Birthday presents:
Gaz plans out an entire day. From the moment you wake up to when you go to bed. Doing all of your favorite things, going to your favorite places, punctuated by snacks and meals at your favorite restaurants and cafes. And you get a teddy bear, that’s the rule. Every major gift occasion must come with a teddy bear.
Soap buys you something you had no idea you needed. Something you end up using every day. Something perfect. And on top of that, he makes you in insanely complex card. He’s one of those freaks who feel down the card making rabbit hole, so now he has a die cutter, embossing folders, about a million stamps and colors of ink, embossing powder in every color, etc.
Ghost becomes your personal chef for the day. Literally anything you want. As long as it doesn’t contain anything endangered, he will cook it. And he’ll take you with him to get all the ingredients— have a nice drive, buy you all your special snacks you can’t get at your usual store. He does require that if you want a stew or slow cooked meal, or something with marinade, you do have to notify him 24 hours in advance. He also gets you a children’s birthday card and crosses out the number on it with marker and writes your age. “Congratulations birthday girl, you’re 6 25!”
Price gets you a new charm for your charm bracelet, and a nice classy piece of jewelry. Something simple, beautiful, and personal. Engraved, of course. And a beautiful cake from the nicest bakery you know— even if it’s in another country (Nik owes him).
König gets you, first of all, an enormous assortment of chocolate. I think he takes a lot of pride in the quality of Austrian and German chocolate. Probably also commissions a custom medallion from his favored chocolatier. Besides that, he plans a getaway. Somewhere you can go and just not be bothered for a week or so. He often feels guilty about how much time you spend apart, so he takes every opportunity to try to make it up.
Nikolai just gives you a good old fashioned shopping spree. Anything for his gorgeous darling malýshka. And in any country you want as long as it has non-hostile airspace. You really can go shopping in Milan, Paris, and New York City in the same day if you want. That’s what you get for dating a pilot!
Rudy gets you the nicest version whatever it is that you use. If you like nail polish or lipstick, he’ll get you Charlotte Tillbury. If you like silver (in jewelry or houseware) he’ll get Tiffany. If you like pewter he’ll get Royal Selangor. It’s always something very nicely made and/or something that will last a very long time.
Nikto will get you something impossibly sentimental. Say, for example, that you lamented to him about your favorite childhood stuffed animal that had been lost when you’d had a small house fire, or when you’d cut ties with your family. You will wake up on your birthday to that exact make and model of stuffed animal, no longer how long ago you lost it, doesn’t matter if it’s no longer produced. He will perform minor miracles for you.

Question for Readers!
I'm an author and I hate signing my books, because I cannot reliably reproduce a pretty, legible signature.
Would you be happy if you asked an author to sign your copy of a book and they broke out one of these things?
And instead of signing with ink embossed a signature into the page of your choice?
Please reblog for spread

Book time! I want to post all my new stuff but don't want to flood people with them, so I waited a bit after my last one to put this one up, but I can't wait any longer to show it off. This is The Rose and the Serpent, a Good Omens Beauty and the Beast AU by Atalan. I know there's some kind of fairy tale fic event going on in the fandom right now but this one is from a few years back, so if that's your thing and you're impatient go check this one out.
I'm totally in love with how this one came out. It's like, if you had a cartoon character who's reading a plot-relevant book of fairy tales, this is the book you'd draw for them. Belle has this book. It's perfect for its niche. The front cover is burgundy cardstock with brown faux leather on the spine, and antique-brass-finish photo corners to protect the edges. The rose was done with gold embossing powder and a stamp, since I can't draw and those lines are too fine for the cricut. The batch of books I'm working through now is my first time experimenting with legal quarto size (legal size paper (8.5x14 in.) folded twice) and everyone who raved about it is right. It's very satisfying to hold and was a joy to make.
Check out the rest of my photos under the cut!

Close up of the photo corners and a view of the spine. I've never used photo corners before, partly because I don't ever see them on commercial books, but they just felt right for this project so I felt it was time to experiment. I didn't glue them down, just clamped them closed with jewelry pliers, and I was worried they wouldn't stay in place but they seem to be fine. Cardstock isn't a very hard-wearing material, and if it has a white core it tends to show at the corners of the book where it rubs against things, even under light handling. Hopefully the metal corners will protect it.
The spine title came out well. I was worried about matching the color with the embossing powder color on the front, but they came out fine and I'm very pleased.

Top view, with handmade red-and-green endbands and a green ribbon bookmark. Both of these were chosen to match the absolutely gorgeous endpapers with this mosaic flower pattern. They're chiyogami from ChibiJay and they're stunning; the photos don't do them justice. I bought them because they remind me of the stained glass windows in the Disney Beauty and the Beast. CJ has this great deal where you can make custom paper packs in pre-cut sizes for a discounted price, and they've got hundreds of patterns. This isn't sponsored, by the way, I just think they're awesome.

Some photos of the title page and first page of the story. I'm experimenting with DaFont some more. The one on the title page and for the chapter numbers is called Christmas Card, and the drop capital is called Floral Capitals, both free to use for personal projects. I've only done drop caps on a couple of projects, because for purely personal aesthetic reasons I don't like when they sink into the paragraph, but if I can mimic them by just making the first letter huge? Love that. Defintely going to keep doing that. Can never get the kerning to look right when I do it the regular way, but with this it isn't an issue.
The graphics on the title page are re-used from an older project, but they were so perfect for this one that I just went with it.
As I said above, this is my first legal quarto but it for sure won't be my last! There are three more in this batch, and they're so pleasant to hold that I'll for sure be making more before too long.

Kurama Samurai Armor Buildlog - The Armor Pt.1
Two years ago (!!!), I embarked on my first sewing cosplay build and first-ever samurai armor project. This was my interpretation of Kurama, the nine-tailed fox from Naruto, and it took about six months from start to finish for the initial version (the final version is pictured below). The design was heavily inspired by the Star Wars Samurai Art figures by Tamashii Nations and the incredible Naruto armor by bakkacosplay!

This post focuses on the making of the armor, specifically the Dou (chestplate) and Sode (shoulder/upper arm pieces). Future posts will cover the clothing, wig, tails, and makeup.
Planning the Armor
I knew I wanted to use EVA foam for the armor to keep it lightweight and allow maximum flexibility for customization. Up until this project, I primarily designed and 3D-printed armor for commissions, but this one-off design was all about creative freedom.
To refine the silhouette and determine how everything would fit together and attach, I visited the Samurai section at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC) to study the shapes and structures of historical armor. Incorporating Naruto’s iconic stomach seal and other subtle nods to the series was a priority, and these elements heavily influenced the final design. I mocked up the concept in Procreate, highlighting key design elements to ensure everything worked cohesively.

I started with a cardstock mockup to prototype the shapes and details. Cardstock is cheaper and more forgiving than EVA foam, making it perfect for trial runs.
The Dou (chestplate / cuirass)
With the base shape decided, I digitized the outline and added design details. I planned to use my laser cutter for the base design, carving by hand afterward to create a more weathered and textured look. For laser cutting, I created a vector file in Fusion360, though Illustrator would have worked too.
The original design felt a bit flat, so I incorporated the swirling cloud motif of the Akatsuki and added fiery edges for a dynamic, layered aesthetic. Digitizing this took forever but was totally worth it. (If I were to redo this now, I’d use Illustrator for speed!)
The laser cutting process required some trial and error to engrave rather than cut through the foam. Once dialed in, it was smooth sailing. Fresh off the laser cutter, the pieces looked flat, so I used a dremel and soldering iron to add depth and dimension. Each segment consisted of a base piece and a trim piece, which I glued together with contact cement after detailing. Rounding the edges with a dremel softened the look and tied everything together.

Initially, I wanted to carry the cloud pattern onto the backer pieces behind the main armor but found it too visually busy. Instead, I gave these pieces a hammered metal texture using a dremel with a round sanding tip, which allowed the detailed pieces to stand out more.
Sode (shoulder guards)
The process for the Sode (袖) followed a similar path: paper mockup, digitization, laser cutting, and detailing. I added a neckguard and upper chest plate to support the armor and hide attachment points. Here, I prioritized wearability and mobility over strict historical accuracy—an essential balance for costumes.

For the Sode pattern, I used a press rather than carving. I designed a stamp in Fusion360 with tiled motifs inspired by Naruto: the Village of the Leaf symbol, Naruto’s swirl, and the Nine-Tails. The stamp was 3D-printed in PETG for durability and used with an arbor press to emboss the foam. Heating the foam before pressing ensured clean transfers, but it meant waiting to shape the pieces until after sealing to preserve the designs.

Unfortunately, I didn’t document this part well, but I’ll create a dedicated post about embossing and sealing techniques in this series! Below is an image of the Sode after weathering and base-coating with metallic black, showing the embossed patterns clearly.
Neckguard and Chest Underlay
These pieces were made from 10mm foam for extra strength since they support much of the armor. Like the other parts, they were laser cut and detailed with a soldering iron. The underlay featured a hexagonal pattern with small circles, marking where I would later hand-sew accents.

For texture, I used a rock to create a natural, organic finish—simply heating the foam and "beating it up" with a textured surface. This technique was quick and gave a subtle, realistic look.

That wraps up Part 1 of the armor! Stay tuned for Part 2, where I’ll dive into the other armor pieces. Feel free to drop any questions below, and I’ll answer them as soon as I can!
