So - post canon au where Edwin and Charles encounter another dying boy, and for whatever reason (maybe the boy is scared of Charles because he's loud, or because he's from Edwin's time or something like that) the boy wants Edwin to stay with him alone, so Edwin does, also reads to him, talks with him and slowly accompanies him to his death, and besides an enormous amount of grief for another untimely death, Charles is also spinning out that Edwin’s doing the same thing he did with Charles, and they guide spirits to their deaths a lot, but somehow this one feels different because it's just so similar to how they met

There are conflicting thoughts in Charles - scolding himself for being an asshole who makes it about himself, fearing that the boy will also be taken with Edwin, just as Charles was, and that he'll want to stay with them forever, wondering if it had to be Charles or if Edwin would have loved any dying boy he had met that day

and now to lighten the mood:

"Charles, Connor told me he'd like to stay-"

"No!"

"-with his late grandmother for a while. Whatever do you mean 'no'?"

and

2 days later, out of nowhere: "Did you read to him too?"

"Charles! I thought the matter was settled!"

"Did you tuck him in or did YOU NOT?"

"I merely sent him off with a kind hand in his hair-"

"You petted his hair?!"

"Charles-"

"You didn't pet my hair!"

"I-"

"Pick a book. You're reading to me and petting my hair right now"

“paid in nonsense” is a currency I strive for

rewatching dead boy detectives rn and i love their attitude around payment. its a key factor in what cases they take on, but they get paid in nonsense. like… money for their medium to use as rent (despite the fact that edwin doesnt event like her), saltwater taffy that they cant eat, a cursed magic 8 ball that tells people when theyre gonna die (theyre already ghosts. they just want it bc its cool). i so badly wanna know what eclectic collection of ‘payment’ they have back at their office. i bet its so full of tat that they never touch. halfway on their way to being hoarders over the years.
