencent capitalize on a wave of increasingly sophisticated Chinese tourists.
The partnership with Line “significantly boosts WeChat Pay’s penetration among small and medium-sized retailers and its application in more daily scenarios, rather than serving Chinese people only at traditional tourism hotspots,” says a Tencent spokesperson. “This strategy is in line with an upgraded demand from Chinese people to travel like locals.”
Japan’s appeal to Chinese people is on the rise. During China’s weeklong “Golden Week” national holiday in October, Japan leapfrogged Thailand for the first time to become the most popular destination for Chinese tourists, according to a report from Chinese online travel agency Ctrip. In 2017, the Japan National Tourism Organization recorded a total of 7.36 million Chinese tourists, who made up more than a quarter of all visitors to Japan that year.
