It Looks Like a Place for Collaboration!
Cultural competence is the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact effectively with people from different cultural backgrounds and history. This means working past differences, and working together towards a common good.
In DCAMM, there are many departments with a plethora of people from many different backgrounds. This creates a diverse pool of individuals who all have to work together and adapt to each other’s work ethic to make sure deadlines and deliverables are met and are well executed.

It Looks Like Massive!!!
We start our second day with a walking tour of the DCAMM buildings, guide by Brenda and Healy, who are interning with DCAMM this summer. During the tour, we explored the McCormack Building, the Mental Hospital, and Courthouse, learning many new things along the way. Some of these buildings were massive structures I hadn’t realized even existed.
Later, we attended overview meetings for each sector, including sessions with the Real Estate / P3 team, the Office of planning monthly team meeting, and the office of design and construction. DCAMM manages over 1,700 state properties, handling tasks such as maintenance, replacement, renovation, and consolidation. Lunch with the OP team was a great opportunity to share information and gain insight into their personal perspectives on work.

Wednesday at DCAMM's beautiful McCormack Building. The view from their office shows the best parts off what Boston has to offer. Our team was able to take us on a tour of the new State police building, previously known as the community boat house, right off the Charles River in Boston. The amazing crew gave us a tour and detailed descriptions of the bullet proof walls and showed us what goes into government designed facilities. @bac-connex

Governor Baker to Celebrate $72.5 Million Renovations at Roxbury Community College
BOSTON–Roxbury Community College (RCC) will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Thursday, October 5, 2017, at 1:30 p.m., marking the completion of substantial campus renovations, the first completed at RCC since the campus was constructed in 1985-1987.
The keynote speaker is Governor Charlie Baker. Other confirmed speakers for the event include President of RCC Dr. Valerie Roberson, Chairman of RCC’s Board of Trustees and Founder and CEO of Year Up Gerald Chertavian, and President and Founder of W.T. Rich Walter Rich.
“We were pleased to work with Roxbury Community College to renovate these important buildings for the campus and the surrounding community,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “The state is committed to continuing our work with the college and we look forward to many students enjoying these spaces for years to come.”
The ceremony marks the completion of renovations to the Media Arts Center (Building 1), the new Health Sciences Building (Building 4) and the first floor of Building 3, which now houses a new student commons, food service area and vastly-expanded bookstore. These renovations are designed by leading architecture firm NBBJ, whose experience working at academic institutions worldwide has led to its recognition as one of the most innovative architecture firms according to Fast Company.

The RCC community and members of the local medical community share excitement over the transformation of the former student center into a state-of-the-art Health Sciences Building. The building includes renovated classrooms, two Timothy Smith labs, a mock hospital, a nursing skills lab, and a mock pharmacy donated by CVS Health. The very realistic hospital features cutting-edge technology designed to train the next generation of healthcare professionals in Massachusetts. The new building and innovative nursing program curriculum, which includes the use of simulated patients that look like real people exhibiting signs of illness, provides students with a platform to build the skills that they need to succeed in a rapidly-changing healthcare field.
Thanks to a combination of state and private funds, the Media Arts Center is now a neighborhood destination. The auditorium has been equipped with new seats, carpeting, drapes, and a new BOSE sound system. The classrooms, bathrooms, elevators, and HVAC system were upgraded with state funds, to create a more comfortable learning environment.
“I’m thrilled to invite the community at large to celebrate these significant campus improvements, all of which greatly improve the student experience,” says Dr. Valerie Roberson, president of RCC. “These improvements show the state’s commitment to ensuring that community colleges receive both the equipment and facilities needed to prepare students for jobs in today’s competitive labor market.”
The total cost of the renovations is $72.5 million, funded by the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM). While campus renovations will continue through 2018, the ceremony marks the completion of a significant portion of the campus renovations, all of which were overseen by General Contractor W.T. Rich.
“Community Colleges have provided an important link to an individual’s ability to improve their skills”, said Walter T. Rich, president and founder of W.T. Rich Company. “The significant improvements at RCC have provided valuable tools for every graduate to further their goals. W.T. Rich wishes each and every RCC graduate the brightest possible future.”
The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m., in the Media Arts Center. The ceremony will be followed by a brief reception, in Building 3, and faculty and student-guided tours of the Media Arts Center, which will begin on the 2nd floor of Building 4. For more information, visit www.rcc.mass.edu or call Jordan Smock at 857-701-1234.

WESTFIELD — Cellular service on the Westfield State University campus is expected to significantly improve now that a new cell tower has been installed atop Scanlon Hall.
Westfield State partnered with the Mass. Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance (DCAMM) and Mass. State College Building Authority (MSCBA) on the project. The installation was completed earlier this month by Berkshire Wireless, a subcontractor for Verizon Wireless.
“Verizon recently has increased its network coverage and capacity at Westfield State University, with a new cell site near Scanlon Hall,” said Verizon Wireless in a statement. “It provides robust 4G LTE services throughout the campus, as well as parts of Route 20, Western Avenue, and the surrounding neighborhoods. The new cell site includes an emergency battery backup and generator to ensure 24/7 availability to services. We’re proud to have made this investment in the Westfield State University campus community.”
Improving cellular service on campus has been a decade in the making, according to Stephen Taksar, Westfield State’s vice president of administration and finance.
“We are thankful to our partners to complete the project to provide better and more reliable cell service on campus and in the surrounding community,” he said.
In addition to improved and more reliable cell service, the university will also generate revenue by leasing the space to the cellular provider. According to Taksar, a 10-year contract was signed, which will generate $240,000 over the term. The $24,000 per year will go toward the university’s Residential Life area to support services and programming for resident students.

Gilbane Promotes Mike O’Brien to Lead Boston and Northern New England Offices
BOSTON– Gilbane Building Company has announced the promotion of Mike O’Brien to business unit leader of their Massachusetts and Northern New England offices.
A 25-year construction industry veteran, O’Brien most recently served as vice president and operations manager of the region. He succeeds Ryan Hutchins, senior vice president of Gilbane Building Company, who will focus on New England divisional strategies.
In his new role, O’Brien will work with local leaders to increase Gilbane’s footprint in downtown Boston while overseeing the company’s work on such projects as TD Garden’s Expansion, Boston Beer Company’s new taproom at 60 State Street and the completion of the new PTC headquarters in the Seaport. He is also focused on promoting workforce diversity and attracting new generations to the construction trades. O’Brien is a strong advocate for construction safety and is particularly concerned with the opioid crisis affecting the construction industry.
O’Brien began his career at Gilbane in 1993 when he worked on the construction of the new TF Green Airport in Warwick, RI. After relocating to North Carolina for a two-year assignment, O’Brien returned to New England to deliver projects for several high-profile clients such as Fidelity Investments, State Street Bank and Pfizer. After assuming the role of Operations Manager in 2009, he provided leadership oversight to teams on some of Gilbane’s largest projects in Massachusetts, including DCAMM’s Worcester Recovery Center & Hospital and Alnylam Pharmaceuticals’ new biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Norton, MA.
“Mike has long been an integral part of our New England leadership team, working to ensure operational excellence in the region with a focus on customer satisfaction and safety,” said Hutchins. “He has also hired and guided the careers of many of Gilbane’s current and future leaders. This commitment to staff development, coupled with his strong operational focus and attention to detail, will assure Mike’s continued success as he leads the Boston office.”
O’Brien currently serves as the chairman of the Massachusetts chapter of the Associated General Contractors and is an Overseer on the Board of Trustees of the Boston Architectural College. A native of New England and a graduate of Boston University, he resides with his wife and children in North Attleboro, Massachusetts.

Supportive Buddies

This year I will commit to the mentorship action of knowing what I know and being open to what I don't know. It is important to be open to learning from others. I am volunteering as a TA for the BAC NOMAS and Sasaki Foundation and will use this ideas to create a better environment for students to learn.
