mini Sparkle Motion prototype - a tiny, fully-featured WLED board ✨🔌📏💡🌈

We're doing a lot of serious testing with our WLED mega-board, code-name Sparkle Motion .

While doing some holiday lighting projects, we also wanted something slim enough to slip into any design. It still uses an ESP32 for the best support, with USB-serial programming, 5A fuse, 5V level shifting + 100 ohm series resistors for pixel drivers, user/reset buttons, a user LED and onboard neopixel, JST SH analog/digital connector, QT I2C connector, 4 GPIO plus power/ground breakouts, and USB type C power/data input.

However, this version is made simpler and less expensive by dropping the DC jack and USB PD support: it's only for 5V strips if you want to power them directly (you could still drive 12V or 24V pixels, but you'll need separate power for them). Instead of a full set of terminal blocks for 3 signals, we only have two outputs, and they have to share the power and ground pins. It could also be used for a single two-pin dotstar LED setup. We kept the built-in I2S mic but dropped the on-board IR sensor - if you want an IR sensor, you'll be able to plug it into the JST SH port with a simple cable or solder it into the breakout pads.

The trade-off is that it's much smaller and slimmer, especially when no terminal blocks are soldered in by default: only 1.2" long x 0.785" wide (~1 sq in) x 0.3" thick vs. the original's 2" x 1.3" (2.6 sq in) x 0.55". To get it that small, we went 4-layer to give us a nice big ground and 5V plane in the middle and double-sided assembly. Coming soon.

As a former contractor, I can confidently say this fixture exudes quality and a modern aesthetic even without installing it yet. Its high-end nature is immediately apparent in the sleek matte black aluminum finish and the well-defined cylindrical shape. The design is undeniably stylish and versatile, fitting seamlessly into various spaces, as the description suggests – from kitchens to hallways and even commercial settings. The 120° adjustability of the downlight is a thoughtful feature, allowing for focused illumination where needed. While I didn't get hands-on with the wiring, the smart capabilities mentioned are intriguing. The fact that it's designed to work with a dimmer switch (which needs to be purchased separately) speaks to its potential for creating the perfect ambiance. The ability to preset the color temperature (3000K, 4000K, or 6000K) via a toggle switch before installation is also a clever touch, offering flexibility in tailoring the light to different preferences. The integrated LED is presented almost like a replaceable bulb in its appearance, which is interesting. While it's stated as integrated, the promise of a long lifespan (presumably around 50,000 hours) suggests it's built to last. The focus on eye-caring design with anti-glare and flicker-free illumination, along with a high CRI of 90+, is a significant plus, indicating a comfortable and visually accurate light source. The premium materials, specifically the matte black aluminum shell, give the fixture a robust and durable feel. Even in handling it for the video, the quality of construction was evident. While my role was limited to a visual inspection and not installation, the "Easy to Install" claim in the product description, coupled with its lightweight and compact design, suggests a straightforward setup process for the end user. Value for the money: I haven't comparison-shopped, but this light is feature-rich, and I feel that quality is always at the top of my list; otherwise, there is no value, and this light is quality. My guess is these are competitively priced. Overall, the OKELI ceiling spotlight appears to be a fantastic lighting solution. If I had more areas in my home that required this type of modern, adjustable lighting, this would certainly be a top contender. My only (slightly tongue-in-cheek) wish would be for a nuclear-powered version to truly eliminate wiring altogether, but the smart dimmer compatibility is a welcome modern feature! This is a well-designed and seemingly high-performing light fixture that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend based on my observations. ...these are easy to use: simply power with 3V like any LED and they glow with a tungsten-eque warmth (but without the 120VAC or burning heat). This week we got some samples of the same COB 'chip on board' filaments but in letters and numbers! Sure we'll have to stock 36 SKUs, but how fun would it be to display custom words? You can drive these in series - 3V total with about 30mA per filament - or parallel - 30mA and 3V * n where n is the number of letters in a row.

How To Change or Install A Light Bulb in Minutes

Changing a light bulb may seem simple, but with the growing diversity in the market, it's become more complex. From traditional incandescent bulbs to LED and smart bulbs, there's a variety of fittings and types to consider.

1. Turn Off the Power and Let the Bulb Cool

Before handling any electrical components, always ensure the power is switched off. Allow the bulb to cool down before attempting to touch it. Test the temperature by bringing the back of your hand close to the bulb.

2. Use a Ladder or Stool To Reach the Bulb

Utilise a ladder or step stool to access the bulb safely. Avoid makeshift solutions like chairs and opt for stable equipment like an A-frame ladder or sturdy step stool. Alternatively, consider using a light bulb changer kit with an extended pole for high ceilings.

3. Remove the bulb

Unscrew the bulb according to its fitting type. For screw fittings, twist the bulb counterclockwise until it loosens. Fluorescent tubes require a gentle twist while supporting both hands. GU fittings in halogen or LED lamps need careful pressure and rotation counterclockwise. Complex fluorescent bulbs can be removed by grasping the base and gently pulling until it releases.

4. Install the new bulb

By aligning it correctly with the socket and twisting clockwise for screw fittings. Fluorescent tubes should be aligned with the ballast pins and pressed in until they click into place. GU fittings require fitting the prongs into the socket openings and twisting clockwise. CFL bulbs need their pins aligned with the fixture openings and gently pushed in until they lock.

5. Confirm the bulb works

After replacing the bulb, switch the fuse back on and test the bulb to confirm it's functioning correctly before completing the cleanup process.
